Hi, I hope this question isn’t weird.
I’m writing a fantasy piece involving romance between a white man and a black man who end up living together and eventually married. Would it be inappropriate for the white man to learn how to help his husband with his hair, specifically with stuff like braiding? He would be learning how from his brother in law. I just think the idea of them playing with and doing each other’s hair was cute but I realize that the white husband may have to learn some things before he is able to reciprocate well. I worry that this may come off as something other than him doing it out of love for his husband (although I don’t know what that would be so that may just be paranoia).
Thank you!
Can my white character braid their black partner’s hair?
Absolutely, they can. A white partner or even friend can definitely braid their Black partner’s hair. There’s a certain amount of cultural sharing that goes into having a close relationship with someone of another background. Common ones I see are the sharing and exchange of food, language, traditions, and at times helping and learning about one’s hair and how they care and style it. And I would expect no less from a white parent that has Black children.
I agree with you that it’s a cute. bonding moment to see. (And if I knew how to braid and style well myself, maybe I'd teach my husband, although sometimes I have him help me wash and detangle..!)

I only find it weird when it’s hyped up like an amazing feat when a white person can do things that BIPOC do on the daily. Appreciation and being impressed at their skillset is fine, but just remember that it doesn’t make them some celebrity [insert the cringe proverbial cookout invite]. It could also just be a discussion and casually happen.

White witch mother, Black werewolf father
@pomegranateeed asked:
Hi! I’m writing a modern fantasy, my main character is a mixed girl, her (white) mom is a witch and her (black) dad is a werewolf. A central point in the story is her accepting that she is a werewolf as well, and I’m worried it may sound insensitive. Due to racial issues in my story (they will be explored and challenged), the mother has to be white, but not all werewolves are black in my world, her dad happens to be black because I designed my main character before the backstory. Should I change her origins? Should I make the dad mixed as well?
“Due to racial issues in my story (they will be explored and challenged), the mother has to be white”
I’d be curious to know what those race issues are that makes a character have to be white. It’s always a chin-scratcher to me, so knowing would help with this answer. Personally, a white werewolf woman and a Black warlock man seems like an interesting dynamic!
Regardless, depicting a Black man as a werewolf has its challenges. Comparing Black men to wild beasts and all. Although werewolves have gotten a sexy mainstream makeover, they still have negative portrayals across so many cultural depictions.
Questions to consider
What origins do your werewolves follow?
How are your werewolves portrayed?
Are they wild beasts feared by society? Driven by “madness” on the full moon, aka dangerous and uncontrollable?
Or are they more like shape shifters who can willingly shift and control themselves?
Shapeshifter vs. “traditional” werewolves
I view shapeshifter wolf depictions differently than werewolves. Although the animal element is still there, there’s a level of the person controlling their shifting abilities vs. being uncontrollably driven by nature. Some sources define a wolf shapeshifter as a different thing entirely. And with a varied cast of shifters from many identities, or a detailed and respectful depiction on why a certain group has the abilities, I personally think shapeshifting wolves are fine. I personally love to read these stories!
Werewolves driven by nature or full moon
If your story leans more towards nature-driven werewolves
Bringing out the humanity in this character is essential. We should get to know the man, minus the animal.
Who is he as a human?
What favorable and unfavorable traits does he possess?
Do any build upon stereotypes?
Avoiding or carefully addressing any traits of rage, violence and anger is essential here, particularly because he already has the werewolf part that may have those associations. To double down and make him the same way as a human really drives in that “animalistic” connection that to me, reads as dehumanizing.
Having the varied cast of werewolves should help, too. As does having a Black man who is not a werewolf at all.  That way, you don’t single out Black men as the animal in the story.

Late 80’s ads for BMW’s 6 series line.
The E24 line of cars was BMW’s first generation of the 6 series Grand Tourer cars. The 635CSi (L6) was produced from 1985-1987 with the Euro-spec of this car making around 215 horsepower. The E24 6 series was also offered with a performance M package which bumped up the horsepower to 256 and included a touring style body kit.
