I really hate the idea that likes are useless or don't tell you anything. they tell you somebody liked your post! you did good and somebody liked it so they gave it a like! the constant cries of "only reblogs actually Do something" feels very… hmm, how do I phrase this?

it's rooted in a sort of warning that tumblr functions differently than other sites in that the number of likes on a post doesn't necessarily contribute to an algorithm that pushes forward certain content (algorithms which, tbh, create a weird sort of feedback loop in which content that is already popular becomes even more popular by getting boosted on the merits of already being popular, but I digress), and so reblogging is the only way to actually spread a post. likes don't make a post "breach containment."

but if likes are equivalent to "positive emotional response" and reblogs are equivalent to "exposure," then discouraging likes in favor of reblogs is discouraging enjoyment of your post in favor of promotion of your post. okay... why? to what end? if the only "correct" mode of engagement is an expanding fractal web of reblogs, and the point of a reblog is only to beget further reblogs... what's the goal?

you've deemed the like as an expression of pleasure useless, so it's kind of difficult to argue that "reblogging a post means they enjoyed it more than if they'd just simply liked it." the quantity of pleasure expressed doesn't matter if you've already devalued the concept of "expressing pleasure and doing nothing else." you can't earnestly say "expressing pleasure is important to me but only if it's accompanied by exposure." so your goal isn't for more people to delight in your content; it's for more people to see your content, and for each of them then to make even more people see your content in turn. and so on. infinitely. just sharing. just exposure.

is that how we got to this point wherein people are genuinely writing essays about how liking a post is actually a backhanded passive-aggressive insult? you think I click the little red heart because I hate you? the logic is so contorted. it relies on the assumption that everyone around you is operating in bad faith, that everyone's intentions are bad until proven good.

what a bitter, paranoid way to live.

Undvik radikal politik - målet är inte att övertyga någon tjomme på SVT om att imperialism och nationalism är fel, målet är att övertyga dem om att det är en JÄTTEDÅLIG idé att låta Israel tävla och att vi är många som bryr oss om detta.

I feel like for all the emphasis on how intense Marcille is around the recovering/resurrecting Falin scene, a lotta people overlook the part where she stops, the only time she pauses on the question of "is this okay"

She asks Laios first. No matter how desperate she is to see Falin again, she still respects Laios and how important Falin is to him. I feel like that says a lot.

It's my birthday!!

I'm 30 now. I had mixed feelings about it at first, but I'm feeling good going into my 30s. I did a lot of growing in my 20s (and excited to keep on changing!!) I'm grateful to have met all the wonderful people in my life right now. From college, conventions, and online!! And glad to still have friends from childhood still around 🧡

I hope I can keep drawing, keep gaming with my buds, and continue saving up for future endeavors.

have been purposefully avoiding to talk about the war on gaza with my dad because i just kind of knew he'd be insufferable about it, but just now they brought up greta thunberg's support for palestine on the news and he commented on how stupid it was so i just had to say something

and turns out that, yeah, my dad thinks israel is completely justified in destroying all of palestine along with its people :)

i've seen a certain ask game going around and never imagined that "scrunkly" would mean "your baby, a character who gives you cuteness aggression". to me a scrunkly is a character who is like a crumpled up paper napkin. a scrunkly is like a scruffy, sick-looking dog with eye crusties who is shaking so much, but nevertheless you like it or find it endearing. the words that come to mind when i hear "scrunkly" are wrinkly and scraggly.

think about the scene in black sails where silver stomps dufresne to death with his prosthetic leg after dufresne makes some nasty ableist comments.

think about the scene in treasure island where silver agrees to have a civil conversation with captain smollett, smollett asks silver to sit down in the sand, silver says "okay but only if you help me up afterwards," then when the conversation is over silver asks for a hand up and smollett refuses and so does everyone else, and jim and the squire and dr livesey just stand there watching in silence as silver crawls across the sand until he reaches a place where he can hoist himself back up to standing, and even then silver's own crew member who had come with him watches silver stumble across the sand and doesn't bother to help him walk until after silver has fallen over "four or five [times]."

think about how in black sails the tavern goes quiet when dufresne starts to speak, and stays quiet throughout silver's retaliation. think about how that scene is a moment of power-- a turning point toward silver embracing the darkness.

think about how in treasure island the camp goes quiet when silver wriggles pathetically across the sand, and stays quiet throughout silver's retreat. think about how that scene is a moment of indignity and hatred and shame-- a turning point toward silver declaring all-out war against jim and the crew of the hispaniola.

think about "my name is john silver, and I've got a long fucking memory."

think about "laugh, by thunder, laugh! before an hour's out, ye'll laugh upon the other side. them that die'll be the lucky ones."
