Thelreads, MHA 273, Replies Part 2

1) “This is seriously fucked up, everything about how this quirk worked was revamped to the point of madness. Shigaraki was already terrifying with the raw power of it, but now- holy fuck, now I`m truly scared.”- Tomura was dangerous on an individual level when he first appeared, but it seemed laughable that his Quirk could be a threat to All Might if the later didn’t have several limiting factors in place to leave him vulnerable to his Bad Touch. Now, with Decay mastered to the point he can devastate a city with it alone, having the poer of AFO backing him up is just complete overkill. Tomura’s Decay is now potent enough he could theoretically stand a chance of killing All Might in his prime with it. 2) “Wait what the fuck- Are those the quirk erasing bullets? Oh jesus fuck I forgot that they even existed for a moment- Well, it was like, only one back then, right? Or aren`t those bullets, are they quirk flasks? Wait, did the doc managed to collect genetic material from Overhaul?”- He managed to duplicate the Bullets from the samples they retrieved from Overhaul- and it was technically Eri’s genetic material that was powering them – which means that, which Garaki’s capture and the machine being broken, those few remaining bullets Tomura’s salvaged are all that’s left of that game-breaking trump card. Dangerous in a long-term prospect, but as it stands, Tomura won’t really have any need of them to get the job done – their main threat was wide-scale distribution to the grunts of the PLF as a means of turning the odds against the more-skilled heroes they’d be contending with. Still, it means that X-Less’s actions weren’t entirely for naught, as he’s left Tomura with a still-limited number of available bullets to use. 3) “YEAH SHIGARAKI, WE NOTICED, BUT WHAT THE FUCK DID YOU SERIOUSLY LET YOUR PHONE CHARGING RIGHT BY YOUR TANK?

WEREN`T YOU INSIDE THAT SHIT FOR MONTHS? SHIGARAKI PLEASE THAT`S GONNA FUCK UP YOUR BATTERY”- Tomura’s rich now thanks to Re-destro’s resources, he can afford to burn through a few phones – and it also indicates that Tomura wanted to waste no time in enacting his ‘purge’ of hero society the second he got out of that tank. He wanted direct access to Machia and his troops from the word go, and that resolute lack of hesitation with getting shit done bodes poorly for everybody… 4) “Yes, but some moron with an X over his crotch ended up messing everything. Now we`ll have to make shit up on the fly.

God, this is gonna be fucked up”- Flying by the seat of our pants and making it up as we go. Time for Izuku’s moment to shine then. 5) “MACHIA GOT HIS SCENT SOME CHAPTERS AGO, I REMEMBER THAT, BUT NOW HE HAS DIRECT ORDERS TO ACT, AND SOMETHING TELLS ME HE`S GONNA TAKE IT REALLY SERIOUSLY

AND THIS IS HOW EVERYTHING SPIRALS OUT OF CONTROL, RIGHT?”- Two unstoppable monsters at either battlefield, and neither combatants facing them seem capable of even slowing them down, let alone defeating them. They call the Secret Weapon a ‘game changer’ for a reason… 6) ““A few moments before hell breaks loose“ you should add, because fuck me those people have no idea that they`re right over Yellowstone before it blows up.”- Nobody expects the secret Kaiju monster hiding in the basement…. 7) “Poor Fat, he ran so much to get here, just to have to run all the way back”- Fatgum will have burned himself back into Fitgum by the end of this from all the exercise. 8) “Alright, so Geten merely managed to throw them off the groove for a moment, but they are already back at it full strength, which is an actual problem, because that means they are getting closer and closer to Machia without knowing he`s up again.

Fuck`s sake”- Genten was just a precursor to the absolute chaos Machia’s going to unleash – and the scariest thing is that the big lug is doing it all unintentionally, just following his orders without specifically caring about any immediate context around him. 10) “Didn`t that dude die-

Dammit Dabi.”- Dabi had something a little different in mind to what his ‘allies’ did when he went off to do his own thing. At the very least, none of them would have been ok with him risking Twice’s life like that, even to further his own goals. As Ironic as it is, Dabi’s efficiency makes him a boon to the League in spite of his absolutely horrible team player mentality. 12) “OH GOD SO IT IS HER DOWN THERE

With Jin killed like that, she’s in no mood to play nice anymore. 13) “OH GOD THE GROUND IS CRACKING, HE`S COMING

Re: overall tumblr top 10: I think it’s funny that my throwaway moodboards are often some of the most popular content on my blog. Things I’m just like ‘ooh I gotta make this’ are mixed in with requests, I think that’s interesting! Ms. Frizzle just blowing away the competition, that’s amazing and I love it. Nothing is even close to how popular she is, and she deserves it. Jack Skellington coming onto the list twice? Come through king, I would love to write a full fic in Halloweentown sometime.

Generally, the more ‘alternative’ characters seem to get a lot more attention on my blog: The Pumpkin King, Morticia, Wybie, Sundrop and Moondrop... Tiana and Naveen really snuck up there though!

Moving onto the more direct fic comparison:

....well this made me realize that I never published my Sanders Sides fics from this blog on AO3, whoops

Setting that aside, fics with angst and plot tend to do better on AO3, while fluffy stories do better on tumblr: Sugary Sweet doesn’t even hit my top 10 on AO3 and it’s one of the fluffiest fics I’ve ever written, coming in at #5 on the tumblr list

On the other hand, Only Heaven I’ll Be Sent To is by far one of my best performing fics on AO3, but comes in at number 6 (tied with another fic) on tumblr, probably because it features a lot of action and gore alongside the fluffy agere elements, same for Restrained showing up on the AO3 top but not tumblr’s.

My Harry Potter fics do way better on tumblr, which is interesting? Maybe Harry Potter fans are still reading their fics on independent forums? Or Harry Potter folks on AO3 don’t cross over much with the agere crowd. (Or maybe they’re just overloaded with /reader fics) I haven’t been actually into the HP community since around 2011 so I’m not sure what’s up there.

Big shoutout to Class Outing for dominating the top of both lists: BNHA is such a big fandom that it makes sense, and I wrote that fic on @agere-fandom-time, which I think got more interaction than this blog: it seems like people are more comfortable interacting with a group-run blog, rather than an individual writer. Or maybe that’s a natural consequence of more writers putting out more consistent content, letting the blog get bigger. I’m not sure! Either way, even if I’m not into BNHA anymore, I feel like it’s a good piece of my writing, so I’m happy for it to be my top spot.

I am so tired of people missing the point so let's talk about a specific take I keep hearing in reference to Rei and Endeavor

So the specific take is that if Endeavor had just gone about his goal differently not only would he have succeeded, but he would have done so ethically

If he and Rei were just a team instead of just a Hero and A Mother; if he played up the family image and Rei doubled as a wife and a sort of pr manager, and how that family image would have boosted his ratings(one person even said "if Rei had a backbone" and to that person: go fuck yourself, that's not how domestic abuse works you uncompassionate fuck)

However while this may fix the domestic abuse part if the relationship, it still misses the point. Endeavor did not come into this marriage with the intent to beat his wife and child, he did not intend to neglect his children from the get-go. That is something he did as a means to an end. Saying he did so by accident would obviously be a lie, but he did not wake up one day and decide "Abuse Is Okay, Actually". The manga makes it clear this is more of a spiral; he came into this marriage with a goal: produce and raise a heir, he got worse and worse over time.

The reason I'm highlighting the spiral here is because the narrative point is that Endeavor's goals were wrong. His intent is flawed. His reason for starting a family is inherently unethical, and his single minded focus of a selfish goal is what produced the consequences. He did not have a family because he felt he was ready to have children with the woman he loves, just for the sake of that family and those children. Their happiness and wellbeing was secondary to his goal.

Having a equal relationship with his wife isn't fixing all the problems; so long as he has kids for the purpose of a legacy, to give them some sort of pre-determined goal he is wrong. As long as he has kids for the sake of his career he is Wrong.

(That's not to say that people who have kids for the joy if it, or out if love for family can't be abusers, just that Enji was wrong from the get go)

Furthermore, this also fucks with the major themes of bnha. The Todoroki family is pretty symbolic of and involved in all the major themes and messages of the show.

The major message is that society creates it's own problems; that the false dichotomy of heroes verse villains is inherently flawed and a self fulfilling system. Society gives people roles based on their quirks; those with flashy quirks are given privilege and encouraged to be heroes whether that want to or not, people with unappealing or "scary" quirks(or just mutant quirks) are harassed and called villians, limiting that persons options and making it difficult to be anything but what society tells them they are, weak quirked or quirkless people either have to work extra hard to be a hero, or are denied anything but ridicule and forced mediocrity. There's other things taht intersect with this, like class, family heritage, or queerness(seen through Magne).

Societies often play a game of sacrifice; what are you willing to sacrifice? Who are you willing to sacrifice? What is the cost you are willing to pay(or let someone else pay) in order to sustain the current social order? In my hero the sacrifice comes in the form of the underprivileged, and children's lives. This society is forced to contend with taht fact, and the consequence of the war arc and the resolution of this arc will answer that question, but so far the answer seems to be that, no, this is not something tehy can sacrifice. Systems made in blood to maintain a hierarchy are unsustainable.

This hierarchy is exemplified by the hero ranking system. If you think about this system of more than a moment it becomes clear that it's pointless and harmful. The most effective form of hero-ing would involve cooperation, transparency, and community outreach, and the ranking undermines all of that. When teams start being formed post-culture festival it's inspite of the system.

You get higher ranking (more money/notoriety/fame) by a) arrest numbers and b) popular vote. This creates a system where heroes are competing and trying to arrest as many people as possible, which makes teamwork difficult and can produce carelessness and property damage. Also, they are incentivized to preform more-so than do their jobs. This means focusing on high-traffic areas, wealthy areas, appeal to people more likely to vote, and preform for the camera. The focus isn't inherently on saving lives, it's on preforming. Working with criminals, minimizing crime, and actually making things safer is actively discouraged in this system because of the way it's made. There can't be heroes without villians, so they have to keep the villains around because this is a profitable industry. And it doesn't even have to be real villains! Most people aren't committing mass murder! Why do you thing the first scene in the show shows a man who stole a purse being called a villain, with the heroes(specifically Mt. Lady) escalating the situation and preforming for the camera? Mha isn't subtle in it's themeing.

And the public doesn't realize these things because of propaganda and "they're a hero! Of course they're saving lives, that's their job!" The public is both being deceived and acting as an active and passive participant in upholding this system.

So, what does this have to do with the Todoroki family?

Well, for one Endeavor serves as an example that being a hero does not equal being a good person. He also shows the flaw of the system in how notoriety and competition has unhealthy and damaging results.

One important thing to acknowledge is that society is currently answering what is a cost they're willing to pay? Well, they've decided taht the Todoroki family is an appropriate price. Sure, he's faced backlash because one of his sons is a Mass Murderer, and some people are, in fact, not chill with domestic violence. But. They need him for the war effort, so h doesn't face consequences. Not significant ones, anyways. Because he's never cared what they thing, he's never tried to but on a PR friendly mask. Their word's font hurt him. He has interpersonal consequences, but that's it. They've decided the perceived protection Endeavor the hero gives them is more important than justice for the harm Endeavor the father has done.

TLDR: The Todoroki family has thematic importance, and saying if Endeavor respected his wife everything would be fine is missing an important fundamental message that his intentions in starting a family were flawed. Disregarding the messages in the story and how they intersect with the Todoroki family is also harmful.

My #1 post of 2022

I'm thinking about how badly the Percy Jackson universe is begging for change, yet stubbornly refuses to do so.

Think about it. The demigods are stuck in an endless loop they did not ask for; monsters that can never be truly killed because they just respawn, suffering grudges born thousands of years before their time, wars of rebellion begging to be won. The universe is in a cycle. The primordial gods made it all, the Titans over threw their oppressive father, the Gods doing the same to theirs. But then it just... Stopped. There was no next generation of slightly-more-righteous rulers. The God's have ruled for a millennial, yet they remain. The world has undeniably moved on; a bronze age, an agricultural revolution, an industrial revolution, a technological revolution- by all logic, they've vastly outstayed their welcome. They retain old traditions no one quite remembers the purpose of and they've been abandoned by a vast majority of the populace. The Roman gods should have replaced them in an epic battle of the ages, but they didn't. They evolved and merged until they struggled to differentiate themselves and avoid identity crisis.

The demigods are born for this age. They understand the world- what it needs, how it works- in a way the Gods do not and Cannot. They can become known to the public(Percy is internationally famous in tlt, Piper, Jason, and Thalia have famous parents) they have compassion where the gods have become out of touch with the mere concept. They're angry and abused, like Zeus and his father before him.

But it doesn't change. The gods make up rules and quest, have convinced these kids that 'this is life and you're lucky to have made it this far, so thank us'. The ones that want change have gone about it wrong. They brought in Kronos and Gaea, monarchs of forgotten ages; those deities got their time, and were duly replaced. To reinstate them would be to replay an era long since past, and no longer needed. They are not the fated revolution; history repeats, but it does not rewind.

The Titans and Giants were not the answer, but a revolution must be had. Before the line is tarnished anymore, something has to give. The halfbloods have been beaten and broken, they use weapons of old, replay old grudges, and in their old Greek/Roman attire and training they stick out in the modern age; they've been held back while the world evolved.

So something needs to be changed, and it needs to be them. They need to be the ones to instate a new rule, before the universe is messed up any further. Fate is screaming out to them with increasingly peril threats of old, with large powers at play that refuse to lend a hand. These kids do so much for their parents, but the gods just keep biting the hand that feeds them. It's time they bite back.

They wouldn't even be hopeless; it fits with the history(the Gods were greatly outnumbered, and the Titans had to fight the sky itself). They are increasingly strong and have defeated gods already. They beat Time and Earth. The gods rely on them: they do their dirty work, they keep them alive and powerful through prayer, they protect them. As much as their parents refuse to admit it, they would be dead without their children. They could fight, and they could win.

The world is begging for change, so change it.

About when Dabi got Twice’s blood:

I think this is the moment (after Twice is killed and Hawks has escaped) when Dabi realized how strongly Toga felt about Twice, realized the possible implications and ran back to get his blood.

We know that he went back at least to grab Skeptic, so he could have got the blood on the same occasion.

I don’t think he gave it to her right away then, either because he was too focused on preparing the reveal and saw Toga as unstable.

1) “Anywho, so it`s the main series` moment, right? Last chapter we had the End rising, and the world started to crumble under his power. Things are about to get fucked up, so let`s get started with Chapter 273: The Thrill of Destruction.”- The thrill ride has begun. Keep your arms and legs inside the vehicle at all times when in motion…or don’t. It won’t change the outcome…

2) “Alright, right where we left, with Midoriya kicking death away from them. Honestly, Uraraka is gonna save most of their asses, her quirk is the only thing separating most of the people here from absolute death.”-To be fair to him, Midoira hasn’t yet had time to process what is onrushing towards him and the civilians, just that it’s causing chaos and is an imminent danger, so he’s going with a massive ‘push’ to try and maybe get some breathing room from a safe distance….what little remains of it.

3) “Like jesus, look at this shit, it`s like an explosion shockwave, this is absurdly faster than before.

God, this is gonna be really hard to deal with.”- A fair bit of that damage is actually Midoria’s attack, showing how much he’s improved with his full cowling mode. 45% is enough to cause a significant street-wide air blast and would have probably blown back most villains or obstacles Midoria has faced up to this point, showing that he’s not at the level where he’s basically the main powerhouse of 1A even with slightly under half his full strength. And given that Decay works through touch, blowing away the crumbling parts might have been effective in causing a bigger gap and limiting the danger from the ‘infected’ rubble. However, even more dangerous than decay’s spreading is its speed, and now it’s simply too fast for Midoira’s best effort to overcome it.

4) “The kick did nothing, the decay continues it`s way forward.

Uraraka, I think your time has come… Show them who`s the boos here.”- Unfortunately, even if she’s improved the number of things she can float, Uraraka’s ‘weight limit’ of floatable matter means that she simply can’t levitate everybody to safety. She can only protect those around her if she’s fast enough, and it’s unknown how long she could keep them all aloft for – after all, it’s never really made clear when the decayed rubble becomes ‘safe’ to touch again, so using her Quirk to lower the weight of large carriers her fellow classmates can then drag to safety is the best use Uraraka can get out of her power right now. 5) “Midoriya, staring at the oncoming death will not do anything to deter it, please run away. As far as they’re aware, this is just a massive rescue operation from a potential danger zone whilst the pros risk their lives in a far away location. They have no idea about Garaki or the Nomu projects he’s got cooking in the hospital basement, and if the operation had gone off without a hitch, they’ve never even have seen a Nomu in action. But now the pinnacle of them all has arisen, and there’s no more safety barriers between the kids and the harsh reality of the all-consuming destruction he embodies.

Alright, no, there was definitely an upgrade here, not only on the speed of Decay, but certainly on the finer control of it

Decay left a perfect area around him, and the depth which the quirk affected the ground is consistent as well. Holy shit, I wasn`t expecting him to be able to actually control how much and how far he wanted to decay things”- Shigaraki’s gained full control over his ability to destroy, as opposed to when it first awakened, allowing him to not only exclude targets caught in the spread if he wants to, but ramping up the speed and potency of its effect. The fact it seems so uncontrollable here isn’t because it’s like an unleashed tsunami of destructive power, it’s because Tomura’s hatred, which shapes and controls his power, has been fully mastered, and he hates everything about the world, allowing that hatred to be channelled/transformed into an expression of pure destructive rejection for everything in the hero society that rejected him in turn. Decay is now more or less a direct extension of Tomura’s will, and this serene centre of the chaotic destruction is what he most desires above all else, for he feels at peace there. @thelreads
