do you think Hobie would like black metal?

I love that you’ve come to me with this question. But no, I firmly believe that Hobie would not like black metal. For one, metal and punk are extremely different genres, although people tend to think they’re the same and use them interchangeably. The amount of people I’ve seen call Eddie Munson punk is proof enough of this. Hobie Brown is a punk, not a metalhead. And while punks can of course listen to metal and metalheads can of course listen to punk (exhibit A: me), Hobie doesn’t strike me as the type who’d enjoy much metal. Although I will say I could easily picture him listening to Rage Against the Machine, which combines metal with punk and rap music.

Incoherent side note: one of the first black metal bands, Hellhammer, was heavily influenced by hardcore punk. (The front man, Tom Warrior has even expressed being uncomfortable with being one of the pioneers of black metal, because of some of the shit the kids he inspired have done.) Regardless, not only are metal and punk very different genres (despite overlaps), black metal is a very extreme subgenre of metal and as it developed, it strayed very far from its punk influences.

Also, it’s worth noting a lot of earlier black metal (that “True Norwegian Black Metal” stuff) had a lot of neo-nazis/nazi sympathizers in the mix. It’s left quite the stain on black metal although I do feel like the black metal scene, with the rise of newer and more diverse artists, is working on moving away and separating themselves from the bigotry of the OG’s. Regardless, Hobie would probably have no problem absolutely demolishing a lot of those OG blackmetallers.

So long story short, Hobie is so highly unlikely to enjoy black metal.

A bible left in my mailbox

This is what I did to it

Out of the hundred or so other mailboxes in my apartment complex mine was the only one with this trash stuffed in it. It was too big for the mailbox and stuck out like a sore thumb. I check my mail every day so this was obviously done today, and only for me.

This might have something to do with me wearing a Mayhem shirt yesterday? Mayhem is a black metal band from Norway, responsible for a number of great achievements (some of them even musical).

I did clean most of this up after taking the pic, putting it in the junk mail disposal box where this garbage belongs, though I did leave the ripped up cover laying there on the ground as a not so subtle hint to whoever left it for me that their efforts are futile. I made sure to sanitize my hands afterwards due to the high possibility this was left by one of those "the blood of christ is my vaccine" types.

Perhaps I should now spend the rest of the month cycling through my most blasphemous clothing that xtians seem to be deeply offended by. Deicide's "to kill god and all that is holy" shirt, or the Marduk shirt with a woman using a crucifix as a sex toy? I have plenty more shirts and messages to send. Why shouldn't I? After all, if these people like spreading their unwanted message the least I can do is return the favor.
