BnHA Ch. 371 leak reactions:
Koda looks badass, which is something I never though I’d say. Also, his quirk evolution is amazing!
SO happy Horikoshi focused on Shoji’s humanity and the personal impact that discrimination had on him rather than on society at large.
And Hori captured it with nuance too — Shoji clearly suffered but he also learned to shift his focus to the things that make him happy (which coincidentally are also the selfless things that help others). It’s a very Buddhist perspective.
Similarly, Shoji has his eye on the next generation already. Big problems can’t be fixed by one person, one class, or even one generation. Long term, consistent, collective effort is the key.
Shoji rescuing a girl from DROWNING, you say?? Reaching out a hand to a child in a river??? Wow, that sure hits on some themes.
Shoji’s backstory also gives more insight to what he told Izuku during the retrieval of “Dark Deku.” After what Shoji has survived, he doesn’t want to be seen as a victim, he wants to be seen as a hero:
1A cuddle puddle is PERFECT. More please.
Mineta DID call Shoji an octopus after Sero did, but then Mineta called Shoji sexy. Just to clarify :)
Shoji’s speech to Spinner sounds a LOT like what Shoto said to Toya exactly 20 chapters ago! “We know what it feels like to be hurt” = “Dad was a madman! Our family was screwed up” and “Yep, that’s me” = “You’re not wrong about me.” It’s a formula we keep seeing from the heroes in this final arc: Validate the villains as much as possible, and accept their insults with objectivity and grace.

Shoto making his own and specific move called “phosphorus” to use on both him and Touya made me realize something
Touya has never worked on any for himself, he’s just been clinging onto and learning his dads moves this whole time, those abilities were only meant for Endeavor, no wonder Touya’s body could never fully handle them, we have no idea what Touya working with his quirk rather than against it would look like

Shouto is saying, "Have your foolish little brother tell you. Dad is insane. Our home is no good. But burning people is your choice" according to @todomitoukei. Look at how Shouto's eyes are drawn in this panel: narrowed, angry. That's not the Shouto who has been working on processing his trauma - that's Earlyroki, who also burned not only others but himself because he was blinded by his hatred and trauma.
So, we're seeing the beginnings of Shouto trying to relate to Touya! Shouto is starting to say, "hey, you don't have to do this to yourself, to us! I know because I was the same way... I know you're acting like this because you're hurt, but you are not your trauma! What our dad did to us was awful but we can choose to be different from him!" This is basically what Rei told him when she said he was allowed to be a hero because he's not his father. Trauma, your blood, is what happened to you - but it doesn't have to define you!

Watched lilo & stitch and i was hit with a sad bnha hc idea:
Shouto visits Touya at the hospital after their fight. The elder Todoroki has been in a coma ever since but according to the doctors he may still hear what's going on, definitely is in agonizing pain. Shouto holds his hand which is corpse-like cold and gently strokes his fluffy white hair.
"Despite everything i'm still your little brother. We're family" he whispers, praying that Touya can hear him. "Family means we'll always be together. Me. You. Fuyumi. Natsuo... even Mom"
By now he can't keep the tears at bay anymore. They flow freely down his cheeks and a sob threatens to rip from his chest.
"But if it's too much pain, if you really want to go you can"
Shouto's hold tightens so much that his knuchles turn white. "I won't forget you. I promise. I won't let anyone forget"
He feels Touya squeeze his hand back and after a few seconds the heart monitor starts blaring. The line falls flat and Todoroki Touya can finally rest in peace.

You know it would be both ironic and symbolic if Hawks gonna be the one that gives Toga blood. Cause bird was the first creature from whom Toga get blood to drink👀...
Yeah. Plus we have Toga’s dream which many people thought was foreshadowing Hawks killing Toga.

I hated this chapter but one thing I have to appreciate is how clearly we've been shown that Dabi has never taken any of his previous fights seriously. Like. Not even marginally. Even when he was up against people he despised and fully intented to kill (Geten, Hawks), he put in a fraction of the effort he's showcasing now.
We all had just assumed that he skipped out on fights and put the bare minimum effort into his kills because he was watching his limits... But he said himself that his numbness to pain removed the obstacle of caution early on.
Of course, his... low effort makes sense when you consider that he was saving up all the aces up his sleeve (his dad's moves times 20, his surprising speed) for Endvr, to finally beat him at his own game.
He's been training for this for years. Over a decade, in fact, of we count from the time he was discarded. And it shows. He mastered techniques that Endvr honed at the peak of his career. Which means. You know what that means. Dabi's physical prowess and quirk control are on par with a top ranked hero's.
So...
1. Even when he regaled Shouto with that cremation-hug, that was barely an attempt on the kid's life at all. The fact that he stopped the second Enji passed out already made it clear his real intent there was to have Enji's undivided attention. But in hindsight, it's an even more obvious tell. He could've suplexed his brother into the center of the Earth but he... Didn't
2. Even when Dabi harbored animosity towards an opponent that looked down on him or overlooked him (Dabi's major Achilles heels), the killing intent he reacts with never came close to the overwhelming, all-consuming rage he feels for what his father has done to him.
In other words... As it turns out, Dabi's an incredibly skilled fighter (perhaps the most versatile in the League), but the only person he actually cares to fight seriously is his dad. No one else is on his radar on quite the same level. Not even Shouto.
Another thing that came from this chapter is that Dabi doesn't really project his daddy issues onto everyone he dislikes the way, say, Tomura does; he doesn't kill because he gets so emotional that his feelings get the best of him. No. Dabi's much more detatched and calculating. When he wants to kill, it's always a deliberate choice. When he attacks, he's not in a murderous frenzy, but he always carefully plans out how much force he needs to use, how best to overwhelm his opponent.
Sometimes it's still a reaction to stress, don't get me wrong. Dabi's just as emotional as Shigaraki, though he does keep his feelings under a dozen of locks. For example, when Twice gets killed, Dabi strikes with fury because he's upset (though in denial about it). My point is that even his feelings seemigly get the best of him, Dabi's still a rational thinker. He bides his time before his first burst of flames to catch Hawks at his most unaware; he talks to distract Tokoyami from his need to cool down for a bit; he reads right through the kid's plan to flee, and saves his last strength to give chase; when Toko flies, Dabi jet packs after him, catching up.
All this time, we all thought Dabi was an emotional fighter. You pushed his buttons and he reacted. But as it turns out, that's quite a simplification. Tomura's the emotional one; Dabi's more of a planner. (which, by the way, reflects in their long term goals. Tomura's is abstract, hardly defined. He wants to destroy everything, but he doesn't bother figuring out how in advance. He tackles challenges one by one as they present themselves to him, not unlike a video game progression. Dabi's different. He's a strategist and an overthinker. He spent the better part of ten years honing the details of how he wanted to ruin Endvr).
Even now that he seems to have gone full throttle and he looks totally unhinged, striking Shouto with a fury he never before showed to the kid, he's still just as calculating as ever. He observed Shouto for years, gleaning his brother's fighting style enough for him to predict Shouto's moves now and smoothly counteract them before they can land. He's not so caught in his own head or clouded by his resentment that he cannot analyze the battle. When Shouto neutralizes the heat, Dabi's paying close attention and commenting on it.
I want to emphasize that this is the most emotional we've ever seen him, yet there's a certain cool-headedness to him. Even as a yells at the kid and tries to sautée him, Dabi's approaching this fight with some crazy fine-tuned control.
And that's what I find most interesting about 351.
Dabi doesn't just fight with the skill and the firepower of a pro. He fights with the battle sense and detached control of one, too.
And he's absolutely right. He does know his body best, and his father was a fool to cast him aside before he could get a chance to show those skills. If Dabi managed to get to this level on his own, with the then-number-two-hero's support he could've gone places.
But in a sense, I do think that's his strongest suit. At some point, perhaps, he'll realize that he doesn't need his father's stamp of approval to be this good. It was never a matter of being "worthy" of existing. It was always believing you had the right to be, and conquering, owning it even when literally everyone else gave up on you. And Dabi did it. He believed he had the skills to reach this point, and boy did he reach it
