Day 93 - to Kungalv
Two successive overnight stop-overs that couldn’t be more different.
Last night at Kynnefjälls I was quite alone, 10 kilometres down a rough track to the car park for the nature reserve, and with heavy rain, no one about at all. The nearest farm building about 8 kilometres away. One of those special places that you can only really stay at in a tent or a campervan, and the latter does give a degree of luxury.

Tonight I’ve finally given in to the need to hook-up to electricity. It’s been 20 days since I last did so, and in that time what little sun there has been has been very low in the sky. So, I’m at a campervan / motorhome area not far from the centre of Kungalv, which is a busy place, only 20 kilometres from Gothenburg. There’s a payment of 10 euros to be made through an app, but it’s pretty good value really.
Another reason I’m here, is that I have a ferry at 9 am tomorrow morning.
This morning the dog and I ventured into Kynnefjälls Nature Reserve on a 9 kilometre loop that was looking particularly fine on a wet autumn day. Rather like back in our valley in Lowther, there used to be, in 17 and 1800s, far more crofts and farmers’ homes here than there are now, 300 actually. These days they just lie in ruins.

Another claim to the historical fame of the area, is that in the 12th century a steadily growing group of outlaws lived here, called the ‘Birkebainame’, their name coming from the birch bark they made into a type of clothing, in the absence of anything else. They proclaimed Sverre their leader, and as they grew, for sometime he has known as King Sverre of Norway, and were a reputed force throughout Scandinavia.
Though there difference between the lowest and highest points on the trail was only 70 metres, there was plenty of up and down, reaching its highest point, at what Strava recognises as a peak, Vaktarrekullen, at 231 metres just. There is a well-equipped but unstaffed hut here, open all year around, as it lies on a long distance footpath, the Bohusleden Trail. It has 27 sections and is 340 kilometres in length, through varied countryside.
It connects to the Kuntstigen, which can then take you into Norway on the Kyststein trail. It is part of a project that will mean being able to hike from the Denmark-Germany border (Scandinavia’s southernmost point) to North Cape, all on tracks and trails, and should be ready by 2025, just over 3,000 kilometres.

Once again were fortunate with the weather. Shortly after we returned to the van heavy rain set in again. I drove south. Initially half an hour on these wonderful small roads of Dals-Ed region, to a supermarket to stock up, then an hour on the very much busier E6.
Settled in by 4 pm, I finished my current book, Quarry by Jane White, and updated my various review pages.
This is a forgotten British novel of the 1960s about three boys, two aged 17 and the other 15, who persuade a 12 year old boy to follow them to a cave in a quarry close to where they live, and tell him to stay there.
It’s a strange, disturbing and fascinating piece of literature.
The boy isn’t kidnapped, he is free to leave if he chooses, but he is in awe of the older boys, and does as they say.
The three older boys, Randy, Todd Carter, and are very much children of the 60s, their parents not really bothered that they are rarely at home, or what they do with their time. Communication between them is minimal. The adults are apathetic, the boys are bored. Though not quite sure what they will do with the younger boy, they see him as an experimental plaything.
‘The boy’, as he is known throughout the piece, has no name, and is vague whenever asked where he is from, and where his parents are.
After the boy goes wandering one day, but returns to the cave, the older trio build a cover and in effect imprison him, though this is done with mutual agreement.
Randy and Todd are approaching their final exams, soon they will join the status of adulthood. Their parents suggest various activities for the holiday, but that is met with indifference; they seem much happier playing childish games of pirates at the quarry.
But the intense atmosphere is building, and it is clear the current situation can’t last. We know it won’t end well. Rather than the boy, it is a young girl who is their first victim. She has been spying on them, and after a chase, she is run down by a motorbike.
The boy’s demise soon follows, in a remorseless scene, but there is little follow up, no grief, no guilt, no investigation, it is as if he never really existed.
Tumblr media
It isn’t surprising that this novel shocked readers on its publication, it was compared to Lord of The Flies. Though the impact is less now, it still is a fascinating work.
Rather than it concerning the breakdown of society, I saw it more as dystopian, in that society has already broken down, and White delivers a warning as to what may lie ahead. The adults have intentionally indistinct voices. They are characters on the periphery, very much going through the motions of their dull lives, with little or no concern for their children.

I attempted a solo hike from Strömstad to Vättlefjäll a few days back. The plan was a bit insane: 110km in 3 days (= 9h walking per day with 6.5h sunlight on each day) while fasting. I wanted to push the limit and make some new experiences. The first day worked great, sunny weather, no rain, etc. The night was cold and I had trouble keeping the dog warm so I did not get much rest. Getting up at 6 am on day two to tackle the longest stretch of 45km was tough but I was still not hungry at that point. During the day though I felt more and more discomfort and when it became apparent that the route will be longer than planned, and rain coming in the evening I decided to abort the solo hike (❤️ thanks to my hero girlfriend who picked me up).
More amazing than everything was Lambda's performance. She powered throughout the whole hike!
You can see the planned route here. I planned to walk section 27 to 20 on the Bohusleden, but only made it from Strömstad to Vassbotten (63.52km total)

Bohus Fortress, Sweden (No. 28)
HISTORIC IMPACT
Inside Bohus Fortress, you can learn a lot about its exciting history, landscape and local environment. Dramatised stories in contemporary dress bring the cannons, gunpowder smoke and history to life. And what was once a military defence and dreaded prison is now a peaceful, playful place with a very peculiar soul.
EXPLORE THE HISTORY THROUGH THE APP AND EXHIBITIONS
For an experience beyond the ordinary, download Bohus fortress app for a digital guide in Swedish or English. The fortress also offers a new and interesting exhibition for those wanting to learn more about Queen Blanche of Namur and Pietist Thomas Leopold who was sentenced to life in the prison.
The sixth stage of the hiking trail Bohusleden passes right by Bohus Fortress; why not stop for a visit before continuing your hike through the beautiful Fontin’s Nature Reserve.
Get across the pond on the raft "Pålina"
Are you brave enough to enter the dungeons?
Bohus Fortress is an exciting place for both old and young.

Also Montag geht die Fähre. So traurig das auch erstmal klingt, wir hatten trotzdem eine wirklich tolle Zeit und nach Norwegen und Nordschweden werden wir auf jeden Fall nochmal fahren, aber Südschweden ist erstmal raus.

Nature Break Spots Close Gothenburg, Sweden
Gothenburg (Göteborg), is Sweden’s second biggest city. Visitors can explore the beautiful coastal city, magical islands and some of the best seafood in the world.
Located on the west coast of Sweden, Gothenburg has a city pulse with nature on its doorstep.
  Go cycling
Rent a bike and explore the city with brand new rental bikes from Styr & Ställ. Styr & Ställ has launched more than 130 stations and 1,750 bicycles around town during summer 2020, which can be rented via a new app-based booking system. Single-ride passes start from 20 SEK / 1.70 GBP.
For those who want to head out of town, the säröbanan route awaits. Ride from Gothenburg down the old railway line to Särö and experience spectacular views of the sea and beautiful nature along the way. The last train to Särö departed in 1965. But that doesn’t mean that the old railway line no longer attracts visitors, in fact it’s quite the contrary. Today, Säröbanan is a highly popular bicycle route, taking you from Linnéplatsen in central Gothenburg to Särö, passing the cliffs, beaches and natural areas along the coast.
  Swimming
Delsjön is one of Gothenburg´s most central swimming and nature areas. Here you can take a relaxing walk in the nature reserve, go on a canoe trip, take a delightful swim at the beach Delsjöbadet or from the surrounding cliffs. At the beach you find jetties, playgrounds, a barbecue area and a beach volleyball court. In addition, Skatåts fitness centre offers a number of running tracks.
Alternatively, head to The Sauna Frihamnen. The sauna is situated in the park Jubileumsparken which is part of the city’s quatercentenary. It was created by German architect collective Raumblabor Berlin and in large parts it’s constructed from recycled material.
  Climbing
The rock climbing in and around Gothenburg is considered some of the best in Sweden. Visit the crags of Utby and you’ll soon realise why. Or get a boat to the island of Hönö and go bouldering in a unique environment. If you’d rather stay indoors, there are several challenging indoor climbing walls to try.
  Discover parks and gardens
At Gothenburg botanical garden you’ll find around 16,000 species of plants in the different greenhouses and the rock and herb garden. The Botanical Garden offers a vast and impressive collection of plants and flowers and is a great place to visit all year round. With over half a million visitors a year it’s one of the most popular attractions in the region. Although you can still find your own spot or path.
Änggårdsbergen Nature reserve, within walking distance of the city centre, is a popular spot for outdoor activities ranging from strolling through the woods to downhill mountain biking. The varied ecological environment and fauna contains several examples of nature typical of Western Sweden, such as heathland and moorland. Änggårdsbergen lies next to the Botanical Gardens and stretches from the green parks of western Gothenburg towards the nature area Sisjön, south of the city of Mölndal. Forest bathing is a must for those who really want to get back to nature.
Slottskogen is Gothenburg’s main park. Take a stroll along the winding paths lined with leafy greenery and you’ll see why Slottsskogen is the locals’ favourite place to unwind. You’ll also be able to see elks, Gotland ponies, Gute sheep and other Nordic animals in the park zoo. In Slottsskogen you’ll find large, open spaces, perfect for children to play in or for outdoor activities. There are also volleyball courts, miniature golf, outdoor gyms and playgrounds. One of the popular playgrounds is adventure playground Plikta. On the other side of the park is the exciting playground Naturleken that uses nature to create a fun environment for children. The observatory Slottsskogsobservatoriet is located in the northern part of the park, on the top of the hill, and it’s a great spot to visit if you want to learn more about stars and planets.
Vättlefjäll nature reserve is one of the larger open-air recreation areas in the region. Here you can go canoeing or fishing in the many lakes, hike along the trails Bohusleden, Vättlefjällsleden and Pilgrimsleden and enjoy the moorlands, forests and hills.
  Explore the northern archipelago
The Gothenburg archipelago – with several islands within short distance of each other – is perfect for a weekend trip.

Kynnefjäll natural reserve is on the Bohusleden. More unwillingly than planned, we we had to leave the track to find another place to stay overnight. Luckily we explored adventurous tracks and beautiful places off the beaten paths.
