favourite rwby's allusions?
Hi,
thank you so much for this ask! I love RWBY's allusions and talking about them is always a pleasure! So, I have currently 4 allusions I would call faves. I love many others too, but these 4 are kind of special for me:
Cinder Fall - Cinderella
Cinder's allusion is at the same time obvious and very layered. The key to understand it is Midnight (best written episode of the series imo). There, Cinder's fairy-tale gets inverted. She is a slave who finds her prince (Rhodes), but is ultimately failed and left in the darkness. At the same time, Cinder's background helps us read her allusion in the main storyline. As a matter of fact Cinder's story is about the cycle of abuse. She is stuck in it, so her fairy tale keeps repeating and won't have a happy ending until she interrupts the cycle. As a result we have:
Salem as a combination between the Evil Stepmother (Madame) and the Fairy Godmother (Rhodes)
Ruby as the Prince (a better version of Rhodes)
Emerald and Mercury as Cinder's slippers (the embodyment of the twin swords of her childhood)
Salem is the Evil Stepmom masked as a powerful Fairy Godmother, who gives Cinder a new pair of shiny slippers (the Maiden Powers). Still, they are only a tool to manipulate our Cinderella. Ruby is instead the Huntress who dances with Cinder and will save her with her personal silver slippers (her silver eyes). Finally, Emerald and Mercury are the two sides of Cinder, her two slippers who will lead the Prince (Ruby and RWBY) to her.
Key to understand the allusion- The episode Midnight (+ the Beacon Dance tbh)
Favourite motif- Emerald and Mercury as the slippers
Why it is a fave- It balances its relevance to the plot with strong imagery and metaphors. So, it is easy to notice, but it leaves much to discover once you start analyzing it
Weiss Schnee - Snowhite
Weiss's allusion plays with the idea of "royal test":
White is cold and always yearning, burdened by a royal test.
Which is nothing, but a trial to see if Weiss is fit to become Queen. In fairy-tale symbolism, a princess becomes queen when she grows up and self-actualizes. So, Weiss's story is one where she blooms into herself. Initially, she is given two opposite examples of "queens":
Jacques is the Evil Queen of Snowhite
Winter is the Snow Queen of Andersen's story
Weiss's arc is about realizing she is neither. She is instead her own queen:
She does so through integrating the different characters of her fairy tale within herself. She is Snowhite, as such she is made of all the characters that make her story:
She risks to become an Evil Queen
She is an unsure Huntress
She is the Prince who saves herself
She is Snowhite, who grows into a Queen
All these sides are expressed through her summons:
The Queen Lancer is the Evil Queen who gets dethroned by the Good Queen (Snowhite) in the end
The Boarbatusk is the Hunter who kills a boar to help Snowhite
The Knight is the Prince who saves Snowhite
The Nevermore is the crow turned into dove, which announces Snowhite's final resurrection
So, the summons are different characters of Snowhite. Moreover, each character fits a different Jungian Archetype:
The Queen is the Persona (the mask she wears)
The Hunter is the shadow (what she represses)
The Prince is the animus (the masculine inside the feminine)
Snowhite is the self (the sum of all other archetypes)
In short, Weiss plays all the characters of her story and her semblance is used to metaphorically comment her arc and tie her fairy-tale to the main plot in a symbolic way. It might seem Weiss's story isn't following Snowhite's. Still, if one focuses on Weiss's inner journey it turns out she has already gone through the majority of the Grimms' fairy tale. Only a finale is missing, which I think will crown Weiss's arc with an apple. (I need an apple)
Key to understand the allusion- Weiss's summons are Snowhite's characters
Favourite motif- Snowhite's characters fitting different Jungian Archetypes
Why it is a fave - It is very Jungian and psychological. Weiss's Snowhite loosely follows her journey in Remnant, but really shines when it is applied to Weiss's internal evolution
Yang XiaoLong - Goldilocks and the Three Bears
Yang's allusion is built on the idea of hot, cold and just right, which is declined in three different ways:
Red is hot, blue is cold and purple is just right. These colors comment Yang's arc and semblance. In particular, she is usually the just right (purple eyes), but when she uses her power she becomes too hot (red eyes)
Ruby is red, Weiss is blue and Blake is purple. This makes them Yang's hot, cold and just right. Together, they are the three bears of the fairy - tale, who welcome Yang in their found family
Yang is going through a process to find her just right. Still, before she succeeds she has to go through the too hot and too cold. In particular...
The Vale's arc is Yang's too hot:
Yang: Strawberry Sunrise. No ice. Oh, and one of those little umbrellas.
Yang goes to look for Raven and orders a hot beverage (no ice). She ends her search by finding Ruby (her hot bear). At the end of the arc she explodes in flames and loses an arm.
The Mistral's arc is Yang's too cold:
Yang: A water. It's hot out.
Yang goes to look for Raven and orders a cold beverage. She ends her search by finding Weiss (her cold bear). At the end of the arc she keeps it cool while fighting Adam and wins.
After this process, she has found her just right:
Still, I am sure Vacuo will explore this idea further and lead Yang's to her finale and truest "just right" as a character.
Key to understand the allusion - The Yellow Trailer sets up the metaphor with its different layers
Favourite motif - Red, blue and purple as hot, cold and just right
Why it is a fave - It uses dialogues and lines as motifs much more than other allusions and I find it neat. Especially because Yang is pun-girl and linked to knowledge, so I think this choice fits a lot.
Emerald Sustrai - Aladdin
Emerald's allusion is one that caught me off guard and now I love it! The key idea is that Emerald is both Aladdin and the Geenie. As a matter of fact Cinder tricks Emerald with the promise to fulfill her wish only to turn her into a slave. In general, the key characters and motif in Em's allusion are:
Cinder and Salem as the 2 geenies that promise to fulfill Emerald's wishes
Cinder and Salem as the 2 Evil Wizards that abuse Emerald
The Cave of Wonders as the cycle of abuse
The Lamp (the Relic of Knowledge) and the Ring (Em's own semblance) as magical tools that help our Aladdin out
In general, Emerald's design and basic idea tie with Disney-Aladdin's famous line:
"Only one may enter here, one whose worth lies far within... the Diamond in the Rough" (Aladdin, 1992)
Emerald is a precious gem covered in dirt, but with time she will find her inner value and discover what she truly wants. As a matter of fact her allusion thematically explores the differences between wants vs needs. Emerald starts by following an illusory wish (Cinder), but is slowly realizing her true wish and need (RWBYJNRO and Mercury). Differently from others' allusions, hers is just at the beginning and needs some kind of climatic conclusion. I am looking forward to ti! (Bonus if it ties with Mercury's headcanon allusion I came up with :P)
Key to understand the allusion - Cinder and Salem playing the parts of the geenies while referencing respectively a ring and a lamp
Favourite motif - Emerald is a gem in the rough
Why it is a fave - I love the potential of how the geenies and the wish imagert can be used in Emerald and Mercury's arcs. It can be very very powerful!
These are my 4 faves, but of course there are other allusions I love! It is just I have analyzed them less, so it is as if I am lacking a full picture. They are:
Ruby's LRRH- I love how it is intertwined with the Alice's one in volume 9. Still, I think there is much more to it.
Penny's Pinocchio- It is one of the most powerful allusions tbh and I would like to analyze it properly one day. Its ending being an inversion of the original fairy-tale is perfect. Here it is Penny (Pinocchio), who creates Winter (The Blue Fairy).
Jaune's Jeanne D'Arc - The Jaunidice's arc sets up this allusion brilliantly. The way it ties Pyrrha with Jaune's inspiration and personal God and how it manifests itself each arc with a miracle Jaune witnesses or performs is very powerful.
I also like Blake's Beauty and Beast's allusion, but I did not have to discover it slowly and it came to me as pretty obvious. So, I like it a little less.
I have yet to think about Ren and Nora's allusions, but I am interested in them.
Finally, I am super interested in Mercury's allusion and I am curious about it. I think its set-up is great and I wanna see how it plays out.

The duo of Jaune and Neo had paid a visit to Saphron and her wife Terra, seeing as Jaune and Neo were in town for a mission. Jaune decided to go see his sister.
When they arrived, they were greeted with Saphron, inviting them in as she told them that Terra went out for some groceries and that she would return soon.
They gathered around the kitchen table as Saphron gave a coffee to her brother and Neo as Adrian just played with a ball in his high chair.
" So how long are you guys gonna be in town?" Asked Saphron to Jaune, who sipped some of his coffee.
"Probably just today, we're on a mission to eliminate some Grimm out in some abandoned foyer a little past the western exit of Argus" Jaune said before pointing to Neo who was busy putting tons of sugar in her coffee.
"Plus, this little gremlin here wants to get back to Vale soon. Apparently, a fancy big wig party is coming about, and Jacques Schnee should be their, " Jaune said as Neo just drank her coffee and hummed happily.
"Oooh, I see," as Saphron studied Jaune's girlfriend, seeing a slight mischievous glint in her eyes and before Saphron could ask anything else her scroll rang looking at the device, she could see her wife calling her.
"Hi, hun could you come help me with the groceries?" Terra said to her.
"On it, hey Jaune, mind coming with me?" Saphron asked, to which Jaune nodded, and they both got up from the table as well as Neo, but Saphron stopped her.
"Could you look after Adrian for these next ten minutes?" She asked, and Neo looked at Saphron like a deer in headlights as she froze immediately on the spot.
"Uh Jaune, is she okay?" Asked Saphron as Jaune just walked up to the tiny assassin.
"Neo is just fine. She's just a little shy," Jaune said with a hint of amusement as Neo just glared ot him.
"Come on, sis, let's go help Terra" he said as both blondes walked out the kitchen and out the main door.
*Wait! Don't leave me here with -* Neo thoughts were halted at the sound of the main door closing as suddenly a ball bounced at her leg, and Neo's head snapped back to Adrian, who had a tilt to his head.
Neo just stumbled up to the high chair as she looked at Adrian, who just stared back at the mute.
Neo just looked away, uncomfortable, unsure of what to do.
"What do little kids like!?" She didn't freaking know!
Roman just taught her pickpocketing and sleight of hand tricks when she was young!
And there was NO WAY IN HELL she was gonna do the latter lest she suffer Saphrons wrath.
Suddenly, an idea popped into her head!
Funny faces! Yeah, yeah, like all the kid comedy movies do! Excellent thinking Neo!
Looking back at Adrian, Neo held one hand over her head before swiping it down and, using her semblance, changed her face.
Unfortunately, Neo didn't know too many people with funny faces, so the first thing that popped into her head wasn't anything human.
It was a Grimm.
A boarbatusk as a matter of fact.
Unfortunately, it had the wrong effect Neo wanted.
Adrian cried.
Neo flailed her arms at hearing Adrian cry as she looked around at what was causing him to cry. When she looked in the reflection of one of the hall mirrors, she could see her error.
Quickly, she dispelled her semblance as Adrian continued crying as Neo bit into her knuckle as an imaginary scenario played into her head.
"She made Adrian cry she is pure evil!" Came the voice of imaginary Saphron as she held her crying son.
"You fiend how could you!?" Came the voice of Terra as she went to console her wife.
"Why Neo!? Why!?" Came her boyfriends cry as he dropped to the dramtically as if he was in pain before looking at her.
"I guess we aren't meant to be after all..." The active imagination stops their as Neo let's out a silent scream as she paces back and forth, trying to figure out how to stop Adrian from crying, she was so distracted she didn't see the ball that Adrian had roll right under one of her heels until it was too late.
Neo slipped on the ball, sending her falling to the floor in what could only be described as comical.
Neo had birds flying around her head as she sat up on the floor.
"Ehehe!"
Neo looked up from her sitting position to the high chair as she noticed something new.
Their was no more crying, it was...it was replaced with something else...something different.
"Ehehaha!"
Neo peeked her head up and saw a wondrous sight.
Adrian was no longer crying.
He was now laughing!
Oh, happy days!
"Gotta keep the kid laughing, think Neo, think!" What could she do that could keep a kid entertained!
Another light bulb went off as an idea popped into her head.
She snapped her fingers as she mentally patted herself on the back.
"It's been a long while since I did this, so I might be a little rusty" thought Neo as she looked at Adrian's laughing face as an odd sense of peace and happiness flowed through her.
Checking to see if anyone was in the room and seeing that the coast was clear, Neo looked at Adrian before holding up her index finger as if telling him to wait.
Suddenly, before Adrian's eyes, Neo changed, and she was her normal attire. Now wearing a black and white stripped shirt, she had on black pants with suspenders with some black boots, a pink scarf, Romans bowler hat still on her head, and her face was painted white with black liner.
Neo had transformed herself into a mime.
'I knew those mime classes were worth something other than helping me kill someone!'
Neo looked at Adrian with a wave as she then began to pantomime.
She held on to what looked like a box she picked up from the ground, Adrian looked curiously as Neo sat the box to the ground, before going back to her original spot and 'picking up' another box and putting it in the same spot, she repeated this process a few times each time she would place the next box higher and higher as if she was stacking it.
At last, Neo wiped a bead of sweat from her brow as Adrian clapped in joy, obviously enjoying this.
Neo then 'looked' at the tall stack of boxes before she started to climb' them and Adrian marveled at what Neo was doing, Neo made her way to the tippy top it was stacked short enough to where her short stature could fully stand a top the boxes.
Adrian just clapped and giggled in joy and the warm feeling Neo felt before magnified.
'Keep the show going just a bit more,' Neo thought, wanting to keep the boy happy as suddenly the boxes from underneath her gaveway and Neo comically feel down, safely, from the boxes, the action earning Neo another laugh from Adrian as she smiled as well, tapping her chin she thought of her next trick. She looked at the ball at her feet.
She motioned for Adrian to watch her as she bent down and grabbed the ball with one hand and tried to lift it up, only for her to fall on her butt as the ball did not move an inch.
She tried to lift said ball again, struggling and failing over and over. The scene was hilarious if anyone was looking in, but heartwarming as the boy was just enjoying himself so much.
Soon, Neo, struggling with the heavy ball, had managed to lift it high enough to set it back onto Adrian's high chair.
Adrian looked at the ball in his chair and back at Neo, who looked at him, fanning herself before flexing her arms as if to show Adrian that she was strong.
Adrian looked at Neo and back at his ball before grabbing said ball and picking it up with ease.
Neo looked on with fake shock as she playfully fell to the floor as Adrian once again laughed in joy.
Neo just smiled, enjoying the sound of this small kids laughter.
*click*
Neo's eyes widened as she reverted back to her normal look as she looked behind her to see her boyfriend, with a smile on his face as he held his scroll out.
"Awe, this is gonna be my new contact picture for you-ooof!" He didn't get say much as a blur of pink and brown tackled him out of sheer embarrassment, Jaune was lucky to set the bag of groceries down as he was sent to the floor past a confused Terra and Saphron, who just peeked their heads into the kitchen to see a laughing Adrian.

"Aww, but it's cute, my little mime assassin"
*...*
"Babe...what are you doing with Hush... sweetie meant it as a compliment! Ahhhh!"

Evolution of White Knight in RWBY (Volume 1)
To begin our tale of their relationship evolution, we must begin from Volume 1. Episode 1.03 “The Shining Beacon, Pt. 2” had the two “meetings.” Weiss, sarcastically, pointed to Jaune while talking about “cute boys,” something Jaune perks up at. He attempts to flirt with her, but she is not in the mood. Not a good start for this relationship.
Episode 1.04 “The First Step” Jaune interrupts a discussion between Pyrrha and Weiss, flirting with the latter girl. Weiss shows annoyance at being flirted with, and it’s in this episode that Jaune drops his nickname for the girl “Snow Angel.” Although he flirts with Pyrrha a bit, Jaune’s main focus is Weiss, especially trying to get on the same team as her. Their discussion ends with Pyrrha throwing a spear at him that lodges him to the wall. A discussion with Yang seconds later reveals that he was following his father’s footsteps about “all women look for is confidence.” This indicates his good intentions, if only a bit wayward.
Episode 1.05 “The First Step, Pt. 2” has a brief moment between the two. While Weiss is walking away from Ruby, annoyed to be her partner under Ozpin’s rule of the first person you make eye contact with is your partner for the duration of your time at Beacon Academy, she comes across Jaune who is stuck to a tree thanks to Pyrrha. He waves at her weakly, but she turns on her heel and returns to Ruby, accepting the girl as the lesser of two evils.
Episode 1.08 “Players and Pieces” is when the two get another moment together. As Weiss falls from the sky after jumping off a Nevermore, Jaune sees his opportunity and leaps from his place in the tree, catching her mid-air. He attempts for a suave, “Just dropping in?”, but, in Looney Tunes style, the two fall from the sky, Weiss landing on Jaune with a mocking, “My hero.”
Episode 1.10 “The Badge and the Burden, Pt. 2” has another very brief moment between the two. After Weiss defeats the Boarbatusk in class and stalks away angrily, Jaune makes a comment about what is up with her. This could just be Miles trying to get Jaune in every episode (he joked about this in Volume 1’s director commentary), or it can be seen as Jaune interested in Weiss’ state of mind.
Episode 1.14 “Forever Fall, Pt. 2” has Weiss preparing to intervene in a fight between Jaune and an Ursa Major until Pyrrha stops her. Whether Weiss was worried for Jaune’s safety or just wanted to kill the Grimm is up for debate, but I like to think she was worried about Jaune dying (especially because she doesn’t hold a high opinion on his fighting capabilities).

Ruby: “Okay, so then we got on top of the train right? ‘Cause there’s no way we could leave the Grimm fighting to the train’s defenses and just those 2 huntsmen!”
Weiss: “Especially because, well, let’s just say they didn’t exactly inspire confidence when we first met them. And then their performance only confirmed our suspicions.”
Ruby: “Yeah, they weren’t too good, but we did awesome! The things attacking the train were manticores and Sphinxes; a whole pack or swarm or. . . Penny what’s the correct term?”
Penny: “As they are flying Grimm, it would usually be considered a flock.”
Ruby: “A whole flock of them! I had never fought them before! Their huge fangs were so cool! They were. . . Just like this:”
Ruby, before Weiss can realize what she’s doing and stop her, puts chop sticks in her mouth
Ruby: “Like this: RAWR! I read they can go through a foot of steel!”
Weiss: “Ruby! We’ve all fought them before now and we’re in public! Where are your manners?”
Winter: “Hahaha. . . Weiss, you said that it was a pain to get Ruby through your Grimm studies class. She seems rather interested in them.”
Weiss: “Her interest is directly correlated to how cool it looks. Just try to get her to learn boarbatusk herding behavior.”
Penny: “Really that’s actually a rather fascinating thing!”
Ruby: Anyway back to the story! So: At first we could handle them pretty easy; I cut the first one down and in half with one swipe after it went past Yang and Blake!”
Weiss: “After which you decided was the perfect time to pose and taunt the Grimm. So I had to save your butt when one came from behind you.”
Ruby: “Hehe. . . I knew no matter what I would be fine because you were there! You always save me, all of us actually! Everyone owes you so much!”
Weiss: “Oh she’s exaggerating. We all always help each other when we can. . . You saved me right after that remember? There was a tunnel coming, and we were running back to the hatch, when I was hit by a fireball from one of the Grimm.”
Ruby: “And I grabbed you by the wrist and petal bursted you into the train! The red and blue spiral we made was so cool!”
Penny: “If you saved each other then it seems like you’re even one to one!”
Ruby: “Maybe if it was only that! But Weiss saved us all, and me specifically, a lot later too! Like when we were still on the train a fireball took out the tracks and Weiss’s glyphs made it so we didn’t crash as hard! She probably saved us all!”
Weiss: “I didn’t help that much; we still crashed.”
Winter: “A full train? That’s very powerful for your glyphs Weiss. I’m impressed.”
Weiss: “It was only a few empty cars because we had already detached most of it.”
Winter: “Still my point stands.”
Ruby: “And later when we were fighting Cordovian and her mech, sorry about the whole. . . All of that by the way,”
Winter: “You did what you had to. And anyway. . . And. . . Let’s say there’s a reason that woman is stationed where she is.”
Penny: “Even if you all collectively broke 137 laws and ordinances, which would result in almost assured life imprisonment if it was ever prosecuted.”
Weiss: “How very comforting.”
Ruby: “So anyway when she tried to blast us the canon on that thing, Weiss put up a rock wall and saved us from getting blasted!”
Winter: “Thats a rather high degree excessive force.”
Penny: “And against regulations for use of that machine.”
Weiss: “Thats what we were saying! Except the regulations part. But Ruby; before that you saved all of us from the apathy, terrible things by the way, they drain you like one of Father’s self promotion parties, with your eyes. And you almost stopped the leviathan.”
Ruby: “Sure, but against Cordovian she saved me from falling twice! And it was only with your lancer that I was able to do that! Admit it Weiss: you’re a life saver. Literally.”
Weiss: “Well, I cant exactly let you get hurt if I can avoid it, can I? I like all of us, but especially you too much.”
Ruby: “And I’ll always be thankful.”
Penny: “When we fought Cinder, Winter and I saved each other too!”
Ruby: “Ooo! Tell us! We haven’t heard enough about your fight!”
Weiss: “Yes, please do.”
Penny: “So when I was with Fria and. . . She was passing on. . . Cinder has gotten back inside because Fria wasn’t making a wall of cold anymore! She sent her Grimm arm towards us but Winter jump in and cut it off just in time!”
Winter: “And that’s how I got into the fight that almost, and would have, killed me you two not showed up; because by that time my aura was already broken. . . From when Penny saved me earlier. . .”
Weiss: “What happened?”
Winter: “Cinder pushes both me and Penny through the walls, so we were fighting in the air. Penny and Cinder can fly of course, so I was using my manticore summon,”
Ruby: “You have a manticore summon!? That’s so cool! Weiss you need to make one!”
Weiss: “SSSSHH!”
Winter: “We tried to double team her; flying at her from two directions. But she was smarter than I had hoped. . . When I was attacking alone she destroyed my summon with her swords, then sent a fireball to destroy my aura.”
Weiss: Gasp
Winter: “I would have assuredly fallen to my death below. . . But instead of following Cinder. . . Penny saved me.”
Penny: “Yet the first thing you did was scold me for it.”
Winter: “I thought we may have just lost everything to Cinder. . . In that case my life really doesn’t matter.”
Penny, putting her hand over Winter’s: “Winter, I said this back then, and I mean it maybe even more now: you’re life does matter. At least to me. And it always will.”
Winter looked at Penny, who’s green eyes stared back. Sometimes she would forget that Penny was technically a machine; because she could see what was behind all of the sensors and cameras
A soul
A soul that really did love her. And one she loved back
Leaning forward, she was reminded yet again how human Penny’s lips were too
Ruby, staring at this adorable display: “. . . Weiss. . . Remember how we said we’d thank each other later, on the train?”
Weiss, a little uncomfortable at her sister making out in front of her: “Y-Yeah, I do. Why-“
Ruby takes a soft hold of Weiss, and looks into her eyes for a second. Before closing hers, and leaning in
The kiss caught Weiss off guard, but after a millisecond she melted in Ruby’s liplock embrace, and returned the favor
After a few moments of being lost in bliss, Ruby pulled back
And Weiss regained her normal senses
Weiss: “RUBY ROSE! What have I told you about making out with me in public!? I explicitly told you not to embarrass me I front of my sister!!”
Ruby: “But you still seemed to enjoy it!”
Weiss: “T-that doesn’t mean anything!”
Winter, having gotten done with her own kiss: “Weiss, calm down, please give the girl a break. It’s just because she loves you. . . And don’t think it should be embarrassing in respect to me: I’m happy you have someone like Ruby.”

Ironwood: What the hell are you doing?!
Whitley: I want to join up with you guys!
Ironwood: Yeah? Well, my boot wants to join up with your ass, and I'm about to throw 'em a shotgun wedding! Now beat it! This isn't Pumpkin Pete's Pumpkin Patch, and we're not shopping in the junior's section!
Whitley: I DARE you to find someone more qualified than me! I've been training under my sister my entire life! I've been to every Kingdom known to Remnant, including the Grimmlands, Mariejois, and Anor Londo! I've been shot at, stabbed, poisoned, cudgeled, Beringeled, Beowolfed, Boarbatusked- You name it, I've done it, and I'm still standing! And if that doesn't sound like the resume of a top-notch, super secret agent, then I don't know what is.
Marrow: (Stands, Slow claps)
Ironwood: (Throws phone at Marrow, Incapacitates him) Alright, you win, kiddo. Specialist Ebi!

Altered Destiny

Glynda Goodwitch's breath hitched as she saw the massive boarbatusk pacing along the top edge of the cliff. The shine of reflected light of two pieces of easily recognizable pieces of equipment made her heart race. Were they too late? With a sudden snarl as the bullhead slowly descended to get a better view of the area, Glynda lashed out with her semblance.
A purple light surrounded the massive grimm, lifting it into the air before dashing it against the ground, instantly turning it into a smear of inky ichor. Moments later the bullhead landed and Glynda followed by the medical team disembarked, and began their search. Using the tracker on their own, scrolls then zeroed in on the signal. A signal coming from the bottom of the chasm.
Glynda: No! No! No!
As Glynda's mind fell into her greatest fear, that of losing a student under her care, the EMT's moved into action. The bullhead lifted off, and then moved into a hover over the chasm, before two members of the rescue team repelled out of the air vehicle and down towards the source of the signal.

Glynda met the remainder of JNPR in the waiting room of the infirmary. Cutting them off from just rushing into the room that Jaune was currently occupying. The trio looked up at her, with genuine concern, Miss Nikos eyes the most telling. Glynda could tell she had been crying, the redness and puffiness tell-tale signs.
Glynda: Jaune is okay, and safe but in a coma.
Pyrrha: What... what happened?
Glynda: We still need Jaune to tell us, but what we can figure is he used the launch pads to go into the forest for some reason, and ran into some serious trouble. I must repeat, Jaune is okay, just currently unresponsive.
Nora: When can we see him?
Glynda: In a few minutes. I have a few things to inform you of, before you can. So, please take seats.
The trio moved and took seats on the uncomfortable hard plastic chairs that lined the walls of the waiting room. Once they had settled, and return thier full attention to Glynda, she spoke.
Glynda: We are no sure what has happened, and I am going to be speaking with the headmaster about the pads being active, but I must let you know... we found Jaune at the bottom of the chasm, surrounded by blood.
Ren: I thought you said he was okay? A drop like that should have killed him.
Glynda: The doctors believe that thanks to his massive aura reserves, he was able to survive the fall. Now, while that is a plausible scenario, what is not understood is how he suffered no injuries even though he was surrounded by a rather significant amount of blood.
Nora: So he was hurt?
Glynda: Yes, he was at one point, but upon our arrival we found him whole and breathing, just unresponsive. But that is not the end of the uncharacteristic situation.
Pyrrha: How did he manage to fall into the chasm?
Glynda: We found a rather large boarbatusk nearby, we think it knocked him over the edge. We disposed of it, and then set about securing Jaune. Who is now being thoroughly examined.
Ren: So he survived... which is explainable, but you said uncharacteristic situation. What do you mean?
Glynda: It is about the condition of him when we found him. His body has been altered, and we have no clue as to how.
Pyrrha: What do you mean?
Glynda: It is perhaps better that I show you. It would be faster than trying to explain it. Please follow me.
The trio rose from their seats and followed Professor Goodwitch into the main hallway of the infirmary. She led them in silence past many empty rooms, til they stood before the closed door of the last room. Glynda turned to regard the three before opening the door and stepping aside to allow them to enter.
What they saw caused them all to stop in shock. Their eyes wide and mouths agape.
Pyrrha: How? What? This is not Jaune!
Nora: Who is this?
Ren: (Turns to look at Professor Goodwitch) Is this some type of sick joke? Where is Jaune?
Glynda: This is not a joke. We have been running every test we can think of. We have checked her fingerprints, blood matching and are even doing a DNA sequencing and Aura Pattern analysis. So far, everything we've done tells us this is Jaune Arc.
Pyrrha: But...
Nora: That's a girl! That's not our Fearless Leader!
Glynda: I don't know what else to tell you. Or how to prove this is who we say it is. But this is how we found Jaune at the bottom of the chasm.
Pyrrha: This is not possible. I know people can change genders, but not magically like this! I mean, Jaune was a he this morning!
Glynda: Again I don't know what to tell you, and until Jaune wakes up and tells us what happened, we don't have any answers but what the tests are telling us.
Ren: Any idea when that may happen?
Glynda: The doctors are not sure, they are hoping because Jaune's body is apparently unharmed that it will be sooner rather than later.
Glynda watched as the trio slowly took control of their shock and apprehension and moved further into the room. Soon they had surrounded Jaune's bed.
Glynda: I'll leave you alone. If anything happens, or Jaune wakes up please use the call button.
Pyrrha: Yes professor.
Glynda gently closed the door behind her, giving JNPR the privacy they needed.

Magical Girl Weiss
RWBY takes inspiration from many different genres to the point each girl embodies a famous archetype in the anime industry:
Ruby is the idealistic shonen protagonist that can inspire everyone else
Yang is the powerful shonen protagonist that fights her way through problems (Goku)
Blake is the inversion of a harem protagonist, but also a ninja in fighting style (Naruto)
What about Weiss? She is Remnant Magical Girl:
Everyone is entitled to their own sorrow, for the heart has no metrics or forms of measure. And all of it… irreplaceable.
Her Trailer opens up by praising the irreplaceable power of the heart and her glyphs materialize metaphors of her inner world.
Weiss's abilities are rather layered, but so far she can:
Use her rapier as a wand, so that she can cast magic with her dust and glyphs
Summon avatars who fight for her
Before volume 9 started, I was thinking an interesting evolution of this would be if Weiss started to use her avatars in a more dynamic way, which she does in Rude, Red and Royal:
It would be very cool if Weiss started to summon attributes of her avatars to combine with herself and others. Just like a magical girl transforms herself when she fights, Weiss could acquire wings, swords or spears depending on the situation. A mini magical trasformation, if you want:
It would tie thematically, as well, since Weiss's avatars are parts of who she is and by transferring their abilities on herself, she would symbolically integrate with them more.
Speaking of integration, we got this beautiful shot:
Weiss's Nevermore summon is coming together, but it is still not complete:
She has summoned the Nevermore's wings. It is meaningful she succeeds here because the Chess Fight is clearly meant to call back to RWBY's first fight against the Nevermore. It shows how far the team has come and the Nevermore is symbolic of RWBY as a whole, so it fits.
She has yet to summon the whole thing and I am interested to see when it will happen. So far, each of Weiss's summonings has played an important role in her arc. In particular, the Knight and the Queen Lancer have represented Weiss's resurrections. I am expecting the Nevermore to be the same, especially since Weiss "died" last volume when she fell with the others.
The Nevermore's glyph combines all the other ones.
It has snowflakes, like Weiss's simplest glyph and the Boarbatusk's one:
It has swords, like the Knight's:
It has spears, like the Queen Lancer's:
To all of this, the Nevermore's glyph adds wings.
This is very cool because it can easily tie with a Jungian interpretation of Weiss's avatars:
Weiss's summons can be linked to Jungian archetypes, aka collective ideas theorized by psychologist Carl Jung to explain how human mind works. The truth of this theory is unimportant. What matters is that it is widely used in literature.
They are:
The persona - how one appears to the outside
The shadow - what is buried deep inside and repressed
The anima/animus -the feminine part of a man and the masculine part of a woman- It represents a persons's duality
The self - it incorporates all the other archetypes and represents the person as a whole
In Weiss's case, we have:
The Queen singing to the mirror on a stage as Weiss's persona.
The Huntress fighting in the darkness for her freedom as Weiss's shadow (the shadow is also called inner beast hence the Boarbatusk).
The Princess trying to integrate with the Knight/Prince as the Anima/Animus.
All together, they make the self aka Snowhite.
Weiss's growth starts with the shadow (the Hunter/the Boarbatusk) shattering Weiss's Queen persona and goes on with the Anima/Animus (The Knight/Queen) integratiion.
Weiss initially awakens the Knight within herself and fights side by side with him. Later on, she is able to integrate with the Queen and summons the Queen Lancer, which is nothing, but a synthesis of her 2 parts. The Grimm is both a Queen and a Lancer (a kind of Knight) because this duality lies into Weiss herself.
In summary, Weiss's avatars represent:
The Boarbatusk > The shadow
The Arma Gigas > The animus
The Queen Lancer > The persona
All together they make the self, which will probably be represented by the Nevermore:
Our Snowhite is really a Snow Angel deep inside!

Neo finds herself facing off many grimm, after killing most and defeating them she didn’t notice a large boarbatusk that lived, had caught her off guard and now the boar like Grimm had the chance to breed the girl, as perhaps become her mate.
Neo grunted and looked behind her, the boarbatusk was large, but sleek. Despite the size it wasn't the normal armored, spiky, shell, but smooth and more hairy. She thought about stabbing it...
But honestly she was impressed. This Grimm was big but quick, and silent. Well...
She spread her legs, anchoring herself. This beast had impressed her once, she would give him a chance, ONE chance, to impress her again. If it did good, an attack boar could be useful. And if not, slitting it throat would not be a challenge.
But his sizable spiraling dick certainly gave her hope.

Voice returns to find that her mother has become a happy huntress

Weiss quietly walked through the streets of Mantle, no longer sure what she was looking for. It had been a long two months since making her way back to Atlas, and visiting home had only left her with questions that no one seemed to be able to answer. Willow was missing with only a rumor pointing to where she was, Jacques had a stranglehold on Mantle from the SDC with Whitley under him, and Klein was holding together what was left of the staff at the manor. But after hours of searching, she still had nothing to prove that any of the rumors about her mother were true.
“Just say the word and I can help you look for her,” Blake said over Weiss’s scroll. “Yang and I are in Argus so its not like we’re that far away to help.”
Weiss sighed and stopped as she waited for a few vehicles to pass before crossing the street. “I have to do this on my own. Besides, arent you both supposed to be spying on Ruby? Ever since we graduated-”
“We’ll handle her, but we’re here for you too.”
“I’ll be fine.”
“Alright, just let us know if you need us.”
Weiss hung up her call and sat down on a bench, watching a few people pass by on the streets as she rested. Everything seemed to blend around her as she spaced out a bit, trying to think where Willow could be. The only rumor she had to go off of was a summoned grimm in district five before disappearing, almost like it vanished like a ghost. And no one has been able to confirm that sighting.
The lights on the streets started to change to red as the grimm sirens started to go off. Weiss reached for her weapon as she stood up, waiting for the grimm to make their way down the streets as the civilians started to make their way into the nearby buildings. She frowned as the first of the grimm started to make their way down the streets, a few sabyrs followed by a megoliath. At least she knew how the grimm managed to make it this deep without getting stopped. Though, before she could create a glyph to wall off the grimm, she watched a familiar summoned boarbatusk slam into one of the sabyrs.
“May! Fiona! Take care of the megoliath. Joanna and Willow, get rid of those sabyrs!”
Weiss watched as the Happy Huntresses and her mother rush into action after Robyn called out her plan. All she could do was stand still as she watched her mother work, creating glyphs to hold the sabyrs down and using her summon as Joanna kept the rest of the grimm from leaving the streets. Even Fiona and May with Roby’s help seemed to be able to keep the Megoliath at bay until the rest of grimm were dealt with.
May slammed her staff into the foot of the megoliath, glancing over to Willow as she took care of the last sabyr. “We need an ice glyph!”
Willow used her old saber to point her glyphs just before the grimm, creating an ice wall with her glyphs and dust to keep the megolaith from going forward. “Got it! Get ready Joanna!”
Weiss moved her hand from the hilt of her rapier as she watched Joanna take a few shots at the megoliath’s face while Fiona used her semblance to bring out a couple weapons from the Atlas military to finish off the grimm. Though, her eyes stayed on her mother, legs shaking and heart pounding when she realized her mother was okay. As the last of the grimm disappeared, she took a step forward, her voice shaking. “M-Mother?”
Willow paused for a moment as she realized her daughter was watching her, a smile on her face as she sheathed her saber and let her summon disappear as if it was made of snow. “Weiss, you’re home.”
“Willow, we need to go,” Robyn said as she walked over, glancing at Weiss. “Ironwood is sure to send soldiers out here soon once he hears the grimm were defeated without his tin cans.”
Willow nodded as her smile disappeared. “Right.”
“Wait!” Weiss said as she reached out to her mother. “Let me come with you.”
“You cant,” Joanna said as she got between Weiss and Willow. “You’re not one of us.”
“I’m sorry Weiss.” Willow pulled away with a sad smile. “I cant talk now, but I’ll reach out to you when I can.”
“Mother!” Weiss called out as her heart stopped, watching her mother disappear right before her eyes. She wanted to race after, though her legs wouldnt let her move. Even as one of the military drop ships flew overhead and a few cars started to pass by, all she could do was stare at where her mother had been. And while she was relieved that her mother had become one of the Happy Huntresses, she still couldnt help but worry about what drove her to them.

Evolution of White Knight in RWBY (Volume 5)
Episode 5.7 “Rest and Resolutions” has ¾ of Team RWBY and the remainder of Team JN_R having a happy reunion. Weiss and Jaune are shown to be sitting next to each other and eating, something that would be inconceivable back in Volume 1. This shows that Weiss is clearly comfortable sitting next to him. He’s invested in her story about what she dealt with in Atlas (like summoning a Boarbatusk accidentally), and she’s invested in his story about when they lost the map. Weiss is even wearing a smile as he tells it, and doesn’t say anything mocking or degrading; she’s happy to see all her friends, including him. When Jaune is taking all the dirty dishes to the kitchen, commenting about how he might be sick, Yang refers to him by his nickname “Vomit Boy.” This gets Weiss giggling, and Nora refers to her as her old nickname, Ice Queen.
Episode 5.11 “The More the Merrier” has the team of RW_Y, JN_R, Oscar and Qrow fighting against Cinder’s faction, which includes Lionheart, Raven, Vernal, Mercury, Emerald, and Hazel. The group splits up to take on the baddies, and Weiss ends up facing off with Vernal. Vernal is clearly more skilled than Weiss, continuously impeding the girl’s chances to summon her Arma Gigas. Vernal is able to deplete Weiss’ aura, and the girl cries out from the pain, which Jaune notices and is clearly worried about. Cinder takes this moment to mock him, which angers him. When Cinder realizes Jaune has a death wish and doesn’t actually care about dying, so long as it will save his friends, she decides to be a bitch and sends a javelin (stylized like Pyrrha’s Milo, just to be extra bitchy) and chucks it at an unsuspecting Weiss, despite Jaune’s pleas. Before the episode ends, we see tears falling down his eyes, because this is the second time Jaune has been unable to protect someone he cares about.
Episode 5.12 “Vault of the Spring Maiden” immediately picks up where the prior episode left off. Jaune, forgetting his fight with Cinder, rushes to Weiss’ side, picking her up so he can inspect her injury. He is clearly devastated and terrified of her dying, pleading: “No, it wasn’t supposed to be like this! Please! We can’t lose anyone else.” His desperation awakens his semblance, which transfers his aura to hers and powers it up, letting her aura heal the injury. When he realizes he has a chance to save her, he’s happy and focuses on nothing but that task.
Episode 5.13 “Downfall” has Jaune continuing to heal Weiss, and is ecstatic when she stirs. They have a light banter, and it’s clear Jaune is relieved that she is going to make it. A little while later, Weiss is well enough to sit up, and tells Jaune to keep up whatever he is doing. When Weiss is fully healed again, she rejoins the fight, summoning a Queen Lancer to do battle with Cinder’s faction. Jaune, from a distance, smiles happily, glad to see her well, alive and participating in the fight.

Now that I'm a decent way into Arrowfell, here are my impressions so far:
The combat is fairly simple but harder to grasp at first than you might think. A lot of the challenge for me just comes from figuring out which of the girls to use for each situation. Ruby is the best for dealing with beowolves and boarbatusks, her dodge is the VIP and she's generally my damage dealer when all else fails. Blake is absolutely the best for when you're low health and need to deal with those damn sabyrs in a grimm ambush, and in general she's great for crowd control. Weiss's semblance is useful for cheap shots and I've been using her as my primary ranged character. Yang is really close quarters but she's a lot quicker than the others so she's good for finishing off enemies as quickly as possible.
It's been fun and moderately challenging to figure out each girls strengths and weaknesses as I keep playing, and while it's definitely not a super in-depth system, it's fun.
As for exploration, I was skeptical at first because of how simple the first areas were, but the areas quickly expand and become more complex as you go on. It can be kind of hard to remember where to go at first, but I found myself getting used to navigating eventually, and it's a good added challenge imo. I just wish there were more save stations throughout lol.
Those little imp things suck ass though, and the bat grimm flying around can get really tedious when you're trying to explore and they just. don't. stop. They can also pop up out of nowhere when you're near a wall and it's an annoyingly cheap way to lose aura.
The story is fun so far, nothing really groundbreaking but it didn't really need to be. I'm excited to learn more about BRIR and everyone feels in-character.
Overall I'm having a good time
