Lesser-Known BNHA Character Details

A list of things from the light novels, spin-offs, and such that I think more people should know about because they’re fun •w•

For reference on my personal canon hierarchy, with the exception of spoofs (SMASH, I’m looking at you) I consider the main manga and anime the top, and accept everything else that doesn’t contradict the information provided there—for example, I’ll accept Tsuyu’s ghost encounter as canon, but I personally believe she was with a cousin at the time since we know she doesn’t have an older sister.

Yaomomo’s mother is a very sweet person who goes out of her way to make her daughter’s friends feel welcome, adores Jirou, and has been nicknamed Yaomama. She is also a terrible cook and has the critical thinking skills of a sea cucumber (source: light novels, specifically volumes 2 and 3)

There is a pro hero named Odd-Eye who basically embodies Middle Schooler Syndrome. His Quirk is forcing people to reveal their embarrassing secrets (source: Team Up Missions volume 2)

Izuku likes zombie movies, or at the very least has seen enough of them to know their common tropes (source: Training of the Dead OVA)

Aizawa became a teacher out of peer pressure, mostly from Midnight (source: Vigilantes)

Izuku becomes a “bloodthirsty quiz demon” during trivia games. Most people are terrified by this, but Eri thinks it’s cool (source: light novels volume 4)

The large scar on Izuku’s right arm is from Dabi, not Muscular. When the boys land in the clearing, Dabi’s fire is seen brushing his arm exactly where he later has the scar (source: main story, training camp arc)

Kendo doesn’t feel fully comfortable being called a woman, noting that the word feels like “a burden” and she prefers to be defined on her own terms (source: light novels volume 4)

Rody’s younger siblings are baby weebs (source: Team Up Missions volume 3)

After the events of Two Heroes, the Shields are no longer living on I-Island, which is likely why Melissa is able to travel freely (source: Team Up Missions volume 1)

Shouto’s listed blood type of O is impossible, as Endeavor’s blood type is listed as AB. My best explanation for this is that Shouto has a mutation that results in his blood genotype being A and phenotype being O, meaning his actual blood type is A (source: Ultra Analysis and my 10th-grade biology class)

Hagakure knows how to make booby traps, and likely does so regularly (source: Team Up Missions volume 2)

Shinsou can read lips (source: Team Up Missions volume 3)

Kouda can’t actually understand animals, only control them (source: light novels volume 3)

Shouto spent a good part of move-in day running around campus helping Hatsume. Recovery Girl gave him the tatami mats, which he specifically wanted because he didn’t like how the floor felt on his feet (source: light novels volume 3)

Hagakure and Tsunotori liked the same anime as kids (source: light novels volume 3)

If Ochako could have any of the boys’ Quirks, she would want Bakugo’s, specifically so she could go wild in a fight (source: light novels volume 2)

Bakugo has never gotten Valentine’s chocolate (source: light novels volume 6)

Shouto has stated he’s “not looking for that kind of action” while in conversation with the grape, which to me implies that he’s not interested in girls (source: light novels volume 6)

Aizawa is supposed to tell Mic if he’s going drinking (source: light novels volume 3)

Man, Touya is definitely his father's son, and Shouto is definitely his mother's son

Touya--has indulged in hopelessness the entire time. Felt that the family can't change, won't change, feels the only option left is for him to die and destroy what he can as he dies.

Enji--held on a little bit but in the end he also gave into hopeless, thinks it's too late for Touya both emotionally and physically, thinking that Touya can't stop or change at this point, won't stop, won't stop involving other people in his revenge, so he gives in and feels that the only option is to die with his son

Then we have Rei

Rei--jumps in despite the risks, jumps in to do what she couldn't do back then, not giving up and not accepting anymore loss for her family

Shouto--not giving up and doing everything he can to get to Touya despite his doubt, still going to his family

Shouto and Rei are mother and son, just as Touya and Enji sure are father and son. They are hopeless on their own, they are hopeless with just each other, they are hopeless without their family. They all need each other to make it out.

My Childhood Headcanons for Ojiro!

Since my blog is full of cobwebs, here's my Ojiro backstory headcanons. Poor guy has very little canon info, so over the years I've made my own.💛

Sure, Ojiro is docile now. But he wasn't always.

He was a weak and frustrated little kid.

The idea his quirk was pathetic was drilled into him early by his classmates.

Their hurtful words left him feeling so small and worthless, like his dream of becoming a Pro Hero was unattainable.

He took the bullying, no matter how severe it was, until his parents got blamed for his quirk.

He got into plenty of fights once the kids realised insulting his parents was a way to anger him.

He was unwilling to tell his parents why he kept getting into trouble, so they sent him away for a summer to sort out his head.

He stayed with an old family friend, a monk who lived in the mountains at a temple.

He trained with the monk, learned how to channel his frustration into compassion, and found his true strength in hand-to-hand combat.

When Ojiro returned at the end of summer, he was like an entirely different child. Calm, happy, and most importantly, he was at peace.

He begged his parents to let him return to the mountains next summer, and so they did.

After that second summer, Ojiro dedicated himself to the martial arts.

At first, the kids still bullied him. But when his discipline and hard work began to show in the size of his muscles, particularly those in the tail his classmates had once deemed 'pathetic and plain', the bullying ceased.

In fact, many weaker kids saw his transformation and sheepishly asked if he would train them, so they could stand up for themselves too.

Ojiro was only too happy to help, but he always repeated the same lesson that the monks had taught him: 'A warrior must fight with courage, not with anger'.

Eventually, it was his classmates who encouraged him to try for U.A. High.

If anyone deserved a place as their hero, it was the hardworking tailman.

And so, with a goal to return to his hometown as their patrolling hero, Ojiro took the entrance exam.

The thing was, Sorahiko thought ruefully, most of Shigaraki Hisashi was a big theatrical performance. Very little of what Hisashi did wasn’t calculated to extract the most positive reaction from his audience; the flashes of his real character--the greedy bastard who could hold a grudge like no other--only emphasized the philanthropist act.

So it was not a particularly wise move on Sorahiko’s part to marry the man.

“You’re distracted,” said Hisashi, murmuring it right into Sorahiko’s ear. They were chest to chest, swaying on the dance floor of the reception party. A large hand was plastered against the small of his back; all the white wine had settled pleasantly in his stomach.

“A little bit,” he admitted. “You put us in the middle of the dance floor.”

“As we should be. Do the newlyweds yield attention on their own special day? Absolutely not! All the time planning, arranging, negotiating,” and here, Hisashi nudged Sorahiko backwards and a little bit sideways, until Sorahiko had a clear line-of-sight to Nana’s exasperated expression, “we deserve the spotlight.”

“Not my style.”

“I know,” his new husband said fondly. “But you wear it well, my dear.”

Sorahiko blinked away from wordlessly reminding Nana not to punch a hole through her best friend, and he grumbled, “Sweet-talking me into marriage is over and done with, you can stop flirting.”

“Can, but won’t.”

“There’s nothing to prove,” he protested, and drummed his left hand’s fingers on Hisashi’s shoulder. The plain platinum band caught the soft orange lighting of the reception hall; Sorahiko couldn’t stop toying with it all throughout the dinner. It was an oddly weightless thing. He suspected Hisashi had imbued the metal with something, but Sorahiko wasn’t about to ask a question he couldn’t confirm on his own.

“Perhaps not to you,” Hisashi agreed, “but to others? Oh, I find that we’ll have to constantly provide evidence.”

He steered Sorahiko into a short spin and urged him into a dip. Sorahiko fell into it easily and tipped his head back too, eyes closing even as he felt Hisashi following the motion. Unbothered by Sorahiko’s build, Hisashi let Sorahiko lean for four long seconds. 

It had to be a display. More performative nonsense, Sorahiko thought grouchily as he cracked an eye open to peer at Hisashi’s.

Except Hisashi wasn’t looking down at Sorahiko--he was looking smugly, triumphantly even, past him to where Nana and Toshinori’s table was. Then Hisashi turned his hungry scarlet gaze to Sorahiko and smiled wide.

“Evidence,” said Sorahiko, and it came out far too breathily for his liking.

“Correct,” Hisashi said, and tilted his head to kiss Sorahiko.

Trivia Tuesday

Rumi Plans A Double Date, The Todoroki’s Get Distracted the part of Toga Steals Children, Eri Steals Hearts where Dabi gets found out was originally entirely from Rumi’s perspective and had a more humorous tone before I decided that Fuyumi and Touya deserved a more heartfelt reunion. Here’s some bits from the less serious version!

Rumi flicks her ears in their direction, hoping to pick something up that might explain his weird reaction.

“Hey, Da-, are you okay? What’s wrong?”

“You didn’t say she’d be here.” The boyfriend hisses.

“Who? Rumi? I told you she was Mirko-”

“No, her girlfriend.”

“What? I don’t-, I didn’t know you knew each other.”

“Nope, I can’t do this.”

It’s hard to parse out with the other people chattering but she thinks he moves away.

“What? We just got here!”

“There is no way.”

“Oh my god. Did you try to kill her? Is that what this is about? I swear to fucking-”

“I didn’t try to kill her!”

“Then what? Did you have a bad breakup with some random elementary school teacher in between all the arson?”

What the fuck Keigo. 

You could have just about any guy you want.

Why did you decide to go with a former arsonist? God, Rumi hopes it’s former arsonist.

“No, Gross.”

“What’s gross about dating random elementary school teachers?” He sounds exasperated.

“Nothing-, god. We’ll talk about it later.”

“Fine, are we leaving or not?” His voice softens slightly at the end. 

Oh, oh no.

This is worse than she feared.

He is totally gone on this scruffy, lanky, hopefully former arsonist who still threatens to burn down government buildings.

Rumi had no idea her best friend had such terrible taste in men.

🧚‍♀️ Story: Majo was born in America. Her mother died when she was young so her father decided to start a new life with Majo in Japan. She studied to be a hero, but she never dedicated herself to it because of the panic she felt in emergency situations. Feeling a failure, she used to draw in the parks. That's how she met Mirio, who saved her from some bullies. Helping her, Mirio noticed that Majo was drawing, so he asked if he could take a closer look at her drawings. Since then they became friends and usually go out to talk or take a walk around the city. Over time, their friendship grew and they became closer. Mirio motivated Majo to leave her fears behind and help people, being a hero rescue.

🧚‍♀️ Rock Control Her quirk allows her to manipulate stones, rocks and minerals. The bigger they are, the more effort they require. She can't manipulate them if they are part of someone's body or quirk.

🧚‍♀️ Trivia:

Majo's name, refers to someone "nice, attractive, good-looking" in Spanish. Her last name Pearce, means "rock".

Her hero name and costume, refer to the fairies because she likes them.

Majo is of Hispanic descent by her mother.

Mirio and Majo become a couple, marrying and having two kids, Mitsuo and Mio.

Majo's foreign features, accent, and habits are one of the things that Mirio likes about her.

Mirio was the first to confess and calls her his "light".

Majo loves star and bunny earrings and accessories.

Majo's dark brown hair and eyes match with her Earthen quirk.

Her favorite food is yakisoba with teriyaki sauce.

Her favorite color is lavender.

Majo is introverted but also kind and talkative.

Majo is a year older than Mirio.

So, with the comic on hiatus while I work on chapter two/sacrifice my will to live apartment hunting, I figured now was a great time to give a heartfelt shoutout to everyone who’s read and enjoyed it so far!

Like I said in my author’s note for 1-17, I check my statistics roughly once a week and I’m consistently blown away—there’s never a day where zero pages are viewed! Every single day, there’s somebody somewhere reading my comic! WHAT!!!

As a little bonus to hold you over until the comic comes back, I thought I’d share a bit of behind-the-scenes trivia about the creation of Sparks Fly.

Strictly speaking, the first character to be created was Eclipse, as I reworked her from my old WoF-sona. The first character created specifically for this project was Aster.

Of everyone I’ve designed so far, Velia has probably been through the most design changes—she’s had about three different designs iirc, and a different name for each one. Her current design is loosely based on a kingfisher.

The prize for the most drastic design change definitely goes to Ember—she was originally green and purple, if you can believe that! I ended up adapting her original color palette for a character you’ll meet in chapter eight (at least, according to my current outline)

I like designing characters based on toys, which is part of the reason for my current dragon shelf dilemma XD

This one inspired Oriel •w•

Sparks Fly owes its existence to my childhood love of Wings of Fire, but also to my current love of My Hero Academia! I first had the idea to make SF while I was doing some worldbuilding for a BNHA dragon AU and then realized “Hey, I could use this worldbuilding for an original story”.

Ironically enough, not a lot of that initial worldbuilding survived to the current version XD

I’ve known who Velia’s parents are longer than I’ve known who she herself is—I’m excited to see if you guys can figure out their identities!

Again, from the bottom of my heart, thank you so much for reading. It truly means the world to me that so many people are excited to see where my story goes, and I hope you all have as much fun reading it as I have in writing it so far!

The Tassel Pirates~

Captain: Advena "V"

Originally an Invader Zim oc

7"0, 18 years old, female

Ate the Kiji Kiji no mi, a paramecia which allows the user to control and create any type of cloth at will. She can change it's shape, size, stretch it, change it's textile, etc. She cannot control the components of cloth (such as yarn, threads, etc.) as well as cannot turn the cloth into something else that alters what it is (clothes, bags, etc.) She must stitch her cloth together by hand in order to shift it to something new.

Is a bilateral amputee, missing portions of both arms and naturally has no hands. Because of this, she uses her cloth as hands instead.

Is a Warlord and thus doesn't garner much traction with the marines.

Can use observation and armament haki.

Had a bounty of 473,000,000 that was frozen due to her title as a Warlord.

First mate/ Artillery: Dracule Vermelho

5"0, 18 years old, female

Has no devil fruit.

Illegitimate child of Dracule Mihawk.

Wields a segmented claymore, that can be broken down into multiple different weapons, including swords, daggers, etc.

She has her weapon as instead of having worked on her own sword techniques, Alexie simply copies the techniques of those she's fighting, and thus, needs to weild similar weapons to that of her opponent. She holds a copycat style in order to try and force fights into stalemates. She doesn't wish to be the world's best swordman, nor really cares to be known, but can't help and wonder how anyone can challenge anothers technique if they can't even master their own, so she tests them with their own techniques.

Can use observation, armament and conquerers haki.

Has a bounty of 762,000,000.

Doctor: Juuzou

Originally a BNHA oc

6"2, 31 years old, male

Ate the Karada Karada no mi, a special paramecia that allows the user to transform and manipulate their body down to its barest forms. They can shift their DNA/ appearance, swap their gender, give themselves animal parts, but it also allows the user to physically manipulate and alter their body such as splitting limbs, growing extra limbs, changing their size and shape, etc.

Despite being the doctor of the crew, Juno is also the most sickly of it due to his devil fruit. Juno's capacity to use his ability is very limited due to how quickly his body forgets it's natural form when he changes, and because of this, it leads to a lot of complications, both mentally and physically, when he attempts to shift back and forth.

Cannot use haki.

Has a bounty of 192,000,000.

Cook: Oda Yuujin

Originally a BNHA and Ghostbusters oc

8"4, 22 years old, male

Ate the mythical zoan Hito Hito no mi, Model: Rodefhiri a.k.a. The Boogieman. Given he was originally based off of The Real Ghostbusters Boogieman, I am using their version of the Boogieman's folklore, which was originally a monk named Rodefhiri, and therefore was human, making it a Hito model. His half form gives him goat legs, pointed ears, sharp teeth and claws. His full form causes his ears to turn to that of a goats, gives him longer arms that are unproportionate to his body, and a monstrous face and head as well as turns his skin white, his scleras yellow and his iris' red. While in his forms he can control and feed off of fear to grow stronger, as well as can bring people's fears to reality.

Is from the longarm tribe.

Can use observation haki.

Has a bounty of 900,000,000.

Navigator: Trivia Rose

Originally a BNHA oc

5"9, 23 years old, nonbinary

Ate the Unmei Unmei no mi, which is a paramecia that allows the user to see all the different possible futures one can achieve through touch. Specifically used Unmei here, as Unmei is the type of destiny that can be changed. So while Trivia can tell you your future, they can see all the different changes you can make and the outcomes that come from it. They use this to lead the crew in the best direction by the choices they make based off of what they see.

Wields a rapier with a twisted blade that resembles a unicorns horn and is incrested with diamonds.

Cannot use haki.

Has a bounty of 120,000,000.

Musician: Chonan

Originally a BNHA and Resident Evil oc

5"6, 28 years old, male (ftm)

Ate the Koe Koe no mi, a devil fruit that allows it's user to manipulate their voice to mimic/steal others. Chonan uses this not only to better his music, but it also brings great skill in manipulating and intimidating enemies, by being able to use the voices of larger figures, such as a marine admiral or high bounty pirates.

Can use observation and armament haki.

Has no bounty. (Is usually behind the scenes messing with voices and thus has not actually been placed yet as his own person.)

Treasurer: Tally

Originally a Homestuck Fantrolls oc

4"10, 16 years old, female

Has no devil fruit.

Is a lionfish fish-men. Because of this, she produces a natural venom that she can sting enemies with.

A severe kleptomaniac. Will steal anything with even the slightest shine, including things of little to no worth, like foil or broken glass.

Cannot use haki.

Has a bounty of 1,540,000.

Helmsman: "Angel"

Originally a Hazbin Hotel oc

5"8, 48 years old, nonbinary

Has no devil fruit.

Is a cyborg made from Hades' deceased wife, Maryam. Their mechanics were based off of Kuma and the Pacifistas, with Hades' on twists on the blueprints in order to better the project.

Despite Hades' attempts, Maryam's mind didn't stay intact, much like Kuma's, which now renders them an empty shell that runs the ship and fights when needed. Nothing more.

Cannot use haki.

Has a bounty of 230,000,000.

Shipwright: Hades

Originally a Hazbin Hotel and Resident Evil oc

8"0, 50 years old, male

Has no devil fruit.

Was originally a marine scientist that worked directly beneath Vegapunk and because of this, garners a lot of intelligence in regards to the man's studies, as well as expanding the research on his own to aid his team.

Can control observation and armament haki.

Has a bounty of 845,000,000.

MHA on Twitter - Part 1 (Manga & Spin-Offs)

Other than endless shipping wars and discourse, Twitter is also a genuinely great source of information on My Hero Academia - because a lot of the Japanese creators involved are active there.  As several people have asked me for the sources I use for my posts, I figured someone may find it useful if I summarize them here. 

Manga

The starting point is of course Horikoshi’s official Twitter account.  He uses it basically only to post his Twitter sketches and retweet (very selectively) some promotion. As far as I know, this is Horikoshi’s only social media presence and he doesn’t make media appearances. @makeste​ made a compilation of different Horikoshi interviews. 

@myheroacademia is the official Twitter of the manga, though they are terrible at putting out info, like volume cover art first. But still, it is a useful resource. They retweet the BNHA-info from  @jump_henshubu (which is the official account of Weekly Shonen Jump)

#ヒロアカ is the main hashtag of all things MHA. 

@shonenjump  is the account for the official EN publication by VIZ.  

Shonen Jump News - Unofficial  is a fan account with tons of information about upcoming content, author comments, sales data, etc. 

The EN translator, Caleb Cook has a Twitter account where he used to post his chapter trivia, but stopped it due to fandom drama. The account is now inactive. 

Spin-Offs

Another account worth following is Akiyama Yoco’s (creator of Team-Up Mission, and longtime assistant of Horikoshi). Team-Up Mission is published monthly in Saikyo Jump (Twt:  @SAIKYO_JUMP) and Akiyama has been lately drawing also a lot of the promotional art. In her Twitter, she does lovely promo sketches, both for TUM and for the main Manga. 

The recently finished Vigilante spin-off creators  Hideyuki Furuhashi and  Betten Court  (@bet10co10) also both have Twitter account. Though now with the series ending, they will probably moving onto new projects. 

BNHA Smash!  was created also an ex-assistant of Horikoshi, Hirofumi Neda  (@dorori_k) who is also very active on Twitter, though is not involved with BNHA anymore.
