obviously props to anyone who like still feels the spirit when it comes to blb but it’s kind of wild to me how my interest in making any sort of blaseball fanwork almost completely evaporated after the game ended. like. idk. it just Left. I don’t have any ideas in me anymore. it’s not even that I think I’m too good for it or that I think it’s immature, it’s more just that whatever momentum had been propelling me to want to make stuff and share it about blaseball just completely left me.

it might be the dissolution of maincord and the fanworks channel and the death of blb creative activity in what few sidecords I lived in. it might also be the fact that knowing the game is never coming back means to me that there’s little point to “loring” what’s going on with the characters, even if you subscribe to the idea that they “escaped” the game at the end being released, bc like. there isn’t really a community making creative stuff together in that same way anymore.

and even when I do see some people still making blb creative stuff and stories, I feel happy that they’re still fulfilled by it but I also just realize that that time I guess has passed for me. i am not sure I’d even want to participate if there was a super active lore community bc it’s just gone. it doesn’t even feel like a huge empty space either, it just feels like a place I moved away from. much like the senior year college dorm where I watched most of the discipline and expansion era’s actual runtime.

GAMES on nights we dream of stars - my first bitsy!! a semi-autobiographical game about the sky on the nature of ghosts - another bitsy, this one about metaphorical ghosts and the nature of being haunted the end is near - yet another bitsy!! probably my favourite one– a soliloquy at the end of the world agami village - a visual novel made with weiwei xu as part of hand eye society’s SUFest, aka the coolest thing i’ve ever done probably. if you like fish and/or time loops check this one out.

ZINES square roots - a collab zine i did with @tigerquoii as part of @blaseballzinejam!! celestial cartography - my first solo zine, also part of the zine jam. every other zine i was a part of for the blaseball zine jam lmao - what it says on the tin untitled perzine about chronic illness and turning 25 - ditto

Written after I'd been playing them on Twitter for some time, so it's a lot more consistent with a lot of things!

eight things i've written that i think rule and are underappreciated

because sometimes you go to your ao3 stats page out of curiosity and you see things at the bottom of stats and go what the fuck, that rules and deserves more attention, and honestly i like the things i write so i'm going to promote some. you know how it goes. multifandom but with a heavy blaseball focus

keep low (blaseball semicentennial) was written for the rolling remix exchange, about rat mason avoiding the vault, and i had a lot of fun trying to make it feel legitimately threatening and weird without writing A Full Horror Story

imprinting (blaseball) was written for the blaseball zine jam, specifically fusion weather, where i answer the question, "how fucked up would it be if salmon eclipses could kill people and then undo it" and i'm still really proud of the four different scenarios in the fic

building as a verb (blaseball) was written for one of those maincord flash fanwork prompts, i took two characters i'd never written before and threw them together for no real reason and injected all my thoughts about the gleek having seen so much death, and it was fun just fucking around

on currents (blaseball sc1) is a story about pirates featuring a bunch of temporary characters and so is maybe more accessible to nonfans than a lot of these blaseball fics. what if a sword that became a tree and a star that became a wrestler had to navigate a crew of pirates out of hell. what if i trusted you enough to let you hold my whole body and essence in your hands

hurricane season (blaseball, early expansion) was written for a friendly fanwork jam about elsewhere back when that was a very new concept, and i still love the idea that elsewhere players literally dissolve into immateria. like let's be honest i crushed it

sense/memory (neoscum) was written bc i had the idea very present in the back of my mind and no time to commit, so i sat down and did a messy style experiment and i really love what came out of it

a ten-year concussion (f@tt c/w, jace/addax/jamil) is a ghost au. i don't normally do ghost aus but this one still exists fully in my head. idk i just think that jamil is a fun addition to the jace/addax dynamic and this was me trying to explore that and i think i did well

window blues (campaignpod s1, tryst/aava) was my attempt at smushing together the scenes in ocean's eleven where they recruit young hotshot matt damon, their old retiree grifter, and where george clooney reunites with julia roberts. and i really love the tone that's set here

RIV Blaseball

God, I don’t even know where to start here. This game and its community have meant so much to me for so long and now it’s just. Done. It inspired me to actually get involved in a fandom and writing fanfic for the first time. It got me deeply involved in the community to the point of being a mod on one of the biggest side servers and an assistant on the official server. I loved the way the devs, fans, and the game itself were in constant conversation, building off each other and responding to one another, creating a story that belonged to everyone and no one. I love the coordination people put together to game the systems, and the way that gaming the system caused the story to evolve and progress in turn. The Grand Unslam turned a glitch into a major plot event, fans manipulated a leaderboard to perform Necromancy and inadvertendly cause several deaths, everyone got together to pilot spaceships through the end of the world and kill a god.

I loved the incredible characters and deeply weird world that came out of the fanlore. This was a world where Los Angeles splintered into infinite fractal cities, where You Are From Chicago, where Halifax is sunk beneath the waves and pays tribute to the ancient leviathan that manages the afterlife and also the snack stand. Where players can be anything from “normal” people to The Concept of Mathematics or a hole in reality in the shape of Wyatt Mason. What I loved most was taking these characters and world and seeing things *happen* to them, and what that inspired in people. Everything I wrote was in response to the game, contextualizing, dramatizing, and grounding the abstract events and developments on the site into a place with character and weight. But there’s not going to be any more developments. What is, is. Now all that’s left is memory. Blaseball isn’t like a show you can rewatch, or even experience vicariously by showing someone else. To me, what made it special we being a part of it, experiencing it as it went. We can tell the stories, we can still make fanwork, but there’s never going to be that same magic. I understand why it had to end. I know it wasn’t sustainable. But it feels like I lost a dear friend.

2022 is almost over, and I wanted to highlight the blaseball stuff I did this year!

Everyone has that one Blaseball player that's their Blorbo. Jasper Coven is mine. I set a lot of his lore, and also contributed a lot to the Talkers' short circuit 2, Valhalifax. I really miss that team, and I really love Jasper. This is how he got the Valhalifax, and how he came to get Kiki Familia as his mentor.

I had the best lucky falling in with @polkadotpatterson and @mossy-kit and getting to build an amazing world together (and tricking them into being my friends). The Salt is lost short circuit that takes place in a Halifax where all the water has disappeared, leaving a vast salt flat behind, and a coven works in secret to try to bring the water back.

I finished a book this year, and it's a book that wouldn't have happened without Blaseball. I wanted to give my Blaseball OC, Oliver Trashcat, a story of his own, and what I got out of it is basically a love letter to Blaseball. There's nods to the fan culture, entire goddamn Garages lyrics, Talker arch types, and even a couple of cameos. I'm hosting it on Itch, and also posting it here one chapter at a time. It's pay what you want on Itch, which mean if you want to just download it for free, please do! I love these people and I want to share them with you all.

Top 5 non-Talkers tends to fluctuate but off the top of my head rn it's:

Dunlap Figueroa, my first non-Talker blorbo who still lives rent free in my head

Ji-Eun Clove. players you learn about through writing them in a fanwork exchange and then love forever

PolkaDot Zavala. I may be The PolkaDot Patterson Person but that doesn't mean I don't adore the less appreciated PolkaDot too!

Nagomi Nava! I love her and her dynamic with Passenger

can't believe I almost forgot about EVE MCBLASE my favourite fun little cartoon supervillain I love her

And, top 5 things I've enjoyed lately (definitely not movies, I don't watch enough of those riv):

the locked tomb series! my favourite books I read last year, they drive me bonkers

I'm currently rereading wings of fire and honestly it holds up even better than I expected. they're genuinely very good books

stardew valley!!! I'm slowly easing back into playing video games more regularly again, and starting to get properly into this one has been a lot of fun

I'm not remotely caught up but I finally checked out d20 for neverafter and I've been enjoying it a lot! I love creative fairy tale retellings and there's sure a lot going on in this one lol

honestly I've read too many good books in the past year for it to be easy to just pick one more, but I want to give a shoutout to ducks by kate beaton. it's already a great and important book in a lot of ways but as someone with cape breton roots, that aspect of it resonated with me very deeply
