It's so funny to me when people ask me what Black Sails is about. What am i supposed to say? It's a pirate show, it's the prequel to Treasure Island but how far can I go without spoiling things?
I cannot say that it's the story of a man so angry with the world (and especially the british empire, but really with everyone) that starts a war. I cannot say that everything Flint does he does it for the memory (or the pain for the loss) of Thomas, his truest love.
I cannot say that this show talks about truth, and stories, and legacies, and the tales we tell ourselves to be able to get by.
I cannot say that the characters's motivations are always so alligned with their personality that it almost feel like i know them personally, and i know why they do the things that they do and that i cannot hate any of them because of it.
I cannot talk about the ambiguous and beautiful relationship between Silver and Flint.
I cannot talk about the parallels and recurring things throughout the show (Silver telling Flint ''i've put good men in the ground for you, friends, i ask you to do this for me'' and Anne telling Jack '' we've always been together you and I. I've always done what you asked me, put men in the ground for you, done some fucked up awful shit because i knew you needed it done, and you can't do this for me?". Silver telling both Flint and Madi ''i'll stay here a day, a month, a year''. Mcgrow telling Thomas that he believes that his father will tell him that to pardon something ones fear is the act of a coward, Alfred Hamilton saying that and then Flint saying it to his men when they're hunted down by Hornigold in season 3. I could go on for hours).
I cannot talk about the fact that it's a show about deconstructing villains and that ''giving a man power on other men and put it on an island with no control and he'll realise soon enough that there's not limit to his power'' and how this applies to almost everybody: Flint ''I am your king" and how he kills the two men that ate when they were rationalizing food at the beginning of season 3; Eleanor ''the pirate queen'' deciding almost everything on her island, taking away Vane's ship and sending away Teach; The Maroon queen, doing what she wants.
I love this show so much, if i think about it too much it overwhelms me.
