Yes, Shigaraki and Dabi are friends. And Tenko is a hero.

Originally, this moment in Ch.344 was a bit confusing. AFO!Shig seems to touch the ground but before he can activate Decay, he senses Dabi about to rush by and pauses. We know it’s Shigaraki in control here because we see Shig’s right eye and he uses the name “Dabi” instead of AFO’s preferred “Toya.”

Now in Ch.361, we see Tenko assert himself from beneath AFO’s distortions to tell Mirio he does have friends “worth keeping around.” This startles AFO, and he wonders where this voice is coming from now that Shig’s body is perfected and under his control. When AFO thinks about Tenko as the piece that’s not yet melded, AFO flashes back to this “Dabi” moment.

The only reason AFO would think of this moment and connect it with Tenko is if Tenko was in control then too. AFO must have noticed at the time that something went wrong. AFO!Shig was supposed to activate Decay and steal OFA, but Tenko called it off because Dabi ran wild. We know AFO stopped giving a damn about Toya’s life after Toya proved useless to him. But Tenko cared. He refused to let AFO destroy his friend, and in doing so, became a hero.

It’s a fun comparison to this scene from the Overhaul fight, where Overhaul is taunting Mirio about being a hero while undoing his destruction of the room. Meanwhile, quirkless Mirio thought of his friends and mentor to stay strong, protecting the little girl until backup arrived. (After this scene, Izuku, Aizawa, and Nighteye arrive, and Overhaul kills his “friend” so he can fuse their bodies together.)

It makes sense it is in his head. I’ve found the drawing a little eerie since touya since to be off proportioned instead of his usual self Dabi. His face seems too round and much younger, I’d expect a more mature face as you can found in many fan arts. But touya still sees himself like that kid at Sekoto , so this being his imaginary or even the whole family imaginary of a 13 years old touya as in a touya who is healthy physically makes sense.

However I can’t wait for Shoto to make his enter like a ram and headbutt in touya that he is also part of the family!

I love seriousness and drama , so a hug would be lovely, but at the same time I can’t avoid imagining whether Shoto might do something a little comical and anticlimactic - some sort of pestering like real siblings really do sometimes.

I have no doubt it's gonna be suitably dorky - funny. The Shouto-Touya encounters always have these off-the-charts annoying sibling energy:

I can't. The smile on Toga's face when Jin saved her and the shock and the pain when she realized what was happening. The way Compress stops completely, freezes. The way Jin dies smiling.

Genuinely, fuck everyone who says the League of Villains is not a friend group/family.

They might not be the healthiest one, might be complicated, but there was love and friendship and grief and pain. There was happiness too, a sort they didn't think they could experience again. Loyalty and company, joy and comprehension. Anger amd hurt, there was life. They were alive.

Dead by society, but alive together.

1) Shouto is the only being in the entire planet that can't be hurt by Touya, thanks to his new powers.

2) Not only that, but he's the only one capable of enduring his flames AND applying his quirk as a countermeasure to make sure Touya won't hurt himself too.

That means Dabi will never be too much for his little brother. There's nothing Dabi could throw at Shouto that Shouto couldn't stand. It is, Dabi found someone able to support him through the good and the bad without hurting himself or the other.

Think about that for a minute.

Friendly reminder that both Tenko and Touya fought back even after losing everything.

Tenko walked for days, alone and covered in blood through the streets, before AFO found him. He was beaten up and ignored, mostly because he looked scary, even if he was just a child.

Touya ran away after three years of being in coma. He rejected the idea of having a better body and made his way home, even with how weak he was. And then he found the same abuse, even worst if anything, happening in a room beside his altar.

Tenko and Touya were both full of regret. They never wanted to hurt their families. They didn't want to end up like that. They loved their families, their siblings and parents. They wanted to be good, they wanted to be enough.

And when Tenko tried to reach Kotaro to get protected, Kotaro hit him in the face.

And when Touya tried to ask his father for a day off to be with him, Enji only told him he was too busy.

And when they tried to get help, they realized society was rotten. No one wanted to help, there was only the cycle of violence. They were merely victims, more victims, two victims. And they were dead and gone, for society. Two little kids lost in a sea because it happens, sometimes heroes can't save them, it doesn't matter if normal people could have helped them a lot, because normal people doesn't have to help each other, that's for pro-heroes, right?

Now please remember Dabi's reaction to seeing how Toga's parents cleaned up her entire room, erasing her existence, before leaving the house. How there were writings everywhere remembering her how bad she was, how little she was worth, how much she deserved everything she was going through.

Please remember how he burned down that house and immediately went to her, to remind her that he did care, that Twice cared, that the League cared. And please remember that in that moment, she called him Touya and told him he was in fact very kind.

hi! you obviously have a good understanding of kanji, so I was wondering if you knew what kanji dabi uses to refer to his parents? what does he use to refer to endeavor when he’s calling him “father”, basically. thanks ily!!!!!

Hold on—I don’t want anyone to misunderstand. I don’t read kanji. I am learning Japanese at my own pace—but oh my lord I’m still a beginner.

If there is ever a translation question (and I have gotten a few 🫠) I always cite @todomitoukei ‘s posts (and credit her of course). She isn’t participating in bnha fandom atm, she’s on a break.

BUT I can cite her posts to answer your question:

Sooo there you have it!

He still uses the pretty standard word for father. It didn’t change from childhood.
