BnHA Chapter 340: Now Where Were We

Previously on BnHA: Deku and Iida were all “hey Mei, I know you don’t have a lot of spare time in between constantly launching yourself at people boob-first, and singlehandedly MacGuyvering U.A. into the fucking Death Star, but we were wondering if you could lend us a hand in fixing our costumes.” Mei was all, “sure thing, here’s an upgraded pair of Movie 1 Gloves for you, anyways off you go and have fun saving the world!” Mt. Lady was all, “can you kids keep a secret?? so uh, just between you and me, I’m not a real teacher, and I’m not actually sure what I’m doing here hanging out with you guys right now.” Class 1-A was all, “don’t worry, your secret is safe with us Mt. Lady, well anyways time to assemble our CLASS 1-A SEARCH SQUAD!” The chapter ended with A BUNCH OF DIFFERENT PEOPLE getting ready to DO and/or TALK about A BUNCH OF DIFFERENT THINGS. Classic cliffhanger ending. lol this chapter really did not hold up on a re-read. I’m so sorry BnHA 339. You meandered so that future chapters could hopefully get to the damn point already.

Today on BnHA: All Might is all “time to reveal our shocking and completely unpredictable battle plan of splitting up all the villains for more easily digestible mini-boss battles, using our newly acquired trump card, the handy dandy U.A. traitor!” Aizawa is all, “[cracks knuckles] time to drop some motherfucking love and compassion onto my traumatized student in order to talk him into doing this INSANELY DANGEROUS TASK for us, except that somehow I manage to do it in a way that’s genuinely moving and heartfelt and somehow not manipulative at all lol.” Shinsou is all, “hello, it’s me, making my miraculous return after three whole years of plot inactivity, so anyway what have I missed.” Well shit. Glad I’m not the only one, Shinsou.

(just a handful of quick notes here since it’s been a while! (1) as always, these are my completely blind first-time-reading reactions to the chapter. (2) as of today, I am very much NOT caught up with the manga, but will keep you posted on my progress. currently I have read up to chapter 340, a.k.a. this chapter right here lol. and (3), I have been spoiled about one major thing (explained more in depth here) which will happen later in the series, and while there are no detailed references to said spoiler in this post, there ARE a couple of vague throwaway lines because I have absolutely no self-control. so just giving you guys a heads up for that! if you absolutely don’t want to risk getting spoiled, I would highly recommend catching up with the manga first before reading any further.

OH MY GOSH IT’S SOME BUILDINGS!!!

WHAT A THRILLING WAY TO KICK OFF MY FIRST NEW CHAPTER OF BNHA IN ELEVEN MONTHS. TRULY HIT THE GROUND RUNNING

lol they literally just thumbtacked a handwritten “LOV/PLF COUNTER-FORCE HQ” sign on a wrinkled piece of paper next to the door. how far we have fallen from the days where the heroes were holding their war councils in huge NASA ground control rooms filled with hundreds of TV screens

okay good, at least they went out and recruited Hawks to be one of the people presumably planning this whole thing

one of only two people (the other being Momo) whom I actually trust to be able to come up with a reliably smart plan. fingers crossed this turns out better than his last big Ultimate Hero Final Battle Plan, though!

interesting! I assume they do still know about the whole Aoyama situation though, seeing as they even told Mt. flippin’ Lady lol

OH MY GOSH, RAGDOLL? heck yeah. great to see her finally back in the thick of things again. even if she can’t participate in the actual battle, she’s still a fucking hero goddammit

anyway, so on to the planning and stuff

I’m actually on the fence about this lol. I mean, it makes sense on paper. lord knows they had enough trouble taking on just one massively overpowered final villain, so who even knows what would happen if they added a second one to the mix

but the problem with the “just take them down separately” plan is that it means they’ll also have to split up their OWN forces, which are already heavily depleted. not to mention that the BnHA heroes are always at their best when they’re all fighting together. so anyways, yeah, I’m not too sure about this

so blah blah blah, Tomura is now stronger than crusty!potato!AFO, big surprise. and they’ve also figured out that the two AFOs can communicate with each other via radio waves or whatever. okay yeah, but doesn’t that mean that even if you do split them up, they’ll still have a big advantage? unless you figured out some way of jamming their telepathy somehow

“should they attack together, we have no hope of victory” lol if you say so. I’m pretty sure all of the U.A. kids combined with all of the remaining A-list heroes could hold their ground fairly well, but clearly I’m not supposed to be questioning the authority of this statement so ALL RIGHT THEN

OKAY BUT DOESN’T THIS JUST PROVE MY POINT THOUGH

“if they’re so powerful together then why didn’t they team up against S&S?” “because they definitely would have definitely lost.” ????????

anyway so now All Might is saying that they need to separate TomurAFO and Potato AFO (PotAFO, if you will) by at least 10km. so is that the max range of their telepathy or something then? that’s so oddly specific though

“oh and we also need to split up Dabi from them as well” ah okay lol, I see where this is going. it’s finally time for the final battle, meaning we need to assign each of the main characters to their personal final villain, yeah? great. awesome. except that they only JUST got reunited all together as a class again sob. you’re really going to do this to me again now?? just like that?? goddammit

LMAO I completely forgot that Nao’s right hand man is an actual literal fucking cat

anyway so now All Might is all “YEAH EXACTLY, WE HAVE TO DIVIDE AND CONQUER ALL OF THE VILLAINS ONE ON ONE! WHAT DO YOU THINK WE SPENT ALL THAT TIME PAINSTAKINGLY BUILDING THEM UP FOR?? IT’S THE FINAL BATTLE FOR FUCK’S SAKE, WHAT ELSE WOULD YOU HAVE US DO, MAKESTE” okay okay fine I’ll shut up now, geez

somehow I momentarily forgot all about Aoyama. possibly because I haven’t seen him in eleven months!! so this is where we’re finally going to get into the nitty gritty of that “let’s use Aoyama to set a trap” plan that Aizawa shamelessly stole from Kaminari all those moons ago

All Might is all “it’s actually pretty messed up of us to be using this poor boy when he’s already basically spent his entire life being exploited and manipulated by people” and he’s not wrong though, damn

but Nao is all “very true, but to be fair this is the literal apocalypse, and he did technically make his own bed, and also our backs are REALLY against the goddamn wall here,” which is also true. still leaning more toward All Might’s side in spite of that, though. poor Yuuga

Aizawa Shouta is sitting here wearing an eyepatch and a hospital gown and probably hasn’t showered in like three days, and despite all this he is STILL somehow the hottest character in BnHA and it’s not even close

okay but there are like a thousand reasons why the threat of imminent murder would be infinitely more useful than an actual murder, though. like this doesn’t really make any sense. “why would AFO bother to threaten Aoyama if he could simply blow him up if and when he betrayed him?” uh, gee, maybe because he would much prefer if Aoyama didn’t actually betray him in the first place?? what, do you think U.A. traitors are so fucking easy to come by? in this economy??

I mean, of course he is? :( man, and now I’m wondering if there’s been a single day since his enrollment at U.A. that Aoyama has not spent being constantly terrified about a whole damn slew of things. this poor fucking kid. Horikoshi please be kind to him oh my god

he’s afraid that deep down he’s a bad person. he’s afraid that AFO will kill him. but interestingly, what he’s most afraid of, is BEING afraid. he’s afraid that if the others put their trust in him again, that when push comes to shove he’ll still be too cowardly to do what’s right

talk about ironic though. because to me, that’s a sentiment that basically confirms that he does have the heart of a hero deep down. I’m telling you guys, every single time you show me a character who is flawed and afraid, but is trying so hard to overcome their fears, and trying with all their might to become better, you will reel me in hook, line, and sinker every. single. time. seriously, how could you possibly not root for this kid now

Yuuga’s fear as he tries to talk himself into what he fully believes is a suicide mission. Aizawa’s blunt assessment of the heroes being no less ruthless than the villains when their backs are to the wall. but then the way he just HITS him with that “you’re still my student and I’m still your teacher” line, and how he says it with such finality. and then the face Aoyama makes in response!!

well damn. that hype and anticipation is definitely starting to build now. I am so damn fearful for all of these fictional kids’ safety, especially now that I’m watching the War arc play out again in the anime and remembering just how brutal it was. but at the same time I can’t deny that I’m super excited to see the culmination of everything. like, this is IT, though. this is THE moment, THE battle. no more safety arcs. no more training. we are done holding back, and that is as terrifying as it is exhilarating. I am so not ready for any of this, but IT IS HAPPENING WHETHER I LIKE IT OR NOT, so I guess I’ll just do my best to enjoy the ride

Do you mind if I ask your top 10 favorite characters (can be male or female) from all of the media that you loved (can be anime/manga, books, movies or tv series)? And why do you love them? Sorry if you've answered this question before.....Thanks..

No need to apologize! I love asks and I’m happy to answer 🌸I’ve had someone ask for my top 5 and as I mentioned for that one that determining top faves across all series is hard because I have top 5 (and sometimes top 10) for every series and it feels like I’m leaving out my faves

Here’s my top 10 from animanga because going across mediums to all media is also hard and whew I have top 5/10 for each type of media.

In no particular order

1. Satoru Gojo (Jujutsu Kaisen)

There’s so many reasons why Gojo’s my fave but for the sake of keeping this post short, I love the way he goes all out for his students (which I relate to) and appreciate how he wants to dismantle the toxic system of elders that essentially uses sorcerers as pawns and robs them of their youth and sends them to early graves. His silliness is fun as well but beneath that goofy exterior is someone who bears the weight of being the strongest and the loneliness it brings, and cares deeply, and wants those kids to have what he never could. I also relate to the whole goofy exterior to mask the crushing emotional interior thing

2. Osamu Dazai (Bungou Stray Dogs)

Dazai is such a fascinating character. His intellect, the way he and Fyodor are like two halves of the same coin; the way he mentored Akutagawa and Atsushi but at different points in his life so that mentoring was negative for one and positive for the other and led to resentment in the dynamic of those two; the way he navigated the port mafia, lived underground, and then joined the agency; Odasaku; his mental health journey; I just…whew Dazai is so interesting and I also, like Gojo, relate to him in too many ways to tease out in this post, but the goofy exterior mask/heavy emotional interior is one

3. Shouta Aizawa (BNHA)

This man is the GOAT. He goes all out for those students (seeing a pattern here?). He cares, he exhausted and still keeps going and won’t stop until his students are safe and achieve their dreams (relate). He’s sacrificed so much. The whole Oboro thing and him dealing with that guilt and grief I just…I could go on about Aizawa for days. He’s amazing.

4. Chuuya Nakahara (Bungou Stray Dogs)

Literally have a tag I use for him (what can I say chuuyas my fave) because what can I say…he really is my fave. Chuuya’s fascinating because of the whole Arahabaki situation. Stormbringer and Fifteen I just…*screeching noises* Not to mention his history with Dazai, the way he keeps helping Dazai and later the Agency, his intense loyalty but also his internal compass that leads him to do what he feels he should, I could go on about Chibi Chuuya

5. Touya Todoroki (BNHA)

Listen, the Todoroki family is my fave (another custom tag I use) and Touya…I can’t even begin. He’s also fascinating and the backstory for him and the whole fam and what Enji’s pride and ego did to them. I’ve written posts about Touya and the fam that get into why he and the fam are my fave in my pinned post

6. Kento Nanami (Jujutsu Kaisen)

Nanami is incredible! He works hard, abhors overtime, and wants to make sure these students aren’t fighting because they’re flippin kids and adults should handle adult scary situations—which I love so much about him. It’s rare in shonen and his intensity about protecting those students and fighting for them I love so much. I also relate to Nanami on the point of having the job that paid well but snatched out my soul and turned me into a shell. *weeps* I just…I love Nanami and I can’t say why else I love him because spoilers but…I love Nanami

7. Koutarou Bokuto (Haikyuu!!)

“Bokuto will owlways be my fave” is another tag I use for a reason, he’s a major fave! I love how he takes Hinata and the Karasuno boys under his wing and helps train them up but also is just like the best big volleyball bro for them. (Akaashi is also a fave because they’re like a package deal given Bokuto’s moods) He’s a fun character and so sweet and caring. He works hard but has fun just as hard. Bokuto just makes me smile

8. Spike Spiegel (Cowboy Bebop)

Spike…I love Spike. “Y’all don’t understand how much I love Spike Spiegel” is a tag for a reason. Spike is cool, has good advice, he doesn’t take himself too seriously, he’s…idk he’s a very real type of character idk how to explain it. I finally watched this series when I was 27 and something about being his age and being on the adventure with him during the time in my life when I watched it…just absolutely life changing. His ship is tattooed on my arm with “whatever happens happens” because Spike and Bebop legit changed my life and Spike and the crew taught me so much about how I wanted to live going forward

9. Senku Ishigami (Dr. Stone)

Oh Senku. My science son Senku, this kid is tenacious as hell! He does/did so much! I loved reading this series and can’t wait for the rest of it to be animated. Senku rebuilds the world and teaches science to the revived without being a condescending jerk about it. He’s 10 billion percent interested in science and helping people and changing the world and he’s ambitious and goes through a personality growth through the series and just…ah! I’m proud of him and I know Byakuya would be too.

10. Inuyasha (Inuyasha)

Inuyasha is a fave because he’s the first anime character I called my fave. I remember accidentally finding this series when new eps appeared on adultswim and just immediately getting sucked into an episode where Kagome was possessed and aimed an arrow at him and it was a standoff, I was riveted and that kick started my love for anime. Aside from owing my interest to him, he’s an awesome character. He’s moody at times yes but at the end of the day he cares about his friends and Kagome and will go out of his way to help and make sure they’re safe, and I love that.

Oooh this is hard. If we're talking first first i HAVE to say nihal/sennar from the Cronache del Mondo Emerso. But, like, i didnt even know what shipping was then. If we're counting conscious shipping time then we land in my twilight era yes i had one yes they were my introduction to fandom spaces and fanfics as a whole. Yes i was team jacob. Kill Boksoon - on netflix. Weird, but i loved how the actress went from hidden feral in crash course in romance to full out feral in this movie. Also bonus points for the daughter drama ily. Plus, whatever the hell was going on with the triangular table in the boss' office in the last scene? I want that level of chaos.

⚠️MAJOR BNHA MANGA CH. 362/363 SPOILER⚠️

okay so i read the newest chapters a couple of days ago (bcs i’ve been slacking and haven’t been keeping up with the updates) and i have to get smth off my chest: i am so mad and upset, but also so so so impressed.

if horikoshi killed katsuki off in the beginning of the series— maybe after his fight with izuku where he cries or even before that— it would’ve been sad still (he’s so young) but not as impactful. he gave katsuki a whole arc: he stopped being a bully, started being more considerate of other people’s feelings, made actual friends instead of shitty ‘lackies’ or whatever, reflected on his past experiences/actions and started expressing his emotions more clearly, protected izuku with his body (smth he valued almost egotistically before) and even had a heart-to-heart with izuku where he apologized for everything he’s ever done to hurt the aforementioned. katsuki is such a 3-dimensional character; if you asked a reader how katsuki would react in a certain situation, they would have an answer for every version of him throughout his arc. he is extremely loved by the fandom, to the point that there are analyses of his behaviour in certain scenes and multiple ships of him with other characters. he is a main character, through and through.

to kill him so late into the series is such a terrible, incredible move. it’s almost as if we, the readers, feel the same grief as the other characters in the story. “he was so young, so passionate,” we think, “it’s not fair; he just got his redemption.” it makes us angry at horikoshi’s decision and at the same time, dejected from the loss of our dear bakugou katsuki, a character that is a living-breathing-feeling person in our hearts. we can already imagine how izuku is going to react: we can imagine what everyone’s reactions will be, bcs we know his relationships with the other character like the back of our hands and we have seen him hurt before. he has immense depth, and for him to die at the peak of the war has such a large influence on not only the situation and the people inside the book— his friends and family and teachers— but on the people outside, on us too. it feels as if we too lost a student, a relative, a friend.

whether he actually dies or is revived at the end (both of which would work in my opinion, but i’d be madder if it were the former), it is such an impactful death. it feels like smth i’ll never recover from. it took a whole day for me to regain my strength after i read that chapter, and all i could think about during this time were two things: “i am so goddamn angry but also so incredibly depressed” and “i wish i could write such an incredible scene.”

any bookworm (or even TV/movie-watcher) knows that a death is so much worse when we know and love them. it feels personal. and horikoshi wrote it so well, it twisted my world on its axis.

maybe people have different opinions on this (which is completely okay! i am one of the least qualified people to talk abt quality of writing of any kind), but this is just what i believe and felt after reading ch. 362-363. :,)

ALSO the fact that horikoshi showed us katsuki’s parents going ‘that boy hates rain’ right as he died should be illegal. THE ALL MIGHT CARD TOO— bye.

Some headcanon to my sugusato husband (and Geto teacher) au

Despite appearances, Gojo is the one who usually gets up earlier and wakes the other one up. This is because Gojo is awake most of the night. He usually listens to Geto's heartbeat.

Geto makes breakfast because Gojo doesn't want to cook.

Geto drives a car, Gojo has never been interested in learning it.

At the school, Geto is known for his tough workouts. No one actually knows what Gojo teaches.

Geto always wins in hand-to-hand combat. Gojo is able to win against him when he uses the secret puppy eye technique, but he is unaware that it works.

Geto asks Ijichji to keep an eye on whether Gojo is eating out.

Ijichi and Shoko have a spare key to the sugusato house in case of emergencies.

Ijichi often uses it to clean up in their apartment.

Gojo buys him lunch in thanks.

They eat their lunches separately.

After dinner, depending on fatigue, they either complete reports or watch movies.

Both are equally jealous of each other. Geto is the one who would "gouge out the eyes of anyone who looks at Satoru".

Geto is obsessed with Gojo's ass.

Geto is the hornier one in the relationship. Gojo , "is interested in sex if it has to do with Suguru".

Love that toh never tries to explain whatever the fuck is going on with Hooty, like everything we get to know just raises more questions. Eda just created him. He can swallow people whole and regurgitate them, he can skin himself and puts his skin like clothes to dry, he can get out of the house and the whole thing is horrifying and leaves behind still beating organs, he has several shark like teeth through out his throat. Is any of this explained? No n i love it, i hope he keeps getting worse❤

Trying to figure out how to really explain it but god it’s so pathetic that it’s almost hilarious how hard the mcu is trying to make holland spidey into actual spidey when like. green goblin is just some homeless dude

they brought willem dafoe’s green goblin, his rich ceo of a huge science corporation, into the mcu and had him actually state that his company and the Osborne name just did not exist in the mcu. literally, he went looking for his company and found nothing, he went looking for his son and found nothing (he would’ve joined forces with his mcu counterpart if they existed but they canonically just Do Not Exist At All)

and this is meant to be The Big Villain of the movie! Peter Parker’s most famous foe and the mcu just could not make him into a rich ceo and like. Norman Osborne is Just Some Dude in the mcu. the one single villain that literally could not be reworked into “seems like they should be the villain of an iron man movie but go off I guess” and he’s Just Some Random Dude to Holland’s spidey and not the father of his very best friend or the ceo behind the company whose radioactive spider gave him spider powers

like, I know that Willem Dafoe is gonna knock his performance out the park when I finally watch the movie but goddamn this is so fucking pathetic that the mcu, that Mouse Corp, is so against having a villain be a rich dude that they obliterated one of marvel’s most iconic villains

and they want to take on Dr Victor Von Doom, who I’m gonna call will end up being some angry intern with vague beef that he got overlooked by Dr Reed Richards and make some weird iron man-like suit to make him on equal standing instead of the monarch of a country

imagine a "humans are space orcs" story where humans and aliens can't understand the other's language, and it's told from an alien's POV. however, the twist is the alien doesn't call humans "humans" nor do they ever specify their own species. the reader has no idea the MC is an alien, or that the human's a human until close to the end when they're able to communicate some and the human's like "i can't believe i'm one of the first humans to meet an alien"

the Truman Show is such a good movie. the attention to detail throughout the entire movie is just amazing! Marlon stocking the vending machine while talking to Truman, but then quickly taking them out when Truman's not looking. Truman needing to take vitamins because he's never been in the sun. all the funky camera angles, and how Meryl frequently smiles directly at them. the way all the "background characters" just act so plain weird! when Truman starts to realize something's up, and steps out of his routine, they all continue playing their parts even though in reality people would stare at the man running and shouting! if someone driving almost ran into someone who was being careless, they would hop out of the car and go what are you doing! people would grumble and complain that the bus wasn't working, not quickly get off the bus as if they were waiting for the announcement! the lack of headrests in the vehicles so they can get better camera angles. the way everything is just too crisp, and clean to be real. i just love this movie so much

15. What’s your favorite AU that you’ve written?

I have two.

I wrote a Captain America (MCU) fic called If No One Else Will where Steve joins the Monuments Men in order to do something to help on the European front. Bucky tags along and the fic picks up when Hydra kidnaps Bucky and then Steve has to save the day as a tiny guy without any super serum. It's one of my favorites because I got to put the fact I grew up learning about World War II to good use and it was fun to come up with stuff like giving Steve his shield without him being a beefcake. I also learned a lot about the state of stuff like asthma in the 1940's when it was considered psycho-somatic.

I wrote a self-indulgent Black Clover/Boruto crossover when the Black Clover movie was first announced. I called it The Land Across the Sea. I started with the concept of Yami visiting his homeland as a potential movie plot, got the final scene pretty much in full immediately, and then chose to make it a Boruto crossover so Naruto and Yami could be somewhat friends from childhood. It was an easy write and I enjoy it. It's a little weak in places but it was fun to imagine how it might go and do some fun things like promoting Noelle and Asta to vice captain for different squads.

16. What’s an AU you would love to read (or have read and loved)?

I want to write a BnHA/MHA AU in which Class A and Aizawa have to go back in time to Yagi's high school days to save him from a villain kind of a la Tenchi in Love. I've written quite a bit of it but when I got to Midoriya and Nana interacting in the past it got a bit difficult so I set it aside and haven't picked it back up yet. Also we now kind of know of Tohru's quirk works and this particular AU hinged on her having a different quirk, but that'll just make it even more AU if I ever write it.

17. What highly specific AU do you want to read or write even though you might be the only person to appreciate it?

The most recent one in this vein I wrote was an Interview with the Vampire (AMC) Armand/Louis/Daniel fic The Mortal and the Vampires based loosely on a dark retelling of the fairytale Beauty and the Beast in which potentially canonical events lead to an eventual confrontation between the polycule and one of the penthouse servants who has come to realize they'll never be offered immortality. It was based on a conversation I'd had with another fic author about how Armand having to let Daniel go kind of reminded me of how the Beast has to let Beauty go in the story.

Right now I don't have any highly specific AUs like that rattling through my head. If they're that specific and clear to me, I always end up writing them. Another recent-ish in this vein was my Black Clover AU And There Was Still Hope that explored some manga spoilers about Yuno in a universe in which he didn't receive the Wind grimoire.

18. If you wrote a sequel to [insert fic], what would it involve?

I'm not sure if I have any fics right now that I've got any sequel ideas for. I haven't had any sequel requests either, so I'm not sure.

19. If you wrote a spin-off of [insert fic], what would it involve?

I'm not sure if I'd call it a "spin off," but I do kind of want to take my IwtV (AMC) fic Dream a Memory of Me and retool it and give it a better ending. I don't think I'll ever get around to it, but the more I learn and remember of Vampire Chronicles, the more that first fic of mine makes me cringe a bit. That said, it's not terrible, just could be better.

20. If you wrote a prequel to [insert fic], what would it involve?

I'm not really sure because I don't really have any fics I've got prequel ideas for or requests for.
