- wait for a min for the guy at the register to notice us
- he takes us to be seated
- Himbo comes and takes our drink order and says that "Trey will be with you shortly."
- We get our drinks & wait 15 minutes for the elusive Trey to come take our order
- Old server woman who reminds me of my grandma and "has been here since 5:30" and refuses to let anyone forget it (it's now 3:15pm) comes to take our order because "Trey is falling behind"
- She takes our order
- She goes to the back & we can hear her telling Himbo that there are dirty tables that need to be cleaned & telling (presumably) Trey what food is ours & that it needs to be taken out to us.
- She brings our food out to us while Useless Trey is nowhere to be found
- We eat our food
- At some point during the meal, she & Himbo (who we learn is a wrestler as he's sweet talking an old couple for a good tip) both leave.
- We finish our food & wait for the check
- We assume that Useless Trey will bring us the check since he was supposed to be our server this whole time, and the Helpful Server Whose Been Here Since 5:30 has apparently left.
- Useless Trey seats & takes the orders of & serves a new table.
- Useless Trey does not seem to notice we are there or remember that we are supposed to be one of his tables.
- We wait about 15 minutes before we realize he probably isn't going to give us a box or the check unless we specifically call for his attention.
- We jokingly consider dine-and-dashing, since no one has come with our bill & both of our actual servers are now gone, leaving us with Useless Trey
- We wait another ~30 mins, joking that we are trapped in Perkins Purgatory & begging quietly between bouts of laughter to be freed.
- I am weeping, my Fiancé's eyes are teary.
- Please god. We will pay any price. Release us from this Perkins.
- We finally get up and go to the counter because I have to go to the restroom.
- I go to the restroom & my fiancé waits for Useless Trey
- Useless Trey comes to the counter and asks if Fiancé wants to see the check
- Fiancé tells him that I'm the one paying so it will be a moment
- Useless Trey says "Oh good, I need a break anyways."
- My man. Your whole shift has been a break.
- Unclear if my tip went to Useless Trey or to Helpful Server Whose Been Here Since 5:30 but I tipped 25% regardless.
- It's now 4:15 and we are finally freed from Perkins.
As much as I love cute and fluffy jeith, I also really like the type where they have a lot of sexual tension. James is esp the type to get pent up about his feelings for Keith and is usually the first one to break and drag Keith to an empty room just to make out with him lol
hrmmm anyone else notice the change in the compendium page for wilson? it used to be “forbidden knowledge” but now its titled “SECRET knowledge” — similar meaning but very different connotation. im excited to see how this ties into the future updates and plotlines regarding maxwells betrayal, the shadow courtier skill, potentially the unused “lunar secret” skill, etc!!
thinking about how shadow wilson/the mod character differs from maxwell’s shadow puppets in the way that the puppets are translucent but shadow wilson is opaque
and how nightmare fuel is translucent, while pure horror is—again—opaque (mostly; see wx’s examination dialogue)
and how the latter was added in the *wilson update* of all updates
thinkin again about how kindly klei treated the character of wes :] rant below
so we all know klei decided to create a character that 1) is flamboyantly gnc 2) cannot speak 3) can barely defend himself in combat 4) requires a lot of extra time, effort, and resources to survive and 5) cannot make up for the cost of those resources faster than he depletes them. aside from the first point, these all make sense from a game mechanics perspective — it fulfills the goal of having a harder difficulty character. at the moment, though, im thinking about the character writing
just any one of those five points above is enough for most writers to pigeonhole a character as the comic relief, or, even worse, a character that is often (perhaps exclusively) written very derogatorily about within that media. im sure you are all familiar with those tropes and how they have harmed queer/gnc people and disabled people
so you can see why the writing of dont starve together, which would include many dialogue interactions between characters, would worry someone like me (a disabled gnc/feminine guy). yet, klei doesnt fall into any of those tropes! the character of wes retains all of those traits — hell, they even pushed them further (more feminine skinsets; being even more resource-costly) — yet the most severe insults are nothing more than “clowns are really weird am i right”. even then dialogue like that is waay outnumbered by positive, friendly interactions! its something you really dont see often, which is bittersweet to say
not only that, but in my experience, characters only ever have one or two of the five traits listed above. thats enough for most people to dislike somebody. so to see a character that requires a lot more care for than average and is joyful and beloved all the while? its really refreshing and comforting, and something thats stuck out in my mind for a while
dont starve together is a video game all about people taking care of each other despite it all. so to see a character like wes so prevalent? its like klei is saying theres a place for people like me, that we’re worth all the effort and that we’re loved. i dont know what exactly klei set out to do, but i hold dear what they have written so far :]
AFTER TEN YEARS THEY IMPLEMENTED THE TRACK CREEPY FOREST IN THE LATEST UPDATE this is an epic win for all my fellow autistics out there we must rejoice
im surprised i havent heard anyone mention the connection between the protagonist of charlie’s play (that represents charlie herself) being a porcelain doll that repeatedly runs away/is betrayed, and, with the release of willow’s refresh, a new skin for willow entitled “forlorn doll” with the description/quote “Why did you leave me?”
when the skin first came out i dont think anyone really knew what it meant — the only lead at the time was that bernie is sort of like a doll, but even so, bernie is very obviously deeply cared for by willow, let alone abandoned. so none of it really made sense
but lately the parallels between willow and charlie have been stacking up: being taken advantage of by metheus/maxwell, being a torchbearer, and now the doll metaphor
most people know of the parallels between cyclum + metheus and charlie + maxwell (if not check that out its super rad), but i havent seen anything about either charlie and willow or wilson and maxwell, the latter pair who have had many parallels ever since the very beginning (strong desire for power and forbidden knowledge being the main one — prime example being wilsons quote in the character select screen “i will conquer this world with the power of my mind!” and maxwell treating the constant as if it were his own as everyone is well aware of lol). all this plus the fact that wilson and willow are often depicted as a pair, as are charlie + maxwell and cyclum + metheus … its all fallin into place in a way
im excited to see what klei does in the next major arc !!! especially with the set up of the survivors being charlie’s tools in order to “free Them” as said at the end of the play .. ough :0
hiiiiii guys this is the beginning of a series of posts im writing on why dst means so much to me as an autistic/trans/etc etc person . a very ramble-y simple thing thats been gnawing at my brain
ok so first up is wendy bc ofc it is , shes been my fav for 8 years lol. i feel like she tends to get characterized as a “tumblr sadgirl” or a dramatic kid bc of her nihilistic and flowery (pun intended) way of speaking, but the description for her victorian skin - “Wendy is the queen of strict, socially mandated mourning practices.” - got me thinking about this a whole lot :
wendy barely ever mentions her family (besides abigail obviously). her father only once, and her mother a handful of times, though with uncertainty sometimes (“What color were mother’s eyes?”). she never mentions having any friends before meeting webber. so we can infer that not only was abigail her best friend and twin sister, she was the only person wendy had ever really been close to at all. in her short we see that even before abigails death she was very introverted and withdrawn when shes not around abigail. so losing abigail wasnt just losing her sister, but losing the only friend she had, the only person she was genuinely close to and loved by. this would destroy anyone but wendy was also just a lonely little kid, only 10 years old in canon (possibly younger when abigail died)! shes a kid wrought with unfamiliar and overwhelming grief
so of course she turns to structure. acting and dressing like how youre expected during a funeral, with a set schedule to follow; reading popular poems and narratives crafted with objective literary devices; even taking and wearing abigails old clothing and parting her hair the way her sister used to. wendy is very set on boxing her emotions in by what she believes to be the standard set by people who have come before her. to her, grief should be artsy, clean, something mature that puts you above finding joy in the little things. a Tragedy with a capital t, nothing more and nothing less.
she remains loyal to this ideology because its the only way she knows how to cope. shes young and grief is such a messy emotion, so she just … doesnt deal with it. that, + the “Wendy clings fiercely to the grief over her sister's death, for fear that moving on would cause Abigail's memory to fade.” vignette, leads to this tragic, sophisticated persona shes cultivated bc she cant get over seeing herself as nothing more than only half of a pair
as an autistic person, boxing feelings neatly instead of actually feeling them bc its too overwhelming is something ive done more times than i can count . i also struggle with seeing myself as an actual person instead of just defining myself by my relationships to other people or by how i think people want me to be. i cant think of any other characters like wendy — her writing is handled so amazingly well, she is so nuanced and ive never seen any piece of media tackle portraying a thought process like hers. it means a lot to me and i feel very seen by it, so i wanted to put in my two cents
thanks for reading guys ^_^ i hope this resonates with you guys as well and maybe makes you consider wendys writing in a way you hadnt before. having a great day <3
the autistic urge to write essay/length analyses about the writing of characters that are not even supposed to be that nuanced . i have the blorbonic plague
having a long-term but relatively unpopular special interest while most people are into it for a few months and then forget about it is so funny to me like . i am but a wise old oak tree, weathered by the passing years, lifetimes worth of history etched into my very being, helplessly watching the world move on… bc a fanartist i like deactivated or something
