Séance #13 - Le militantisme en ligne : ça marche?
Chers lecteurs,

Black Lives Matter social media
the subject of my social media selection is the Black Lives Matter social media account (Blklivesmatter). Black Lives Matter is a decentralized political and social movement that seeks to highlight racism, discrimination, and racial inequality experienced by black people, and promote anti-racism. Its primary concerns are incidents of police brutality and racially motivated violence against black people. I chose this social media because it relates to our topic in class about the civil rights movement. a nationwide movement for equal rights for African Americans and for an end to racial segregation and exclusion arose across the United States. by how the " March on Milwaukee " contributed to the national fight for civil rights for African - Americans and to passage of the federal fair housing act in 1968. Like an example of this is in our week 4 articles with the articles titled Richard Dryer , " on the Matter of Whiteness " and Peggy McIntosh " white privilege : unpacking the invisible knapsack" , and Peggy McIntosh " white privilege checklist". Black Lives Matter is a protestested social group demanding the police and kkk afilliates to stop killing the black community just because they have a dark skin tone. Police and the whites were killing these African American's for the wrongful reasons. an example of this is in Minnesota where a man named George Floyd was wrongfully accused and a police officer kneeled on his face and he was telling the officer " I can't breathe". In addition there was a teenager named Trayvon Martin who was just eating skittles with his hood up and gets fatally shot and murrdered for no reason at all. What I mean by white privilege is that the whites are more superior than any other color. An example would be Emmitt Till and how was brutal murdered and hunted by the neck for whistling at a white lady. Black Lives Matter also relates to week 7 African Americans pdf. Like I said before Black Lives Matter is a group that wants justice for the whites wrongful actions and the civil rights movement had no say in anything. the African American wasn't always like this with the 13th amendment in 1865 with slavery being abandoned and the 14th amendment in 1868 were all slaves were granted citizenship in the great migration. In week 1 race and ethnicity with the articles titled Gregory Jay, "what is multiculturalism" with how the world was segregated. It was the black community vs the white community in this battle for equality. Blacks couldn't do things that the whites couldn't do like drink out the same butler , and eat at certain spots at restraints and justice just wasn't equal to the African community.

Multimedia Journal: Social Media
The social media selection I chose to look at was the Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation website, https://blacklivesmatter.com/ . The Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation is an organization that supports activism in the Black Lives Matter movement and gives space for change and liberation. They intend to have an inclusive, collaborative, resilient movement for social justice.
Their website has a lot of resources for people all around the world to access, including calendars of events, calls to action, demands, funds for survival, Black Artists, infographics, and informative posts.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Photos taken from the Instagram page: @ blklivesmatter
Their mission statement is “to eradicate white supremacy and build local power to intervene in violence inflicted on Black communities by the state and vigilantes. By combating and countering acts of violence, creating space for Black imagination and innovation, and centering Black joy, we are winning immediate improvements in our lives.”
Something cool about Black Lives Matter is that they value diversity, accessibility and intersectionality in uplifting people of different genders, sexualities, abilities, incomes, and backgrounds.
Black Lives Matter ties into the foundation of our class and a lot of what we’re learning about. I’m taking a look back at the article we read in week 14. In Dom Apollon’s “Don’t Call Them “Post-Racial.” Millenials Say Race Matters to Them,” younger people were asked about if race still matters, and how it affects people today. It’s very prevalent that there is systemic racism in housing, education, social settings, and more that won’t go away without great action of social change. This is why the Black Lives Matter movement is important, in continuing to organize and advocate for social change through climate justice, fair housing, demilitarization and many more avenues. Here is an excerpt from that article:
“Ever since Obama came into office, I’ve noticed that the political climate has become really racist and racial too. First, it was kind of towards blacks, and now we are having issues with the borders and "let’s hate the Mexicans." And 9/11–"Oh, we still hate the Muslims." And white people, there are groups of white people that are, like, "Yeah, let’s embrace this racist attitude we have," and now it’s becoming okay to say some of these things in a political nature in media. And, wow, this is insane. –Theresa, 24, biracial (Filipina and white) college graduate”
It's studies conducted like the one this essay was on that show just how important it is to continue fighting for social justice, because these issues are not just going to go away as time goes by.

Blog Post 3
Official Black Lives Matter Instagram Page
The official Black Lives Matter Instagram page has been incredibly effective in raising awareness towards racial injustices and advocating for change. Their platform aims to encourage a community that openly discusses the injustices towards minority groups, primarily African Americans. The BLM page uses compelling images, thought-provoking captions, and articles to share information and news related to their cause, as well as resources for people to take action and get involved in the movement.
One of the biggest ways that Black Lives Matter Instagram sparks conversation about race, ethnicity, and cultural diversity is by featuring posts that highlight the experiences and voices of minorities. The result in sharing these stories creates a safe space for people to not only share their own experiences, but to also engage in discussions involving the systemic racism and discrimination that exists in our society. The page also encourages their followers to educate themselves about history and the ongoing impact of racism today.
As well, The Black Lives Matter Instagram page uses their platform to shed light the work of other organizations and activists who are currently fighting racial injustice. Featuring other organizations creates a sense of solidarity in our fight for racial justice. Through the use of hashtags, such as #BlackLivesMatter and #JusticeForGeorgeFloyd, the page creates a sense of unity around a common cause.
One of the most notable posts from the official Black Lives Matter Instagram page was a tribute to George Floyd, who was killed by a in Minneapolis police officer in May 2020. The post featured a powerful image of Floyd, with a caption that read, "Rest in Power, George Floyd. You will never be forgotten." Along with many others from the page, this post served as a reminder of the systemic racism that exists in today’s society and the urgent need for change. Another post that generated conversation was a collage of images that highlighted the stories of Black women who had been killed by police in recent years. The images included captions that shared their names and their causes of their deaths. The post helped people to remember the names of these women and to continue to fight for justice on their behalf.
The official Black Lives Matter Instagram page serves as an important tool in the fight against racial injustice. The page creates a space for open discussions about race and sheds light on the stories of those who have been affected by systemic racism, and the page encourages people to get involved and to take action.

FELA For Ever Lives Africa Vous appréciez mes idées de sorties culturelles ? Multimedia Blog - Entry #3
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For my third multimedia journal entry, I examined the most prominent Twitter account for the Black Lives Matter movement.
https://twitter.com/Blklivesmatter?s=20&t=-8dYMpnasRRzhxW7OzIt6w
The Black Lives Matter movement has existed since 2013 (according to this Twitter account’s associated website) when it was created in response to the acquittal of the man accused of murdering Trayvon Martin. Black Lives Matter is a widespread and decentralized movement that has quite an expansive set of goals. This Twitter account/website (blacklivesmatter.com) states that the mission of the BLM movement is to “eradicate white supremacy and build local power to intervene in violence inflicted on Black communities by the state and vigilantes.” Indeed, the BLM movement has become well-known in the United States and even across the world. BLM took a leading role in particularly prominent nationwide protests in 2020 in the wake of George Floyd’s murder by a police officer. BLM is perhaps best known for its fierce opposition to police brutality and discrimination by law enforcement against African Americans in the US.
Tumblr media
As an outlet for BLM news, the BLM Twitter account could be seen as a significant player in what amounts to a modern civil rights movement. Such movements, including the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s, are intended to rally support to achieve positive results and greater equality for disadvantaged minority groups, such as African Americans. In this way, the efforts of the Black Lives Matter movement draw on the success stories of past civil rights movements centered around identity. As Gregory Jay explained in What Is Multiculturalism?, “(20th century) movements for group solidarity did in many cases provide individuals resources to defend interests and values” (Jay, 5). One major difference, however, is that the BLM movement is more decentralized than many past movements and relies on 21st-century technology, such as social media (like this Twitter account), to organize its efforts rather than specific leaders or larger non-governmental organizations.
Tumblr media
While BLM is perhaps most famous for its opposition to discriminatory practices by law enforcement, this is far from its only purpose. The BLM Twitter account reflects the BLM movement’s wide scope by repeatedly sharing and amplifying important issues to many people of color in the United States. BLM casts a wide net of objectives, trying to foster cultural development and conversations about racial issues. BLM retweets and engages with material such as a 1619 project documentary by Hulu. This is reminiscent of 1493: Lies my Teacher Told Me reading and work we did in class (Loewen, 62). The 1619 project is an attempt to challenge the glorification of aspects of American history that often disadvantaged minorities. They are also attempting to reframe history to confront the role of African chattel slavery in the US.
Tumblr media
This BLM Twitter account also has an eye for art and culture. The account promotes artists of color, such as the organization and associated Twitter account aptly named Artists of Colour. They tweet out encouragement and share news about African American success stories, such as a young African American becoming the youngest selected trainee to a Geospace astronaut program or a celebration of black women in science. Additionally, they promote criminal justice reform.
Tumblr media
One interesting observation and connection to class I made when examining this profile is a consistent trend in focusing on youth issues, such as student debt relief. We have learned through the Colorlines article “Don’t Call Them “Post-Racial,” that young people, in particular, including younger than millennials, are holding increasingly nuanced and changing views about identity in comparison with past generations. They are also more likely to emphasize the intersectionality that often arises between identity and socio-economic status. Author Dom Apollon states  “young people of color are more likely to independently bring up race, resources, and access to them, while white Millennials are less likely to make connections across systems like housing and education, and less likely to prescribe political action to fix it”. BLM Twitter makes a point to emphasize the accomplishments of young Americans of color and also focus on getting African Americans the resources they need. They, for example, called out the disproportionate deaths of African Americans who rank contaminated water in Flint Michigan and frequently posted about the student debt crisis in America, particularly for people of color.

https://www.breakfreefromplastic.org/2020/06/02/in-solidarity-with-blacklivesmatter/
The social media @blklivesmatter, is a “call to action” as their bio says. They share and talk about the importance of this social justice movement. Black Lives Matter is a movement for African Americans and Blacks and their fight for equality. They post inspirational photos, photos of people who deserve justice, stories of mistreatment, statistics, and so much more. They have 3.9 million people standing with them on instagram but that does not include the people on other social medias or those who stand with them that don’t follow them.
Throughout this course we have discussed “March on Milwaukee” by Margaret Rozga which is about housing injustices that Black witnessed in the late 60’s. Housing injustice in one form of oppression Black people witness which makes it one thing to stand for in the Black Lives Matter movement.
Art is one way to support Black Lives Matter. In this course we saw a lot of pictures depicting people of color and the artists push to support them and help them in some way. When we looked at artists from “30 Americans”, an artist named Mickalene Thomas took portraits of African American Women, sometimes painting their naked bodies. This was her way of showing support to this community and empowering Black women and their beauty. Unfortunately, part of the racism toward Blacks includes associating their race with their looks, “I am not made acutely aware that my shape, bearing, or body odor will be taken as a reflection on my race.” (Mcintosh 1989). This is a quote from item number eight on Peggy Mcintosh’s white privilege checklist.
The Black Lives Matter movement has been widely received and talked about especially in recent years. Their social media was made with the intention to continue that conversation and help bring awareness to racism and injustice. They also encourage white people to acknowledge their privilege and use it for good. They want to help bring all cultures and races together to make change for the better and create an equal and safe world for themselves.
If you want to learn more, they also have a website: https://blacklivesmatter.com/

MultiMedia Journal 3
For this third and final MultiMedia Journal project, the specific social media group I have chosen to write about is the Black Lives Matter Twitter Page. This Twitter page is a page for the Black Lives Matter Movement, which in their bio describes what their message is, “BLM is an affirmation & embrace of the resistance & resilience of Black people.” How it relates to our courses topics, readings, and screenings is by talking about and sharing political matters and the discrimination black people face. They also post about what is going on in Congress, the Supreme Court, and the President and movements that they believe in. Towards the beginning of the semester, there was a reading from Peggy McIntosh with regards to the White Privilege Checklist, this Twitter page, points out the privilege white people have over black people and
other minorities.
The Black Lives Matter Twitter page also has multiple tweets about queer  rights and womens rights. For example, they retweeted a post, “I will be interviewing 100 LGBTQ elders over the next two years for a project I am calling “OLD & QUEER.” I believe it’s vital to collect stories from our elders while they’re still alive, and I’m excited to share the first one here:
Pat and Paulette, both 70, in Harlem, NYC” (@lostblackboy) They also posted a picture that said “Protect Black Women’s Reproductive Rights” (@Blklivesmatter). Their overall message and meaning for their account is for equal rights and for the Black Lives Matter Movement, but they do also post about Black Workers Rights and like previously mentioned, Black Women’s Rights and Black Queer Rights. On May 1st, the Twitter Page retweeted a tweet originally posted by Amazon Labor Union, “May 1st is known as International Workers’ Day or May Day, but it’s also the day that The Congress of Essential Workers was founded on May 1st, 2020. Happy Anniversary @TCOEW & solidarity to workers everywhere organizing for a better world! #UnionStrong”. With these three examples, it shows that this Twitter page uses intersectionality.
Both the work of Hank Willis Thomas and Black Lives Matter Twitter page represent racial and ethnic identities. Both are very powerful and can hold many meaningful messages about discrimination and equality. One of the works of Thomas that stands out to me is where the person's arm is sticking through the door. This is a very symbolic symbol for the movement and it’s seen in multiple posts.
The Black Lives Matter Twitter page has also shown support for other intersectionalities of race and ethnicity. From a tweet posted by @amaonlabor, the Black Lives Matter account favorited, “Happy May Day-International Workers’ Day from the Amazon Labor Union! Thank you to all the workers who showed up in solidarity. All power to the working class! #UnionStrong” (@amaonlabor). The photos show multiple races and ethnicities coming together to protest workers rights and abolishing ICE.
One final example of how this account relates to our course is a picture they tweeted November 30th, 2021. This photo can be considered connected to Margaret Rozga’s article, March on Milwaukee. On page thirty, Rozga provides a photo that shows multiple white people holding up signs, being blatantly racist, and showing white supremacy. Rozga quotes the photo as, “Father Groppi’s open housing marchers faces counter-protestors who carried signs reading “God is White'' and “Father Groppi Rest In Hell’” (Rozga, pg. 30). The photo from BLM shows a modern day meme of Drake and them passing on white sumpremacist.
Overall, the Black Lives Matter Twitter page exhibits many similarities to our class. Through their posts, their retweets, and favorites, it can be related to many parts of our course topics, discussions, and readings. Not only does this Twitter page talk about one ethnic and cultural diversity, it also mentions others and other intersectionalities of race, gender, and sexuality.
