WHERE is my human AU where Crowley & Aziraphale are glassblowers with opposite artistic styles competing for a residency at a glass institute and accidentally fall in love or should I write it myself?
Challenge: Indulge in Dinner
Tumblr media
Both of these pieces were made by sculptor and glassblower Elliot Walker.

watched blown away season 4! i detest morgan she gives me 2013 edgy tumblr vibes. her stuff isnt even that scary/creepy and theyre all “ooo terrified to my core” like shut up.
spoilers for s4 ending
ALSO she shouldn’t of won, genuinely there was so many times she shouldve been sent home!!! definitely shouldnt have won! one of the criterias was creativity and she just did the cell block tango murders in glass form. tbf it is a cool installation (im a sucker for interactive work) BUT IT WASNT HER IDEA??? it wasnt a sloght reference or a clever twist on it, it was just the 6 murders in glass form ://// boring. she shouldnt of won the spooky challenge either he mushroom was boring asf and average.

I'm really liking this era of reality show competitions that I believe started from the great british bake off, where it´s a competition, everyone wants to win, but it´s such a friendly and supportive environment.
Like, I love RuPaul's Drag Race, but I watch it because of the genuine talent and culture behind drag and even though it makes really good memes or interesting plays like in All Stars, sometimes the drama is too much.
So it's nice to have shows like Next in Fashion, Blown Away, Academy of Chocolate and such, they make me so happy. Like, honestly for mental health purposes, go to the Reality Show section of Netflix.
Bonus points for also doing these shows about not regular stuff that allows people to showcase their talent and those in the field of arts get an impulse and profit even if they do not win.

i really can't recommend Blown Away on netflix enough. all of the competition, none of the bullshit. pure skill, glass smashing all over the shop. stakes have never been higher, and yet it is what it is. i have watched 8 episodes back to back and i've never felt more alive.

If you're tired of Great British Bakeoff fuckery like Mexican Week but it left a friendly-reality-competition-sized hole in your heart, you can also watch the same format but with flowers 💐 (Full Bloom, The Big Flower Fight), jewelry 💍 (All That Glitters), pottery🍯 (Great Pottery Throw Down), glassblowing 🍾 (Blown Away) and woodworking 🪵 (Good With Wood aka Handmade, which even has Mel Giedroyc on it).
There are also like a dozen other bakeoffs in other countries. Canada and Australia are my faves (I haven't watched the non-English language ones yet bc I can't read subtitles during work).
[Don't watch the 1st season of Australia with Kerry Vincent it is a desecration of the Bake Off name worse than anything Paul Hollywood has ever done. Straya completely course corrects after that though. Do watch the first two seasons of Canada with Dan Levy hosting and channeling all his David Rose energy into it.]
If I'm forgetting any please let me know, I am a bottomless pit of content.

My hot take (hehe) is that Blown Away, the glassblowing competition show, should take a page out of early Project Runway's book and prominently feature the contestants going out drinking together and getting into nonsense roomate drama that bleeds into the workroom. What a golden era of stupid fun television.

Blown Away (Netflix)
This season is HOT and FIERY and DANGEROUS and we have a HUGE HOT SHOP! Our contestants are here to compete for some prize that none of the viewers really understand or care about! This is...
BLOWN AWAY
~
[interview clip, Contestant A:] I'm here to WIN
Judge lady: Hi everyone, here's our guest judge, Dr Sandy McGlass from Fancypants University
[they walk in]
Contestants: WHOAAAAAA *nudge, gasp, knowing nods*
[interview clip with Contestant F:] Dr Sandy McGlass is a LEGEND.
Viewers: I have no idea who this is
Guest judge to the contestants: In my job I like/do things, so you better impress me
Judge lady: Your job is to make a piece based on this theme, and then we're gonna judge you
[interview clip, Contestant B:] I'm gonna take it right to the final
Generic presenter: Your time starts... now!
~
[shots of molten glass getting rolled around in colourful sugar crystals, people breaking up giant crayons, etc]
Contestant D: [drawing on something with chalk] I'm just doing this for my kids, you know?
[interview with contestant E:] I've done a lot of glass and I really like it, so I'm making this cool thing
Contestant A: Blowing guy, blow into the tube
Blowing guy: [blows into the tube]
Contestant A: Stop that
~
Presenter: What's your favourite topical item?
Judge lady: Probably this thing, hahahaha
Guest judge: ????? I guess??
~
Contestant F: [just, putting a stick into a fire hole to scoop up some gloop] I'm in this minority group so I'm making something to represent my culture
No one: The final winner will definitely be a white person though
Contestant C: Making caaaaane~
[interview clip, Contestant D:] I'm clearly the best, but I am worried about [contestant who is clearly the best], though
~
Contestant F: [glass falls off stick and smashes on the floor]
Assistant: [puts on a bomb suit and picks up the smashed thing and runs and puts it very carefully into the magic cupboard]
Presenter on the observation deck: Annealer... isn't that like, a species of mammal that eats insects?
[interview clip, contestant F:] Glass breaks a lot
[interview clip, contestant C:] Glass breaks a lot
Judge lady to presenter: Glass does break a lot, yes
~
Contestant A: [sweating all over the place] I started out doing this other job, but then I started blowing glass and never looked back
Contestant B: [squidging some 1,000ºC molten glass about like it's toffee, you want to eat it] I'm just doing this for my kids, you know?
~
Judges: We're all very concerned, Contestant D is really good at glass but also really bad at it. And Contestant A is really bad at glass, but also really good at it. Do they have what it takes?
[several shots of contestants being really sweaty and sticking glass together with other glass]
[interview clip, Contestant C:] I'm here to win
Contestant B: [bashing glass with hammer] I just really love glass
~
Judge, from observation deck: Contestant A is good, but also bad
[some guy out of shot rolls a die to find out who should shout about time remaining]
Judge/presenter/contestant: X UNITS OF TIME LEFT, PEOPLE!
Contestant (any): What, there is less time left than before?????
[interview with contestant who blatantly displays 3+ ADHD symptoms in one sentence]
Contestant E: Okay, let's put this hot glass thing in a place/position
[it breaks]
[interview with Contestant E:] That was the main part of my piece and there are literally x units of time left, I do not have time to make another, I'm just going to have to wing it
Presenter, from the observation deck: That's tough, man
Judge lady: It is, yes
Random inhabitant on the shop floor: TWO MINUTES LEFT, PUT YOUR GLASS IN THE ANNEALERS!!!
[much running around in bomb suits putting things in magic cupboards]
~
[peaceful twinkly music, and a slow shot of each piece in the gallery with a description/explanation. Contestant E's has a broken item in it.]
[judges look at each piece]
Judge: This is pretty good
Other judge: But is it also bad, though
Judge: I guess, but is it also good though
Presenter: I would eat that
Judges: Lol
Judge/presenter: [pun based on show's theme]
[polite chuckling]
Presenter: Let's go hear from the contestants
~
[cut to clean tidy hot shop. contestants walk in in slow motion and face the row of judges]
Judge: Contestant B, tell us about why you made this sucky choice
Contestant B: [something about their kids and/or how much they love glass, determination, etc.]
Judge: Thank you
Contestant B: *nods*
Other judge: Contestant E, I noticed that part of your piece was broken, talk to us about that
Contestant E: I broke my piece but then I decided that it's meaningful actually
Judges: *nodding*
Judge: Contestant D, do you think your piece is enough to take you to the next round?
Contestant D: I'm just doing it for my kids, you know?
Presenter: Okay, we'll go and talk about you behind your backs now
[cut to interview with Contestant B:] I'm not ready to go home, you know?
[cut to interview with Contestant D:] If I make good glass, I stay. If I make bad glass, I go home.
~
Judges and presenter, hushed voices, in a secret huddle: They all were good, but also they all sucked; but were they actually good, do you think?
[cut to the hot shop face-off again]
Presenter: Just a reminder of the prize that has been repeated 17 times so far and that none of the viewers remember or care about
Judge: Our top best favourite is
.
.
.
.
.
.
Judge: Contestant C.
Presenter: And one guy [gn] is going to be leaving the hot shop today. That person is
.
.
.
.
[shots of individual nervous contestants]
.
.
.
.
.
Presenter: Contestant A
Contestant A: [nods, smiles, hugs everyone on the way out]
Presenter: Everyone else rules. All of you remaining white people will be going on to the next round.
[interview with Contestant A, wearing the same outfit as the interview at the beginning when they said they were here to win:] At the end of the day I came here to have a nice time and/or do it for my kids, and I think I can go home proud, I basically won
[end credits]

Here we are again. This latest chapter and all your thoughts and comments and posts just have my brain spinning. Warning - This is a long one.
2 (of the many) things I've been hung up on today are the Grandpa reveal and a comment about He Tian being interested in Jian Yi in the early chapters. Which I thought so too until rereads and He Tian's run to save Jian Yi. I've had so many questions about this scene for a loooong time. Still do.
Tumblr media
Because He Tian didn't get the info from something He Cheng accidently said or did, or from some one in Cheng's household (my first thought) because Tian was surprised to see Cheng there as well.
Tumblr media
And it isn't something obvious because Cheng started to ask about it again when Tian was sick:
Tumblr media
And He Tian wasn't overly worried about Jian Yi 's kidnapping - likely because the rescue operation was in progress/done when this convo happens.
Tumblr media
So he's still getting info somewhere and he knows exactly who Jian Yi is - yet he never shares this common thread between them. He's not remotely surprised when Jian Yi says he's staying at He Cheng's - though he does look unhappy about it - and I don't think it was a truly spontaneous plan to bring Mo to see sharks later that day. He was always going to go there that night.
Tumblr media
So with the Mr. Jian being grandpa not dad, my first thought was "oh shit, I bet they're cousins". And than promptly realized nothing supports that and eeew - they are hella flirty with each other. But I don't think I'm far off, just more likely close friendly "cousins" versus biological.
It's very common for criminal organizations to have two faces; the legal one and the mafia side. This is so the mafia side can benefit the legal one (funny how they get all the best contracts kind of thing) and the legal side launders money, etc. The He's are very very rich and well respected - see the response when He Cheng had to go to the police station and how He Tian's teachers talk about his good family - but Mr. Jian is He Cheng's boss. Obviously the Jian's aren't hurting either but even in the future art, He Tian is the rich one. So my current theory is the He's run the legal side (and are old money) and the Jian's the more criminal side. I think it's been that way for generations, and everyone's hands are dirty - excuse me - involved and trained in each aspect.
Sooooo this long ramble and how my two thoughts interconnect.....
I don't think He Tian was told who Jian Yi was. I think he figured it out himself when they first become friends in middle school. Tian was obviously exposed really early on to all elements of his family business and we know he's a very smart kid. And I think we forget sometimes as fans that when we first get to meet He Tian isn't when Jian Yi does. Because even in the early chapters they are really close and confidants. He Tian knew immediately when Jian Yi was upset here:
Tumblr media
And Jian Yi has deep conversations with him:
Tumblr media
He Tian knew exactly why Jian Yi wanted to skip:
Tumblr media
And He Tian was actually the first person Jian Yi really came out to:
Tumblr media
In fact, He Tian is his person of choice for advice:
Tumblr media
In the early chapters Zhan Zheng Xi noted Jian Yi was really popular "for some reason". I think a lot of that reason is He Tian figuring out who he was, wanting to get to know him/keep him close, and then not only genuinely adoring each other but the realization that they share a commonality in their orientation.
The future is going to hold some interesting surprises!
