The writers.
Calia has always been there, but she was brought into focus during "Before the Storm," a novel written to vilify Sylvanas and set up the plot (and character assassination) for BfA and beyond. Sylvanas was written to become like her abuser, satisfying Christie Golden's kink for "what makes good people do bad things" [x] that she explores in every franchise she's hired to butcher. [x]
Sylvanas was written as tyrant in comparison to Calia and that was deliberate. Calia exists solely to show the reader how awful Sylvanas is by contrast; she's depicted as this sweet woman who despite her past trauma (surviving the murder of her family/subjects by her brother's hand + scourge invasion + child loss) is loving, hopeful, and willing to forgive her transgressors and move on—like a good victim should. It paints the picture that only a trauma response like hers, a person like her, is worthy of compassion and acceptance.
This is reinforced by how she's rescued and immediately embraced (and still loved) by everyone after being made into a special brand of undead (not the stinky and ugly kind that upsets mortal sensibilities.) She's written to purposefully be the opposite of Sylvanas, which in itself wouldn't be bad (there are all kinds of trauma survivors) if not for the fact that the writers paint Calia as the "right choice" and a "good person" because of those differences.
And it isn't just Sylvanas. The writers fail every single "angry" survivor, especially if female. Through this narrative, they sell the idea there is only one valid way to process trauma (being a doormat) and only one kind of survivor worthy of a happy ending (Calia.)
Their story tells us survivors shouldn't be/stay angry because anger is always toxic, leading to villainy and/or madness. Just look at what they did to Tyrande and the Night Warrior arc. Through her plot, the writers told us vengeance is wrong, turning the cheek is right, and the only way to move on is forgetting and forgiving. They depicted her anger as "losing herself" and "losing what made her good" and made it into a force that nearly "drove her insane." The only reason she didn't end like Sylvanas was because she was forced to "embrace the bad that happened" and give up the need for revenge (justice) as some cosmic greater purpose scheme.
For players who saw themselves in those angry characters, related to their story, the writers gave them a huge couple of middle fingers by continually vilifying and punishing those characters while uplifting a very specific kind of survivor as the only one worthy of a good story. So, Calia could have been a great character, but she was used to tell the audience everything that was wrong with those not like her.
Calia was also imposed on a group of people who always represented "angry survival" due to their experiences and need for that rage to actually endure and cope. This was always the core of the Forsaken, regardless of Sylvanas' existence.
The problem with Calia, the Disney Zombie, is the writers and their intentions with her, what she represents, the message she sends, and what her forced inclusion means.

to elaborate on yesterday's bitchy post
i kinda thought identifying as pan had fallen off since most people had realised their rhetoric surrounding how it differs from bisexuality is transphobic/biphobic/actually pretty homophobic too
the statement that you date because of personality over appearance is reductive and implies that other sexualities don't do that
saying you would date a trans person implies other sexualities wouldn't
saying you don't care about gender at all in reality is just being on the middle of the kinsey scale i.e being bisexual with no real preference one way or the other
and the reason this has been very irritating and discouraging to me recently is, sadly, lifeweaver from overwatch releasing as pansexual. in fact, it was the first leaked thing about him
pansexuality's existence is inherently detrimental to bisexual people like myself as it makes itself out to be the better version when in reality it is steeped in the issues i just outlined and only came into existence at all in 2010 on this webbed site
bi people don't get to have characters that represent us. any character that is bi is always the slut, the cheater, the one whose down for ~anything- and it sucks
in turn, i have had several people in my actual life say they would never date me due to being bisexual. i've been told i would cheat, that they could never because i'm also attracted to men/women, i've had people ask if i want to be in a threesome and act offended when i say no. none of these experiences are unique to me
i don't really go looking for representation in my media. i did when i was younger but now i'm just going to consume what i want to. i just genuinely find it so gross that a property that has purported to be progressive and in a lot of ways has been, instead of finally giving the bisexual community one character whose bisexuality does not define them and is not a stereotype, went with pansexuality, a sexuality that others bisexuals, homosexuals, and trans people alike by saying 'no, you are driven by animalistic lustful urges, i am holier and purer and will date even those weird gender non conforming people, in fact i don't even see gender so trans people are also on the table for me, see how i am better than you?'
anyway if anyone has a way to petition blizz to change his sexuality to bi so i can have this W i'd appreciate it

Water And Paper (MM #4119)
Water and paper don’t have much in common. At least, I don’t think they do. Add Dairy Queen into the mix, and it’s much tougher to connect them all. The one way that they’re currently connected is through a lawsuit over the name Blizzard…

Even in the immediate aftermath of historic cold as far south as Florida and Monterrey, sub-freezing temperatures across the Deep South, and sub-zero-Fahrenheit blizzards sweeping across most of North America for a week or longer around Solstice/Christmas 2022, this cruelty and disregard for dignity/life continues unabated. Blizzard Lead Dev: "I just don't get it. People don't like our games anymore. We have over 45 gay NPC couples in Dragonflight, we have lesbians ride off into the sunset awkwardly in Diablo 4 and even Lorath finds it awkward when it happens, we have vitiligo options, we have multiple gay and multiracial characters in Overwatch 2, we changed the names of male and female to body type 1 and body type 2, turned all the sexy paintings into fruits, added green hair to humans, made the Night Elf heritage armor kind of not sexy, put a transgender dragon in the game, what the fuck do people want from us?"
Blizzard Forum Dev: "Well, I've been looking at the forums. Players want tails on worgens and-"
Blizzard Lead Dev: "I've GOT IT! Let's make a follow-up to that quest where the two centaur dudes want to get married, let's make the player prepare their wedding and they do this gay little talking-at-the-same-time and giggling moment, the gays do that stuff right? At least 4 people will find it cute!"
Blizzard Forum Dev: "Sir, it really seems like all of this pandering might be just a thinly veiled attempt to make people forget about that unfathomably disgusting sexual harassment lawsuit by catering to the loudest people on social media in hopes they'll start loudly advertising how PC we've become and we'll somehow rebuild our dwindling fanbase from new players who are suddenly creating accounts just to watch gay dragons talk about how much they love their mate. I think instead of trying to pander to people who hate our game and our company and always have and always will, perhaps a better option is to cater to the dwindling player base we have left, and to the people who left because of these stupid-ass politically correct things we keep doing. We can't just make people forget what our company did by pretending we're good people. What we CAN do is listen to our players. They don't want more gay NPCs in WoW, they don't want frumpy unattractive characters in Diablo 4 like forced fat druids, they don't want the Amazon's butt to be covered up in Diablo 2 Resurrection, they don't want Overwatch 2 to emphasize the importance of a character being gay or autistic above any semblance of personality or relevance to the story they might have. What they want is what they loved for the last 20 years. They want the company they grew up with back. The company that made Alexstrasza, Kerrigan, Whitemane, Sylvanas, the Eredar Twins, Mercy, Widowmaker, Tracer. Not the company that made a Thai femboy and made the crafting tutorial NPCs in Dragonflight absolutely offensively and objectifyingly flamboyant gay guys."
Blizzard Lead Dev: "You're... you're right... ... You're right, man. I dunno what I was thinking. You're right. People want the old Blizzard back."
Blizzard Forum Dev: "That's the spirit, man! We can turn this around, it's not too late. We can bring back the game that every really hot girl at every Blizzcon loved making skimpy cosplays for!"
Blizzard Lead Dev: "Orisa is transgender now"
Blizzard Forum Dev: "God fucking dammit sir"

Blizzard is perceived as always trying to release Pro-Inclusivity news to deflect from breaking Negative Press about its many lawsuits. It that an accurate perception?
No. It takes months to develop, market, and push content live. Blizzard is constantly releasing news because they run multiple live-service games that each need a steady feed of new announcements to keep the player base interested and engaged. This means that we are, at most, a few weeks away from a new announcement of any kind. The reason there's so much inclusivity content in their announcements is because many of the Blizzard developers themselves actually care a great deal about inclusivity.
The people who are most upset at Blizzard as an institution are not actually the gamers, they're the developers - the people who are participating in those lawsuits you mentioned. The gamers are mostly tangential to all this - they might get some recreational outrage out of it, but I doubt the gamers could name any of the developers or perpetrators of bad conduct in question. The pro-inclusivity content and the sentiment surrounding the lawsuits are for completely different groups of people.

for the record your conviction to drop Blizzard like the toxic pile they are and start blogging endlessly about fantasy rich guy genealogy is very inspiring even if I have no clue what the fuck is going on in Martin's books and I will never unfollow
well i read the contents of that lawsuit and it was really upsettingly uniquely awful. and theni made a very angry slightly catty comment about how changing the name of the overwatch cowboy named after one of the serial abusers was a transparent PR move that was just going to make it look like they were changing while absolutely nothing happened systemically and there was no real accountability. and then i got dogpiled and called a cunt and an abuse apologist who did not care about the welfare of the employees and also no one ever liked me anyway by many of my former mutuals.
so now i delete any of my old wow posts when they come up because like. we’re done, clean break, not sharing my thoughts with that audience anymore. it’s better this way because now i actually enjoy myself on my silly little blog.

Hey you - I'm here to echo some of the words that other folks have said and be one of the echoes that helps keep you going.
I've had a super similar falling out with Overwatch. My overgosh overwatch timeline is still one of the top internet search results even after I threw in the towel years ago during the sexual harassment lawsuit; talking about Overwatch now makes me so frustrated and bummed out. It was so incredibly important to me - one of the only fandom spaces I've really ever dove into face first (I even frequented the Blizzard Forums, which is... A wild place to be. I was that invested). And now it's just... Well, you know.
But you know what? Your work is evocative, full of life and character. You give Junkrat and Roadhog such joy and story that the ding-dongs of Blizzard's executive team were never going to green light or allow their team to create. Your work, your animated expressions and fantastic gestures and overall killer hand skills, have completed a story for these characters that many people were desperately looking for and thankful to have (myself included, a person who listened to Roadhog's idle grunts/breathing foley on the clock as white noise).
It doesn't matter what origins the characters are from, as far as I'm concerned any of the characters you bring to life are worth watching simply because of your storytelling abilities. There's not a lot to Overwatch, but there's a lot to your work - and that's worth sticking around for. And you should, in my humble opinion, stick around for yourself.
I really hope you can find your passion and feel grounded in yourself again. Burnout and depression are unwanted friends of mine, and even if it's not easy to even make it day by day, you're worth it just for being you. I'm grateful for the work and creativity you've shared, but even just drawing for yourself or taking a break to spark that pilot light back in your brain is so important. You are fantastic, and I'm sending all of my energy your way through this rough time.
hey : D wow it makes me even madder reading your experience with ow. like i know my own thoughts and struggles of my mutuals with it, really trying to establish a distance here with the source but it's so frustrating reading that such a widespread alienation with their fanbase has driven so many people away. like i know of a few people who are still so much more involved than i am, like beta-testing and all that and there is just so much frustration going around... and that's just speaking of the game dev decisions. the sexual harrassment lawsuit should have actually fully blown everything up, but that would not have been fair to the people actually putting love into this, like all the game devs that are not responsible for the actions of these few idiots that decide the outcomes (also how did you survive the blizzard forums tho you must be the most hardcore person ToT)
also i'm shit with words but thank you so much, i'm having a hard time expressing the feelings that your words have made come busting through my chest. like i know that we as a fandom have all collectively filled in the gaps and even more in a story that blizzard wouldn't even give a damn about, it's nice to know that i am a part of that, that people have been looking for more and that they found (and hopefully continue to find) it here <3 that's huge. and nothing the stupid decisions of a handful of money hungry twats can ever diminish
hope you're having a wonderfull weekend (and it was a delight to go through your blog here <3!)

Clearing up some misconceptions about Overwatch 2 and its "Overwhelmingly Negative" reviews
Okay I just wanted to write something 'cause I saw a lot of misinfo and some confusion about what Overwatch 2 (OW2) even is, especially now that it's getting more (negative) attention again. Starting with what OW2 even is and how we ended up with such a hugely negative reception.
What's the difference between Overwatch 1 and Overwatch 2?
OW2 is free-to-play
OW2 is 5v5 (1 tank instead of 2 tanks)
OW2 has a different monetization scheme. It has a new buyable currency used to purchase cosmetics (mainly skins) from the store and to buy the battlepass
OW2 purchases are all cosmetic items EXCEPT when a new hero is released. Purchasing the battlepass will give you immediate access to a new hero. Otherwise, you will need to play enough games to unlock them.
Everything else in OW2 is either standard update stuff (new heroes, new maps, new gamemodes, etc) or carried over from OW1 (Yes, you keep all your cosmetics from OW1)
Why did they create Overwatch 2?
The original vision for Overwatch was a PvE game:
The Overwatch team, especially at its inception, considered itself an MMO development team. As we transitioned away from that original concept and started creating Overwatch, we included plans to one day return to that scope. We had a crawl, walk, run plan. Overwatch was the crawl, a dedicated version of PvE was the walk, and an MMO was the run. (Source 1)
Overwatch originally intending to be a PvE game was brought up in a Tweet 2 years before as well (Source 2).
Overwatch 2 was meant to be a major sequel with the focus on PvE.
What happened to PvE?
I recommend reading the full blog post, but I'll try to summarize.
Essentially the original vision of PvE was:
Story Missions (co-op gameplay with cutscenes)
Hero Mode (skill trees for each hero to upgrade and play in PvE)
When you heard the news that "OW2 PvE was cancelled", what was actually cancelled was Hero Mode. Story Missions were just released this season. This is still a major blow to PvE, because Hero Mode was the piece meant to give a reason for replaying the PvE missions over and over again.
PvE was cancelled because ultimately it was too much work, and they were not making enough progress at the cost of the original PvP game. (More on this later)
Why is Overwatch 2 receiving so many negative reviews?
I'm gonna give bullet points but I wanna address something first: A lot of people have mentioned the lawsuit against Activision Blizzard for sexual harassment and discrimination (More info) when talking about why Overwatch 2 is being reviewed poorly. While this is obviously a serious issue within the company and the game industry at large, the truth is that if this was the only problem, we would not be seeing reviews this bad. Unfortunately, the average gamer does not care about how game developers are being treated. See Epic Games crunch culture and the lawsuit against Riot Games for sexual harassment and discrimination. Fortnite and League of Legends/Valorant are doing just fine now.
Here is a list of some reasons why I think Overwatch 2 is being reviewed so negatively:
The original PvE vision with skill trees was not realized
Preferring the old monetization scheme of "buy the game once, earn cosmetics" instead of "game is free, buy cosmetics"
Believing the current cosmetics are overpriced
Not having immediate access to new heroes unless you pay
Preferring 6v6 gameplay to 5v5
Frustrated with content delays (Like Hero Mastery)
Expectations for more content on release
Misinformation (like PvE being completely cancelled)
Bandwagoning on the Overwatch hate train
Other pretty standard reasons to dislike a video game (game balance, don't like the lore, etc)
Distrust in Blizzard/the development team
And the last one is one I want to talk about a little more
Why is there so much distrust between the development team and the community?
While Overwatch 2 was in development, Overwatch 1 was abandoned. And the community largely felt that the content brought by OW2 was not worth the time lost for OW1.
OW2 was announced at Blizzcon on November 1, 2019. Since its announcement and until OW2 was released, Overwatch received 1 new hero and 0 new standard maps in 3 years. It previously was getting 3 new heroes and ~3 new standard maps each year.
If OW had kept its release schedule, we would've had 8 new heroes and 9 new maps when OW2 released. We got 3 new heroes and 6 new maps.
When OW2 released, lots of people wondered why they abandoned the game to make a sequel nobody asked for and with not enough changes. The developers are already aware that they made a mistake:
When we launched Overwatch in 2016, we quickly started talking about what that next iteration could be. Looking back at that moment, it's now obvious that we weren’t as focused as we should have been on a game that was a runaway hit. Instead, we stayed focused on a plan that was years old. Work began on the PvE portion of the game and we steadily continued shifting more and more of the team to work on those features. (Source 1)
This was especially frustrating for the people who were only interested in PvP.
But some people did hold onto the hope that the eventual release of PvE would make up for the lost development time for PvP.
And then the scope for PvE was cut in half, and once again the community felt that they were being served half-finished content.
It's been a continuous cycle of:
Overwatch announces a new feature
Everyone gets their hopes up that this new feature will fully deliver on everyone's expectations
The feature does not meet expectations (and is sometimes less than what was originally teased) or is delayed
IMPORTANT: And while this is all frustrating for players, and it makes sense to negatively review for these reasons, please never harass individual game developers. 99% of the time, game developers are just as passionate about the game as you are. You don't know what kinds of hells are going on behind the scenes that are preventing them from doing their job well.
Does Overwatch 2 deserve all of the negative reviews?
Obviously it's subjective, but I just want to throw it out there that I still think that Overwatch at its core is a good video game. I still play and have fun playing both ranked and quick play. I think the gameplay is very good. Everything else surrounding it is very frustrating and discouraging at times.

I would rather not get involved with this discourse but i haven't seen anyone else mention this anywhere, so i might as well.
Its all very well calling for boycotts for the currently relevant wizard game because of who its supporting, and i agree dont get me wrong. Not buying something because the profits will be used to do wrong makes perfect sense, and so does encouraging others to do the same.
But why dont you practice what you preach. All these posts about hogwarts legacy while activision-blizzard is stacking sexual harassment lawsuits like its jenga, Scott cawthons response to the outrage about his Republican donations was to step back from the franchise, but i have seen nothing that indicates he plans to change his worldview or his spending habits.
Why is no one using any of this passion against Rowling to go bigger, why is no one in overwatch stream chats calling put streamers, why are there no posts calling people out for buying fnaf games. Do we really have that short of an attention span as to allow these problems to be buried under this new problem? Or are people only hopping on the hogwarts legacy train because its whats relevant right now. Will this go the same direction and fizzle out once a new drama pops up?
IDK, criticism is always welcome but it just doesn't make sense in my mind how people can so passionate decry one thing while completely ignoring another thing with similar issues that is actually still pretty relevant, hypocrisy isn't the right word unless they are paying for those things but it gives an impression that this whole debate is less about not supporting people who do bad things and more not supporting one specific bad person while kinda turning a blind eye to everything else
