You don’t think you are starting a project, but one day you look back over your recent pictures and there are a dozen connected images, and you realise it is the beginning of a project – and then you fall in love with it.”

While working as projectionist in an adult cinema called The Office Cinema in 1970s / 80s London, Bob Mazzer began photographing the people on the tube during his daily commute, more often at night.

PHOTOGRAPHY | BOB MAZZER: 40 YEARS ON THE TUBE
Bob Mazzer born in Whitechapel, London, spent a lot of his time in the 1970s and 1980s just hanging about on the Tube, capturing London dwellers quietly travelling around the capital. Punks, skins, ordinary people, chain smokers (you could smoke on the Tube in the olden days), workers, people holding impromptu wrestling matches. Bob Mazzer said: “every day I travelled to King’s Cross and back. Coming home late at night, it was like a party and I felt like the tube was mine and I was there to take the pictures”. The photos he produced are like a million snapshots of humanity in transit. Unseen for many years, this social history offers an intimate glimpse into the lives of Londoners in pictures alive, with humour. Check out Bob’s images here and on his facebook page.

For a while in the eighties, I lived with my father in Manor House and worked as a projectionist at a porn cinema in Kings Cross. It was called The Office Cinema, so guys could call their wives and say, ‘I’m still at the office'” recalled Bob affectionately, “Every day, I travelled to Kings Cross and back. Coming home late at night, it was like a party and I felt the tube was mine and I was there to take pictures.”
