A reflection on Social Media

It was really eye-opening reading this week about the different articles on how ethnicities in our world use social media differently than others. How minority ethnicities use social media as a form of communication to connect with their family members and friends online. They share pictures and share their videos of trips, or photos of food with their loved ones in order to feel connected to them. It was interesting reading the thoughts of how people got into the trend of #BlackLifeMatter without knowing the history behind it. How people use black screen pictures in their Instagram and social accounts without knowing why, it’s interesting how people get into trends, and they don’t know the meaning behind them, or if it’s appropriate to use them for them. LatinX was an interesting topic to know and read why people don’t agree with the term “LatinX”. The feeling behind some people feel disrespected knowing that this term is used to represent everyone into a category.

HOW WE PROGRESS IS KEY!

The key isn’t in trying to perpetuate, adapt and fit-in into the constructs that they’ve put together. The key isn’t in trying to live up to standards that completely warp our collective and individual senses of “self” and “self worth”. It’s about taking a hold of what we have and pushing forward to becoming things that they cannot and would not want us to be or be defined as. After deaths upon deaths—lives lost to little worth in their moment, broken and fractured for a machine that would serve to elevate others—we must rebuke and refuse to conform. It’s our responsibility and RIGHT to become more than they would ever think they could allow.
