one of the most beautiful things about bojack is that beatrice suffers the most for mr. horseman's actions. beatrice sugarman suffers the most at his hands, and she still receives the most criticism. and she does everything she can to the best of her knowledge, and she is still seen as a villain by bojack but where is the episode criticizing his father... he hates his mom but where does he hate his dad the same way.....

The no.1 rule of BoJack Horseman is that if anything has the potential to happen in a more stupid way than what you would initially expect, it will happen that way. Todd does NOT find the receipt under the chair, he sees a news story about Character Actress Margo Martindale and his ADHD does the rest of the work for him. Herb does NOT die of cancer, he dies of a peanut allergy he got after crashing into a peanut truck. Jessica Biel loses the election EXCLUSIVELY because she doesn't like avocados. BoJack loses all his money because the Xerox company sues him for negatively comparing himself to a Xerox because of COURSE that's how it happens.

This episode reminds me of that one Bojack Horseman quote about how no one can ever really be happy in sitcoms: "You can’t have happy endings in sitcoms, not really, because, if everyone’s happy, the show would be over, and above all else, the show… has to keep going. There’s always more show." For the vampires, their immortal lives are the show. Like how in a traditional, highly episodic sitcom, any change or character growth is reset back to the status quo at the beginning of the next episode, the vampires are largely unable to meaningfully change because with the timescale they live their lives on, it all eventually becomes meaningless. They are all trapped in a cycle they can't break out of. Nadja's is defunct but it turns out they have enough money to fix the house anyway so Nadja can go back to the life she had before. All of Baby Colin's growth and memories are wiped away and he's his adult self again-- the cycle of his rebirth is complete. Nandor doesn't have to learn from his mistakes with Marwa and Freddie because in a hundred years they'll be gone anyway and it won't matter.
While the episodes does find some humor in these events, it mostly breaks the format of a traditional sitcom return to status quo. Laszlo is saddened by Baby Colin transforming back in an adult Colin with no memory of Laszlo raising him. And Guillermo refuses to accept the return to form. He's not going to wait around for the romanticized turning he always dreamed of. Due to pure desperation, he's willing to accept any change as long as it happens now.

No I'm not done actually. Morally grey characters in BoJack Horseman are one of the main themes and as a result I don't believe anyone is 100% bad or good. But I think this especially applies to Joseph. I see a lot of videos with him where people comment that they used to kind of like him and see him as sympathetic until they watched Times Arrow or until they finished The Old Sugarman Place or something, but the fact of the matter is that if Joseph were evil, he wouldn't have been happily married. If Joseph were evil, he would've lobotomized his wife at the first chance he got, but the thing that people keep forgetting is that he very specifically lobotomized Honey because she was PROVING TO BE AN ACTIVE DANGER TO THE LIFE OF HIS DAUGHTER. Sure, he only had one solution to this problem, but he waited until the last possible moment to use said solution.
Also, just think about it. A man who tortures the women he's close to, just because he's horrible and never bothered to think how they would feel? We already have a character like that in the show, who is portrayed as a parodic caricature. But a man who is 100% a product of his upbringing, never thinking of trying to be anything else? A man who, despite this upbringing, still loves his wife and daughter? A man who has such a misguided view on how to support said wife and daughter that he believes that destroying his daughter's possessions and lobotomizing his wife is as thoughtful and helpful as teaching his daughter to stand up for herself against her bullies, and standing up for his daughter against his wife?
Spine-chilling.
