I wanna keep talking about Kiki Layne's Met Gala look & *why* it's so brilliant....

*sigh*

This silhouette is not only a bunch of checkmarks for all the gilded age girl fashion staples: the color pink, the corset buttons, the opera gloves, the close to the neck -necklace, the heavy halo of hair framing her face... But what it subverts given Kiki's immaculate face card (honestly the best face there, argue with your momma) and her being emphatically black, not just by being a black woman, by how she is styled especially the fro!!!... See, there was this "feminine ideal" in the gilded age called The Gibson Girl:

As drawn by Charles Gibson in the 1890's which lasted up until WWI, this was the feminine ideal of the era... Pure, beautiful, etheral, the right class, perfect. ...and WHITE. One big signature is the huge pile of hair that formed a heavy halo on the head. Anne, in the 1985 Anne of Green Gables, reached for this look in the concert scene here (note the pink sash, flower in her big red hair, neck hugging pearls, frilly detailing empasizing the clavicle and shoulders, and opera gloves):

I mentioned the fros were *also* of the era... the exoticifed ideal of the Circassian woman:

These women were exhibited in traveling shows and given exotified backstories of having been kidnapped and sold into white slavery... from the Caucasus Mountians region, in the country of Georgia and regions south of Russia in Europe. They were exotified as "perfection" in beauty and known for their afro-textured hair.... but again WHITE. Now, the stylist for Miss Layne said she specifically chose the Afro as a purposeful nod to blackness within the opulence of the gilded styling... but KNOWING ALL OF THE ABOVE, her look goes well beyond just that into the startlingly subversive. Again... Kiki is soft, she's princess pretty, she's pure, ethereal, she's feminine, delicate, all of those things usually ascribed to whiteness.... while checking off the gilded style reference points AND being a black woman. And as we know, when it comes to the rareity of black women being seen as soft...

* thing.* from the delicate way she is holding herself in this style, -she's wearing it, it's *not* wearing her (posture immaculate, hands delicately crossed) to again... Just her BEAUTY and her BLACK beauty in that Halo of Afro hair... She just stomped all over that Gibson aesthetic and proved she can best that ideal with emphatic blackness....soft fro, perfect face card, and all... all while hitting the assignment pitch perfect. And that, my friends, is why I LOVE THIS LOOK.

I don’t play custodes on tabletop but i do love the faction, and i think it’s an interesting and harmless little addition to the setting. Somewhere in the mists of time some custodes put his genhanced transhuman mind to work and asked himself “What if instead of just taking boy babies for the Full Genome Restructuring Into An Exalted Demigod…what if we took all the babies.” Now we have the Golden Roughly Twenty Thousand, double the protection for the Emperor😌

it's been pointed out on here before that a lot of terf arguments are actually rooted in sexist idealology that feminists fought and died to unnormalise decades ago and that's its own kettle of fish but one thing i also find very frustrating about this so called 'radical' feminism is that it's so... defeatist? like the moment you categorically label an entire section of society as Bad and Inherently Evil then there's also the implication that nothing can be done about it, and it completely takes all accountability away. saying all men are evil is just another way of saying boys will be boys. he raped her because he's a man. he hit her because he's a man. he didn't listen because he's a man - it's almost offensively oversimplified. there's no point trying to fix this issue in society because men are just Like That, okay! so now what? it's not like they're going anywhere, so you just accept that 50% of the population are evil and will forever treat you terribly and there's nothing to be done about it bc they're biologically predisposed to it? like is that fr the argument here? you're soooo radical for that

craving wlw fiction and media. like a really good tv series or a film. one that gets really popular. with some fun setting and premise. nothing too dramatic, no violence against women or homophobia. nothing too real, just an interesting story. it's understandable mlm ships and couples are more popular if you think of history (gay men have been more visible) and also when you consider that mlm romance can be comforting to women since it doesn't include the aspect of womanhood and what often comes with it (the violence, the imbalance in power and dynamic, worrying that the guy will develop feelings for you ugghhh) but I wish there was more sapphic stuff. more wlw fiction that gets the same kind of love that mlm fiction does

#especially more mainstream media and television/film. like ofmd or good omens or something like that #''good omens isn't mlm'' yeah but i'm willing to put my head on the line that if it had women in the main roles it wouldn't be as popular #OR WELL. really depends on who they'd have casted i guess #i was thinking of this bc i've been trying to think of lesbians to draw and I'M OFTEN BLANKING #nor's rambles #i know there's lots of cartoons with wlw but i'm a fully grown adult i struggle to sit through a show whose primary audience is kids

we need to rush bans on surrogacy or at least way stricter laws ensuring the rights of the mothers, too many people who buy surrogates are fucking insane and create such stressful situations for these women that to any logical person would be insanely unethical but apparently a singular contract means these women aren't people anymore and have no rights whatsoever about their bodies and the fetuses they are literally growing. or when the people paying these women to have their child don't uphold the contracts in ways that reaffirm they think these women are just mindless incubators makes my head explode. like how is there not more safeguards in place at the very least for these women.

Trying to write fiction about women who are detached intellectuals is challenging because

a. This is already a relatively rare trope for men

b. When men are portrayed this way they’re often a side character not the main

c. There are very few portrayals of women with this personality at all and almost none with a main character

d. Women with this personality fail so many standards of femininity that there aren’t even old archetypes or stories about them you can rely on

So far I’ve been practicing by writing male characters like this then gender swapping the words to refer to them, but this fails to touch on what it’s like to be a woman with these characteristics. Such a woman cannot help but notice how her gender holds her back, the prevalence of ancient misogyny, etc. As much as she may want to essentially be a gender swapped male, she isn’t. Writing that honestly requires imagination because existing media sure isn’t gonna help you.

If she’s gnc, forget it, you’re basically inventing it from scratch at that point. You never realize how much you rely on existing tropes as a writer until you come to a place where there are no older tropes to rely on!
