When building a spear, what matters: you, building or the spear?
At the recent FSNNA conference (were you there? Did we meet? If you’ve been there, the panel recordings and the discussion space is still available for a week.), Katherine Crighton, Dr. Naomi Jacobs and Shivhan Szabo introduced an online game where you can create new fanworks for your blorbo for the newest fannish sensation: Blow the Man Down. The catch is, this fannish sensation is not a TV show. The story is reverse engineered through the fanworks created for it, but in a sense, it doesn’t exist. Your blorbo also doesn’t exist. My blorbo is real cool, though, their name is Bogdán.
When it comes to fannish creation, there are some key theories to reference. Participatory culture is one, we also talk about gift economy, affective labor; can they possibly explain why we are able to act fannishly when there isn’t even a canon to be fans of? Are we experiencing real feelings for a fake blorbo because we participated in their creation, committing to this silly man? Or is it because of the nature of the work, we used fannish practices to create them, which is inherently affective? Or is it, as the presentation already points out, due to the spear theory: we build our blorbo by piercing many blorbos through and that creates our type? I dare you; play the game and let us discuss our experiences. Or if you’ve ever gonched, what did you think of it?

I don’t want it to be “you came back’ ‘never left” again because this is bigger and that would push aside the pain
BUT I still really want the parallel so may I propose
“You came back” (ed)
“Never should’ve left” (stede)

Have you been following the wild Our Flag Means Death/ Blow the Man Down code-cracking adventure spun for us through Tumblr, Twitter, AO3, and many other platforms by @javiddenkins and team? With the fic now concluded (and it's incredible- you can catch up on it here, and see Evie's rundown of all the surrounding multi-platform chaos in a Twitter thread here), Javid has reached out to the OFMD Fic Club Discord server offering a debriefing chat. That's taking place on: Friday 23 June (4pm PDT/ 7pm EDT), or Saturday 24 June if you're in BST (12am)/ CEST (1am)/ AWST (7am)/ AEST (9am)/ NZST (11am)- check back against other time zones accordingly! If you'd like the chance to read along as Javid answers questions they've chosen in advance (with follow-up questions and chat allowed), you can find Fic Club here. We'll be outlining the parameters Javid and co have set in the chat, which will be taking place in a dedicated text chat channel. Before and after that, we already have a Blow the Man Down channel under the NSFW Recommendations category.
(Fic Club is also one of the friendliest spaces in the OFMD online world, where we chat about what we're reading at all times, and feature 3-4 different authors for chats each month.)

ATTN Javid Denkins-ers
If you’ve only been following along with the “not a game” ARG on @javiddenkins‘ page on Tumblr, you might not have realized that this thing has gone totally multi-platform (Twitter, AO3, maybe even Wattpad?)!  A ton of accounts, all talking about the fictional show (”Blow The Man Down”) from the fic that the audio Morse code sent us to!
If you’re wondering what I’m even talking about, @eefaevie has been keeping an excellent thread over on Twitter explaining everything that’s been worked out.  Unfortunately, Tumblr nerfs posts with external links from showing up in searches, and I want as many people to see this as possible, so I’ve made a separate post with the link to Evie’s thread here:
https://www.tumblr.com/turq8/713250871316824064/a-summary-of-javids-arg?source=share
Now that you’re all caught up, you can see there’s obviously a lot to keep track of.  There are currently about 11 Twitter accounts, 8 AO3 accounts (with 7 legitimate fics written), and 2 additional Tumblr accounts, all interacting with each other and giving out clues to the BTMD canon.  I’ve made a spreadsheet to keep all of it straight, which you can find in this post:
https://www.tumblr.com/turq8/713251454279974912/the-javiddenkinsbtmd-arg-spreadsheet?source=share
I think it’s going to take all of us working together to keep track of things and figure this out!

I was looking up Atlantis since the last* Man From C.A.M.P. novel had Atlantis (and I will include it in my book in a different way), and I stumbled upon...something.
See, I want the world of my book to balance in between plausible and implausible, and so sometimes I worry if I'm being too unrealistic (even with making Atlantis as the ceiling of believability for my Agents of C.A.M.P. series). And then reality goes 'no, I'm that weird, libertarians tried to make their own capitalist Atlantis'.

Meanwhile: Am I done with the Javid Denkins nonsense? Ahahahaha no.
Specifically, here, have an episode of the podcast I co-host where we collaboratively gonch the second season (and third) of the fake, AU-of-OFMD show Blow the Man Down:
As a note, I reference extensively @turq8's spreadsheet of "known" BTMD canon, for which: THANK YOU.
We dropped this episode now because:
Our Flag Means Death is dropping in LESS THAN TEN DAYS, this is as normal as I can be about it: coercing my siblings into talking for hours about an alternate universe of it
I reference it during the ep, but I'm also coauthoring a presentation and poster for the Fan Studies Network North America conference in October... and it's all about creating fake media to grow real feelings, using the parallel examples of Goncharov (where it happened organically) and, TA DA, Blow the Man Down (where it was purposefully seeded and managed)
...and I am not above using my siblings to think through my nonsense out loud, they are evidently my personal Warhol Factory of absolute bullshit and I wish I felt more shame about it

In case you missed it on Facebook, here it is on YouTube.Film Noir Foundation prez Eddie Muller responds to film noir fan questions fielded by the Foundation's Director of Communications Anne Hockens. In this episode, we discuss NOIR CITY 2024, noir musicals, which city in the U.S. was the most noir, children in film noir, “post-modern noir”, and more. We wind up with a spirited discussion about who we would cast in a THE THIN MAN remake. On the cat front, Charlotte is a background player; Emily and Tizzy won’t come out of their trailers.  Want your question answered in a future episode? We solicit questions from our email subscribers in our monthly newsletters. Sign up for free at https://www.filmnoirfoundation.org/signup.htmlEveryone who signs up on our email list and contributes $20 or more to the Film Noir Foundation receives the digital version of NOIR CITY Magazine for a year. This week’s questions:
1. Is there such a thing as a noir musical? —Loren from Chicago
2. Which city in the U.S. is or was the most noir, and why? —Kathleen from Chicago
3. Eddie, do you have a favorite movie studio to visit in L.A.? What studio tour you recommend if one could only take one tour?   —Alan, San Anselmo, CA
4. I have always wondered about Mildred Pierce’s clothing on the day that she is questioned by the police.  She is wearing a fur coat and fur hat.  Is that normal for LA?  Didn't anyone question the choice?  —Elizabeth
 5. Since Hollywood was still suffering under the code, I wonder if that was the reason the Dix Steele in IN A LONELY PLACE went from a serial killer in print to just another angry male on the screen.  Maybe it was more of the audience not being willing to see Bogie as a strangler of women. —Mark
6. Can you recommend noir films that feature children, and were there child actors who appeared in several noirs?—Phil, Dedham MA
7. I'm wondering if the Foundation or TCM have come across a good Technicolor print of SLIGHTLY SCARLET.—Jerry
 8. Neo-noir spans more decades than the original classic era. If we consider the beginning of neo-noir to be from 1960 onwards, is it fair to start defining neo-noir into different chunks. For instance, I’m starting to hear chatter that there is a post-modern neo-noir period we are living in. —Brett, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada
9. I'm wondering your thoughts on BLOW THE MAN DOWN and if you consider it noir.—Ryan, Valley Village, CA
10. Eddie, what was the first noir film you saw? How old were you, where did you see it, and did you realize there was something “special” about it?—Janet

I don’t know that this movie gets its due respect. Or does it, fuck if I know.
Regardless, this is one of my favorite endings in all movies. I love it.
