Harry Belafonte, wearing a striped shirt, in an recording studio, circa 1957.
In light of the concurrent WGA Writer’s and SAG-AFTRA actor’s strike happening in Hollywood, we felt it fitting to take a look back at a handful of celebs and influential figures who’ve never shied away of speaking up and speaking out for a cause.
It’s only right that we start with one of the giants of the past, civil rights leader and entertainer Harry Belafonte. Though he passed earlier this year, his legacy will undoubtedly live on through many generations as those with pivotal platforms decide to use for the betterment of society.
Tumblr media
Kendrick Sampson speaks during the Alight Align Arise: Advancing the Movement for Repair National Conference on June 09, 2023 in Atlanta, Georgia.
Not only does Insecure and How to Get Away With Murder star Kendrick Sampson talk the talk, he actively walks the walk with his non-profit BLD PWR. Sampson regularly champions important causes such as intersectional mental health justice, the criminal legal system, immigration, #SchoolsNotPrisons, Standing Rock, and Black Lives Matter.
Tumblr media
Sidney Poitier, looking straight ahead with his hand wrapped around his chin, circa March 1966.
There’s a reason why the late legendary actor and activist Sidney Poitier will go down in the history books. Thanks to his barrier-breaking roles in film and television, the iconic actor often used his platform to amplify messages for the civil rights movement alongside good friend Harry Belafonte.
Tumblr media
Jesse Williams attends as Anna Wintour hosts Special Screening of “Living” at Crosby Hotel on December 05, 2022 in New York City.
If you didn’t know Grey’s Anatomy star Jesse Williams was about that activism life, then his iconic speech at the 2016 BET awards while receiving its Humanitarian award definitely should have clued you in. Even before that and still after that date, he continues to highlight important issues facing Black Americans today through a myriad of ventures such as Question Bridge: Black Males and more.
Tumblr media
Taraji P. Henson attends the 2023 ESSENCE Festival Of Culture™ on June 30, 2023 in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Actress Taraji P. Henson is one of our faves for more reasons than one. Not only does she entertain the masses onscreen, but offscreen she advocates for better mental health resources for people of color through her Boris Lawrence Henson Foundation and better access to education and opportunities through her work with the White House Initiative on Advancing Educational Equity, Excellence, and Economic Opportunity through Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
Tumblr media
Muhammad Ali at a press conference on March 10, 1976, presenting his new autobiographical book ‘The Greatest: My Own Story’ held at The Savoy Hotel in London, UK.
Late legendary boxing champion Muhammad Ali may float like a butterfly and sting like a bee, but he also knocked down the evils of society as one of the most unashamed and outspoken figures in the civil rights movement. “Shoot them for what?” ring a bell. Yeah, we thought so.
Tumblr media
John Legend attends the 2023 Milken Institute Global Conference at The Beverly Hilton on May 01, 2023 in Beverly Hills, California.
Whether he’s making music to further the cause or giving of his time and resources, singer and activist John Legend continues to play his role when it comes pushing conversations around prison reform, racial inequality and the fight against injustices.
Tumblr media
Billie Holiday records her penultimate album ‘Lady in Satin’ at the Columbia Records studio in December 1957 in New York City, New York.
I only have two words for you that should assure you of legendary singer Billie Holiday’s determination for the fight for fairness and equal rights in the U.S.: “Strange Fruit.” If you don’t know the history behind that song, what all it took to record/perform it, and what happened in the aftermath because of it—might I suggest it this weekend.
Tumblr media
Gabrielle Union and Dwyane Wade attend the reopening of The Landmark at Tiffany & Co 5th Avenue on April 27, 2023 in New York City.
Not only do couple Gabrielle Union and NBA superstar Dwyane Wade constantly speak up for the rights on LGBTQIA+ folks, they also use their platforms to raise awareness for other causes such as women’s rights, violence against women and how to put an end to it, gun violence and more.
Tumblr media
Nina Simone (born Eunice Waymon) sits at a table in the Regency Hyatt Hotel, Atlanta, Georgia, August 9 through 13, 1967.
With a voice that was equal parts haunting and enthralling, late singer Nina Simone was one of the foremost entertainers in the 60s who were intentional about using their platform to highlight racial injustice, violence against Black folks and the struggle for freedom. Her songs and messages are still used as an underlying force to this day.
Tumblr media
Kerry Washington speaks onstage during Variety’s TV FYC Fest on June 07, 2023 in Los Angeles, California
I can’t think of a more visible celeb when it comes to voting and women’s rights than Scandal and Unprisoned star Kerry Washington. Whether she’s speaking at a Women’s March or making TikToks about the fight for voting rights, one thing’s for certain—Washington is and has been about that life.
Tumblr media
James Baldwin in Paris in 1975.
Whether you found yourself deeply engrossed in one of his many books examining the mistreatment of Black folks in America or doing a deep dive into some of his past interviews, late author and activist James Baldwin never minced words and was always able to eloquently express the ways in which the U.S. ought to do better by its citizens. And for that we thank him.
Tumblr media
Beyoncé performs onstage during the “RENAISSANCE WORLD TOUR” at MetLife Stadium on July 29, 2023 in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
Yes, Bey technically does a lot of philanthropy through her BeyGOOD foundation, but just like a handful of her musical predecessors, outside of that, she also uses her music to send positive and pivotal messages to the masses whether it’s around police brutality, injustice, or simply taking pride in our skin and in our Blackness.
Tumblr media
Kendrick Lamar attends The 2023 Met Gala Celebrating “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line Of Beauty” at The Metropolitan Museum of Art on May 01, 2023 in New York City
Staying on the music tip, I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention rapper Kendrick Lamar. His music has become a battle cry and often an anthem to keep folks going in the fight for equity and equality. The struggle may be real and the task daunting, but just like Kung-Fu Kenny said: “we gon’ be alright.”
Tumblr media
Michael B. Jordan attends the 2023 Vanity Fair Oscar Party on March 12, 2023 in Beverly Hills, California.
It would seem Black Panther and Creed star Michael B. Jordan’s involvement in activism was already engrained in him thanks to his childhood rearing, but the actor-turned-director didn’t abandon those ideals as he aged. Whether he’s donating his time and resources for LupusLA or marching in the streets in L.A. in support of numerous Black men and women who’ve lost their lives to police brutality—or even portraying one of those men onscreen—one thing’s for certain: MBJ is just ad dedicated to the cause as he is his professional ascent.

avrillavigne: Like many others, I’ve had a hard time knowing what is the “right thing” to say about the ongoing tragedies that the Black community have been facing for far too long. I’ve been following incredible leaders and important voices and learning more and more each day. One of the people whose message and leadership has resonated with me on many levels is Kendrick Sampson (@Kendrick38). Kendrick is from Houston, and is an actor and an activist, known onscreen for his roles in Vampire Diaries, How to Get Away with Murder, and most recently, HBO’s Insecure. Offscreen, his radical and unapologetic approach to activism led him to co-create BLD PWR (“build power”), a nonprofit initiative to build a community of freedom fighters within the entertainment industry to liberate oppressed and vulnerable communities. You may have seen or heard Kendrick over the past few weeks on the front lines of the protests in LA, on CNN and other major news networks, doing Instagram lives with everyone from Sherrilyn Ifill (@NAACP_LDF President) to Kerry Washington, or as an invited speaker at @CAAAmplify’s “Town Hall.” He is the definition of a “WARRIOR”, using his beautiful spirit to inspire others and his voice to lead an entire movement. I’m honored to have Kendrick taking over my Instagram account Friday, in order to continue educating us all. Thank you Kendrick, for your ongoing fight for justice and equality.

Hey let’s talk about this
https://www.bldpwr.com/hollywood-4-black-lives/
We all know Hollywood has a massive diversity problem. Just ahead of the Oscar ceremony this year, Financial Times posted an article exploring the diversity statistics in films and in The Academy itself. Their results were disheartening, especially considering the data collected only went as far back as the early 2010s and we are quickly approaching 100 years of Academy Awards.
One of the first things they point out here is how deeply influential films are in our society. I love movies, and I’m sick of just waiting around for them to put diverse stories on screen. Accelerate change.

Wow. Pleaae check out BLD PWR. I saw this from Chadwick B.'s I.G.: Due to Hollywood’s immense influence over politics and culture, all of the racism, discrimination and glass ceilings Black people in Hollywood experience on a regular basis have direct implications on Black lives everywhere." The manifesto is excellent. Its like everything Viola, Taraji, and Gabrielle have been talking about in thr past five years.
I saw that on Chadwick’s IG too and will be checking it out!! Thank you for letting me know! Honestly it’s needed. Hollywood has been complicit for way too long!

This is an open letter by Black creatives demanding that Hollywood divest from the police and commit to other anti-racist initiatives. The letter was organized by the Build Power Foundation, an activist organization whose goal is to harness the power of the entertainment industry to address social issues, with anti-racist activism at the heart of their agenda. It was founded by Kendrick Sampson, most recently of Insecure and who also just released a new film, Miss Juneteenth.
I highly recommend following Kendrick’s Instagram account, or at least checking out his feed for a direct look at what it’s been like on the ground in Los Angeles these past few weeks.

TOP INTERNATIONAL FASHION NEWS OF THE WEEK
Tumblr media
This week in fashion, Emma Watson has a new role with Kering, and Joan Smalls launches an online donation platform. Find these stories and more as we uncover the top international fashion news of the week.
1. Emma Watson Begins New Role with Kering
Emma Watson has started a new role with Kering, the parent company of Gucci. The actress and activist have begun a position as Chair of the Sustainability Committee of the Board of Directors, where she will discuss the sustainable impacts of fashion with brands like Gucci, Saint Laurent, and Balenciaga. She also launched her App, Good On You, which rates clothing brands based on their ethical and sustainable standing. “There’s a bigger story to be told about the conditions in which our clothes are made, the resources that have been used, and the impact they’ve had on communities,” she said.
2. CFDA Announces its Funding for Designers
The CFDA and Vogue Magazine are giving 36 companies grants as part of the ‘A Common Thread’ initiative. The second round of funding allows the companies to share over $2 million, with slightly more than half of the donation being distributed to 18 fashion brands, 13 retailers, three factories, and two organizations. A Common Thread will donate the remaining $1 million to ICON 360, a new charity that offers financial relief to designers of color in the United States. “The global pandemic continues to impact the entire fashion industry, which needs our support now more than ever. The second round of funding allows us to help additional brands, retailers, and factories through the severe challenges of this time,” said Tom Ford, the Chairman of the CFDA. “We are also incredibly pleased to be able to provide funding to the new Icon 360 grant program from Harlem’s Fashion Row, which supports designers of color and reinforces the CFDA’s important work to create systemic change within our industry.”
3. The Slow Factory Launches Open Education Initiative
The Slow Factory is launching its Open Education initiative for black, brown, indigenous, and minority ethnic communities in fashion. The project is in conjunction with brands and designers such as Studio 189, House of Waris, and Collina Strada. It launches in autumn and will teach lessons on social justice, sustainability, and activism. “When it comes to sustainability and activism, currently there is a gap between well-meaning intentions and thoughtful action,” said the company. “Slow Factory aims to bridge this gap through the power of knowledge.”
4. Joan Small Launches Online Donation Platform
Joan Smalls is donating 50% of her salary in support of the Black Lives Matter movement. Also, she is launching an online donation platform, Donate My Wage, where others can do the same. The site suggests companies and individuals donate parts of their annual salary to the cause, with various options available. The supermodel has chosen 11 organizations to support the cause, including Black Women’s Blueprint Bld Pwr and Color of Change. “I knew that I wanted and had to do more,” she said. “Donating a portion of my salary will make an impact, but I wanted to do something that gave anyone and everyone the opportunity to act and donate.”
5. Balmain Debuts Resort Collection
Balmain has debuted its resort collection via digital platforms. It was produced in lockdown and features many references to the 90s pop culture. “It’s a colorful and happy collection,” said Olivier Rousteing, the Creative Director of Balmain. There are more than 400 looks for women and 300 for men, which was presented in a digital showroom. Pieces include oversized blazers and mini skirts in shades of pink, yellow and blue, with classic 90s patterns and references to cult films such as Clueless and TV shows like Miami Vice. “We need to bring some joy because right now the fashion world is kind of sad. Everybody is worried about the future, but instead of being worried, instead of words, put some action,” he said.   Source: The Trend Spotter Read the full article
