When, and if, I ever run for any sort of office, including a local Board of Ed. position, I will vote to and hopefully be a part of a Total and Complete re-vamp of the ENTIRE educational system, even if it only starts in my local area. The way that the school system has been set up for far too long now makes me absolutely sick, sad and angry. When I found out that it was set up this way on purpose, and its’ original intent was to indoctrinate children to go work at the factories once they graduate, AND BARELY ANYTHING HAS CHANGED TO THIS DAY, I knew that was my Calling Card©️ to do Something. I just wasn’t quite sure What at the time. But now, I do, and will hopefully get the Opportunity to.

Shawnee Mission East High School officials uphold racism. They have failed to protect students from racist incidents. The students had a walkout to protest students of color not being protected by the school. Every administrator should lose their job and charges filed against the attacker. Board of Education do your job.

Friday, 11/17/23. It’s the last day before Break. It was the second to the last period of the day. And my principal surprised me with this Board Member visiting my classroom!! He’s the youngest and first openly LGBTQ-identifying person on our school board. I did not appreciate the surprise, but am choosing to feel flattered. Regardless, I’m glad he visited my kids and that they got to meet him.

Autumn's Here, Back to School
Sorry for the massive hiatus over the summer but between my job, having the kids at home, and having an existential crisis, I needed the break.
Anyway, schools in SC have been back for a month, and a certain group of people are already on a tear. Horry County schools have gone on a record-breaking censorship movement, banning some books outright and moving others to a restricted section that requires parental permission. Lexington School District 2 made an effort to ban five books, include The Hate U Give and Bathe the Cat (which is a literal picture book whose only "offense" is depicting same-sex adoptive parents). Most notably, an AP History teacher was fired after a student lodged a complaint that reading an excerpt of Ta-Nehisi Coates' Between the World and Me made him uncomfortable about the color of his skin (Mr. Coates even showed up to a board meeting contesting the instructor's firing).
I, for one, am genuinely concerned about what the future looks like for South Carolina's public school students. If these students are not given guided exposure to difficult subjects, how are we to expect them to flourish in college or careers, where difficult subjects do exist? How do we expect children to learn to think critically when every point of contention is stifled. How soon will it be before out of state universities stop accepting South Carolina diplomas becasue there is a discrepancy in the quality of education received? Unfortunately, only time has the answers.

Lucius Fox is in the drive thru for some coffee, and like. He's just. He's had a time, okay?
He's stuck on some equations in regard to the amount of torsion a joint would go through if it's half in his dimension and half in another, and it's driving him up a wall.
He's been up for like forty-eight hours, he's tired, he's thirsty, he just wants a coffee, and also how to solve this dilemma.
He doesn't expect the barista in the drive-thru he's ranting about the engineering issues to actually provide decent feedback, and give him a few alternatives.
So he rushes to the pick-up window, not even caring to order, to look at this godsend of a barista.
It's a scrawny kid with black hair and blue eyes, looking startled. Boy can't be more than eighteen.
He asks what college the kid is going to, or plans to go to.
To his absolute horror, the kid-Danny, according to the nametag-says he can't afford college. That he'd had a stint in highschool where he just hadn't been able to focus, and his parents had spent every penny they had on their own inventions.
So that was why he was a barista; because if he worked there for four years, they would offer tuition assistance.
Which.
No. No no no no no.
Lucius pulls around to march into the store, Bruce Motherfucking Wayne already blearily on his phone.
He is getting this kid, and any friend of his, into college.
If Bruce won't foot the bill, he will.

Florida public colleges say DeSantis is censoring their curriculums.
Students, teachers, and advocates across the state say they are concerned with DeSantis’ ongoing censorship and how it will impact their education.
The DeSantis administration also recently blocked the College Board from testing a pilot Advanced Placement African American Studies (APAAS) course because it allegedly violates the Stop Woke Act and “lacks educational value.”
Sixty schools nationwide have already tested the pilot course developed by acclaimed scholars, including Harvard’s Henry Louis Gates Jr.
DeSantis claims the system is contrary to Florida law because it teaches students “critical race theory,” an analytical framework that critically analyzes white supremacy and anti-Blackness as a political and legal structure. The term has been co-opted by right-wing movements and used to suppress education.

“PARENTS’ ‘STRIKE’ TO BE CONSIDERED AT FRIDAY MEET.” Owen Sound Sun Times. November 3, 1932. Page 1. ---- Property Committee of Board of Education to Hold Meeting --- A meeting of the Property committee of the Board of Education has been called for Friday night to discuss the question of the parents’ "strike" in connection with their refusal to send their children to the overflow class, located In the lecture hall of the Public Library. What action the committee will take is, of course, problematical, but in the meantime the parents are holding to the position they took at their meeting on Saturday night last, when a decision was reached not to send their children to school under the conditions.
Those parents who are heading the movement for the improvement of conditions, while they are watching the situation closely, have nothing to say for publication, but will await the action of the Property Committee. It has been hinted, however, that one of the outstanding reasons for the withdrawal of the children is along sanitary lines, although the fact that the hall has overhead heating, with a hardwood floor over cement, making it difficult to keep warm, and Inadequate ventilation, are other objections,
It is also claimed that as yet this room has not yet been designated by the Board of Education as a school room, as at the last meeting of the Board, the recommendation of its use was referred back to the Property Committee and no action has been taken by that committee.
Feeling is running high among the parents regarding the attitude of the Board In this matter and they are determined that unless conditions are satisfactory they will continue to keep their children at home, thus putting the whole matter of action up to the Board.

5 Best Techniques to Improve School Management
Tumblr media
Building a sophisticated society of literates globally largely depends on school management techniques. However, the implementation, formulation, and dissemination of school management techniques have become a global challenge because of lack of a universal education system. Therefore, school management boards, federal, and state governments must adopt new strategies to manage their resources and ultimately develop a productive school culture. Here are the 5 most effective techniques to improve school management system.
Adopt Smart School Administration
Schools administrators should implement smart administration to improve efficiency and enhance professionalism in school administration. WPSchoolPress smart administration features such the add/update/delete students information feature that allows administrators to edit student’s information. Other administrator features also allow you to change the teacher’s information, manage logins by the system users, including teachers, parents, and students.
With the vast admin features an administrator can disseminate notification or news messages on all the user dashboards and can conduct chat conversations . Managing information such as school events and services such as transportation also becomes easier if a school adopts smart administration.
Promote a Stress-Free Student Environment
School managements must develop a stress-free culture. An effectively organized school incorporates biweekly interactive activities that improve teaching and overall management. Administrators must strive to build a lively learning environment that enhances academic management of school policies. Activities such as mind games, motivational speeches, and entertainment seminars help build a lively school community.
WPSchoolPress recommends the WPSchoolPress Calendar for scheduling events that further promotes inclusivity and proper planning for school activities that promote a stress-free learning environment, enhancing school management. Administrators should also engage with the stockholders through the WPSchoolPress smart admin feature to allow students to access their own dashboards and have information about personal academic progress like exam grades, attendance, class schedules, holidays etc.
Adopt an Effective Classroom Management
Classroom management refers to addressing the problem of overcrowding in learning rooms. School administrators should ensure that they collect accurate data that is efficient in spreading students and teachers proportionately. WPSchoolPress allows school administrators to organize classrooms by assigning teachers (class coordinators) who take responsibility for specified classes. Such administrative strategy helps in limiting the students in class by allowing an administrator to add students and enhance classroom organization.
Manage Your Staff/Teachers
Your school staff teaches, evaluate, and discipline students. They contribute to the overall student achievement and discipline levels. For instance, under qualified teachers can contribute to creating an uncontrolled environment that can frustrate school management efforts. Therefore, it is essential to invest in developing a team of qualified teachers who can raise the standards of an institution. The school must adopt policies and strategies to check teacher’s qualifications and ascertain their licensing.
We recommend the use of WPSchoolPress teacher’s features to maintain data of all the teachers. The administrators can keep track of daily teachers’ attendance, manage subjects, monitor evaluation process or schedule regular staff meetings to improve performance and enhance school management. Use the WPSchoolPress admin to monitor, teachers’ activities such communication with students and parents to improve staff management.
Schedule School Holidays and Leaves
WPSchoolPress Calendar enables school administrators to schedule school holidays in advance before starting a new school year. It has an inbuilt calendar denoting all students, parents, and teachers about these holidays/festivals. School stockholders can, therefore, plan for these holidays to avoid confusion and absenteeism from school.

“Speed Dating the Board of Education Candidates”
Not long after school started this Fall, teachers, school staff, students and parents came to share and exchange important school information and procedures at “Back to school night” for Patapsco Middle School in Howard County. The halls were lined with teachers outside their doors greeting students and their parents with smiles. Organizations that support our youth, families and our community as whole had warm welcomes and arranged marketing materials with their information readily available.
Students are scrambling the halls and pulling the hands of their parents as if roles had switched. You can see the urgency and focus on each of these middle schoolers faces as they took their parents to each of their period classes. There was no time nor opportunity for slowing down. Though, can we agree it is a proud moment to see a child so committed to helping their parent get to class on time? That evening, it was us parents who were loss and certainly appreciated the children’s guidance.
Us parents required help, but we did earn a break to mingle among the administrators and the organizations present that evening. During this time, I came across the table and representatives for the Charles Miller Branch Library, they had a flyer that immediately caught my attention. It said, “Speed Date the Board of Education Candidates”, hosted by the League of Women Voters; I thought to myself, this is a great opportunity to speak with the candidates directly to get their ideas on where they felt could be the greatest opportunity to improve the dynamic of the Howard County school system if they made it on the board. As a Howard County resident and parent, gaining this type of opportunity is of the most importance; I decided once our evening ended at Patapsco Middle, I would register immediately.
As I scan the QR code of the flyer to complete my registration, I focus in on the words, “Speed Date.” Suddenly I feel a knot in my tummy and think to myself, “I’ve never been to a speed dating event!” My mind quickly referenced once when I saw a tv show where people were speed dating and how the timer whistled so quickly, they barely could finish answering one question. At that moment, I knew I would have to be prepared ahead of time with my questions; I wanted to make the most of every second I had with each candidate. I wanted answers.
I knew there were four (4) candidates, but I did not know how many people other than myself would be at the speed dating event along with me. So, I kept my questions quite simple and had them written down. I wondered what the thoughts of each candidate would be on topics of class size, school safety, special education, and budget strategies, so I decided to ask about those topics. A few days had passed, and the evening was upon me. For a moment, I honestly felt a bit nervous as if I were to really be speed dating. I thought to myself, “Well this will be practice.” I chuckled a bit.
When I arrived to Howard County Library System Miller Branch, I felt differently, I felt excited to be able to be apart of the event and ask the questions that many parents would want to ask and I also felt secure in knowing I would be representing my Howard County students and be able to engage with the candidates where I could ask questions of streaming topics and even offer insight from my perspective, and it just may make a difference for our students when the two (2) winning candidates make it onto the board.
Feeling excited and secure I make it to the room where we are to meet and I see our four (4) board of education candidates, “Tudy Adler”, “Linfeng Chen”, “Jacky McCoy”, and “Dan Newberger”. I smiled at each of them as I entered knowing it was going to be a wonderful experience, I greeted the host and found myself a seat in the very first row. It was important to me to be close enough to gauge the expressions and body languages of the candidates as the each gave the opening statements. As a parent, I have learned all forms of communication is important to receive and anything involving our students is of the most importance.
As they approached the podium one by one, I was so pleased to hear each of their backgrounds, values, and experiences they felt would be most vital to the Howard County school system if elected to the board. I found so much authenticity in each of them as they spoke of working within the school systems in different aspects, or being apart of the Howard county communities, having and excelling through developmental delays and some even understanding how the school systems budget works and how to disperse the funds so it gets to where they feel is most important. The opening statements were the perfect launch to our speed dating event.
Then it began, each candidate went to a table and each table had approximately five (5) chairs and we did a round robin style format of speed dating. I decided to go in the order in which they had presented their opening statements. As other attendees and I approached each of the candidates with questions, they all were very friendly, patient, and concise on their ideas as it pertained to the concerns stated at the event. It was very encouraging to see all of them very brave and confident in answering each of our questions.
It was quite enjoyable and enlightening to speak with each of them on their thoughts, plans and ideas for educational initiatives. With these four (4) candidates pursuing a seat on the board, I have no doubt the Howard County School System can look forward to even greater support and direction. I must say, I am impressed with all four (4) candidates.
Two (2) seats are up for general election for the Howard County Board of Education on November 8, 2022.
