"ATTEMPTED ESCAPE BY 2 YOUNG LIFERS IS NIPPED IN BUD," Montreal Gazette. July 21, 1933. Page 7. ---- Couture and L'Heureux Found to Have Been Armed With Blackjacks ---- COUTURE BECOMES ILL ---- Plot Revealed by Prisoner in St. Hyacinthe Jail-L'Heureux Confesses to Plan --- (Special to The Gazette.) St. Hyacinthe, Que. July 20. - An attempt to make an escape on the part of two young men who had been sentenced to life imprisonment yesterday by Mr Justice Loranger in the Court of King's Bench on a charge of rape was nipped in the bud this afternoon by another prisoner confined in the local jail who had overheard the plans of the two men and notified guard. By this time the two prisoners were being taken to the St. Vincent de Paul Penitentiary and were nine miles from here when the sheriff who accompanied them was warned of the attempt. They were taken back to the local jail where, following a search, two heavy blackjacks were found hidden under some loose boards in one of the bathrooms.
The two men who were being taken to the penitentiary this afternoon by Sheriff J. L. Cormier. Captain Adrien Malo and Georges Tetrault, who war driving the automobile, Edouard L'Heureux, 20 years of age, and Lionel Couture, 18 years of age, both of St. Guilliaume d'Upton. Both were found guilty yesterday in the Court of King's Bench on a charge of rape on the person of a young schoolteacher, committed on October 20, 1931. In addition they were known to the police, having been arrested two years ago on charges of hold-ups on parish presbyteries in parishes of St. Damase, Beloeil, St. Pie de Baget and St. Liboire. Imposing sentence yesterday Mr. Justice Loranger pointed out that he could sentence them to be hanged.
Following their sentence the convicts were brought to the local jail where they remained until shortly after noon today when they were being taken to the St. Vincent de Paul Penitentiary. The two young men were escorted to the waiting automobile and, accompanied by Sheriff Cormier and Captain Malo, were on their way to the penitentiary.
Shortly after the automobile with the two prisoners left here, a prisoner by the name of Riendeau shouted to his guard and said that he had something important to tell him. Guard Raoul Piche ran to the cell and was surprised to hear that Couture and L'Heureux had planned to make an escape. Rlendeau told the guard that he knew that Couture had two blackjacks hidden in the legs of his trousers.
Guard Piche at once made every effort to communicate with Sheriff Cormier before any harm would come to him. Before he was able to reach the sheriff, however, the automobile with the two prisoners returned to the jail. The sheriff was then told of the information Riendeau had given the guard.
When asked why they had returned so soon. Sheriff Cormier explained that they had reached St. Damaske, nine miles from here, when Couture became ill. He had not eaten breakfast or dinner and became very sick and started spitting blood. Upon arrival at the local jall and before anyone was able to search him, Couture rushed for the bath-room and remained there a few moments. As soon as he emerged from the bathroom he was thoroughly searched but no black-jacks or other weapons were found on his person. L'Heureux was also searched, but nothing was found.
FELT SOMETHING WRONG. Guard Plche, however, stated that he was convinced that there was something in the air and that Riendeau would not have made such statements without reason. He then started a search of the cell where Couture and L'Heureux had been kept overnight, but was again disappointed. Coming to the conclusion that Couture, had remained over-long in the bathroom the guard directed his search there. Much to his surprise he found two blackjacks hidden under some loose boards on the floor of the bathroom. He came to the conclusion that Couture had hidden them there when he was driven back to the jail.
L'Heureux, the older of the two, was then questioned and, officials stated, made a complete confession of what was to have happened when he and Couture were being driven to the penitentiary. He said that on Monday when he and Couture left the penitentiary where they had spent a whole year, to be taken to St. Hyacinthe for trial, Couture had taken two blackjacks with him. It was decided that en route for St. Hyacinthe Couture would give a signal and they would blackjack their guards who, in that case also happened to be Sheriff Cormier, Captain Malo, and Chauffeur Teirault. L'Heureux was to strike the sheriff, while Couture would take care of the captain and the driver of the car. They would then be able to make an escape with Tetrault's automobile.
At this point of the confession, L'Heureux started to weep and said that on three occasions Couture had given the sign, but that he would not act. When asked why he would not do so, L'Heureux declared that he thought of his mother and it was for her sake that he would not heed Couture's signals. He further stated that he was afrald to either kill or badly wound the three men who acted as their guards. L'Heureux then explained that the same process was in he worked on the return trip to St. Vincent de Paul. Examination of the two blackjacks revealed that they were lead tubes covered over with heavy canvas and each, weighing about one and three-quarters pounds. During his year stay at the penitentiary while awaiting trial in St. Hyacinthe, Couture was employed in the photography department and the officials say they are of the opinion that the two lead bars had been procured there. They were unable to explain, however, how the two prisoners succeeded in leaving the penitentiary with the two heavy pieces of lead.
Couture who is still very ill at the local jail and is under the care of Dr.J. A. Viger, while awaiting to be again taken to the St. Vincent de Paul penitentiary to commence serving his life sentence. It was not stated last night whether the two prisoners will be taken together, or whether they will be driven to the penitentiary one by one.
It was stated here today that an investigation will be started in order to find out how the two men were able to leave the penitentiary taking with them the two weapons which might have cost the lives of at least one of the three men acting as guards, and aided them in making an escape.
