A Complete List of the Posts in the Chanoyu-to-wa Translation of the Nampō Roku, Part 2: Books Six and Seven.
◎ Sixth Book of the Nampō Roku [六・南方錄].
Book Six contains a series of essays that explain secret details of things originally mentioned in the first five books. According to a comment attributed to Rikyū, after he read the contents of this book, he ordered Nambō Sōkei to destroy it -- because such teachings should not be preserved in writing (where they could all too easily fall into the wrong hands), but only transmitted orally (when the teacher decides that the disciple is ready to receive those teachings). The protection of these teachings is said to have been the idea that inspired Sōkei to acquire the secure wooden chest in which he kept his papers
Spurious additions are primarily limited to some of the kaki-ire [書入], and, apparently, to occasional insertions insinuated into blank spaces in the original text.
Once again, many of the details discussed in the commentaries have never been published before, in any language.

◎ Seventh Book of the Nampō Roku [七・南方錄].
Tachibana Jitsuzan originally intended to follow the precedent of the Rikyū chanoyu sho [利休茶湯書] (published in 1580, and based on an earlier selection of Shū-un-an documents), and arrange the teachings in a series of six books. However, after doing so with the documents that were indispuitably authentic, Jitsuzan decided to gather everything else that remained into a seventh book, while attempting to arranging the contents in a certain order -- from those that were most likely written or collected by Nambō Sōkei, and those that had somehow managed to find their way into the wooden chest in the decades between Sōkei’s death and Jitsuzan’s gaining access to the collection circa 1586 (many of which were clearly written by people who had no connection with either Sōkei or Rikyū).
Book Seven, then, consists of a collection of essays on a wide range of topics, at least theoretically related to the chanoyu of Rikyū’s period (though sometimes representing deliberate attempts to insert Edo period ideas into this earlier collection, in an attempt to give them historical validity). While it was claimed that everything in the book was written by Nambō Sōkei in the several hours between the end of the dawn service on the third anniversary of Rikyū’s seppuku and the time when he would have had to leave the Shū-un-an [集雲庵] so as to walk into the mountains and so join Rikyū’s spirit in death, the length of the book (as well as the dramatic variability in the language) makes it obvious that Tachibana Jitsuzan indiscriminately included everything that remained in Sōkei’s wooden chest that could not be worked into one of the earlier six books. This book is, by far, the longest in the Nampō Roku -- and contains the largest dose of spurious material as well. Indeed, it is the conflict of these spurious teachings with what is explained in earlier entries in the first six books that has lead subsequent generations of scholars to cast doubt (as well as aspersions) on the authenticity of the whole Nampō Roku. Only by taking a careful look at the language of each individual entry will help to determine when each was added to the collection, and by whom.
