We Need More Black Dermatologists, ASAP
the historical context behind black skin has been very controversial for many years, yet somehow our melanin will ALWAYS remain poppin. I can recall one instance during my pre-teen years where my acne was really bad and I had to be prescribed some medicated acne product in order to get rid of it. one of the primary cautions on the product stated that it  “may cause bleaching” to the skin and I was utterly confused because why on Earth would my doctor decide to prescribe me something that had the possibility of altering my skin complexion? thinking about it now I realize how much the field of dermatology lacks diversity, especially when it comes to dealing with Black people.
as Black people we know how beautiful our melanin glows in the sunshine and how our shades will gradually change depending on the season, but with that being said we still have to take extremely good care of our skin regardless of how strong it  may appear to be. did you know that Black people diagnosed with melanoma have a 65% fiver year survival rate compared to their White counterparts who have about 90%? I know I made a whole post about the lack of sufficient care towards Black patients in some of my previous posts, but specifically in terms of skin care, there is the false common belief that Black people aren’t able to develop skin cancer. yes our melanin has protective measures to decrease our likelihood of getting melanoma, but that does not mean that we’re in the clear.
there is a great need for Black dermatologists and sadly there is a huge gap due to the financial strains and the competitiveness of the field. a friend of mine shared an article with me titled “Why Aren’t There More Black Dermatologists?”, and throughout the article they discuss the difficulties of getting into Dermatology programs along with how expensive it can become overtime. there definitely needs to be ways to make these programs more accessible to Black medical students who are interested in the field, along with making it  more affordable. having more people who look like us, providing us with valuable information would not only improve our health, but also give us a sense of comfort when going to the doctor.

Did You Take Your Vitamins This Morning?
Coming from an inconsistent individual, I must have some nerve asking you guys this question, right? But hey, I care about you guys a lot so I have the right to ask! Do you guys take any form of dietary supplements on a daily??
Personally, I can vaguely remember my Pediatrician prescribing me or suggesting to my parents that I should start taking those Flinstone vitamins (y’all know which one I’m talking about right?). I hated them so much because they reminded me of chalk and I was just like why the hell am I taking this everyday? I lowkey still have that same mindset when it comes to taking vitamins on a daily basis because I feel as though I am still able to obtain those nutrients based on the foods that I consume. Here I am being such a great role model right guys LOL!
Anyways, lets get into the important part of this post. It has been scientifically proven that numerous chronic diseases have been caused due to vitamin deficiencies that have built up over time, which is pretty strange because why aren’t the use of vitamins more widely promoted? Below this paragraph, I will be listing some of the few essential ingredients that you guys should look out for when deciding to take multivitamins:
1. Vitamin D: aids the body to absorb calcium along with improving bone health. Lacking vitamin d can make you prone to getting sick and even hair loss! Depending on where we are located will also have an effect on the amount of vitamin d that we are exposed to from the sun, so we can come to a consensus that during the winter our body is scrambling all over to find a source of vitamin d to help us thrive. Alongside taking vitamin d supplements, if you would rather rely on your food as a natural source, consider consuming egg yolks, fatty fish, and fortified foods.
2. Zinc: if you tend to be under a lot of stress almost ALL of the time (*slowly raises my hand*), then you would be the perfect candidate for increasing your intake of Zinc. General foods that are found with zinc in it are brown rice, sardines, spinach and organ meats.
3. Vitamin B-12: this vitamin specifically helps in the break down process of fats, carbs, and proteins. It can also help create nerve cells, body cells and help make DNA. The main food source to obtain this supplement from is mostly meats, which is why most Vegans or Vegetarians tend to become vitamin b-12 deficient.
4. Magnesium: vital for bone health and body production, calms our nerves and reduces stress over the span of 90 days, it also can help balance blood sugar levels. Not eating the right foods can cause you to become magnesium deficient, so make sure to add some soybeans, nuts, or spinach to your diet!
I also found some other forms of dietary supplements that you guys may or may not have heard of, so I’ll list them down below as well incase you decide that you wanted to check it out!
- Fish Oil Tablets: supports heart health, may help treat certain mental disorders, may reduced Inflammation within the body, and may also help support with healthy skin!
- Cod Liver Oil Tablets: may reduce pain due to arthritis, lower blood pressure, prevent upper respiratory illnesses, and support the development of a health immune system!
Although these were simply just suggestions for you all if you do consider taking multivitamins, please be sure to consult with your primary care physician beforehand!! The specific vitamins that I just listed are usually found in most of the foods that we consume so don’t feel pressured to go out and purchase additional vitamins.

Food Deserts, We Have Seen Them
The areas where you live tend to have the biggest impact on you, whether it be your health, your personality, or your life in general. We all know the common trend between low income neighborhoods compared to those of middle-class/ upper-class income individuals (unless theres ya know.... gentrification). From first hand experience I can admit to you guys that I do live in a food desert and it’s honestly depressing because the only quality food supermarkets are at a long distance and the prices are outstanding. This has not only been happening in my neighborhood but it is currently happening all over the country. In areas of lower income, there are rarely any supermarkets nearby while there are tons of liquor stores and corner stores down every street. Do you guys know how much of an effect this can have over the population’s health?!
With the lack of quality food sources in these neighborhoods, how are we expected to maintain a healthy well balanced diet? This not only shows the overlap between individuals who live in low-income neighborhoods having higher chances of developing heart disease, diabetes, and even cancer, but this also reminds us of the blatant systemic racism that is still alive today!
One primary example is of a city in Birmingham, Alabama who has had a long history of racism embedded within their system. Neighborhoods would be redlined in order to create a division between Black and White people. This would cause the closing of many businesses, more specifically quality grocery stores. Aside from the limited resources, community groups in Birmingham have been trying to create a better source of access for their citizens to get the healthy foods that they need. Farmer’s markets and a 24-hour mobile grocery store have been created in order to improve access within these neighborhoods.
So i’m saying all of this to let you guys know that it is impossible to expect individuals who are classified as low-socioeconomic status to have a well balanced healthy diet because there are so many systemic measures that put them at a huge disadvantage. Our health as Black people is extremely valuable and we have to be able to take care of our bodies because we only have this one body! Gentrification must come to an end and we must figure out alternative solutions that will allow our people to develop better eating habits and maintain amazing health!
