Communion is the sharing or exchanging of intimate thoughts and feelings, especially when this exchange is on a mental and spiritual level. Umoja— the Swahili word for Unity— is the act of building a community that holds together. It is through music that the Black diaspora partakes in communion to cultivate Umoja. This playlist is a collection of different degrees of communion in the Black community. Black love, Black family and the Black communities are the foundation of the Black experience.
I thought a lot about Miami, my family and friends while making this playlist. It reminded me of the streets I grew up on, the apartment complex playground I played with all my friends in and how that experience is so common and staple to communion. Hoping this playlist takes people back home like it did for me.

Nina Simone (/ˈniːnə sɪˈmoʊn/; born Eunice Kathleen Waymon; February 21, 1933 – April 21, 2003) was an American singer, songwriter, pianist, arranger, and activist in the Civil Rights Movement. Simone employed a broad range of musical styles including classical, jazz, blues, folk, R&B, gospel, and pop. Born in North Carolina, the sixth child of a preacher, Waymon aspired to be a concert pianist. With the help of a few supporters in her hometown of Tryon, North Carolina, she enrolled in the Juilliard School of Music in New York. Waymon then applied for a scholarship to study at the prestigious Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where she was denied admission despite a well-received audition. Waymon became fully convinced this rejection had been entirely due to racial discrimination. Years later, two days before her death, the Curtis Institute of Music bestowed on her an honorary degree. To make a living, Eunice Waymon changed her name to "Nina Simone". The change related to her need to disguise herself from family members, having chosen to play "the devil's music"or "cocktail piano" at a nightclub in Atlantic City. She was told in the nightclub that she would have to sing to her own accompaniment, and this effectively launched her career as a jazz vocalist. Simone recorded more than 40 albums, mostly between 1958, when she made her debut with Little Girl Blue, and 1974. She had a hit in the United States in 1958 with "I Loves You, Porgy". Simone's musical style fused gospel and pop with classical music, in particular Johann Sebastian Bach, and accompanied expressive, jazz-like singing in her contraltovoice. In 2018, Simone will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. #herlife #herstory #blackgirlmagic #anoriginal #ninasimone #legendary #blackheritagemonth #blackhistorymonth

Black History Month: Onata Acknowledges the Contributions of the African American Community to the Society
Tumblr media
As we draw closer to the far end of celebrating the Black History Month, it’s a great time to reflect upon the relevance, contributions, and aspirations of the black community in America.
The release of Black Panther was perhaps the most fitting tribute to the Black History Month in ages. It was perhaps the tribute that came a century too late. Onata salutes the efforts and contributions of black community leaders like Martin Luther King Jr., Phillis Wheatley (18th-century poet),  Norbert Rilleaux (inventor of the multiple-effect evaporator), Frances Harper (social activist), Bessie Coleman (first licensed black engineer of the world), and Thurgood Marshall (first black Supreme Court Jurist).
As an ecosystem for the Universe of Services, Onata recognizes the contribution of every citizen of the community in creating, nurturing, and in many ways, reigniting the American Dream. We truly believe that social bridging between communities and people at large is possible when we become of service to one another.

“These imperfections that we have, our mistakes and follies, they are the color shades of life, they add richness and texture to our human experience. Even our physical imperfections show nature’s variety. Sometimes I like to reframe the word “Imperfect” to the phrase “I’m perfect” because I am, you are, we are perfect in our imperfections.” ~ @tarurigatere Thank you for your daily dose of wisdom and love boo!!! Thank you!!! #28DaysOfSelfLove #FebruaryBaby #blackheritagemonth

Widely considered to be the “Father of the Black Church”, Richard Allen (1760-1831) founded the African Methodist Episcopal Church (AME). Born into slavery in Philadelphia, Allen was allowed to buy his freedom at the age of 20. Ordained a Methodist minister in 1784, he became increasingly put off by the racist segregation of the white Methodist community. He responded by founding the AME, first as a local congregation and then uniting with a group of churches from surrounding cities to form the first black denomination in the United States. Elected as the institution’s first Bishop, Allen was a major influence in the development of black cultural identity and an inspiration for future generations of leaders who would use the church as major force for organization and unification in the black community. - Huffington Post #blackheritagemonth #blackhistorymonth #blackhistory #gamechanger #history #churchhistory #blackchurch #ame #founder #faith #jesus #americanhistory #influencer #ourstory #hechangedtheworld #hechangedthechurch
