Traveling record shop haul.
West Coast OGs are not a common thing in my part of the World, so when I see the names of Shelly Manne, Red Mitchell, Jimmy Giuffre, Bob Cooper on the cover I don’t think twice. Didn’t know these albums, but all the hopes were fulfilled at the first listen.
Jimmy Smith is something else. Organ player associated with soul jazz, which I’m not a biggest fan, but his records for Blue Note (this record label is always a quality sign when it comes to their classic years) are said to be more ambitious than his later albums. I’ve decided to give him a try. I’m gobsmacked by the level of his inventivness and virtuosity on his instrument (Hammond organ). It was recorded in 1956 and you may hear the proto funk, proto rock and even proto trip-hop! The record starts like it would be a Portishead album thanks to sound acrobatics. Volume knob on organ? Guitar maybe? Don’t know. Wild stuff💥

Kenton Presents Jazz is a wonderful little series of West coast cats’ records from 1954-55, when the jazz scene twas blooming there. I’m still missing some records, but these are enough to keep me happy while I’ll hunt for others.
