25/08/23-Lakeside and home
Photos taken in this set: 1. An eyecatching Blue-tailed Damselfly which I enjoyed seeing at Lakeside, it's been great to see these increase in number recently, a lovely damselfly species. 2. A nice Light Brown Apple moth in the kitchen last night. 3. Woodpigeon in the sun this evening. 4. Some yarrow and dandelions on the green out the front, the tall clumps of yarrow a nice prominent sight on the green out the front from home of late. 5. Carrot by the flower bed area on the way to Lakeside. 6, 8 and 9. Vibrant views on the lovely Lakeside lunch time walk. 7. One of two charming Common Darters I enjoyed seeing landing in the southern fenced off area, I saw a fair few of both sexes on the walk as a whole. This one settled and I enjoyed a glorious few minutes watching and photographing it. It was lovely to just focus on looking at it and take in many details, the way it landed with its pellucid wings covering its eyes reminded me of a wedding veil and the eyes themselves were a source of my fascination, complex patterns and shaped like half a planet I felt privileged to see them move around to take in surroundings. This was a big moment feeling the joy of having a connection with nature, for a short time getting to share this insect's world. And on my first time out since Tuesday as I just felt well enough to do a walk in the midst of my bug this was a moment I needed with a classic summer species I'm loving seeing the past few weeks. 10. Some yellow leaves at Lakeside.
Another big point with insects in the southern fenced off area was seeing my first Small Heath here since spring, with Red Admiral, many marvelous views of Meadow Brown, Speckled Wood and Migrant Hawker over the lake seen well. Great Crested Grebe, Carrion Crow and Magpie with Moorhen and Chiffchaff heard were other avian highlights of an enjoyable walk. Collared Dove, Starlings and Goldfinch including young were good to enjoy at home today. It was also nice to see a Small Dusty Wave moth again before bed last night. Bird's-foot trefoil, fresh vetch, dock, red bartsia, St. John's-wort, white and broad-leaved clover, great willowherb, purple loosestrife, immaculate looking bramble flower and some gorgeous lady's bedstraw which is fresh in the southern fenced off area were other key flowers seen on my lunch time walk. Ripe ruby guelder rose berries, hawthorn and rose hips and blackberries were nice to see.

Creature Awaits #244
Each week I plan to feature an amazing creature, admiring God's fantastic artistry. Hopefully it’ll brighten someone’s day to see something new and interesting if they haven’t seen it before. : )
As the Pantone color of the year is "Peach Fuzz", so we'll dive into the second month of this relatively new year by featuring creatures of this cozy, comforting color. : )

The Blue-Tailed Damselfly
A.K.A: The Common Bluetail
Scientific Name: Ischnura elegans
Region: Near still or slow waters throughout Europe and the Middle East
Size: About 1.1"-1.4" (~2.7cm-3.5cm) long with a roughly 1.4" (~3.5cm) wingspan
Interesting Notes: Interestingly, while male adults of this species are primarily blue and black, and female adults are either the same or sport a green or brown thorax, juvenile females of this species can range widely in color. They are generally lighter in tone overall and can range anywhere from violet to green to peach (as pictured.) : )

[ID: Artwork featuring 17 different forms of a bipedal oc. Each form uses the same base, posing simply on a plain or patterned background and facing to the left - each variation has some kind of invertebrate replacing the limbs, and a corresponding color/hairstyle change. The first /default form has giant American Millipedes replacing their legs, with fluffy, striped hair covering their top face, a curly tail, and antennae matching the ones on their limbs, almost resembling a dog / bear. Other forms, from left to right, include a Giraffe Weevil, Mint-Legged Centipede, Stick Bug, Rhino Beetle, Fly, Ladybug, Common Blue Damselfly, Medicinal Leech, Shrimp, Garden Snail, Leopard Slug, Hermit Crab, Hammerhead Flatworm, Velvet Worm, Earth Worm, and Bald-Faced Hornet. End ID]
Swirlipede!
A weird little shapeshifter with the tendency to poke their nose in everyone's business. Dedicated question-asker and party-crasher, fe acts out their many personas via various forms to address situations in fun and dramatic ways. On a journey to discover themself and try out almost every role he can stick himself into.
As Swirli's introduced to more invertebrates to take inspiration from, more forms are bound to develop, so the list remains ever-shifting.

[id: A height chart lineup of the cast of Dimension 20′s A Court of Fey and Flowers:
Captain K.P. Hob (212cm, or 230cm with ears)
Prince Andhera (190cm)
Lady Chirp Featherfowl (165cm but her knees are bent, making her look shorter)
Lord Squak Airavis (180cm)
Gwyndolin Thistle-Hop (144cm, or 183cm including leaf)
Binx Choppley (120cm, or 144 including moth feelers)
Delloso de la Rue (true form 230cm, glamoured form 180cm).
The first image shows the full lineup, and the second and third show each half. /end id]
more detailed description under the cut
Hob is a fluffy brown bugbear with large fangs, yellow eyes, and tall pointed ears. He is dressed in his goblin uniform, a black coat with gold trim and epaulets, and a red sash decorated with various medals, complete with tall military hat. He is holding a halberd with a red handle and silver blade with gold inlay, and his other arm is tucked behind his back, holding onto the inside of the elbow of his opposite arm. His elbows come down to his thighs, and he has a short, deer-like tail.
Andhera is a young Unseelie faerie with dark plum-coloured skin, extremely long pointed ears, and ember-red irises on black sclerae. His hair is in messy curls flopping down to the side, and streaked with dark grey. He is wearing his usual gold and black robe, exposing his chest, which is shiny from the drizzle raining down from their cloud. He is wearing a gold circlet on his head and several matching earrings in their extremely long ears. They are touching the back of their neck with their left (viewer’s right) ungloved hand, and have their right hand half-raised in a timid wave. He is smiling sheepishly.
Chirp is a bird-like faerie styled after a Victoria crown pigeon, pale blue with muted purples and greens in her feathers. She has a beaky nose and her face is fluffy with feathers at the edges. She has a huge poff of feathers on top of her head, decorated with one tall peacock feather. She is back-to-back with Squak, and is posed with one leg kicked out, and her left arm (front) extended to show off her birds of paradise flower tattoo sleeve. Her other hand is holding her folding blade, arranged as a fan, and her hands are clothed in dusty pink gloves. She has a long, raven-feather cloak.
Squak is less bird-like in his face than Chirp, but has stalk legs with talons like the secretary bird he is styled off. He has medium-brown skin and hair that is in white cornrows at his crown changing to tight black afro curls at his neck. From the back of his neck, there are black flourishes also in the style of the secretary bird. He is wearing a green coat with gold detailing, including shiny feathers on the arms. He has a green waistcoat and white cravat, black short knickerbockers, and grey gloves. He also has two thin tail-feathers with black tips. He is standing upright, back-to-back with Chirp, and is holding his hands in a flourish.
Gwyn is a cartoonish- uncanny-looking petite faerie. She has light brown skin, bubblegum pink curly hair, huge purple eyes, a small purple flower mark on her cheek, and a big green thistle leaf sprouting from the crown of her head. She is poised delicately with a tight smile, and perpetually standing en pointe, or on her tip-toes. She is wearing a poofy, frilly periwinkle blue dress with dark blue ribbons and pale pink underskirting. Her ballet slippers are the same blue as the ribbons, decorated with the same daisies, and she is wearing white gloves and gold earrings.
Binx is a stout moth faerie with much more proportional features than Gwyn, but the same eyes. They have brown moth wings folded at their back, and fluffy feelers on top of her dead. She has dark purple, short-ish messy hair and is dressed in dark purple and bronze, with detailing like damselfly wings. Their ears are medium-sized and pointed. She is covered in pinkish blotches on her cheeks, shoulders, wrists, and bare feet, and her skin is otherwise light brown. Their eyebrows are styled in dots, and they are wearing purple lipstick and a paperclip as a hair clip. They have a ribbon as a belt holding a large needle like a sword, a spool of blue thread and buttoned bag. They are wearing the shell from Andhera on their wrist and are fiddling with a Rubiks cube.
Rue’s true form is a huge owlbear (bipedal, top half owl and bottom half bear) with a barn owl’s face and dark talons. They have yellow-green-tinted feathers that become dark khaki as they get longer, and dark brown furry legs. They have big, shiny black eyes, and pink speckles around them. They are wearing a big, bronze and gold gown with a slit in the skirt. It is decorated with metallic peonies and petals matching the living pink peonies on their shoulders and flower crown, and the pink buds in amongst their “wings” which cascade down more like decorative fringing than feathers. They hold out one talon (viewer’s left) in a flourish.
Their glamoured form is a tall, fat humanoid with mint-coloured skin, long elfin ears, yellow eyes, and a hooked nose. They have very long wavy sea-green hair decorated with pearls and neat stubble that glitters heavily, and are wearing a spiral shell as an earring. They are wearing a glittering pale blue form-fitting dress that flares out at the bottom into pale green ruffles, resembling sea-foam. The dress has full sleeves that become fingerless gloves. There is a slit in the skirt which their leg emerges from, showing off leg hair and a light blue sparkling heeled shoe. They have a pearl and teardrop necklace over a pale purple ribbon, and the skirt of the dress is also decorated with strings of pearls. They have their left hand (viewer’s right) on their hip while their right hand leans on a cane with a pearl handle.

05/06/2023-Lakeside and home
Photos taken in this set are of: 1. Spiders in the hallway. 2. Cuckoo spit on some lavender that’s coming into flower in the front garden. 3. Beautiful blue cornflowers in the flower bed area on the way to Lakeside at lunch time. 4, 5, 8 and 10. Beautiful emerald views on another day of lush vegetation and endless bright blue sky. 6. A well grown Greylag Goose gosling at Lakeside. 7. A mesmerising and gigantic Emperor dragonfly, I was so thrilled to take a turn into a meadow area by the lakes and see it whizzing through the air. It’s size apparent as it heavily touched down and I enjoyed some glorious moments spellbound by it as it shone in the sunlight. Captivating moments with a wondrous species that it has been a joy to see these past few days. 9. Some fresh adorable Mallard ducklings which it was lovely to see, seeing some older ones well too.
Dazzling dragonflies dominated my day as on the Lakeside walk I was over the moon to spot a target, two Black-tailed Skimmers beside beach and Kornwestheim lakes. It was a pleasure to enjoy this rather more dainty and delicate dragonfly of striking colours. I love seeing them here at this time of year so I was buzzing to see them. Beautiful Demoiselle, Common Blue Damselfly and exotic Blue-tailed Damselfly were nice to see too. Meadow Brown and Speckled Wood butterflies were good to see as was the terrapin and two sparkling Swollen-thighed beetles on a cornflower and oxeye daisy each at the flower bed were a joy to see on the way. Bird wise at a distance I was happy to get a glimpse of one of the Great Crested Grebe’s eggs underneath the bird on the Kornwestheim lake nest. Moorhen, Feral Pigeon seen well, a fair few Woodpigeons, Jackdaw, Carrion Crow seen well on a sign by beach lake, Magpie, Blackbird and possibly a young Great Spotted Woodpecker stood out too. Plantain, loads of yellow rattle, oxeye daisies, mini pink crane’s-bills possibly cut-leaved crane’s-bill shining like gems, bigger purpler meadow crane’s-bills, forget-me-not, green alkanet, speedwell, shiny thistle, loads of buttercups, red valerian and chamomile and roses including dog roses standing out at Lakeside and home were key flowers seen today. Young Starling including beside House Sparrow and Goldfinch were key birds seen at home today. A smashing vibrant wild day.

Hello Tumblr people
My name is Day, I am 21 years old and a full time ecology student. I've been studying ecology/biology for about 9 years, and yet I hear stories on the regular that leave me absolutely baffled.
I want so share some of my favourites with you, enjoy :) (will probably be updated over the course of time)
Parrots can be taught how to videocall, and actively enjoy calling with other parrots (Kleinberger et. al, 2024)
Some species of (wild) eel only procreate in/close to the bremuda triangle (Nolte, 2020; Browne, 2021)
(google on own discression) Snail love arrows. It's fucking WILD.
Female common bluetails (damselfly) have evolved to look physically exactly like male common blue tails so they are left alone during mating season (Kuta, 2023)
People feeding their christmas tree to goats because it's good for their health (in moderation!) (Laufenberg, 2024)
CHIMPANSEES SLEEP IN NESTS (Wikipedia, n.d.a) As someone who knows nothing about primates, this was an eye opener to me
Talking about monkeys, This video (I taught an ape how to play minecraft)
(CW// animal neglect) "Cloth mothers" (and the maternal-separation tests in general) (Wikipedia, n.d.b)
Researchers continuously trying to bring back extinct animals (such as heck cattle)
The entirety of Flevoland, Netherlands. They really just- did that.
Het Diemerpark, Amsterdam, NL. A park build on thousands of kilo's chemical waste and trash. They just put a big box over it and moved on like it was nothing (Gemeente Amsterdam, n.d.; AGV, n.d).
Why are there so many ways to photosynthensise???
The mirror test, and the single elephant that passed the test (Wikipedia, n.d.c.)
(I wish I had a better source, but for now this will do TvT. It's something my teacher shared in a lecture). Dutch zoo houses rhino's and cows in same area. Calf annoys rhino. Rhino yeets calf into the air, calf breaks his leg, heals, does it again, gets yeeted again, breaks leg again (Damen, n.d.).
Some places place green-light lanterns in the street because green = good for the invironment. This is absolute bullshit. Green is one of the worst colors, and was originally introduced to chase away geese (Spoelstra, 2017).
Currently don't have a source, it was shared during a reading of a ecologist. There's a population of wolves that live soley of fish and stranded carcasses. Wolves have cultures, and you can sometimes tell which wolf belongs to which family based on their diet.
(THANKS TO USER TIGOTEUS!!) Koi (Cyprinus carpio) can be taught recognise and tell the difference between music genres (Chase, 2001). THIS IS SO COOL I DID NOT KNOW THIS. Also shout out to fish Pepi, he tried his best.
Now I shall continue writing the actual essay that I need to finish by tomorrow LMAO <3
