It isn’t like that, for many people. For them, love is the point: the axis around which everything else revolves, the destination at the end of a long, tumultuous journey. Realisation, confession, resolution. Happy ending. That’s how it goes. And love was a point in Tony Stark’s journey, except it came towards the beginning, rather than the end. The issue, instead of the solution. He hasn’t been alone on the trip, of course. Steve’s been there: sometimes three steps behind, sometimes waiting up ahead by the turn of the road. They’ve sprinted and stumbled, sometimes stood still and refused to move on ahead, sometimes thought of turning away altogether. Steve and Tony’s story began after they fell in love, and this is about how they fell in everything else.

I read this Way Back When, and I remember thinking I'd never seen such a convincing portrayal of MCU SteveTony and how a genuine relationship between the two of them could emerge while still accounting for (hold your puke) canon. Still rock-solid all the way through; knock against the fic at any point, and it will answer back with a fun two-part joke. Lush stuff.

“Well, well. I’ll be goshdarned,” Tony’s voice says from behind him, “lookie what we wrangled here.”

“That,” Steve says, not looking around, “is the worst southern accent I’ve ever heard.”

He slants his eyes to his left and he can see Tony in the reflection of the pristine glass, his eyes picking out the details in the glow of the room.

Tony stands just inside the entryway, a whiskey in his hand, hoisted in a toast. He is indeed dressed to the nines in a leather get-up. Gliding forward in his boots and his jeans and chaps, Tony sips the whiskey and eyes Steve like he’s approaching the dessert table. He is wearing a gun, Steve spies as he moves. A shoulder holster, not on his firm thigh like Steve imagined. The look is still good. Steve imagines now, the strap of it across Tony’s nice shoulder blades. A fringed leather jacket in deep maroon that looks splendidly tailored sits over a pressed cream shirt with big metal buttons, down to, indeed, a big metal belt buckle in the shape of — America. Steve turns his head around finally, in order to give Tony an unimpressed look. Tony grins widely, unabashed.

“Nah,” Tony goes on, “jus wait till I get to talking about —“

“No,” Steve says and then turns around fully, “I don’t think I’ll wait for that at all.”

“Shame,” Tony says and backtracks in the room to find the light switch on the walls.

The lights come on in a wave of warm fluorescents that turn the suite into an overexposed target.

“Is that nec —“

“Oh, you are in a priest’s outfit. Thought my eyes were playing tricks on me,” Tony’s voice drips into a syrupy exaggerated drawl as he walks back towards Steve. His eyebrows rise on his forehead. “My, my,” Tony presses the glass of whiskey to his mouth but doesn’t drink from it, simply stares at Steve.

“I’m in a priest’s habit, yes. But not for the party.”

Tony’s eyebrows rise further and he takes a long drink of whiskey, the apple of his throat working in a bob before he says, “Steve, I never thought we’d reach the day when you suggest a roleplay kink scene before me. Truly, I am —“

“That is not what this is about.”

Steve frowned. The voice was too clear to be coming from a truck or a car, which meant they must be on foot. He looked at the heavy fall of the snow. No one should be out in this.

Or, Tony is an omega in distress, and Steve is just the alpha-in-shining armour he needs.

On screen, Kang’s standing on top of a bus in the center of a wrecked intersection. He’s holding a dark-haired, gangly teenager, clearly using the kid as a bargaining chip. At this point, Kang is clearly losing the fight and is looking for an escape route.

Steve winces as Kang hurls his human shield in the direction of the camera and bolts. The poor teen bounces on the pavement, bangs his head, then skids to a rest close enough to make out his face in the video.

Steve almost drops the tablet. The kid is Tony. He’s at least fifteen years younger, mustache barely grown in, and bleeding from his forehead, but -- still Tony.

Iron Man is strong and muscular and masculine, and Tony Stark wears a three-piece suit and walks with his hips stiff.  No colors other than navy or muted red. No prints bolder than a pinstripe. No luxurious silks and linens. His outfits are tailored to hang crisp and straight, his slacks hemmed to a conservative medium break.  The public won’t know. Nobody will go digging deeper, for classified ads and witnesses who remember him from half a decade ago. Steve will never find out all the ways Tony’s ruined himself.
