BNHA Observations, speculations and assorted info: Todoroki Mansion (Part 4: Dining Room)
So, in order to write my fic, I spend much time observing canon scenes, comparing the manga and the anime version, take note of details, translations and info in them as well as finding out how are some things called.
Since what I noticed/speculated/found out can be of use for other fic authors I thought to share as well.
Resources:
Chap. 192 “The Todoroki Family” (轟家 Todoroki-ke) Chap. 249 “The Hellish Todoroki Family” (地獄の轟くん家 Jigoku no Todoroki-kun-chi) Chap. 250 “Ending” (エンディング)
Ep. 90 “Vestiges” (面影 Omokage) Ep. 105 “The Hellish Todoroki Family” (地獄の轟くん家 Jigoku no Todoroki-kun-chi) Ep. 106 “The Unforgiven” (許されざる者 Yurusarezaru-mono)
OBSERVATIONS, SPECULATIONS AND ASSORTED INFO:
The dining in the Todoroki Mansion is a washitsu (和室), which means "harmony room" but which is the name used to mean "Japanese-style room".
Tumblr media
It's a room characterized by a tatami flooring (Tatami (畳) is a type of mat used as a flooring material in traditional Japanese-style rooms)...
Tumblr media
and sliding doors, be they Shōji (consisting of translucent or transparent sheets on a lattice frame) or Fusuma (vertical rectangular panels often painted)...
Tumblr media
....and, if the particular room is also meant to serve as a reception room for guests, it may have a tokonoma (床の間), an alcove for decorative items.
Tumblr media
HOW ONE REACHES IT?
In the manga from the Genkan, taking the corridor on the left, though we aren't shown more about how to reach it...
Tumblr media
In the anime it's possible to speculate it's reached always taking the corridor on the left but then we're shown you've to walk through the engawa...
Tumblr media
We know that in the anime the Shōji door with a lower door panel of the room doesn't open on the open part of the Engawa because, outside of the door, we always see a closed corridor.
Tumblr media
Natsuo takes the way on the right and then curves again on the right and then we'll see he has reached the engawa so we can assume that's the way one has to take to reach it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's a little harder to say if the same applies to the manga as what's behind the characters entering in the room is left white... but since the wall isn't drawn it's possible the room opens on the outside...
Tumblr media
...but let's look at how the dining room is in details.
THE DOOR AND THE WINDOWS
As said before it's a large Shōji door with a lower door panel and some small Shōji windows above it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In addition to the two small windows on top of the door, we've a marumado (円窓), a circular window with a flat bottom edge, on the left.
Tumblr media
Outside the Marumado there's another corridor, which is probably not the engawa as we don't see it having round windows. By the way, that corridor lead to the Butsudan room, though it's evidently in opposite places in the anime and in the manga as Enji is walking in opposite directions to reach it.
On the wall opposite to the door, on the left, there's a Shōji window the Shoin (書院) with, below it, a power point.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Shoin (書院) is considered a decorative window-style structure which is usually located to the left of the Tokonoma in formal ones (since the Todoroki one is collocated to the right I guess their own isn't formal). A Shoin with an overhang toward the porch area is called “Tsuke-shoin” (付書院), and those without an overhang are called “Hira-shoin” (平書院).
SIZE OF THE ROOM
In the anime is clearly of 12 tatami mats.
In the manga is harder to say but maybe it's 10 tatami mats?
WALL IN FRONT OF THE DOOR
As shown in the images above and as said before, on the wall in front of the door there's a Shōji window, then an alcove, which I'm not sure could costitute a Tokonoma as what's displayed in it is a television.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The anime also adds, hung on the wall on the side opposite to the window, a picture.
Tumblr media
WALL ON THE RIGHT
As said before and as shown in the images before, on the wall on the left there's only the marumado window.
WALL ON THE LEFT
The wall on the left is the one of the Tokonoma. A formal Tokonoma structure is called Hondoko (本床) and consists of the following three parts: the Shoin (書院), a decorative window, the Tokonoma (床の間), an alcove and the Tokowaki (床脇), a space with shelves.
Tumblr media
In the manga we've already seen that the tokonoma structure isn't a formal one as the Shoin window is placed in the opposite side. Let's focus now on the Tokonoma, which contains a kakemono (掛物 "hanging thing"), more commonly referred to as a kakejiku (掛軸 "hung scroll"), and a vase on the right. We can also catch a glimpse of a flower arrangement which should be in front of the scroll.
Tumblr media
As for the Tokowaki, instead than an upper and lower cupboard with, in the middle some shelves, we've what seems to be a closet with a lower cupboard.
The anime instead went for a traditional Tokowaki.
Tumblr media
It has in the middle a Chigaidana (違い棚) which is decorative shelves consisting of two different levels and two cupboard-like shelves with sliding doors placed above and below the Chigaidana, which are called Tenbukuro (天袋 "top shelf") and Jibukuro (地袋 "bottom shelf").
CEILING
The ceiling is a Japanese Saobuchi tenjō (竿縁天井 "rod edge ceiling") ceiling, a flat wood ceiling supported by narrow wood beams.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
ON WHAT DO THEY SIT?
In the anime they're always sitting on Zaisu (座椅子) chairs, Japanese chairs with a back and no legs.
Tumblr media
In the manga, when Enji comes home after beating a Nomu and when he dreams his family eating together they're all sitting on Zabuton (座布団) Cushions.
Tumblr media
Only Fuyumi seems to be sitting in a seiza (正座) position (on her heels with her legs tucked underneath her). As she's a female her other option would be to sit with her legs tucked on one side. Males can also sit in a seiza position but the Todoroki males all seem to sit in agura (胡坐) position (cross-legged). Stretching the legs directly out in front of themselves is something one must not do so nobody does it.
The table should be a Zataku (座卓) table, a low, rectangular table suitable for sitting on Zabuton or Zaisu.
Tumblr media
SEATING ARRANGEMENT
Seating arrangements is very important in Japanese culture: The guest-of-honor is seated upon the kamiza (上座 "Chief seat" or "seat of honor") which is typically situated farthest from the entrance. The middle of the table is the most honored position, and the second most important person is seated next, at his right, the third most important person at his left. When there is a tokonoma in the room, the guest-of-honor is seated in front of it. The host or lowest-ranking guest is seated closest to the shimoza (下座 "lower seat").
So let's give a look at how the Todoroki sit...
To make things simpler I made a scheme showing the floorplan of the dining room and the seating arrangement.
Tumblr media
Enji, the family head, is always at the head of the table. I'll assume the first time they put him near the door because otherwise he wouldn't have been able to watch the tv.
The second time in fact, when the tv is not turned on, he's at the chair farther form the door.
The first time Shouto is placed at his right, which is the second most important place. It might be because Shouto is being a guest in a way, as he's temporally living at the dormitory, or it might be because this, in a way, remarks Shouto's status as Enji's heir, despite Shouto being the youngest.
The second time at Enji's right there's Bakugo, which makes sense as he's a guest. Technically the third most important place would be the one at Enji's right, but they've probably left Bakugo, Midoriya and Shouto all seated at the same side of the table so that they would be more comfortable. From what I could understand in theory in such scenario, Enji should have seated opposed to them, between Fuyumi and Natsuo (the middle place is the most important spot in this kind of arrangement), but this is no business dinner so I guess they didn't bother.
So the most important spot after the one Bakugo is having goes to Fuyumi's Enji's eldest child.
Interesting enough, when Enji came home from fighting the Nomu, that spot was given to Natsuo.
What's interesting to notice though is that the Todoroki's dining room comes with a problem.
Guests should be placed facing the Tokonoma but this here doesn't happen. In order to place Bakugo at Enji's right, they give their back to the Tokonoma.
That is unless Enji gives up his place as the head of the table and sits on the middle of the table between Fuyumi and Natsuo.
Now, Enji's dream in the manga.
The manga doesn't give us a way to figure out how the characters are placed in the room but the anime confirms the scene is seen from Enji's point of view as he enters in the room, so Rei and Fuyumi are next to the tv. In this arrangement, there's no spot for him and no head of the table.
In theory the most important person should be Rei, as she's the oldest (and she's placed far from the door)... which makes Shouto the second most important person again with Fuyumi coming third.
The anime added a dream sequence which has Rei seated at the head of the table but this time Natsuo would get the second most important place, then Fuyumi, then Shouto.
On a sidenote there's to say families might chose not to be so strict about seating arrangement and just go with what makes them comfortable so...
Still, to sum it up, manga and anime this time are pretty similar in how to represent the room, the biggest difference being merely how the anime, differently from the manga, decided to go for a traditional Tokowaki.

BNHA Observations, speculations and assorted info: Todoroki Mansion (Part 8: Butsuma room)
So, in order to write my fic, I spend much time observing canon scenes, comparing the manga and the anime version, take note of details, translations and info in them as well as finding out how are some things called.
Since what I noticed/speculated/found out can be of use for other fic authors I thought to share as well.
Resources:
Chap. 249 “The Hellish Todoroki Family” (地獄の轟くん家 Jigoku no Todoroki-kun-chi) Chap. 350 “Bound to a Fiery Fate” (エン En)* Chap. 356 “Regarding the Enemy” (敵について Teki ni Tsuite?)
Ep. 105 “The Hellish Todoroki Family” (地獄の轟くん家 Jigoku no Todoroki-kun-chi)
School Briefs V “Awkward Year’s-End Soba”
-* In Japanese the title is written in Katakana, making impossible to figure out to which Kanji it refers. The reading for ‘en’ belongs to the kanji that can be translated as “flame/fire” (the first kanji in Enji’s name) but also to the one that can be translated as “fate/destiny”, “bond/connection/family ties” and “hatred”. The English translation tried to put all those meaning together into a single sentence.
OBSERVATIONS, SPECULATIONS AND ASSORTED INFO:
For start, what's a Butsuma (仏間)?
It's the name of a room whose principal or exclusive function is containing a Butsudan.
Okay so what's a Butsudan?
Butsudan (仏壇 "Buddhist altar"), is a shrine commonly found in temples and homes which looks either a defined, often ornate platform or simply a wooden cabinet sometimes crafted with doors...
Tumblr media
...that enclose and protect a Gohonzon (御本尊) or religious icon, typically a statue or painting of a Buddha or Bodhisattva, or a calligraphic mandala scroll.
Tumblr media
Its primary use is for paying respects to the Buddha, as well as to family members who have died.
The Butsudan is commonly seen as an essential part in the life of a traditional Japanese family as it is the centre of spiritual faith within the household, especially in dealing with the deaths of family members or reflecting on the lives of ancestors.
Traditional Japanese beliefs hold the Butsudan to be a house of the Buddha, as well as of deceased relatives enshrined within it.
HOW ONE REACHES IT?
We don't really know but it seems to be on the ground floor and both the manga and the anime shows if you try to reach it from the kitchen you'll have to pass through the corridor on which you can see the round Shōji window of the dining room.
Tumblr media
HOW DOES IT LOOKS LIKE?
We see very little of it but from what we can see we can observe some things.
The Butsuma in the Todoroki Mansion is a washitsu (和室), which means “harmony room” but which is the name used to mean “Japanese-style room”.
It’s a room characterized by a tatami flooring (Tatami (畳) is a type of mat used as a flooring material in traditional Japanese-style rooms)…
Tumblr media
and sliding doors, be they Shōji (consisting of translucent or transparent sheets on a lattice frame) or Fusuma (vertical rectangular panels often painted)…
Tumblr media
Specifically, this Washitsu has Shōji doors.
Generally, either the is a small room connected to a bigger one or is the most formal reception room in the house.
In "School Briefs" they refer to it as a side room so it's probably a small room connected to a bigger one.
The Todoroki though, seems to instead have a room specifically for it and they placed it on the right next to the entrance.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Todoroki Butsudan is a large and elegant wooden cabinet crafted with doors.
Its Gohonzon seems to be a painting of a Buddha.
Tumblr media
Enshrined with it there's the memorial photograph or Iei (遺影) of Touya.
The Iei can be either a formal portrait or a snapshot of the deceased but normally the photo chosen is usually one in which the person is looking directly into the camera and if it's part of a larger picture, it is cropped to show only the head and shoulders. The landscape behind the photo is removed and replaced with a grey background. The chosen picture may depict the deceased as they wanted to be remembered, but more often than not depicts that person in a manner that reflects how the living wish to remember them.
We can see that's exactly the case with Touya.
Tumblr media
By the way Touya is wearing a Gakuran (学ラン), which is the uniform for many middle-school and high-school boys in Japan. The colour is normally black, but some schools use navy blue. Touya's Gakuran is the one of his middle school.
The choice though might not be because the Todoroki wanted to remember him as a student but because the Gakuran is considered also a formal wear you can wear at cerimonies.
Anyway as it's Touya's photo that's enshrined there, for the Todoroki it means that the Butsudan is basically Touya's 'house', which is why in "School Briefs" Natsuo goes to the Butsudan and greets his brother and the story defines the room as "Touya's room" or why Enji talks directly with him when being in that room. To the Todoroki Touya is there.
Considering how the doors are different from the ones which were in Touya and Natsuo's room and how it should be at the ground floor the Butsudan very likely hadn't been placed in Touya's room and, probably, was there before Touya's death and, inside it, there was the photo of Enji's father, which is likely the photo that now is hung on the wall, near the Butsudan.
Along with Touya's memorial photograph, there should also be a Memorial tablets or Ihai (位牌) constructed of black lacquered wood.
Tumblr media
I think it's the thing on the right, above Touya's photo.
Tumblr media
The the vertically standing tablet in the Ihai is known as the fuda. The posthumous “precepts name” kaimyō (戒名) of the deceased is engraved in gilded calligraphy on the front of the tablet, with the age and date of death engraved on the back.
A person who has recently died is also referred to as a Hotoke (仏) and the living take care of it through offerings and regular interactions.
Offerings of food, flowers, incense and other things that the deceased might have liked (even beer, sake, whiskey, cigarettes, canned coffee, juice!) are regularly placed on the Butsudan, and candles are lit (though it seems it’s common to offer rice).
We see that Touya's butsudan has flowers and Enji brings him an offering of food, which in the anime seems to be fried chiken.
Tumblr media
Canonically Touya didn't like fish but he might have liked meat, hence Enji offers it to him. In "School Briefs" Natsuo and Shouto will offer incense to him as well.
Eventually, after a number of years (commonly they range from 33 to 50), it is assumed that the Hotoke, no longer remembered by the living, is elevated to the status of tutelary ancestor, Senzo (先祖) and is believed to join the collective spirits of the generations of household ancestors and his photo is removed by the Butsudan.
33 years aren't yet gone by from when Enji's father died, so I don't know if his photo was removed from the Butsudan merely because Touya got the honor spot (the photo of the deceased can also not be enshrined in the Butsudan) or because they decided Enji's father became a Senzo early.
I'll go and assume they just gave Touya the best spot.
Enji's father is, after all, someone only Enji remembers, while Touya's memory is also alive in his siblings.
Next to the Butsudan we see that various objects are placed on a furniture (manga and anime of course not agreeing on the furniture's shape).
Tumblr media
They likely belonged to Touya as objects dear to the deceased are placed near to the Butsudan. The manga has shoes, a toy car, a robot, a ball and plenty of books. Actually a couple of 'books are so tall they might not be books but canvas of paintings... though I can't tell for sure.
The anime keeps the car, the ball, the toy car... and I'll go and assume the blocks are meant to be books though I'm not sure. Still they're less than the ones in the manga.
From the drawing on the ball we can see it seems to be the same ball Touya and his siblings were playing with when Shouto was observing them.
"School Briefs" though, places that ball forgotten in a shed but hey, maybe the Todoroki kids had more balls (it can be each of them had one).
And well, that's all we know about the Butsuma.

School Briefs III "Dramatic Makeover!" School Briefs V "Awkward Year's-End Soba"
OBSERVATIONS, SPECULATIONS AND ASSORTED INFO:
Through the story we don't really get to see all the bedrooms in the house, we only see the room in which baby Fuyumi and toddler Touya slept, the one in which Natsuo and Touya slept and the one in which Shouto (baby and child) slept, as well as the room Shouto had in U.A. dormitories which is said to have furnitures that match the ones he had in his room.
Due to what we see we can draw up some common point and then analyze differences as well.
The bedrooms in the Todoroki Mansion are washitsu (和室), which means "harmony room" but which is the name used to mean "Japanese-style room".
Tumblr media
....and, if the particular room is also meant to serve as a bedroom it can have an Oshiire (押入れ), a built-in space where bedding items (futon mattress and pillows, etc.) but sometimes also clothes or item people do not usually use are stored.
Tumblr media
I'll spoil you a bit and tell you the Todoroki are always shown sleeping not in cribs or western beds but in Futon (布団), a traditional Japanese style of bedding...
Tumblr media
...whose complete set consists of a Shikibuton (敷き布団 "spreading futon") mattress...
Tumblr media
...and a Kakebuton (掛け布団 "covering futon") duvet.
Tumblr media
The pillows used are Makura (まくら) pillows, which are generally firmer than western pillows.
Tumblr media
HOW ONE REACHES THEM?
The bedrooms we're shown seem to be not on the ground floor but on the first floor. We aren't shown where the stairs are so it's hard to say which way one has to take to reach them, but the visual seems to imply they can be reached by the engawa on the first floor since that's what's shown to us after showing us Touya and Natsuo's bedroom... and the place from where Shouto watches his siblings.
Since when Enji reaches Shouto while the latter is watching his siblings from it and, planning to bring him to the training room, he leads him in the direction opposite to where the entrance is, it's likely there should be stairs to get on the ground floor in that direction, though it's possible there are more in the opposite as well.
THE FIRST FLOOR ENGAWA
So I've been told the corridor above the engawa at the ground floor also qualifies as engawa (縁側/掾側) or en (縁) since it's also an edging strip of non-tatami-matted flooring, usually wood or bamboo which run around the rooms, on the outside of the building.
Tumblr media
The one we're always shown has a view on the Todoroki garden.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In addition to the wooden railing, it is enclosed by glass (actually, the first time the anime showed it, the glass was missing and Shouto could touch the railing but then they retconned the scene in season 6 and drew it so that Shouto didn't rest his hand on the railing anymore).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Plenty of Shōji doors with a lower door panel open on it, while the floor is in wood.
Does those Shōji doors lead directly to the bedrooms?
It's hard to say, as characters seem to enter in the bedrooms ALWAYS by Fusuma doors and not by Shōji doors and in the "School Briefs" it's said Shouto's bedroom had a Shōji window.
What's more, when we see the inside of Natsuo and Touya's room, in the anime we're shown the one on the opposite side of the door is clearly a Shōji window... while in the manga we can't really see it well but there's furniture in front of it so I doubt it's a door.
Whatever, let's focus on what we see of them.
BABY FUYUMI AND TODDLER TOUYA'S ROOM
We don't really know if this is their bedroom or they're sharing the bedroom with their parents. They were clearly put down for a nap, and left under Enji's supervision, so it would make sense for their Futon only to be out and not for the ones of their parents.
Tumblr media
Contrary to what many fanfics say, they don't sleep in cribs but they have baby Futon.
Tumblr media
So, behind Enji we can see Fusuma doors, which in the manga have same sort of drawing on the lower part while in the anime have a stripe on them.
In the manga those doors could be the door to get inside the room, as well as the door to an Oshiire.
In the anime they seem more like the door to an Oshiire, since we can see a Shōji door with no lower door panel on the left. The anime adds some furniture to carry baby necessities and a pillow with giant plushies. Oddly enough and differently from the manga the floor in the anime doesn't seem to be a tatami one, but it likely is meant to be.
BABY SHOUTO'S ROOM
It's hard to say if it's the same room in the manga, as we can't see well the Fusuma doors. It's clearly not the same room in the anime as the Fusuma doors are different but at least now we can see the tatami mats.
Hard to say if this is meant to be Shouto's room or if Rei is keeping him to sleep in their bedroom and only later Shouto will get his own room, through, same as when Touya and Fuyumi were small, it would make sense for Rei to keep him sleeping in their room as it would be the best way to check on him during the night.
Tumblr media
CHILD SHOUTO'S ROOM
While not a lot is shown, we get a glimpse of child Shouto's bedroom. The manga only shows us the Futon, the anime shows us what we call a Shōji lamp pending on the ceiling.
Tumblr media
"School Briefs 3" confirms that "The Todoroki family house had square, wooden fixtures that hung low from the ceiling. When it was time for bed, one needed only to tug the string dangling a few feet above one’s futon."
It's unclear which furniture the anime put near the bed.
TEENAGER SHOUTO'S ROOM
Sadly we never see it but "School briefs 3" though, due to dealing with Shouto moving to the school dormitory, let us known which furniture were at home in his room.
"The kids were allowed to use their bed, desk, and dresser set furnished by the school or to bring their own furniture, so Todoroki was now looking at the wadansu dresser, fuzukue desk, low zaisu chair, and futon straight from his room at home, as well as a cardboard box containing his clothes and other small necessities."
We'll see the furnitures Shouto brought from his home (I guess they're extra, as when Shouto goes back home his room isn't empty) in the manga and the anime when we're shown his dormitory room so let's look at it as a way to get an idea of how the furniture in Shouto's room are.
Tumblr media
A wadansu (和タンス/和箪笥) dresser is a typical Japanese Tansu (箪笥) chest of drawers/cabinet, like the two we see at the right.
Tumblr media
They come in plenty of shapes. The one of which we catch a glimpse in the right should also be a type of wadansu.
Tumblr media
A Fuzukue (文机) desk is a low desk...
Tumblr media
... Shouto can sit using a Zaisu (座椅子) chair, Japanese chairs with a back and no legs. We see though that the one SHouto uses is slightly taller than the ones that were in the Todoroki dining room.
Tumblr media
We also see he has what we call Shōji lamps.
Tumblr media
Inside they have a light bulb but this kind of lamps, as well as the square, wooden fixtures that hung low from the ceiling the Todoroki have...
Tumblr media
...are based on the Andon (行灯), a paper-covered wooden stand housing an oil lamp. The paper was meant to protected the flame from the wind. Nowadays though, the oil lamps had been replaced with light bulbs but the name remained the same so that what for us is Shōji lamps, for Japanese people is still caleld Andon.
By the way, the ones that are meant to hung from the ceiling (and are large and flat) are called Hachiken Andon (八間行灯) or just Hachiken (八間), while the lamps Shouto has on the floor, which are the most common indoor type, are called Oki Andon (置行灯) and are mostly vertically box-shaped, with a stand for lighting a lamp (or, nowadays, hosting a light bulb) inside and, in the past, used to have a handle on the top for carrying. Some had drawers at the bottom.
Long story short, Shouto's furniture have a very distinct Japanese feeling.
"School briefs" seem to imply Shouto's room has a Shōji window, not a Shōji door...
"…Todoroki’s gaze settled on the window next, and he noticed the curtains provided by the school.
No Shōji window panels either…
Still feeling like something was off, he walked to the window and absentmindedly opened and shut the curtains. He was used to the curtains at school, but never in a room where he slept."
and
"Fine, fine. Your Futon's drying by the window in your room. Why don't you take it down and lay it out?"
TOUYA AND NATSUO'S ROOM
If Shouto's furniture has a distinct Japanese feeling, things change with Touya and Natsuo's room. But let's go with order.
They too have a Fusuma door...
Tumblr media
...and Futon beds...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
...but you can already notice that the lamp is of the western kind, not a Shōji one and the lampadary on the ceiling also seems a round western one.. (though it's really hard to see it well and I might be wrong).
Tumblr media
Still, there's definitely a more western feeling in this room as again, the lamps on the desks are western ones and so are the desks and the chairs.
Tumblr media
There's also a tansu in the background, but it's less similar to the traditional ones which Shouto has.
Considering the desks and the chairs should have been brought when at least Touya was old enough to speak up, it can be they reflect Touya's tastes, which might be less traditional Japanese furniture oriented.
As Fuyumi isn't shown sleeping in the room nor there's a third desk for her (the one next to Touya's is filled with toys that seems to belong to a boy), we can assume she got her own room while Natsuo was left to keep on sleeping with Touya. Hard to say if later, after Touya's death, that room became Natsuo's only or he moved to another room.
At the left, on the wall we don't see, we can speculate there's probably an Oshiire.
As said before in the anime on the opposite wall there's clearly a Shōji window, we can't be so sure in the manga as the Shōji seem to go lower but still there's a furniture placed there so... I don't know.
What we know is it shouldn't be the room to the Butsudan, as that room is meant to be one in which the family communicate with deceased family members and make offerings to them and, likely, existed prior to Touya's death in honour of Enji's deceased father (and, possibly, his mother), never mentioning the room has a Shōji door instead than a Fusuma one.
We also know that none of these rooms is the one in which Enji hit Rei after discovering Touya burned himself again as the furniture in that rooom match with the ones in the tv room.
WHAT ABOUT ENJI AND REI'S BEDROOM AND FUYUMI'S BEDROOM?
They aren't shown but they likely are still at the first floor, still washitsu with Fusuma doors and Shōji windows and they likely sleep in Futon.

So, in order to write my fic, I spend much time observing canon scenes, comparing the manga and the anime version, take note of details, translations and info in them as well as finding out how are some things called.
Since what I noticed/speculated/found out can be of use for other fic authors I thought to share as well.

OBSERVATIONS, SPECULATIONS AND ASSORTED INFO:
The Todoroki family (轟家 ‘Todoroki-ke’) is clearly a rich one due to Todoroki Enji being the Number 2 Hero and solving more cases than anyone in recorded history.
It's composed by 6 people, Todoroki Enji (轟 炎司), the family head, Todoroki Rei (轟冷), née Himura (氷叢 Himura), his wife, his eldest son (長男 'Chōnan'), Todoroki Tōya (轟 燈矢), his eldest daughter (長女 'chōjo'), Todoroki Fuyumi (轟 冬美), his second son (次男 'jinan'), Todoroki Natsuo (轟 夏雄) and his third son (三男 'sannan'), Todoroki Shōto (轟 焦凍).
Below there's a scheme of how the family was before family members started leaving the house as, at this point in the manga, apparently no one lives in it (first Rei was hospitalized, then Touya supposedly 'died', then Shouto moved to U.A. dormitories, then Fuyumi and Natsuo moved to their new house and, even though Enji is supposed to still live there, since he was tailing after Midoriya, the house was basically left empty).
Tumblr media
We know Enji's father died way before his marriage, we have no info about his mother and we know Rei's parents continued to live in the Himura residence, which is clearly a large traditional Japanese house.
Tumblr media
While it's implied in the past the Todoroki family had people working for them to help with the housework and, possibly, with the care of the children, in fact, after Shouto's birth Enji said he would hire helpers/servants (使用人'Shiyōnin') and Natsuo mentioned they used to have a maid (お手伝いさん 'Otetsudai-san') who would cook for them but retired due to back problems (the English version calls her a cook though), we only see in the house someone who's not a Todoroki once, when the children are playing.
It could be a servant supervising them... or it could also be Rei's mother visiting them. We'll never known.
Tumblr media
The Todoroki too live in a huge traditional Japanese house, which the manga calls Todoroki mansion (轟邸 ‘Todoroki-tei’).
Since no one mention the Todoroki family being prestigious for something else that's not the fact Enji is the Number 2 hero, I tend to think the house is one he either built or bought, not the one in which he was raised.
OUTSIDE OF THE MANSION (AERIAL VIEW)
As usual, manga and anime disagree on how the place should be.
The anime gives it an even huger garden and adds what might be two extra storage buildings and a large gate on the left, probably to allow a car in.
The house also seems a single block, where in the manga it seems U shaped, with a garden at the center of the U.
Tumblr media
THE NEIGHBOURHOOD
We see glimpses of the neighbourhood when Aizawa carries Shouto home (he has to park his car outside it)
Tumblr media
...and when Ending pecks at Endeavor's house.
Tumblr media
There seems to be a street that leads straight at the gate since when Natsuo leaves the house he walks straight ahead of himself.
Tumblr media
In an OAV instead we see a glimpse of the street that runs parallel to the gate.
Tumblr media
Anyway it's clearly a residential area.
In Episode 25 we see Shouto walking to reach the hospital. It's unclear if the area he's walking through is near his house or he got distant from it already, but, in case it's near his house, the scenery seems to imply the house is built uphill since Shouto has to walk downhill.
Tumblr media
THE GATE'S ENTRANCE
Manga and anime seem to mostly agree with how it's supposed to be, the only addition being the anime shows also a glimpse of what I assume is the large entrance for a car.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
INSIDE THE GATE
Now yes, there are some differences between the manga and the anime, like the path leading to the house, the small gate near it, the placement of the trees and the Ishi-dōrō (石灯籠 “stone lantern”) near the house is completely missing in the anime.
Credits when it's due it was the anime who first came up with how the Todoroki Residence entrance looked like so, if anything, it was Horikoshi who did the changes... unless he showed them a drawing of how he wanted it before showing it in the manga.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
ENGAWA
An Engawa (縁側/掾側) or En (縁) is an edging strip of non-tatami-matted flooring, usually wood or bamboo. It may run around the rooms, on the outside of the building, and can resemble a porch or sunroom.
Usually, it is outside the translucent paper Shōji, but inside the Amado (雨戸) storm shutters (when they are not packed away). However, sometimes it runs outside the Amado. An Engawa that cannot be enclosed by Amado, or sufficiently sheltered by eaves, must be finished to withstand the Japanese climate. Modern architecture often encloses it with sheet glass.
The Todoroki Engawa is meant to give a view to the inner garden. In the manga the one we always see is the one on the right...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here you can see the ceiling of the Engawa
Tumblr media
This is probably the Engawa from above.
Tumblr media
GARDEN
From the engawa the garden can be seen with what's likely a koi pond and a bridge.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
THE TRAINING HALL (OUTSIDE)
The manga seems to imply that that small building outside the house but still connected to it is the training hall, since its from it that the noise form Enji and Shouto's training comes.
Tumblr media
The anime instead seems to imply this is the training hall from outside.
Tumblr media
Note that in the story when the characters seem to go to the training hall they don't seem to get outside, nor the training hall is shown to have round windows... so yeah, whatever.
ROOF
The anime shows us the corner of the roof. It's not overly important, I'm just showing it so that the whole thing is complete.

BNHA Observations, speculations and assorted info: Todoroki Mansion (Part 2: Genkan)

Ep. 25 “Todoroki vs. Bakugo” (轟VS爆豪 Todoroki vs Bakugō) Ep. 50 “End of the Beginning, Beginning of the End” ( 始まりの終わり 終わりの始まり Hajimari no Owari Owari no Hajimari) Ep. 105 “The Hellish Todoroki Family” (地獄の轟くん家 Jigoku no Todoroki-kun-chi) Ep 106 “The Unforgiven” (許されざる者 Yurusarezaru-mono) Ep 130 “The Wrong Way to Put Out a Fire” (火の不始末 Hi no Fushimatsu)
OBSERVATIONS, SPECULATIONS AND ASSORTED INFO:
What's a Genkan?
To quote Wikipedia: "Genkan (玄関) are traditional Japanese entryway areas for a house, apartment, or building, a combination of a porch and a doormat. It is usually located inside the building directly in front of the door. The primary function of genkan is for the removal of shoes before entering the main part of the house or building."
Tumblr media
Genkan has always two levels. The first, lower level whose floor is called Tataki (三和土) is where you step onto as you step through the front door. It may be made of tile, concrete, stone, (or packed dirt in a very old traditional house). This is the level where a person steps with his regular shoes, never in bare feet or socked feet, or while wearing inside-the-house slippers.
The second level of the genkan is the higher level (I've seen it being called Genkan Hall (玄関ホール) but I'm not sure this is correct), one or two steps above the lower part of the genkan. This is the level a person steps onto once his shoes are off.
Shoes should be left on the lower level, turned so that the toes are now pointed towards the front door, possibly on the side so as to make room for the others who will come after.
In the anime Enji hardly bothers placing correctly his shoes, and does so only when he decides he'll live in his house alone... though he places them with the tip towas the inside.
Tumblr media
In the manga we see Enji misplacing his shoes only once, when he came back home very angry. We don't know if, in the manga, he normally places them correctly.
Tumblr media
Inside the house one either goes barefoot, with socks only, with house slippers (ハウススリッパ) or with Uwabaki slippers (上履き), a type of Japanese slippers worn indoors at home, school and certain workplaces.
Tumblr media
In present time, Enji, Fuyumi and Shouto (and, in the anime, Natsuo) seem to go for house slippers though in the flashbacks only Rei seemed to use them and the rest of the family was shown going either barefoot or with socks only.
VIEW FROM INSIDE LOOKING TOWARD THE DOOR
Manga and anime seem to paint the Genkan in a mostly similar manner.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The entrance door or Ōdo (大戸) is a sliding one which, for unclear reasons, in Episode 150 is opened on the opposite side compared to the manga and to previous and future episodes... though maybe this is okay for entrance doors. I don't really know.
Tumblr media
Both versions show how the Todoroki have a Getabako (下駄箱), a shoe cupboard where the Todoroki likely place the other shoes they have...
Tumblr media
...though the one in the anime is longer than the one in the manga... and even have a shikidai (式台), a low broad step or platform of timber, in front of it.
Tumblr media
While the manga places on the opposite wall to the Genkan what looks like two windows and an umbrella stand...
Tumblr media
...the anime has different ideas and preferred to put there... what seems to be a painting? Honestly, I'm not sure.
Tumblr media
VIEW FROM OUTSIDE OR ONCE JUST ENTERED LOOKING INSIDE THE HOUSE
The manga was more interested than the anime to show things on this side.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the manga we can see that there's a Kutsunugi-ishi (沓脱石), a shoe removal stone shaped like a step on the lower part of the Genkan. The same goes for the anime...
Tumblr media
Both of course have an Agarikamachi (上がり框) step, which is higher than the tataki floor and leads to the upper part of the Genkan.
Tumblr media
The Todoroki house also have a Tsuitate Shōji (衝立障子), a partitioning screen which was often used in traditional style mansions between the Genkan and the front hall or to partition a section of a room.
Tumblr media
Right in front of the entrance, behind the Tsuitate Shōji, there's what seems to be a Mairado (舞良戸), a wooden sliding door constructed of a single wooden panel, the Wataita (綿板), and set into a timber frame, the Kamachi (框). It is characterized by the addition of thin parallel crosspieces, the Mairako (舞良子) set horizontally on both sides of the panel.
Tumblr media
Now, since the bathroom is generally close to the entrance, it's possible it's a door that lead to the bathroom.
We also see on the wall a marumado (円窓), a circular window with a flat bottom edge.
Tumblr media
In the manga it seems once you pass the Genkan you can only go to the corridor at the right, which is supposedly the one which leads to the training hall...
Tumblr media
...or to the corridor on the left, and this would be the corridor which leads to the dining room.
Tumblr media
In the anime instead there are three corridors, the one on the right that leads to the training hall...
Tumblr media
...the one straight in front of the entrance...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
...and the one on the left which leads to the engawa first and then to the dining room.
Tumblr media
So yeah, again manga and anime paint a different picture of how the Todoroki house is.

BNHA Observations, speculations and assorted info: Todoroki Mansion (Part 7: Kitchen)

School Briefs V "Awkward Year's-End Soba"
OBSERVATIONS, SPECULATIONS AND ASSORTED INFO:
In a house with plenty of rooms which are very traditional Japanese rooms, the Todoroki kitchen is possibly the most western furnished place.
Very little is known about it.
WHERE IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE?
"School Briefs" helps us a little with it.
When Shouto is in the Genkan Fuyumi hears him and greets him and Shouto "heard his older sister shout from deeper in the house".
Short after she reaches it.
So the kitchen should be on the ground floor, 'deeper in the house' but likely close enough to the Genkan Fuyumi can ear Shouto enter and reach him quickly.
Since the bathroom is likely close to the Genkan, the kitchen should also be likely close to it. The story seems to also imply the side room where the family Butsudan is, isn't that distant though we know that, in order to reach it from the kitchen, Enji had to walk near the Dining room. So yeah, the dining room should be closer to the kitchen as well.
DOOR
It's a fusuma door. In the manga it's two doors which slid open in the middle while in the anime it's just one with a light switch near it.
Tumblr media
INSIDE THE ROOM
While Horikoshi generally doesn't retcon the Todoroki house, the first time we see the kitchen the Fusuma door seems to be pretty close to the stove, allowing Rei to easily hit Shouto with boiling water.
Tumblr media
The second time though, we can see the visual seems to imply the door is much more distant from the stove, I mean, there's plenty of space between Enji cleaning the dishes and the table to allow Midoriya and Bakuto to pass while not getting close to him, and the table is placed so that three chairs can fit below it so it's not a small table...
Tumblr media
...and the anime seems to put even more distance between the stove and the door because look, there's plenty of space behind Bakugo who was behind the table...
Tumblr media
..and all this makes weird how Rei could hit Shouto with the boiler on the stove...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
...which, if we have to be honest, is one of the few things the manga retconned in fact notice how in the kettles in the left, the handle is different from the one in the right (the last kettle being shown) and for how in a panel it has a whistle and in the other it doesn't..
Tumblr media
Sure, maybe it's just that the whistle isn't clearly visible... but the whistle was an anime idea as in the anime, when Rei sees Shouto we hear the whistle which didn't happen in the manga the first time the scene was shown but was a good addition so Horikoshi might have wanted to keep it for when he redraw the scene in chap 302.
Well, sadly that's all there's to say about the Todoroki kitchen as we really don't see anything else.
*sighs* probably it's just me but I would love to have floorplans of the Todoroki house...

BNHA Observations, speculations and assorted info: Hospitals (Part 1: Fujitani Hospital)
So, in order to write my fic, I spend much time observing canon scenes, comparing the manga and the anime version, take note of details, translations and info in them as well as finding out how are some things called.
Since what I noticed/speculated/found out can be of use for other fic authors I thought to share as well.

School Briefs I "Notice from School"
OBSERVATIONS, SPECULATIONS AND ASSORTED INFO:
The place in which Todoroki Rei is hospitalized is Fujitani Hospital (藤谷病院 ‘Fujitani Byōin’). Fujitani can be translated as "wisteria valley" and is apparently not a real place. There's a Fujitani clinic (藤谷医院 'Fujitani iin') in Osaka but it's clearly not the same place.
Japanese fans speculated the name comes from one of Horikoshi's assistants, Fujiya (藤谷), whose surname is written the same, though the spelling is different. Honestly I couldn't see any spelling notation for the hospital so it can be we're just spelling it wrong... or I missed the spelling notation.
The hospital is likely not close to the Todoroki home.
In chap 189 Fuyumi and Natsuo in order to return home after visiting their mother take a taxi.
Episode 25 instead shows Shouto had to walk quite a bit, then take a train then walk some more.
OUTSIDE
The best image of the outside of the hospital comes from chap 290 of the manga, in which Horikoshi clearly finalized the design, while we could fist read the hospital's name in chap 187
Tumblr media
ENTRANCE
We can only see there are sliding doors in both versions.
Tumblr media
RECEPTION
No big changes here the image on the manga is more accurate and shows the nurses also have pc. The ceiling is kind of different.
Tumblr media
CORRIDOR
The corridor is mostly the same, the anime only adds a support so people who've to walk through it can support themselves with them.
Tumblr media
REI'S ROOM ENTRANCE
The differences between manga and anime are minimal, the window on the door in the manga seems smaller and the sign with Rei's name is different though the number of the room is the same, 315.
Tumblr media
REI'S ROOM INSIDE VIEWS
Episode 25 adds some details to Rei's room but changes the type of window... though they'll change it into one that matches the manga in episode 88 (same goes for the desk which also gets changed in one matching the one in the manga). The anime also turns the door into a sliding one. Accessories (a lamp and other controllers) are added on the wall next to Rei's bed only to be removed later on.
I do wonder if the slight wisteria tinge in episode 25 is due to the hospital name... later though it will be removed the head of the bed turned first grey and then brown.
They also first will add a furniture on top of which there's a tv next to Rei's bed, to remove it and replace it with a wardrobe and in an episode we'll see a chair that'll disappear in the following ones.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Long story short, there's no consistency whatsoever in how the anime depicts Rei's room, which becomes particularly evident in Episode 105 in which they change the disposition of the furniture, moving the desk in front of the window and the bed on the other side of the room, changing even the kind of window Rei had (but everything will be back to their places in episode 124)
Tumblr media
CEILING
Tumblr media
We get some other additional info from "School Briefs".
Fujitani Hospital is described as “…a large white building lit up in shades of orange by the setting sun. The hospital where his mother was institutionalized. Though clinic hours were just about over, the lobby was brimming with patients waiting to check out. Todoroki glanced at the scene as he hurried into an elevator destined for the upper levels. It wasn’t his first time coming here, but the boy noticed how nervous he was as he stared at the floor display, tickling up.”
“The elevator doors slid open quietly, and Todoroki emerged into a corridor bathed in silence, unlike the lobby below. The faint scent of antiseptic common to most hospitals reminded him of his own recent stay…”
“As he passed the nurses’ station, a nurse he’d become acquainted with called out to Todoroki.”
“He had half a mind to ask a question, but the station phone started ringing, so he kept walking.”
We move to Rei's room, for which we only get the story to mention tiny bits of furniture and the fact there's actually a minifridge in the room under the desk.
“With the barred window at her back, a soft smile crept into her eyes, which opened wide.”
““Oh… Nothing, honey. Come on in. Sit,” replied his mother, offering Todoroki her own chair.”
“Todoroki checked the minifridge under the desk and found a few bottles of soft drinks, as well as a yogurt drink with a cartoon cow on the carton, clearly meant for children.”
“As if she’d done it a million times before, Fuyumi stuffed the bundle of clothing onto a shelf.”
And that's all I could find on the place.

BNHA EP 105 - The Hellish Todoroki Family - part 1
I’m not gonna lie, I’m a huge sucker for the Endeavor internship arc, and for this particular dinner, so this was probably the most anticipated episode of S5 for me.
The anime for once tried to put in some extra scenes. I really appreciated the extra bits of the training part, it gave a sense of how hard the trio worked.

Though I have to say that considering Shouto was supposed to be training flashfire, we only ever saw him move with his ice, totally forgetting that 2 episodes ago he came up with the idea of using fire for propulsion.
We got an (unnecessarily) lengthy flashback to Endeavor’s dilemma about what to do for his family, which re-treaded the Todoroki family history. Though I appreciated that they actually incorporated some new cuts into the old, well-known scenes. (Like making it crystal clear that Enji did hit Rei as if anyone had doubts.)

The extra shots of Endeavor’s dream was really nice

And I loved that anime-only scene where Fuyumi and Endeavor are talking about Shouto visiting Rei for the first time. I’ve always wondered how that went down.

The morning in the agency was also very cute, with Deku running to catch up with Kacchan and a small added impromptu analysis of Shouto’s progress as they both ignore Bakugou’s attempts at baiting Shouto. Delightful trio dynamics.

The action shots were also really cool - it gave the feel of a packed day of hero work.
Loved how flustered Deku was at meeting Fuyumi and the awkward discussion about the Sport Festival - touchy touchy topic for all three boys, also for Endeavor I imagine… (look at Bakugou pointedly glaring away - hehe)

Haha, the awkward introductions were a nice addition - Fuyumi reminding Shouto of good manners - definitely had that surrogate mom vibe I always imagined she had in Shouto’s life. Shouto’s introduction is still hilariously blunt / impolite.

All of the food was gorgeous - an ode to mapo tofu, like it was supposed to be.

Overall I really enjoyed the dinner part - the awkward silences, Deku overanalysing his food, the rising tension - I think the beats were there and it was animated with a lot of care and great VA as usual.
Damn the picture limit - I guess I’ll do the rest in Part 2
