Billie Bob - Bobby's - Bob
Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai (Jim Jarmusch, 1999)
Billie Bob Thornton appeared in Jim Jarmusch's Dead Man (1995) and Jarmusch appeared in Thornton's Sling Blade (1996).
Maybe 'Bobby's' is also a nod to RZA (real name: Robert Diggs) and his alter ego Bobby Digital, which he originated in 1998 with the studio album Bobby Digital in Stereo.
Jarmusch named Bob Solo after two Harrison Ford characters in George Lucas films, Bob Falfa from American Graffiti (1973) and Han Solo from Star Wars.

A One Mann’s Movies review of “Big George Foreman” (2023). (The full title is “Big George Foreman: The Miraculous Story Of The Once And Future Heavyweight Champion Of The World”, but who on earth can be bothered with that!) “Big George Foreman” is a biopic on the remarkable true story of the boxing champ George Foreman. Photographed in Scotland, 1964. (Photo 1 by Bob Whitaker.)
“This was ridiculous! They were getting ready for a photo shoot with the local paper — maybe it was in Glasgow, I’m not sure. And the paper had provided all these pantomime costumes for them to wear. Can you imagine anyone in their position going along with this today? And Ringo actually did put the bear mask on, and they had their pictures taken, and then got on with the rest of their day.” - Bob Whitaker, The Beatles: Classic, Rare & Unseen
According to Fabulous magazine, the costumes available were a cat, a bear, Dick Whittington, Alladin (in John’s case, in combination with the genie), and the ultimately unused Dame and Cinderella.

Anatomy Of A Scene: "Lost in Translation" and "Arrival"
Tumblr media
Lost in Translation
Lost in Translation is a 2003 drama film directed by Sofia Coppola, starring Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson. The movie follows an aging American actor named Bob Harris, who is in Tokyo to film a commercial. He meets a young woman named Charlotte, who accompanies her husband on a business trip. Both characters feel isolated and disconnected in the foreign city, forming an unlikely bond as they navigate their struggles and the culture shock. The film is known for its slow pacing, subtle humor, and emphasis on the characters' emotions and internal experiences. The cinematography and setting contribute to the overall atmosphere of loneliness and disconnection.
Tumblr media
Arrival
Arrival is a 2016 science fiction film directed by Denis Villeneuve, starring Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner, and Forest Whitaker. The film tells the story of linguist Louise Banks, who is recruited by the military to communicate with extraterrestrial beings after they arrive on Earth in mysterious spacecraft. As Louise learns their language, she begins to experience time differently, which leads to a deeper understanding of the aliens' purpose and her tragedy.
youtube
One particularly effective scene in Arrival occurs when Louise first enters the alien spacecraft with physicist Ian Donnelly and other team members. The scene is dramatic, as the characters are unsure what to expect, and the tension is palpable. The cinematography plays a significant role in creating this atmosphere, with long, sweeping shots that emphasize the scale and mystery of the alien ship. The dim lighting, with the heavy use of shadows, further heightens the sense of uncertainty and danger.
The editing in this sequence is deliberate and measured, with cuts that coincide with the characters' gradual ascent into the ship, adding to the suspense. The direction and actions also contribute to the scene's effectiveness, with the actors conveying a mix of awe, curiosity, and fear as they venture into the unknown. Ambiance and set design are crucial to the scene's impact. The dark, hollow interior of the spaceship evokes a sense of the unknown and creates a stark contrast with the bright, open landscape outside. This contrast reinforces the film's broader message about the importance of communication and understanding between different cultures, species, or ways of thinking.

Random Archival Dig 11 (3-23-23)
More from The Jayhawks Archive HERE
Compilation Special Edition - part 2
Jayhawks music has appeared on a number of compilations over the years dating all the way back to 1986. These releases have included many radio station live session collections, promo samplers, some totally random concoctions and even a few film soundtracks.
By 1994, the soundtrack album boom was in full effect. Releases like the highly successful Singles soundtrack in 1992 showed that there was gold in these particular hills, so the rush was on for artists to get in on the action.
The Jayhawks first stab was with Blown Away, a mostly forgotten 1994 action thriller starring Jeff Bridges, Tommy Lee Jones and Forest Whitaker, where they shared a soundtrack CD with a haphazard mish mash of artists like U2, Big Head Todd and the Monsters, The Pogues and Aretha Franklin. The Jayhawks contribution was “Darling Today,” a catchy little number with an infectious Karen Grotberg piano lick that has never appeared on any Jayhawks studio album.

Aside from the Blown Away soundtrack, “Darling Today” showed up on two 1995 European releases: as a b-side of the “Blue” CD single and on the bonus disc of a deluxe 2CD version of Tomorrow the Green Grass.

Darling Today” has been performed live, but very rarely, making only a few appearances in Jayhawks setlists in 1993, 1995 and 2011.

The 2001 film Monsters Ball made quite a splash that year, winning many accolades and a Best Actress Oscar for Halle Berry (the film also starred Billy Bob Thornton and Heath Ledger). The soundtrack album that was released featured mostly original instrumental music done by Asche and Spencer, a Minneapolis-based team specializing in such things. Half of Asche and Spencer just happened to be Thad Spencer, who drummed for The Jayhawks in the late 80s, including on the Blue Earth album. After leaving The Jayhawks, Spencer opened a commercial recording studio in downtown Minneapolis, which soon led to his soundtrack work. This studio, by the way, was the location of the first Mystery Demos session in early 1992.
The Jayhawks contribution to the Monsters Ball soundtrack was “I’m Your Man,” an original Gary Louris composition that was demo-ed in 2001 in the early stages of the long pre-production period for Rainy Day Music. “I’m Your Man” is exclusive to this release and there are no known live performances.

Here’s a CDR liner from a May 2001 demo collection with an early version of “I’m Your Man.”
Other interesting tidbits from this collection: -- Two future Rainy Day Music songs, “You Look So Young” and “Angel Eyes” (aka “Angelyne”). -- Two RDM bonus tracks, "Fools on Parade" and “Say Your Prayers.” Full band versions of both songs were included on the 2CD deluxe version of RDM in 2003. -- Two songs performed live by The Jayhawks in 2001/2, “In the Canyon” (a 2001 live version was included on the 2014 RDM reissue) and “This World is Crazy” (a co-write with Jessi Alexander, who released her own version on her 2005 Honeysuckle Sweet album). -- Several songs that remain unreleased.

When I was first diagnosed with “Asperger’s Syndrome” in 2008 (sorry, this was before DSM 5) I was fortunate to work with a psychologist who thought that as an engineer/mathematician I would appreciate an informational oriented therapy. She lent me a textbook from her library. I have since acquired a nice collection. I submit this list in hopes that it may help someone else on their journey.

The Pattern Seekers
How Autism Drives Human Invention
Simon Baron-Cohen
ISBN 9781541647145 2020 Basic Books
"In The Pattern Seekers. Simon Baron-Cohen reveals the surprising answer to two apparently distinct questions: Why are humans so inventive? And why does autism exist? The first question hangs over almost every human endeavor: Business people want to know how to innovate. Cognitive psychologists want to understand the nature of creativity. Evolutionary scientists and comparative psychologists want to understand why we are capable of such cultural complexity and diversity. when other animals. at best. have learned how to use a rock as a simple tool. At the same time. the study of autism has become a preeminent concern among overlapping groups. from educators to scientists to business people and parents -- and of course to people with autism themselves. In The Pattern Seekers. Simon Baron-Cohen argues these two questions are actually the same: understanding autism -- specifically the fixation on patterns that is considered characteristic of the condition -- is the key to understanding both the ancient origins and the modern flowering of human creativity. With a perspective that spans the first stirrings of our ancestors on the African Savannah to the corridors of high-tech companies. Baron-Cohen shows how what he calls systemizing underlies everything from the invention of the first musical instrument to the innovative output of Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla. Bolstering his argument with a range of fascinating case studies-including the way Kobe Bryant plays basketball and the piano. the prevalence of autism in various Dutch cities. and how chimpanzees learned to use grass to catch termites -- he describes how a passion for pattern-finding is at the heart of modern science and technology. But such powers come at a cost: The better one is at it. the less empathy one has for others. making social functioning difficult. And although it might be fashionable in some circles to talk about being on the spectrum."" many seek a cure for autism. and the world still struggles to accept and accommodate the autistic. So. even as Baron-Cohen seeks to understand what autism ""is for."" he seeks to change the way our society thinks about and behaves toward autistic people. As Baron-Cohen puts it. the critical role of autistic traits in our species' past means it's not simply time to tolerate autism or celebrate neurodiversity. but that it's time to show autistic people the highest respect. The Pattern Seekers is the rarest of books: mission-driven psychology combined with groundbreaking evolutionary science. It is necessary and joyful reading for anyone concerned with how our society treats those it calls disordered. and the beginning of a new chapter in how we investigate ourselves as a species""--"

The Book of Woe
the DSM and the unmaking of psychiatry
Gary Greenberg
ISBN 9781922247056 2013 Scribe UK
A riveting exposé of the psychiatric profession’s bible that reveals the deeply flawed process by which mental disorders are invented and uninvented — and how suffering has been turned into a commodity. Since its first edition in 1952. the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) has been regarded as the leading authority on mental-health diagnosis and research. But throughout the DSM’s various iterations. debate has raged over which psychological problems constitute mental illness — homosexuality. for instance. was included until 1973. with Asperger’s gaining recognition in 1994. only to see its status challenged nearly 20 years later. By examining the history of the DSM and the controversies over its latest revisions. psychotherapist Gary Greenberg challenges the status quo of modern psychiatric practice. he shows how difficult — even impossible — it is to rigorously differentiate mental illness from everyday suffering; and he sheds light on how the politics behind mental-health classification has caused diagnosis rates of autism. attention- deficit hyperactivity disorder. and bipolar disorder to skyrocket. Drawing on interviews with people on all sides of the debate. on historical examples. and on case studies from his own practice. Greenberg ultimately argues for a more humanistic approach to psychiatry. A combination of lively reportage and biting analysis. The Book of Woe will prove invaluable for expert and casual readers alike.
Mindblindness
An Essay on Autism and Theory of Mind
Simon Baron-Cohen
ISBN 9780262023849 1995 The MIT Press
"In Mindblindness Simon Baron-Cohen presents a model of the evolution and development of ""mindreading."" He argues that we mindread all the time. effortlessly. automatically. and mostly unconsciously. It is the natural way in which we interpret. predict. and participate in social behavior and communication. We ascribe mental states to people: states such as thoughts desires. knowledge. and intentions. Building on many years of research. Baron-Cohen concludes that children with autism suffer from ""mindblindness"" as a result of a selective impairment in mindreading. For these children the world is essentially devoid of mental things. Baron-Cohen develops a theory that draws on data from comparative psychology. from developmental psychology. and from neuropsychology. He argues that specific neurocognitive mechanisms have evolved that allow us to mindread. to make sense of actions. to interpret gazes as meaningful. and to decode ""the language of the eyes."""

Affective Neuroscience
The Foundations of Human and Animal Emotions
Jaak Panksepp
ISBN 9780195096736 1998 Oxford University Press
Some investigators have argued that emotions. especially animal emotions. are illusory concepts outside the realm of scientific inquiry. However. with advances in neurobiology and neuroscience. researchers are demonstrating that this position is wrong as they move closer to a lasting understanding of the biology and psychology of emotion. In Affective Neuroscience. Jaak Panksepp provides the most up-to-date information about the brain-operating systems that organize the fundamental emotional tendencies of all mammals. Presenting complex material in a readable manner. the book offers a comprehensive summary of the fundamental neural sources of human and animal feelings. as well as a conceptual framework for studying emotional systems of the brain. Panksepp approaches emotions from the perspective of basic emotion theory but does not fail to address the complex issues raised by constructionist approaches. These issues include relations to human consciousness and the psychiatric implications of this knowledge. The book includes chapters on sleep and arousal. pleasure and fear systems. the sources of rage and anger. and the neural control of sexuality. as well as the more subtle emotions related to maternal care. social loss. and playfulness. Representing a synthetic integration of vast amounts of neurobehavioral knowledge. including relevant neuroanatomy. neurophysiology. and neurochemistry. this book will be one of the most important contributions to understanding the biology of emotions since Darwins The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals Taking a psychobiological approach. this text argues that emotional systems in humans. as well as other animals. are combinations of innate and learned tendencies and that there are no credible ways to really separate nature and nurture.

Jake lived on the base, so you stayed at Phoenix's apartment again.
Tumblr media
"Amelia should be here soon," Phoenix says while standing behind the kitchen island in her Navy khaki uniform drinking a glass of water.
Tumblr media
"I honestly don't think I've been out this much in years," you admit sitting in a chair at the kitchen island.
"Not since you met Christian," she agrees.
You nod your head up and down yes. "True. I should stop going out with you then because every time I go out with you, I always meet a military guy and get married." You point at Phoenix. "It's all your fault." You laugh.
There was a knock at the door. "I'll get it," you say as you get up from the chair and walk to the door. "Who is it?'
"It's me and Amelia," Jake answers from behind the door.
You open the door and see Jake in his Navy khaki uniform with Amelia standing next to him.
Tumblr media
"Hi, Amelia," you greet her with a smile.
"Hi, Y/N." She says and turns her head to look in the living room. "Bob the Builder?" She asks looking back at you with a questioning look.
" Yeah, with dinosaurs destroying the buildings he creates," you respond laughing.
"Yes!" Amelia heads towards Christian.
You look at Jake in his Navy khaki uniform.
Tumblr media
"Darlin," he says and gives you a kiss on the lips.
You close the door behind him as he walks in toward the kitchen. Amelia had already settled in with Christian.
"Phoenix," Jake says to Natasha.
"Hangman," she responds and then looks at the both of you. "You guys ready?"
"Yeah," you and Jake answer.
You grab your phone and wallet and the three of you head out the door.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The parking lot at The Hard Deck was packed with vehicles when the Uber pulled up.
"Holy shit! This place is hopping!" you say wide eyed and shocked.
"It's always like this before a deployment," Phoenix states as the three of you get out of the vehicle and start walking towards the door.
As the three of you walk in, you're bombarded with a loud: "CONGRATULATIONS!!!" from everyone in the bar.
You look at Jake who shrugs and is just as surprised as you, but when you look at Phoenix, she's grinning from ear to ear.
Tumblr media
Phoenix shrugs still with the grin on her face. "I knew about it." She takes off towards the bar as Captain Pete "Maverick" Mitchell and Bernie "Hondo" Coleman come walking up to you.
"The squad and the bar wanted to welcome you to the family, Y/N. So, welcome!" Maverick exclaims with a smile. "Let me buy you guys a drink."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jake looks at you. "You want something?"
"I'll take a wine cooler, please," you say as you follow them up to the bar.
Tumblr media
You sit down at the bar and Penny hands you your drink. "Congratulations! I didn't think anyone was going to tame the wild 'Hangman'," she jokingly says looking from you to Jake as she hands him his beer.
Tumblr media
Jake raises his beer. "Penny, my dear. You know I'm full of surprises. Thank you."
Tumblr media
As the night went on, you were congratulated by many at the bar when your phone rang.
Tumblr media
Jake was playing darts with Javy "Coyote" Machado when he noticed you stand up and head towards the back door. He looked at you with an eyebrow raised and you pointed at your phone as you walked out the back door.
"Mr. Whitaker. What's up?" You ask as you answer the phone and walk over to the railing of the deck.
"Y/N. I apologize for calling so late," he said.
"It's no problem. I was up anyway. What's wrong?"
"Well, I'm calling to let you know you have court Monday morning. Celine Astor-Davenport is contesting the restraining order and your marriage to Lieutenant Jake Seresin."
You hear the back door to The Hard Deck open, then close and the sound of footsteps walking closer to you.
You roll your eyes. "Of course, she is." You notice Jake next to you out of the corner of your eye take a drink of his beer. "Do we have a time?"
"Bright and early at nine a.m."
"Okay. I'll let work know."
"They may ask for Lieutenant Seresin to be at one of the hearings."
"Well, he leaves for a six-month deployment tomorrow." You sigh.
"Let's just see what the judge says on Monday," Whitaker assures you.
"Sounds good."
"I'll stop by on Saturday."
"How about Sunday for dinner?"
"Ah, yes. You'll be hunting. Sunday it is then."
"See you then." You hang up the phone and turn to Jake who is already looking at you.
Tumblr media
"You okay, darlin?"
"Yeah. Celine is taking me to court to contest the restraining order and my marriage to you."
"Good thing I took care of the paperwork here this morning. I'll send that to Whitaker." He places his hand out for you to take it.
You look at him suspiciously with an eyebrow raised. "What are you up to Jake Seresin?" You place your hand into his and he leads you back into the bar and over to the jukebox.
Tumblr media
(I Wanna Take) Forever Tonight by Peter Cetera starts to play and Jake pulls you into his arms.
"Darlin. Until I take off tomorrow, I want me to be the only one on your mind," he whispers into your ear.
Tumblr media
You look into his green eyes. "Jake Seresin. Since I met you, you've been the only thing on my mind. Trust me." You rest your head on his shoulder as you slowly dance.

Dr Who: The Power of the Daleks
I watched the animated version on 2 January 2023, knowing little about this serial.
It is truly a shame that the original version isn’t available, but this animation is a watchable format considerably better than nothing. I am genuinely grateful for the folx who made these versions.
It’s hard to imagine what it must have been like for people who watched the series from the start lose their Doctor and encounter a new one for the very first time for everyone concerned… and the story handles it well. David Whitaker’s long involvement with the series and his ability to respond so quickly to the stupendous and surprising success of the Daleks made the choice for him to write this serial an excellent one.
Patrick Troughton owns the role almost from his first chuckle. The mixed reactions from Ben and Polly catch some of the range of emotions that must have been going through the audience. It’s a lovely touch having the new Doctor pick through bits and bobs from trinkets stored from adventures shared with the old Doctor. It’s slow, almost gentle…
But, it’s not long before we’re back into the thick of things. We know Daleks are involved — the serial names them in its title — but where are they?
The human colony on the planet Vulcan is in trouble. There are grievances against the governor, and unrest among the workers. An inspector from Earth is due…and the Doctor stumbles across his dead body. Magpie-like, the new Doctor steals his badge. Born to adventure, this new Doctor quickly adapts to what’s happening, and it’s no surprise that he, Ben and Polly discover the Daleks lying dormant.
Of course, the Daleks don’t remain dormant for long. While there are some magnificent scenes with the Daleks en masse — I think helped by the animation process in this version — what I loved about this story was their use of human psychology against the various factions in the colony. They lie continuously, and people buy into it, even when it’s obvious they’ve been had. Hmm… I’m sure there’s a few examples in the here and now of that sort of behaviour… And, this is the first story I’ve watched to date that has the Daleks chorusing “ex-ter-min-ate”.
While there is a little bit of sidelining our heroes, it doesn't rob them of their agency like it did in the Tenth Planet. The trio share a lovely sense of humour, which contrasts neatly with the scariness of the Daleks and the desire of certain humans to be like the Daleks even as they don’t really understand them. The Daleks show a wily side, but the Doctor is cleverer. And as for his using sound frequencies to defeat the lock on the prison doors… Now, what’s a word that describes the practical applications of sound? Hmm? Hmm?
It’s a brutal story, full of action that make the six episodes zip past.
Happy new year, and happy new Doctor!!

So so so sorry I’m late to MY OWN freaking game lol. Hi @snzfluff, I was your Secret Santa!!
I’m a big Doctor Who fan too, but I’m ashamed to admit I have NOT yet seen the thirteenth doctor in action as I stopped watching when I started college.
I watched a TON of compilation videos and I watched her first episode bc I love Jodie Whitaker - this may be slightly OOC but I tried so hard, I hope you like it - Enjoy this drabble about the doctor and an alley cat! 😭❤️

******
A chilly breeze flowed through the TARDIS. It usually functioned so smoothly, but after some uncharacteristic wheezing noises, it ended up in a back alley of New York circa ~1924.
One of the doors was slightly ajar. The Doctor had poked her head out, trying to figure out where and when they had landed.
“Right, so this isn’t what we wanted…” she muttered to herself, disappearing back inside, coat flowing behind her.
“Alright you,” she said aloud to the TARDIS, “time for some diagnostics.”
Walking around the control panel, she trotted down some stairs to the underside of the thing, looking for the source of the issue. She rubbed at the underside of her nose as she scanned with her sonic.
“Hmm… snf - everything looks fihhh fine- ii’chuu! H’its’iyue! TssiEW!”
Her blonde hair moved with her as she bobbed down with each sneeze. She whipped herself back up, trying to refocus.
“Whew! Bless me…” she chuckled, turning the Sonic towards another piece of machinery.
She flicked the Sonic using a swift wrist motion and analyzed the results given.
“And that’s snff not it either…bugger. ii’tchIEW!”
Retreating back up to ground level of the TARDIS, she shivered slightly, pulling her coat tighter around her. She glanced towards the front, noticing the door being ajar. She walked forwards to close it, looking around the room.
She thought she saw movement out of the corner of her eye. Nothing more than a shadow, but she’s certain she saw it. Sniffling against her wrist, she crept along the edge of the TARDIS, looking around for the potential intruder.
Although she was confident, she was also on high alert. Her nose was tickling - an incessant buzzing that she couldn’t ignore for much longer. She scrunched her nose hoping it would help, but it ended up having the opposite effect.
Her eyes fluttered shut as she pitched forwards once again.
“Hey’ishuu! eh’kSH! TssCH! Eht’CHEW!”
When she looked up again, there was a black and white cat sitting on the control panel staring at her.
“Meow?”
A grin crept across her face.
“You’re a sneaky little fella aren’t ya? Think I might be allergic to cats now!” She exclaimed.
The cat blinked at her and then pawed at the zig-zag plotter, trying to get it to move.
“You’re a genius! How could I be so stupid. Of course it’s the zig-zag plotter!”
From where she was standing, she took two steps to the left and then pulled down hard on the zig-zag plotter, the cat jumping down and rubbing against her legs.
The TARDIS immediately jumped back into action, the familiar whirring staring up again as the Doctor smiled and laughed.
As the box she called home began to dematerialize, she looked at furry creature.
“Guess we’d better find you a name. Looks like you’re coming with me… eht’CHIEW!”

Platoon (1986); AFI #86
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The most recent film for review is the last of our gritty war films from the AFI top 100: Oliver Stone directed Platoon (1986). This film took home four Oscars that year for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Sound, and Best Editing. Like many other big war films with many small parts, this film had a ton of current for the time and future stars. The cast includes almost no women since the film begins with the arrival of the main characters in Vietnam and ends with some of them leaving. Notable names include Charlie Sheen, Tom Berenger, Willem Dafoe, Keith David, Forest Whitaker, Francesco Quinn, Kevin Dillon, John C. McGinley, Johnny Depp, and Tony Todd. The only other war films I can think of with more star power are Saving Private Ryan or Apocalypse Now. The film has a much more interesting story than "kill the enemy," which is why I think it received so many accolades. I really want to get to some behind the scenes notes, but let's start out with a synopsis and a quick warning...
SPOILER WARNING!!! THIS IS A WAR FILM SO IT CANNOT BE GUESSED WHICH CHARACTERS MAKE IT THROUGH AND WHICH DON'T!!! I AM ABOUT TO SPOIL THAT!!! IF THAT IS OKAY, THEN KEEP READING! OTHERWISE, CHECK OUT THE MOVIE FIRST AND CHECK OUT THIS BOTTOM PART OF THIS ARTICLE AFTERWARD!!!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
In 1967, U.S. Army volunteer Chris Taylor (Charlie Sheen) arrives in South Vietnam and is assigned to an infantry platoon of the 25th Infantry Division near the Cambodian border. The platoon is officially led by the young and inexperienced Lieutenant Wolfe (Mark Moses), but in reality, the soldiers defer to two of his older and more experienced subordinates: the hardened and cynical Staff Sergeant Robert "Bob" Barnes (Tom Berenger), and the more idealistic Sergeant Elias (Willem Dafoe). An interesting note is that the first things Taylor sees upon landing are body bags being stacked onto an outgoing plane, implying that there is only one way to leave.
Taylor is immediately sent out with Barnes, Elias and veteran soldiers on a planned night ambush for a North Vietnamese army force. The NVA soldiers manage to get close to the sleeping Americans before a brief firefight ensues; Taylor's fellow new recruit Gardener is killed and Taylor himself lightly wounded. After his return from hospital, Taylor bonds with Elias and his circle of marijuana-smokers while remaining aloof from Barnes and his more hard-edged followers. There are many shots with Elias on the right and Barnes on the left, almost like an angel and devil on the shoulders of Taylor. To add to it, Barnes is scarred all over his face and body will Elias is basically untouched.
During a subsequent patrol, three men are killed by booby traps and unseen assailants. The injuries from the trap are hard to watch, so be prepared when the soldiers start looking around. One of the deaths is more obvious since a guard is displayed like a scarecrow as a message to the group. Already on edge, the platoon is further angered when they discover an enemy supply and weapons cache in a nearby village. This is the intense scene that the movie is famous for. One particular soldier called Bunny (Kevin Dillon) shows that the men in the platoon might be more dangerous than the NVA. Barnes, through a Vietnamese-speaking soldier, Lerner (Johnny Depp), aggressively interrogates the village chief about whether the villagers have been aiding the NVA, and cold-bloodedly shoots his wife dead when she snaps back at him. Elias then arrives, getting into a physical altercation with Barnes over the killing before Wolfe breaks it up and orders the supplies destroyed and the village razed. Taylor later prevents a gang-rape of two girls by some of Barnes' men.
When the platoon returns to base, the veteran company commander Captain Harris (Dale Dye) declares that if he finds out that an illegal killing took place, a court-martial will ensue, leaving Barnes worried that Elias will testify against him. On their next patrol, the platoon is ambushed and pinned down in a firefight, in which numerous soldiers are wounded. More men are wounded when Lieutenant Wolfe accidentally directs an artillery strike onto his own unit before Barnes calls it off. Elias takes Taylor and two other men to intercept flanking enemy troops. Barnes orders the rest of the platoon to retreat and goes back into the jungle to find Elias' group. Barnes finds Elias alone and shoots him, then returns and tells the others that Elias was killed by the enemy. While the platoon is extracting via helicopter, they glimpse Elias, mortally wounded, emerging from the tree line and being chased by a group of North Vietnamese soldiers, who kill him. Noting Barnes' anxious manner, Taylor realizes that he was responsible.
At the base, Taylor attempts to talk his group into fragging Barnes in retaliation when Barnes, having overheard them, enters the room and mocks them. Taylor assaults the intoxicated Barnes but is quickly overpowered. Barnes cuts Taylor near his eye with a push dagger before departing.
The platoon is sent back to the front line to maintain defensive positions, where Taylor shares a foxhole with Francis (Corey Glover). That night, a major NVA assault occurs, and the defensive lines are broken. Much of the platoon, including Wolfe and most of Barnes' followers, are killed in the ensuing battle. During the attack, an NVA sapper, armed with explosives, destroys the battalion headquarters in a suicide attack. Now in command of the defense, Captain Harris orders his air support to expend all their remaining ordnance inside his perimeter. During the chaos, Taylor encounters Barnes, who is wounded and driven to insanity. Just as Barnes is about to kill Taylor, both men are knocked unconscious by an air strike.
Taylor regains consciousness the following morning, picks up an enemy Type 56 rifle, and finds Barnes, who orders Taylor to call a medic. Seeing that Taylor won't help, Barnes contemptuously tells Taylor to kill him: Taylor does so. Francis, who survived the battle unharmed, deliberately stabs himself in the leg and reminds Taylor that because they have been twice wounded, they can return home. The helicopter carries the two men away. Overwhelmed, Taylor sobs as he glares down at multiple craters full of corpses.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
I don't want to break down every single character in the film because that is everything there is. The film is much more about character development and Vietnam is just a setting. I believe that Oliver Stone wanted to emphasize that humans, when put into a hellish situation, had to choose between conforming to survive or trying to keep your own morals. Charlie Sheen plays Taylor, a young but moralistic person who entered the situation by choice in an attempt to prove himself. There is an authority figure of Lt. Wolfe, who is technically in charge, but it is the two sergeants that play a demon and an angel (they would be on his shoulder if this was a cartoon) that push Taylor towards conforming to evil or holding on to righteousness. Neither sergeant survives the film, and it is ambiguous how Taylor will act when he returns home, The only thing for certain is that he is very different from what he was when he arrived. Both Defoe and Berenger received nominations for best supporting actor for their roles, but neither won the award.
There is some mention of class in this film because it seems that it is mostly the uneducated masses who could not get away from the draft that fought in the war. It is this irony (those who have the least are forced to sacrifice the most) that is a focal point of the film. The character of Bunny, played by Kevin Dillon, finds war as an opportunity to get out his aggressions and attack something that represents his personal failures in life. A big gun and not much to live for is a dangerous combination, especially when a person with these attributes is trained to kill. Oliver Stone was a soldier in Vietnam and he really wanted to emphasize how the horror of the situation can bring out the worst in the downtrodden.
There are a group of black soldiers that are played by Tony Todd, Keith David, and Forest Whitaker. None of the three seem very interested in the politics of the situation as much as they just want to get away. Forest Whitaker's character sits on the middle ground and does what he is told, but he also expresses that he feels bad for his actions. Tony Todd's character sides with Barnes because he feels this is his best chance to survive long enough to get out. Barnes was shot and mangled, yet he still is alive, so he must be doing the correct thing. Keith David's character is trying to survive while also keeping his own morals, so he sticks with Elias and tries to do what he feels is right.
This film is what I would describe as a war drama since it is the Divine Comedy set in the jungles of Vietnam and Cambodia. There are no really good people and evil actions are understandable and sometimes almost relatable. It really makes the viewer upset that so many young men and women were put in this situation to be morally and mortally tested. It really affected audiences of the mid 80s, and that is why the film won for best picture.
One negative note about the production is the reported behavior of Oliver Stone. The film was shot in the Philippines and the push to make the film realistic bordered on abuse for the actors. The whole production was plagued with sickness and injuries with the actors having both Stone and advisor/actor Dale Dye yelling at them the whole time. There is a scene in which Tom Berenger is holding a gun to a little girl's head and he was told and berated into yelling and threatening the young actress until she really began to cry. Actors were allowed to leave as they were killed off since the film was shot almost completely in a linear fashion, so those looks of relief when they got on a helicopter to go home were quite genuine.
I was surprised that there was no nomination for make-up effects because the battle injuries look horrific and the scars on Tom Berenger were so realistic. I just thought that Berenger had scars all over his face until I saw him in another movie. He doesn't have the greatest skin, but the deep wound scars were blended in perfectly. The film would not have won since this award was eventually taken home by The Fly with Jeff Goldblum, but I still think a nomination was in order.
So, does this film deserve to be on the AFI top 100? Yes, but it is definitely lower on the list. It was shot in the Philippines and describes a war that America was not committed to, but it was still a major part of US history and touched a sensitive nerve for audiences at the time. The film is neither imaginative nor innovative, but the realism is worthy of recognition. Would I recommend it? That is actually kind of difficult. I wouldn't recommend it to a general audience because it will ruin your day. It is an engaging experience that transports the viewer to the war-torn jungle, but that is not something that many people really want. The film will affect you, just make sure that you are ready for it.

✨“And in the end The love you take Is equal to the love you make”✨💔RIP John Lennon 💔 9 October 1940 - 8 December 1980. 42 Years ago today, this now infamous photograph was taken by Annie Leibowitz for Rolling Stone Magazine on December 8, 1980, just hours before Lennon was murdered outside the Dakota building in New York City. Here is how she described it: "I sometimes think of that photograph as 10 years in the making. I met John Lennon and Yoko Ono in New York in the early part of my career. It was 1980, and he had just finished the album Double Fantasy with Yoko. I had seen the cover, which was both of them kissing. And I thought, Oh my gosh. This was the 1980s—romance was a little dead. And I was so moved by that kiss. There was so much in that simple picture of a kiss. So, for the photo I wanted to take, I imagined them somehow together. And it wasn't a stretch to imagine them with their clothes off, because they did it all the time. But what happened at the last minute was that Yoko didn't want to take her clothes off. So, we went ahead with the picture, and it was this very striking picture of Yoko clothed against a naked John. And of course, John was murdered later that afternoon. It's actually an excellent example of how circumstances change a picture. Suddenly, that photograph has a story. You're looking at it and thinking it's their last kiss, or they're saying goodbye. You can make up all sorts of things about it. I think it's amazing when there's a lot of levels to a photograph." ✨ Incredible story, incredible photograph.. incredible man RIP John.. 42 Years on, your life continues to profoundly influence others.. 🕊 Swipe ⬅️ for some beautiful and moving photographs by Lynn Goldsmith, Allan Tannenbaum, Ethan Russell, Bob Gruen, Duffy, Rowland Scherman and Robert Whitaker Peace & Love ✌️❤️🎶 @johnlennon @yokoono #imaginepeace #johnlennon #yokoono #annieleibovitz #newyork #dakotabuilding #nyc #rollingstonemagazine #musicphotography #beatles #musichistory #rockandroll #doublefantasy #lovers #muse #legendsneverdie #rockroyalty #rockicon #peace #love #style #icon #culture #blendergallery #blendergallery (at Blender Gallery) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cl5VLPiP5Wx/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Today’s compilation:
The Best of Butterfly Records 1990 Disco
Today I learned about Butterfly Records, an LA-based indie disco label that existed from late 1976 to 1980 that landed a solid bunch of hits high upon Billboard's dance chart throughout its unfortunately short tenure. And guess what? I don't have to come up with much more to set up this album because the liner notes do a pretty bang-up job of it for me already! Yay!
Butterfly Records was founded by A.J. Cervantes in the late seventies, in Los Angeles, California. They were the label with the erotic album jackets. Distributed by MCA, the first hit was "Chattanooga Choo Choo" by Tuxedo Junction [not a fan!], followed by Saint Tropez' string of hits, "One More Minute," "Fill My Life With Love," and "Je T'aime." Both groups were produced by W. Michael Lewis and Laurin Rinder of El Coco fame. From England came producer Blackwell with "Boogie Down And Mess Around." Also included in this compilation are Canada's T.H.P. Orchestra and Denise McCann who scored high on the dance charts. Lalo Schifrin's (of "Jaws Theme" fame) group Fire And Ice hit the charts with "Inferno." DJ Elton Ahi's group The Destination had a big hit with "Move On Up" as did Eloise Whitaker with "Don't Turn Your Back On Love." So here it is for the first time on one package: The Best Of Butterfly Records.
The elite disco production duo of Rinder & Lewis are on, like, half of this thing, and just about all their tracks are fantastic, except for two that try to be disco covers of super old-timey jaunts that end up sounding extremely cheesy to me. Also not mentioned in those liner notes is another production duo, Ian Guenther and Willi Morrison, two European guys who brought their Eurodisco knowhow to Toronto and started The T.H.P. Orchestra, an act that hit #1 in Canada with its cover of the "Theme From S.W.A.T.," and then signed to Butterfly to bring their music stateside. And I think the two T.H.P. Orchestra offerings on this comp might be my two favorites.
These liner notes are also selling Destination's "Move on Up Suite" short. It wasn't just a "big hit;" it's the only hit on this album to reach #1 on the Billboard dance chart. It's a medley of speedy Curtis Mayfield disco covers, featuring, of course, the iconic horn refrain from Mayfield's signature song, "Move on Up." It's produced by an Iranian disco guy named Elton Farokh Ahi, who also co-produced "Inferno" by Lalo Schifrin's one-off disco project, Fire & Ice, which also appears on here.
Speaking of Schifrin, the liner notes say that he's responsible for the Jaws theme, but that's simply false. The Jaws theme is by John Williams. Schifrin is responsible for a lot of iconic film and TV music though, probably most notably the theme from Mission: Impossible.
Anyway, with all that said about all of this excellent music, I still have a decently-sized bone to pick: The back cover of this album clearly states, "ALL FULL LENGTH EXTENDED VERSIONS," and that's simply not the case. Longer versions of a lot of these are on YouTube and none of these last any longer than a little more than six minutes. It's false advertising, plain and simple, and because of these odd and not full track lengths, I unfortunately can't find very many of these exact edits on YouTube, which explains the lack of links that are to follow 😩.
Still a great label retrospective though. Disco’s a huge blind spot for me and this helps to fill in a small piece of that huge gap with hits I knew absolutely nothing about beforehand 😊.
