Website Design Research

Before designing the website for Alter, I did a little research to see pre-existing websites and the kind of design choices they've made. Leaf and Clay has a very elegant, calming and minimalistic vibe to it. It has made use of minimal icons, a mix of serif and san serif typefaces to create hierarchy and lots of white space. By far, this was one of my favourite designs. Bloomscape's website makes use of an earthy colour scheme that gives it a very eco-friendly, sustainable feel. All of the products are available in a range of earthy shades, in keeping with the theme and their product photos are very professional and elegant looking. Horti's website design follows a similar theme - it makes use of sleek, rectangular elements that give it a clean, sophisticated look. It also has minimalistic product shots that seamlessly blend into the website background which I really liked. I also really liked their logo which has quite a contemporary, modern feel to it. However, towards the end of their landing page, I thought their design was quite basic and safe and didn't fit in with the rest of the theme.

After looking at these websites, I do have a few ideas in place for Alter's website.

HW Week 2

“How to think differently about doing good as a creative person”

I found it to be very engaging when Arenyeka brought up the “real” objectives of the creative. It got me thinking that, at times, we may fail to recognize the impact our personal objectives of a project can very easily guide us (often in the form of bias) to form opinions and make decisions which serve us more than they do the client/community/users. I found myself reflecting on past projects of my own, where “simple” decisions for color palette and typography can be swayed by my personal bias; where I may have missed opportunities to appeal to the target audience with the design choices I made. Her highlighting the point of increasing our awareness for our real objectives in projects is very much the same. We may choose to spend less time and energy on making choices and problem-solving issues by way of ignorance for the sake of aesthetics, our desires to learn or practice new skills, or any of the other reasonings she had given examples of. This, I feel, can have powerful impacts - especially so in app development - on the outcome and “success” of projects that are aiming to benefit/help/do good for a client/community/users. I also appreciated her focus on the idea of creatives as a facilitator, encouraging the infinite education we go through - as all people should - in order to really be able to do good. Her point that sometimes it is better for us to take a step back, that there is someone else who is better educated and suited to offer help in that field, and that there are always opportunities for us to do good in ways that are better suited to the knowledge and backgrounds of our own. It is important to not force this idea of having to constantly offer help to others when it may be detrimental to them with the skill sets of our own.
