🚨 Palestinian Ministry of Health in Gaza:
An urgent appeal for sending blood units from outside the Gaza Strip.
The Palestinian Health Ministry in the Gaza Strip appeals to all international and Arab institutions, especially the World Health Organization, the International Committee of the Red Cross, the Red Crescent Society in the Arab and Islamic countries, and the Arab Blood Transfusion Services to urgently work on providing blood units and their components from all blood groups due to the dire need to save the lives of patients and the wounded.
The Ministry of Health suffers from a lack of basic materials for blood donation, whether empty blood bags or viral testing materials, as well as blood group tests, as our people in the Gaza Strip have donated more than 40,000 blood units during the aggression despite the harsh conditions they are living in from displacement and starvation.
We call on all relevant parties to respond urgently to our appeal and send large quantities of life-saving blood units for the wounded and sick in the Gaza Strip.

Just out of curiosity; does putting a blood donor sticker on your door or in your window keep Jehovah's Witnesses away in other countries? I never see it mentioned when people complain about constant visits from them but here it’s common knowledge that a blood donor sign/sticker works like a cross against vampires.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I was never bothered by them until we moved into our latest house and suddenly they showed up every other week. Unfortunately i can’t donate blood because of my medication but I got hold of a blood donor window sticker and now we only know they were in the area because they left their Watchtower magazine in our mailbox.

Donated blood earlier today. The health screening questions have changed since last time I donated two months ago.
Biggest change is they removed the question asking if you are a man who's ever had sex with another man. There's also some modifications to questions about HIV infection. Instead of being a binary about whether or not you've had HIV, the questions are now about if you've been infected in the last 3 months, had sex with someone who was infected within the last three months, and if you're currently taking any medication for it.

Quebec's blood agency has put an end to its blood donation eligibility assessment procedure that discriminates against gay and bisexual men, as well as others in the LGBTQ2+ community.
As of Sunday, Héma-Québec lifted its policy that restricts people in this group from donating blood for three months after being sexually active.
From now on, all potential blood donors in the province —  regardless of sex, gender or sexual orientation — will undergo the same initial evaluation. The assessment of risk for sexual behaviour will therefore be based on an individual basis, rather than on belonging to a group considered to be at risk.

If you lost like a litre of blood or whatever but fixed whatever was wrong and ur fine now, does the blood just. Come back?? I'm sorry this sounds so stupid when I actually write it down lol but like.... if u didn't get any blood from like transfusions (I think that's the word? sorry I'm so sleepy and not thinking rn) would the blood that you lost just somehow be created again???? Sorry maybe im just really sleep deprived rn
Yes it does!
Your blood is made of 4 main components: plasma, red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets.
Plasma is the liquid, protein-rich part of the blood that carries the cells, platelets, enzymes, and wastes where they need to go in the body. Plasma makes up about 55% of blood volume. It gets some of it's proteins from the liver and some from the bone marrow. Since plasma is mostly water, it is very quick to regenerate, usually taking only about 48 hours to return blood volume to normal after donation or blood loss, assuming the person is well hydrated.
Red blood cells are what make blood look red. They make up 35-45% of blood volume. They carry oxygen from the lungs to the cells in the body, and carry carbon dioxide from the cells to the lungs to be exhaled. Red blood cells are made in the bone marrow, and take between 4-8 weeks to replenish themselves after donation or blood loss, assuming the person has adequate iron reserves.
White blood cells are immune cells that make antibodies and fight infection. They account for about 1% of the blood volume. They are made in the bone marrow and take about 3-7 days to replace themselves after donation or blood loss.
Platelets are tiny fragments of cells that start the clotting process after an injury. They make up less than 1% of the blood volume. They are made in the bone marrow and take about 72 hours to replenish themselves after donation or blood loss.
Of all of these, the red blood cells take the longest to regenerate themselves, so it would really take about 2 months total if someone lost blood to completely regenerate that blood. Now, since the red blood cells are needed to circulate oxygen and carbon dioxide, and we can't go without that ability for 2 months while we make more of those cells, a transfusion provides some red blood cells to cover the gap. Those cells will eventually die (red blood cells only live about 120 days), but they will give the body a chance to make it's own cells again.

Okay this might be a weird thing, but when I was struggling with feelings of worthlessness and being a burden to people and struggling with su*cidal ideation when my depression was at its worst, one of the things that helped me was thinking about the fact that I could donate blood. The fact that I was alive could literally help save other people's lives. Even though I (thought I) didn't have any useful skills and even though (I thought) no one wanted me around and even though (I thought) I was a burden to my family and friends, just the literal fact that I existed made a positive impact in the world.
To be clear, your life is just as valuable even if you can't/don't want to donate blood.
But since this was helpful to me I thought I'd pass it along in case it could help anyone else.

Today was a messed up day for me, as well as for many people in Kyiv, as it began with an air raid at 3 A.M., and the loud sound of explosions followed by the sound of the air raid sirens. Those were 10 ballistic missiles russia sent to our city, ruining apartment blocks and causing fire. Everything happened so fast, it was impossible for anyone to run and hide in any kind of a shelter. Now I'm afraid to sleep in my bed at night.
Yesterday I enrolled in a blood donation event at my university, all by my own initiative. I always wanted to be a donor and I finally got a chance to try this out. But I was unprepared for the food restrictions and mostly stayed half-hungry for the whole day, as well as the following morning. It also took me a lot of energy to get to the university on my own, because of the sleepless night and the lack of nutrition.
Mostly the people who were donating blood were the kids from the military department of our university, I guess it was compulsory for them to take part in this event, while I came on my own choice. I did the needed tests, got my blood type and pressure checked, drank some sweet tea and went to the classroom to have my blood drawn.
I'm not the type to be afraid of blood, nor was I forced to come here. I even argued with my grandma over me choosing to donate blood when some of my other relatives had problems with this before. Everything was fine until the very end, like 2 minutes before the needed level was reached. My body decided that hunger, tiredness and all the stress I've been under these days was enough and tried to make me unconscious. And when the doctors tried to help me, my stomach turned against my breakfast and ruined my sweater in the most embarrassing way possible. After that the pressure was normalized and I finished the donation without any complications, so I'm glad they didn't have to throw the whole portion of my blood out. The doctors made some jokes about hungry students (a funny stereotype in our culture) and made sure I had regained my strength before I went home.
The mobile service is yet to come back, so back then I only told my parents that everything was over successfully and went home, where I had a good amount of rest and washed my clothes. I still feel a bit lightheaded but mostly I'm very embarrassed. It's scary how it feels to succumb to your own body and I feel like I should have commanded it to obey and not to embarrass me in front of everyone. But I know that back then I barely understood what was going on around me, I had no power over myself at all. Still, next time I'll just make sure to eat well and to sleep well before donating blood. It just feels like I was a big child, helpless and dirty, and that I made a trouble for everyone. It ruined my happiness over finally trying to help my community.

Try to donate blood and plasma if you are eligible. You will help save so many lives overtime, especially many of our fellow disabled people of whom many need transfusions.
It’s simple, not too hard, doesn’t hurt, and it saves lives.
Scared you’ll faint? It happens. Even I did it! They sat me up, I started to faint, so they laid me down and gave me double the snacks you usually get (did I mention you get snacks? One for salt, like a bag of chips, one for sugar, like a chocolate bar) and some extra juice and a quick check before you go. They’re very nice about it and it doesn’t stop you donating in the future!
In the UK, they give you a bracelet and a keychain through the post telling you your blood type which is even cooler, especially for disabled people since we might need medical folks to know that.
In short, please just get the needle in your arm and get the blood in a bag. It does so much good.
