Kallian's shield skills were subpar to say the least. She'd managed at the Tower of Ishal, but without fear and adrenaline sparking off all her senses, it was heavy and clunky to use.

"Come on, you can do better than that," Alistair grinned, practically dancing on his feet as though his sword and shield weighed nothing. She grit her teeth, fully aware he was trying to wind her up and even more annoyed that it was working.

"You're a prick," she mumbled, but the corner of her mouth tilted up and he laughed as she imagined a bouncing mabari pup would.

She charged at him, trying her best to shove him with the shield, but he easily kicked her away and she staggered backwards.

"Would you just... let me win!" she said, exasperated. It felt like they'd been sparring for hours by that point; she was sweaty, tired, and had barely landed three hits on him.

Alistair laughed again, and swiftly came at her with his blunted sword. She tried to block him, but he easily anticipated it, dodged the shield, and hit her on the side with the flat of his blade.

"Killed you dead," he grinned, backing away with a roll of his shoulders.

"Oh shut up," she grumbled, rolling her eyes.

"Why don't you come over here and make me?"

Kallian met his eyes. He was still smirking, but after a moment's pause seemed to realise what he'd said. His smile slipped a little, and he blushed deeply, but quickly tried to recover and plaster the grin back on his face. She didn't say anything, and they both tried to ignore the instant tension those words brought.

She clenched her jaw, and charged again with renewed vigour. Kallian shoved at him with the shield, he dodged, but she came back at him and threw her whole body weight behind it. Alistair was knocked to the ground, but she miscalculated, and ended up tumbling with him. Her shield slid off her arm, and she landed heavily on top of him.

With a groan, Kallian lifted herself up onto her hands.

Alistair was staring, wide-eyed and panicking, bright red. They were almost nose to nose.

"Killed you dead," she muttered, holding his gaze.

"Mhm. Uh, yeah," he mumbled, his eyes flicking between hers.

They stayed there for too long. Kallian could count the freckles on his nose twice over if she'd wanted to.

There was a rustle in the bushes, and they both turned sharply to face it, scrambling off each other and rushing to their feet.

"Are you two– oh." Leliana looked between them; a foot apart, flustered, and looking anywhere but at each other. She slowly smiled; annoyingly. "Dinner's ready whenever you are."

They both rambled their thanks and hurried off, praying that she would be merciful with her teasing.

Hearing there heart song in those spaces of messy beauty. There is a s so much joy here and so many choices. Blue wrens want to have fun and enjoy each moment. They choose and choose again as they follow there instinct. It feels appropriate that these little birds are encouraging me to play a little differently. It is that sense of what is it that I love and how do I share more of that? How do I create the energy and connection that is intuitive and often ( as in this small piece) spontaneous.? This is that question of what do I want to focus on and why. I am bought back to the knowing that everything I create is nature reimagined through my art and stories. For me this is a time of letting go and choosing my path as we move into 2023. My focus is always nature and I am choosing to play in this beautiful messy field and see what new stories evolves. For now I am adding birds to my owl focus and holding this as my wondering and curiosities for 2023. Rating: E Pairing: Female Cadash/Solas, Female Cadash/Varric, Varric/Solas Chapters: 13/13 Length: 42,657 words Summary: Maria Cadash hung up the Inquisitor's mantle for the Viscountess' crown, but she's unable to stop her desperate and impossible struggle to stop Fen'Harel from destroying the world both her husband and daughter inhabit. The fact Varric, Maria, and Solas are all madly in love with each other just means she may have enough of an edge to win this game.

Chapter 22: What Festers in the Shadows

Their wounds have festered in the darkness for too long. Only exposing them to the light will cleanse them, and allow them to heal.

“Tess…” A sob tears from his throat.  The wind lashes at his back, blowing his hair across his face. Behind him, the waves crash over the shore, displacing a flock of cormorants. Cal watches their flight with great interest, but dutifully remains at his master’s side.  “Maybe we’re both broken,” Theresa finally utters, still not meeting Cullen’s eye. “I… don’t know how to fix this.”  Her words sink in like a blade, so painful he can hardly breathe. He has no defence against it. No shield against such a raw and vulnerable confession. But the pain brings with it a kind of clarity, as all the self-deception falls away.  “Maybe…” He licks his lips, tasting salt from tears and sea spray. “Maybe it’s not yours to fix. At least, not yours alone.”  As he speaks, a heavy desolation settles over his shoulders, as the finality of it finally sinks in. It was a beautiful dream. It’s lasted far longer than he could ever have hoped. Far past anything he could ever deserve. Now, it’s shattered, and he’s standing amidst the shards, unable to step away without being cut. But it’s the only hope he has of maybe, one day, reassembling it.  Perhaps that hope is foolish. But when it comes to her, he’ll gladly play the fool.
