I'm kicking, screaming, crying, throwing up, pulling my hair out by the roots—
Exile by Taylor Swift is such a Maiko-coded song. Like, it doesn't get more perfect. Literally every single line of that song fits with Maiko perfectly ugh!!!
The way I'm feeling right now has no solution, no relief. It's like how you want to crush cute things cause there really isn't any response that would deal with the stimulus called cuteness? I'm going crazy because I can't express how much I love this song and I love maiko and sometimes words aren't necessary. Sometimes it's just the vibes and exile is so maiko in vibes—I feel like I've understood a lot of things I feel like throwing up.
It's like Zuko and Aang looking at the dragon flames and understanding firebending. I listen to exile and it's just—maiko in my head...just pictures and vibes and feels. No words apart from the ones in the song and they fit, okay?

Did you see that John Mayer (a collaborator on HsH) gave a lesson on why As It Was isn’t plagiarism during one of his shows? First Bon Jovi and now John Mayer. Someone is really desperate to win that Ivor Novello. I feel like someone should tell him that winning won’t change anyone’s mind about his credibility as a songwriter while he still has no idea what his songs are about or how they were written.
Yeah, John, now do Thousand by Rosie Carney, featuring Lisa Hannigan. Because Harry Edward Styles straight up ripped that woman off. She needs to sue.

60! nice number :>
60. Blood Bank – Bon Ivor
they say, staring down at their slippered feet, “why do you even want me here?”
luz jolts. the gold-bright lines of her all mix and meld, spread out in wild patterns the collector’s never really seen anybody else have, ‘cept maybe back way forever ago when there were a bunch of trees and a bunch of witches and all of them together sort of were like this huge spiderweb. luz alone is a spiderweb. the golden lines of her that go to mari to hunter to flapjack-there-too and how it’s so blinding they can’t really look at her head-on.
“why would you say that?” luz asks.
her gold pulses when she says it. king claims it means something, that he sees gold but gold-like-thoughts, like so many words. the collector looks and still doesn’t know the language.
“cause i hurt a ton of people.” the collector fists their hands in their lap. “cause i know i’m only here ‘cause firefly wanted it. ‘n the rest of you don’t care so much.”
“i care,” luz says, quietly. the collector turns away from her. out the big window in eda’s room they can see outside where king and mari are chasing each other, mari a maned wolf, and hunter flapping after as a cardinal, all their gold mixing together like finger-painting thrown across a canvas ‘cause someone thought yeah let’s do it without anymore thoughts. “i think—i think you’ve been alone too long. and i want you here.”
they say, “oh.”
luz nudges them “wanna join the others?”
they shrug, hug their arms around themself. “dunno.”
luz offers a smile. “that’s okay. we can sit here until you feel better.”
and they don’t. but it’s sort of nice, to have someone in their corner.
DISCUSSION
you found another collector piece!!! oh my god i love this kid so MUCH.
i said a lot about the collector back with uhhh whichever number the other collector one was lol but this gives more on their dust-seeing ability! it also gives a little hint to how witches and palismen work! the two fun facts about witch-palismen pairs i'll give is that they form symbiotic relationships with palistrom trees, and that they are to demons what termites are to cockroaches.
the collector also mentions how king can read dust--the big difference between titans and collectors is that titans can read/understand dust, but not manipulate it, while collectors can manipulate dust, but not read/understand it. so :) fun!
but yeah. luz n the collector would be friends i think....they can understand each other! out of all the owl house kids luz n the collector get along best without any weird baggage. mari's not like. patient enough to sit with them lol and tends to gravitate to hunter who just feels very uneasy about them. and flapjack would chill w luz but is dead and shares a body w hunter so </3 luz is left on her own a lot.
anyways. my most favorite starchild who i love SO much

♫ for a song that reminds me of my muse -rowan-
Musical Prompts:
I thought I was going to have a hard time with this. But oh god I just found the perfect one and it's somewhat heartbreaking and heartwarming
Holocene by Bon Ivor
Who explains the song best is the genius who wrote it, who said:
"The title is a metaphor for when you're not doing well. But it's also a song about redemption and realizing that you're worth something; that you're special and not special at the same time."
Rowan didn't have the best upbringing, to put it shortly. And, like a lot of children with unhappy childhoods, they were left with some lasting effects. However, in their twenties is when they start their journey of self discovery and realize they are worthy and all that jazz.

Le Joyau le plus precieux
A Lucky Luke Modern!AU fanfiction
Chapter XI - Bonding
On the shores of the Seine there was an open-air restaurant that in the evening lit up a large wrought-iron gazebo covered with a thousand yellowish lights, which reflected in the water dancing in the current; there customers sat at tables enjoying delicious dishes in a relaxed, for some romantic atmosphere. It was at one of these tables that Lucky Luke and Joe Dalton sat, the latter with a scowling face as he scrolled through the names of the dishes on the menu.
-Come on, I said I was sorry...- -Shut up, I'm choosing.-
When the detective had picked him up, he had done so by driving William's car. The problem was the driver's seat, which didn't allow Joe to see the road, and he had to resort to pillows to get the right height. And Lucky had barely managed to stop himself from laughing when he had seen him. Not that it was an exaggerated laugh, but it had been audible.
-Joe, don't be like that. I didn't mean to mock you, but at a first glance...- -I'd like to choose my dinner in peace, thank you. Ah, fine. Waiter?- Promptly this one answered the call. -Bring me a plate of salmon and cream pasta, please.- -And for the gentleman?- the man asked, turning to Luke. -The same, thank you.- -Can I recommend our vintage white wine? It goes perfectly with it.- -Go ahead.- Joe watched him leave, then leaned slightly towards his companion: -We need to talk business now.-
Not at all convinced, Lucky sighed and took some photographs from a jacket pocket: -Nat has done a great job. In addition to infiltrating the security system, he's devising an algorithm to get control of the cameras, and he's managed to get floor plans of the facility and computer files. He will guide us step by step through the mission; these are photos taken from the satellite showing the level of security outside. There are guards everywhere, soldiers for the most part.- -How do we get past them?- -I was hoping you could suggest something.- -I'll jot down a few ideas. What about Ivor?- -He still needs to tell us where his boss is. He'll stay with us a little longer, and I think he'll prove more cooperative.- -Maybe we should move him. Someone from the company might find him.- -No. Thanks to the unwitting kindness of our doorman, I now possess the only key to that room.- -That's better.-
When their plates arrived, Joe began to eat with a hasty 'bon appetit'; Lucky, however, stared at his own portion with a strange expression. -What's the matter with you?- -Uh, nothing, nothing.- He took his fork and stabbed a couple of pens, looked at them hesitantly and then closed his eyes before eating them. Dalton observed that moment without saying anything, but when the other began to cough, he asked him if everything was all right. -I-I don't like salmon...!- was all Luke managed to say before taking a sip of wine. -What? Then why did you order the same dish as me?- With a smirk and dabbing his mouth with his napkin, Luke simply replied: -At least now we're square...- Joe was stunned. His brain took a moment to reconnect everything. -What a shame, though, you lasted much longer!- -It's not a competition... I'll call the waiter back and tell him there's been a mistake.- -But it's a shame to waste them at this point.- In response, Dalton took the other's plate and brought it close to him: -I'll pay double, then.-
After such a feast, walking was a necessity. And along the river it was definitely pleasant, in the evening, to be enveloped by the golden light of the street lamps in an atmosphere that took you far away, into a space populated by dancing shadows and colourful sounds. Between one alley and another, in fact, if one moment you could hear the sounds of a television at full volume, the next there was the music of some club, and after that a brief but almost unnatural silence for that cacophony that accompanied the passers-by on the banks of the Seine.
Joe was no longer angry with Lucky, and the two were talking quietly about more and less, until the detective asked a particular question: -Are you nervous about tomorrow?- -Quite. But it's that kind of nervousness that helps me concentrate. And you?- -More than nervous... Charged, that is.- -Charged?- -Ready for action, you see.- Luke nodded, pausing in front of an illuminated shop window. It sold wigs and carnival costumes. -It occurs to me that I've worked out a plan to get you inside,‖ Joe stated, -and it will require your acting skills.- -Really?- -Simple but I hope effective.- A strange silence then fell.
A small couple zigzagged past them, laughing. Then the boy took the girl by the hand and gave her an uncertain pirouette, before continuing. This reminded Lucky, by way of a connection of ideas, of a question: -Joe, can you dance?- -What? Where did that come from?- -Yes; I mean, you must have danced.- -Really not. Not in pairs, at least, and at parties I was almost always a wallflower.- They started walking again. -Why?- -Did you get a good look at me? Who would want to dance with a man tall three feet and a stamp lying down?- -I don't see the problem, honestly.- -Really? I repeat, look at me: I can only compensate with my personality; I'm a miniature!- -I would invite you to dance anyway.- Dalton was stunned: -Are you blind or what?- -He who only looks at the surface is a fool. Frankly, after all the time I've spent observing you, your height doesn't seem like such an unwinnable obstacle.-
-Yeah? Let me tell you, then: when I was a kid my brothers and I used to have fun like everyone else our age, going to amusement parks, going out in the evenings to party, that sort of thing. Because I looked younger than my real age I received a lot of doors in my face: no rollercoaster, no x-rated horror movies, no nothing. I had to wait until I grew a beard and moustache, but still if I want to drink a beer I have to present ID. If it weren't for my temperament, I would probably be invisible.- -That's not true!- protested Lucky, frowning. -And to get back to the subject of dancing, if we went to any club I was always in danger of being crushed-- -Watch out!- A man on a bicycle cut them off, and almost ran into Joe; but Luke dragged him, grabbing him by the shoulders towards himself just in time. They fell backwards onto the pavement.
-What did I tell you? He didn't see me. It's the story of my life.- He tried to get up, but the other was holding him back: -Hey, what are you doing?- The grip turned into an embrace. Dalton became a stone statue: had he hit the concrete with his head and was he imagining it?
No. Those arms around his waist, that body against his back, were real. He turned as red as a traffic light, and even more so when the other began to speak again: -But it didn't stop you from agreeing to help me and confronting Ivor when the need arose.- Joe swallowed, but he had not a single drop of saliva. He wasn't used to such human contact from someone who wasn't family. -I'm sorry I laughed before- the ex-agent continued. -Don't apologise... You don't have to...- He noticed that the other had laid his head on his, and shivered not because it was unpleasant, but because he had a further increase in his heartbeat. A whole minute passed before the detective came to his senses: -Do you... intend to stay here all night?- he resumed, uncertain. -Pardon, actually the concrete is not comfortable!- Lucky joked, letting him go and getting back up with him. Joe stared at him for a moment, gathering his thoughts: -Anyway... No, forget it. I'm a little tired, and tomorrow's going to be a hard day.-
Dalton could not close his eyes. He gazed at the ceiling of his room with the blank stare of someone who cannot stop thinking. What had happened with Lucky Luke echoed in his mind; he felt control slipping from his fingers again. "To hell with it..." He got up to go to the bathroom and wash his face. He stared at his own reflection in the mirror: he was perfectly aware that he wasn't exactly a beauty, with that square chin and big nose, not to mention...
"I would still invite you to dance."
He half-slapped himself, telling himself to get his feet back on the ground and not get any silly illusions: Lucky had simply been nice, it was an easy thing to understand!
"At least now we are square."
Yet he still remembered the scene at the Indian restaurant. He looked at himself again: how could a charismatic former FBI agent be interested in someone like him? He shook his head: he had talked about becoming friends. "I'm an idiot. And he's just too charming at times. And cute... Damn!" He gave himself the other half of the slap. Back in bed, he tried to stop brooding: he had to sleep, he had a train to catch.
Cheyenne came to greet them at the station after taking her daughter to school. Advising them to be careful, she gave a big hug to her cousin and Joe, to whom she whispered like an apprehensive mother as a final recommendation to keep an eye on Lucky. Averell, William and Jack wanted to go with them, but their older brother had convinced them that they would be more useful there in Paris, not only to cover Joe from any questions from his colleagues about where he had gone, but because then William would follow along with Nat on their journey to the facility. The young hacker had equipped them with powerful but discreet ear transmitters so they could communicate, equipping them with a GPS chip to indicate their location once inside.
In the black backpack slung over Lucky Luke's shoulder was this, a square reddish leather briefcase and a soldier's uniform identical to that of the guards in the satellite photos.
Once they had set off, and found a free compartment, the two of them began to work out an itinerary: at Lucky's suggestion, there was only one bus in Nice that would take them where they wanted to go, or at least get close to it; the journey would take fifteen minutes and they would have the chance to catch it twice in the afternoon. The alternative was to hire a car, and Joe dug his heels in on that: it might attract attention of course, but it was a better option than public transport. Luke argued that it would be pointless to waste money that way, but he did it on purpose: he enjoyed teasing the other, who was right of course; he enjoyed seeing how much energy he put into defending his arguments. Finally, with a low laugh, he raised his hands in surrender: -All right, all right: car it is.-
Dalton had the impression that Lucky was making fun of him, but he got over it as he had won the argument. He looked out the window: the scenery changed rapidly, from the buildings of the Parisian suburbs to more and more wooded patches; their shades of green blended together as fast as the brushstrokes of a crazed artist. After what seemed like hours, Joe turned his attention back to his travelling companion, looking at him out of the corner of his eye: he was reading a book. He peeked at the title on the cover: "The Lost World".
-I adore Conan Doyle. Although contrary to many, I prefer his historical and adventure novels to detective stories.- Lucky's reply seemed to give voice to the other's thought, who replied: -How much time have I ignored you to the point of pushing you to read?- -About ten minutes. I thought you wanted to admire the scenery.- -Nah, I was just lost for a moment.- He composed himself again: -I didn't take you for a fan of the classics.- Luke tilted his head, questioningly. -Remember when we used to talk about stereotypical images? Mine towards you had become seeing you surrounded by piles of art history books. Instead, I find that there is also room for simple literature.- -I like to wander with my imagination from time to time.- He chuckled, closing the volume. -At least one of us is an eager reader.- -Come on, you must have a favourite genre, too.- -I don't know. But I do have a book I like a lot, even if it was a school read the first time.- The train slowed down. They were about to enter the first station on the route. -Which one is it?- - "The Count of Monte Cristo". I don't know, I find Dantes' story exciting, the way he manages to escape...-
The controller passed by asking to see the tickets; it did not take him more than thirty seconds to check that theirs were in order.
-Good. I'd say let's start putting on a touch-up.- Lucky grabbed the black backpack in the rack above his head: -Check to see if anyone approaches, Joe.- -What do you want to do?- -I'm going to prepare our cover.- He pulled out the reddish leather briefcase, which opened to reveal various latex facial prosthetics inside: noses of various shapes and colours, beards and moustaches, along with jars of make-up and modular mask moulds, which divided into blocks did not take up much space, plus wigs. -The mixture must be fresh, so the pigment powder sets better and looks more natural. That's why I have to prepare it now, at least for you- Luke explained, kneeling on the ground and arranging the necessary: -Blond or dark?- -Please?- -I need to know how to adapt the features of the mask according to what you want.- -I was thinking of an old man. White hair.- -All right, it's not complicated. I'll get to work; we have plenty of time.-

Dom and Hannah Discuss Midnights
By Dom & Hannah
Dom is a late-in-life Swiftie. He’s always been an admirer of Taylor Swift but didn’t become a pathological fan until the Reputation Era.
Hannah is an early adopter. She’s been on board since the debut album.
Dom and Hannah have a lot in common (they love crystals, they love each other, and they love their friend David). They also have a lot of differences (Hannah doesn’t like Lavender Haze, and Dom thinks she’s foolish and [redacted] for not liking Lavender Haze.
They hashed out their differences (below) and tried to find some common ground. It went okay! But they still have work to do.
Lavender Haze
Hannah: This song gives off 80s synth pop vibes, which usually I’d be here for, but I’m not a big fan. The lyrics are catchy, and I find myself singing along when I listen to the song, but it’s not a song I’ll go out of my way to play, especially when a song like Maroon follows up behind it.
Rank: #10
Dom: I’m baffled that this isn’t in your Top 5, Hannah! This is one of my favorite songs of 2022. I love the theme of the song--finding an oasis in someone when life gets fuggin stressful. It’s equal parts a love ballad and a song about burnout. Relatable as fluck. And the bridge. Get it off my desk!!! It’s good.
Rank: #4
Maroon
Hannah: This song sits at number 3 for me for the album. It gives me Red album vibes, and that was one of my favorite Swift eras. The way she sings about a failed relationship but makes it something beautiful is just the epitome of Taylor Swift. “And I wake with your memory over me. That’s a real fuckin’ legacy to leave.” The chills I get when I hear this line. It makes me reminisce on my past relationships and smile at what they brought to my life, no matter how dark they ended.
Rank: #3
Dom: Lyrically, this is an S-Tier song. So good. Storytelling at its finest. Musically, it’s not as seamless as a fit for me. It feels a little dated (reminds me of 2014 for some reason). But I can get past that. The lyrics are wonderful. And the hook is friggin catchy.
Rank: #6
Anti-Hero
Hannah: Everything about this song is a “yes.” The lyrics, the tune, the theme. We’re all the problem at some point in our life, so it’s immensely relatable, and this is the shining star of the album. “When my depression works the graveyard shift, all of the people I’ve ghosted stand there in the room.” A lot of us fight with some form of mental illness, and I think this is an anthem for us. And let’s talk about the snake hiss she heavily leans in on in the post-chorus…what a shout-out to all of the tabloids calling her a snake.
Rank: #1
Dom: So freaking good. Basically, every lyric functions as a standalone one-liner (Instagram Caption, tattoo, email signature). But at that the same time, it’s so cohesive. It feels like it fits so perfectly in the album, the era, and my literal LIFE. So good. I want to give it a #1 ranking, but there are some other songs that literally broke my bones. So I’m going to give her a #5.
Rank: #5
Snow On the Beach (Ft. Lana Del Rey)
Hannah: Y’all are going to hate me for this one. Where’s Lana? There seems to be a trend where female guest artists on Taylor’s albums don’t get their own time to shine as a male artist does. Perfect examples would be No Body, No Crime and Breathe, where HAIM and Colbie Calliet are simply an accent to the song. Then you have songs like Everything Has Changed or Exile, where Ed Sheeran and Bon Ivor have their own moment. The song is beautiful, I just wish I would have heard more from Lana. This leaves this song in the middle of the pack for me. It’s not bad but it’s not amazing.
Rank: #7
Dom: Yeah, Hannah, I do hate you for this! I know Taylor gets a lot of flack for giving boring-ass men full verses (Gary Lightbody had a verse but HAIM got background vocals???). But in this case, I think Lana’s and Taylor’s voices literally mesh into one eerie and melancholy, and beautiful voice. And it makes me feel better that they wrote it together. I will say I think this song would’ve worked well as a Lana solo track, but I’m not sure Taylor could’ve pulled it off by herself. I love this song so much. The sentiment. The serendipity.
Rank: #3
You're On Your Own, Kid
Hannah: You’re On Your Own, Kid is one of those songs that I think can have various meanings. When I sat and listened to it for the first time at 12am, I was brought to tears. It reminded me of my constant feeling of loneliness. For this reason, YOYOK solidifies its spot at number 2 for me with this album.
Rank: #2
Dom: Famously—and traditionally—Taylor reserves Track 5 on each album for the most gut-wrenching or emotionally vulnerable song. On Folkore, we’ve got My Tears Richochet. On Red, we’ve got All Too Well. I was surprised to see YOYOK as Track 5. It’s a great song—like every song on this album. And I agree with Hannah about the themes… this is the definitive anthem for loneliness. Closely followed by Akon’s Mr. Lonely. BUT, I have high expectations for Track 5. And with songs like Would’ve, Should’ve, Could’ve and Bigger Than the Whole Sky on the album, I’m a little (ONLY A LITTLE) underwhelmed.
Rank: #10
Midnight Rain
Hannah: I’m gonna love any song that’s about Tom Hiddleston. It’s guaranteed. Getaway Car? Art. Midnight Rain, it’s little sister. There’s something so beautiful about TS realizing she did someone dirty and owning up to the mistakes. “He wanted a bride. I was making my own name.” We’ve all had those moments of being in a situation that we know better than to be in. I’d rank this one higher up in the middle of the songs.
Rank: #8
Dom: I love how Taylor has written at least 139 versions of this song, including Archer (“I've been the archer. I've been the prey”), Getaway Car (“I left you in a motel bar.”), and Back to December (“This is me swallowing my pride, standing in front of you saying I'm sorry for that night.”) The latest rendition of “I Broke the Heart of a Nice Young Man” is good! But not my favorite.
Rank: #18
Question...?
Hannah: It’s giving Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber’s relationship from an outside perspective. I don’t really have much to say about it. It’s not a bad song, but I feel like we’ve heard it before, ya know?
Rank: #12
Dom: I love this song, and I like this song. I wrote it in my Enneagram/Midnights analysis and dubbed this as a song for Enneagram Nines (folks who strive to maintain peace and have trouble saying what they want). Relatable as fluck. Also, I love cute little sound effects in songs. I get a cute little serotonin boost when the crowd yells after Taylor kisses her twin flame in the bar. This is a cute little song that I cute little like.
Rank: #7
Vigilante Shit
Hannah: It’s like Reputation Vol. 2, but the initial bad bitch feeling is gone? That opening line, though…”Draw the cat eye sharp enough to kill a man”…absolute chills. There’s no denying Miss Swift is brilliant when it comes to her lyrics, this song just didn’t hit like I wish it would have.
Rank: #13
Dom: The best song of all time. I went on a $300 shopping spree after I heard this song. So I, too, could dress for revenge. But I don’t have a good fashion sense, so I bought a couple of dad hats. One of them has flowers on it. I wish I was a vengeful vigilante, but I am a cotton ball.
Rank: #1
Bejeweled
Hannah: Bejeweled is a track that didn’t click with me during the initial listening of the Midnights. But as I listened to the album over and over again, I tolerate it now. It’s not in my top songs by any means, but I wouldn’t skip it if the album was on shuffle.
Rank: #19
Dom: Fun. Incredible. Very pop. It’s giving Leo Sun, Aquarius Moon, and Sagittarius rising. Also, I’ve said this one, and I’ll say it 13 more times: give Laura Dern an EGOT for her cameo in the music video. Do it now!
Rank: #8
Labyrinth
Hannah: People who don’t rank Labyrinth high, and I’m just gonna say it, have absolutely no taste. She captures the stages we go through when we realize a person has bewitched our heart and soul with three simple lines. Uh oh, I’m falling in love (Fear)Oh no, I’m falling in love again (Reluctance)Oh, I’m falling in love (Serendipity)
It’s truly genius. It was hard to rank it this low on the list but I can’t place it any higher.
Rank: #5
Dom: I agree with Hannah! If you don’t like this song, you have bad taste! Sorry!
Rank: #9
Karma
Hannah: This is “This is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things,” chiller little sister. I will say I love the chorus here, emphasizing all of her GOOD karma that many of the news outlets didn’t think she would have, as they constantly criticized her. This is supported in the following lyrics. “Ask me what I learned from all those years. Ask me what I earned from all those tears. Ask me why so many fade, but I’m still here.” The most polite way to tell people to STFU if you ask me.
Rank: #17
Dom: Some people say this song is cringe. They are right. I too am cringe. I love this song. I love the one-liners that make people roll their eyes: “Karma is a cat purring in my lap because it loves me.” I don’t like cats. But I like this song.
Rank: #17
Sweet Nothing
Hannah: I personally love a good love song about Mr. William Bowery, AKA, Joe Alwyn. It has a sweet little nursery rhyme vibe which I think is super cute, because nursery rhymes tend to help children relax, calm down, and sleep, so it’s adorable that she’s comparing her relationship with Alwyn to this sort of nostalgic comfort we all experienced as a child.
Rank: #14
Dom: This is one of my favorite songs of the year. I listen to it while I’m walking around my cute little neighborhood, romanticizing my quiet life. Something about, “on the way home, I wrote a poem. You said, ‘what a mind.’” Ah, it makes me gush.
Rank: #2
Mastermind
Hannah: Mastermind wasn’t one of my favorites when I first sat down, but it grew on me in a way that I didn’t think was possible. As I sat and actually soaked in the lyrics I was SHOOK. Like, are you kidding? Let’s talk about the bridge. “No one wanted to play with me as a little kid, so I’ve been scheming like a criminal ever since to make them love me and make it seem effortless.” Listen Taylor, if you wanted to hurt me, you could have just stabbed me instead. Holy cow this song is magic.
Rank: #6
Dom: It’s great! I don’t have much else to say! I like it a lot!
Rank: #14
The Great War
Hannah: The Great War is one of Taylor’s best songs she’s ever written. Between the snare drum that was used in actual battles, and the story she sings about the battles you face with relationships, ah, it gives me actual chills. The bridge is my favorite part of this song because she really lays into emphasizing the snare drum and dials back on the use of other instruments and it really makes you feel like you’re going through the battle she’s singing about.
Rank: #4
Dom: I love when Taylor goes FULL metaphor. Take a shot every time blondie drops a reference to warfare in this song. You’ll blackout! And I didn’t notice the snare drum until Hannah pointed it out. Seriously, love that. This song has so many layers and if you don’t like it, listen again!
Rank: #13
Bigger Than The Whole Sky
Hannah: This song makes me ache in my bones. It’s that one relationship that was so perfect for you, but it wasn’t perfect in the other person’s eyes so they leave. That loss is absolutely KILLER and I think Swift is able to capture that pretty perfectly when she describes that this person in her life was “bigger than the whole sky,” essentially implying this person was their world, and now she has to go through and figure out how to live without the person she thought was the end game for her. It’s immensely relatable. I’ve ranked it low on the list only because there are other songs that I reach for first.
Rank: #15
Dom: Yeah, this song gives me a lump in my throat. It should’ve (would’ve, could’ve) been Track 5. It’s an example of Taylor’s ability to distill complex experiences into songs that are digestible and accessible while creating space for listeners to prescribe whatever meaning resonates for them. Nicely done.
Rank: #12
Paris
Hannah: Paris is a difficult one for me to figure out how I feel about it. It’s not really relatable for me, so I think that’s what makes it hard for me to connect to the song. The beat is fun and the flow of her lyrics naturally puts a smile on your face while you listen, but this one…it’s gonna be last for me.
Rank: #20
Dom: I forgot this song was on the album until I started writing this sentence. 😊
Rank: #20
High Infidelity
Hannah: I mean, this one is fine. But there are stronger tracks that I like. “You know there are many different ways that you can kill the one you love…the slowest way is never loving them enough”...OOF. Those lyrics though. An absolute stab to the heart. But I feel like I would have liked it more if it was paired with a different music track. There’s just something about the tune that makes me go “Ehh.”
Rank: #18
Dom: I can’t help but compare this song to Illicit Affairs from Folklore, since they both explore varying levels of infidelity. Illicit Affairs is an incredible and complicated song. High Infidelity song is fine! I maintain there are no skips on this album. And I’m sure this song will rise in the ranks after I’ve overplayed Vigilante Shit in a few weeks.
Rank: #19
Glitch
Hannah: I really like the relaxing vibes to this song but that’s about it if I’m being honest. Like, I’d listen to this song as I sit beachside soaking in some Vitamin D. This is a song I don’t listen to for the lyrics, because I think she has some songs with stronger lyrics, but this song gets the job done for what I need it to do.
Rank: #16
Dom: I love this song!!! It’s so cute. It’s vibey. It’s good cute little song. And, like Hannah said, it’s the perfect song for a relaxing evening Under the Tuscan Sun. Boring movie, btw.
Rank: #15
Would’ve, Could’ve, Should’ve
Hannah: Dear John Mayer, you sir, are the gunk on the bottom of my shoe. Need I say more? Probably not, but I’m going to. Instead of focusing on the lyrics, as tragically deep as Demi Lovato’s “29”, I wanna focus on some of her vocal choices on certain lines and words, example - when she sings “Give me back my girlhood”. I’ll wait while you go listen to that part…did you go listen to it? Did you hear the slight teeny bopper whine she adds to it, almost signifying that she was only a young teenager. It’s brilliant. There’s a desperate plea to her voice in this whole song as well, which really tugs at my heart strings and wants me to form Dallas’s chapter for the John Mayer hate club. It’s ranked a little lower only because I can’t put it past Dear John. That remains a classic.
Rank: #11
Dom: There’s nothing I can say that Hannah didn’t already say.
Rank: #11
Dear Reader
Hannah: I love when artists talk to their fans through their music and Dear Reader scratches that satisfying itch. And there’s something even more satisfying about her telling us to hit the pavement running to find ourselves, but then doubling back by saying we shouldn’t take advice from someone who’s falling apart, implying that the only person you should look to for when it comes to fixing yourself is who you see staring back at you in the mirror. My favorite line. “No one sees when you lose when you’re playing solitaire.” This goes out to all of us who constantly feel alone and know that we only have ourselves. I’d rank it higher if I could.
Rank: #9
Dom: Perfect closing clack for the album. It’s a great follow-up to the last song Taylor wrote, directly addressing her listeners: Long Live. On that song, she celebrated how far she and her fans had come “Long live the walls we crashed through, how the kingdom lights shined just for me and you,” she sings. This time around, on “Dear Reader,” she’s all like… thanks for sticking with me for all these years, but you should know I have no idea what I’m doing. Same, Taylor. Same!!!
