I was told she’d already turned down the opportunity to pose for one of the most prestigious ad campaigns then in progress: the fur industry’s Peter Rogers’ “What Becomes A Legend Most?” series, for which Richard Avedon photographed top stars, past and present, wearing designer mink coats. Their payment for posing: the costly coat (each worth well over $20,000). Lauren Bacall, Bette Davis, Joan Crawford, Marlene Dietrich, Judy Garland — and contemporary legends including Diana Ross and Barbra Streisand — along with Ava’s close pal, Lena Horne, were among those who had participated thus far.
Ava Gardner’s reason for turning down the opportunity: “I no longer wear dead animals on my back, honey.” And this was years before the founding of PETA! (x)
Many thanks @graciemonaco

Many legendary stars, men and women alike, posed for Blackglama Mink Furs under the ‘What Becomes A Legend Most?’ ad campaign from 1968 to 1994. The name Blackglama is an ad agency’s amalgam of the words ‘Black’ for the color of the minks used and the 'Great Lakes Minks Association' (GLAMA) of Kenosha, WI. Lucille’s 1984 photo session as spokesperson did not go well and she was very uncomfortable about the whole process. Initially, she was to appear in a less sophisticated pose with blacked out teeth and messy tousled hair reminiscent of her look as 'The Queen of the Gypsies' from her 'I Love Lucy' days. At the last minute she agreed to change her look, at husband Gary's request, and take a more glamourous approach. A decision she would later regret. "I heard the shoot was a disaster. Lucy was a nervous wreck and drove everybody crazy. Gary held Lucy's hand and reassured her. She blamed him for getting her involved in the first place. Way's (Bandy) was much too heavy and in the end Lucy looked mummified. The coat never fit right on her body no matter how they draped or pinned it. In fact it wasn’t even a coat at all—just some skins loosely sewn together.”—Lee Tannen, I Loved Lucy, My Friendship With Lucille Ball. #lucilleball #blackglama #fur #mink #adcampaigns #ad #advertising #glamour #legends #photosession #amalgam #minkcoat #minkfarms #minkranch #waynelvslcy #mummified #heavymakeup #ilovelucy https://www.instagram.com/p/CnPuucHPmcy/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
