I liked the part with the Merwin & Hulbert revolver.
Excruciatingly slow and dull most of the time, then briefly interspersed with action that happened so quickly, and was edited so rapidly I could barely follow it. I had to rewind every time anything actually happened because I'd missed the specifics. A lot of shots in the movie had that annoying, digital shakey-cam effect that I can't stand, too.
The core premise was racist as hell, and the presentation put in bare-minimum effort to distance itself from that reading. The "troglodytes" were just every aspect of the "savage indian" trope turned up to eleven, and the only "normal" native american character in the movie existed solely to inform the audience that the monsters weren't representative of his people.
Some of the practical effects were decent looking, but people constantly took injuries that should have been bleeding profusely and simply didn't. It was a very odd blend of unrealistic and graphic, which came off as immature and cartoonish.
It felt like the movie was trying for that mix of inane, mundane banter and serious themes you'd see from Tarantino or the Coen Brothers, but the writing wasn't very good, and the violence was silly and pointless.
There was a bit when Lili Simmons' character ranted about frontier life only being bad because of all the idiots, as though she wasn't currently being held captive by cannibal monsters who just bifurcated a guy a minute ago for no reason. I genuinely couldn't tell if it was meant to be funny, or if it was just stupid.
Oh yeah, and one of the "troglodytes" was carrying around a human leg and chewing on it like it was one of those big turkey legs cartoon characters eat. It wasn't even cooked. The whole thing was just ridiculous, and not in an amusing way.
I was shocked by how bad the foley was for arrows and thrown weapons. It was like the most stock whooshing sound effects imaginable, and I could barely believe my ears. If there was a score, I don't remember it at all.
I'm under the assumption Bone Tomahawk was meant to be an homage to old cult-classic cannibal exploitation films, but I haven't seen any of those, and I'm working under the assumption that they're probably stupid and racist too, so I doubt I'd enjoy them much either.
If there was some brilliance here, capable of excusing how shitty it was conceptually speaking, I must have missed it. Not good.

SUMMARY: In the dying days of the old west, an elderly sheriff and his posse set out to rescue their town's doctor from cannibalistic cave dwellers.
Westerns are among the mod’s favourite movies, so this looks pretty interesting. Plus she loves scruffy older Kurt Russell.

Bone Tomahawk (2015, dir. S. Craig Zahler) - review by Rookie-Critic
Tumblr media
Bone Tomahawk was gruesome. Like, there's some incredibly graphic stuff in this movie. There were times when it didn't feel like I was watching a western. Actually quite a few horror elements in it, which was surprising. I thought that the acting was good and the suspense and practical effects were incredible. If you can stomach the more brutal aspects of it I'd say it's worth a watch.
Score: 7/10
Currently available for streaming on The Roku Channel and PlutoTV.

another film ask: 2 / 17 / 26 ?
2. an indie film Parting Glances (1986), it's tagline is 'A (very) independent film' and it is also a very great little movie with gay themes and Steve Buscemi, i love it
17. a film whose main genre is western Tell you what, I'll give you two, they are both westerns, but they have strong horror themes going for them as well, first one is Ravenous (1999) and the other one is Bone Tomahawk (2015), i love westerns, but there's just something about horror westerns that gets my goat, they go hand in hand and more directors should combine the two genres, honestly
26. a film that's more than two and a half hours long Magnolia (1999), now, I watched my fair share of Paul Thomas Anderson, but nothing he makes will top this one for me, I never was much of a Tom Cruise fan, but he gave it his all here, in general, everyone did, it's a fantastic film and it's a rec for anyone who doesn't 'get' PTA, just give this one a chance and see how you feel afterwards
