Round 2 match 7A
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Black-bellied Whistling Duck, as its name suggests, has a high-pitched, whistling call. They have a bright red or pink bill, but this only develops in adulthood. Juveniles have a grey bill. Like the Fulvous Whistling Duck, they have some gooselike qualities, including long legs and neck, and slower wingbeats than most ducks.
The Northern Pintail is named for the characteristic long, pointed tail feathers of the male. Along with the tail, the glossy brown head and white chest and neck give the male a distinctive appearance. The female is mottled brown like many other female dabbling ducks, but has a long, slender neck, making the silhouette unique. This duck is globally widespread and its breeding range encompasses much of the northern hemisphere.

Round 1 match 6A
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Black-bellied Whistling Duck is not sexually dimorphic, which means females and males look the same. They have reddish brown backs and black bellies, greyish brown heads, and a bright red or pink bill. Like the Fulvous Whistling Duck, they have some gooselike qualities, including long legs and neck, and slower wingbeats than most ducks.
The Surf Scoter is sexually dimorphic, meaning the females look different from the males. Females are dark brown all over with two white patches on the face, making them look very similar to the White-Winged Scoter. One way to tell them apart is that the white patch in front of the eye is more vertically oriented on the Surf Scoter.

BOTD: Black-bellied Whistling Duck
Tumblr media
Photo: Mick Thompson
"A spectacularly marked, sociable, noisy waterfowl. Often rests on low snags above water, and may perch high in dead trees. In North America found mostly near Mexican border, but has increased in numbers recently, partly because it will use nest boxes put out for it. In some areas (such as coastal Texas), feeding of this species has become popular, with landowners tossing out corn near ponds to attract hundreds of whistling-ducks."
