Bonus 86: Inner voice, mental pictures, and other shapes for thoughts
When you think about your daily life -- say, going grocery shopping -- are your thoughts shaped like an inner voice or music, mental images or video, inner feelings or other sensory awareness, or unsymbolized mental impressions? Most people have some combination of these things, but the degree to which you literally visualize a bright red apple or mentally hear yourself saying "and don't forget the apples" is something that varies widely from person to person. But until we start asking about it, it's easy to assume that other people's thought-shapes are formed just like our own, and that any impressions to the contrary are just people speaking metaphorically.
In this bonus episode, Gretchen and Lauren get enthusiastic about the forms that our thoughts take inside our heads. We talk about an academic paper from 2008 called "The phenomena of inner experience", which asked 30 university students to write down the shape of their thoughts at random intervals throughout the day, and how their results differ from the 2023 Lingthusiasm listener survey questions on your mental pictures and inner voices. We also talk about more unnerving methodologies, like temporarily paralyzing people and then scanning their brains to see if the inner voice sections still light up (they do!). On the dresser by Nightmare's old bed was a raggedy, blue paperback. It had no pictures on the cover, just swooping letters written in ink on its first page.
That was once his favorite book. It was the greatest escape he had from reality back then, the easiest way out of his pain and anxiety. It was his companion on long, sleepless nights, and filled his dreams with fantasies of being impossibly loved and going on wondrous adventures out of the town that hated him.
Nightmare's hand approached it, before flinching away. What if his corruption rotted it, somehow? That pure, unmarred surface, this time ruined by himself.
When Dream asked him to read the story to him, Nightmare wanted to immediately reject, and then go stew in his self-hatred until… well, until the sun came up, as he had no one to pull him out of his slumps anymore. Dream was a child. But instead of rejecting, Nightmare impulsively asked Dream to hold the book for him. Without question, Dream did.
What a wonderful story, it was, though he could definitely see why it drew him in as a child. The main character was a notorious 'useless, unwanted nobody' who became loved and revered by all for saving the world.
Nightmare quietly observed as Dream became invested in the main character, tracing a delicate finger over the printed ink. On the main character's head, there was a crown. "Just like me, Mister Mare."
He wasn't sure if the child meant the crown, or otherwise. His heart sank as the child fell asleep, clutching the book. The golden circlet around his head seemed to burn in the low lantern light. Nightmare kept his post by Dream's bedside all night, warding away his namesake.

[ Journal excerpt 04 ]
(It’s a frantically done drawing of a face. It has squinted eye sockets and a lopsided grin. The cheekbones are round and high, and a circlet loops around its temples. Despite how shaky and sketchy the lines are, it’s clear it was done with care. The artist captured this image of Dream looking over his shoulder, as if they were sitting side by side. The light filtering through tree leaves dapples on him. He’s happy.)
(The bottom of the page has scorch marks. It smells of daze flowers, the cigarette smoke still clinging to the paper. Given its water damage, the artist seemingly did not want to burn the drawing anymore.)

“There is an increasing sense of what can be called legal pollution."   Thomas Ehrlich
Just a few weeks ago the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs issued a government paper claiming:
“Government cracks down on bonuses for water company bosse. Water bosses are set to be banned from receiving bonuses if a company has committed serious criminal breaches, the Environment Secretary has announced today.” (GOV.UK: 11/02/24)
Figures out today (27/03/24) confirm that 2023 was the worse year for sewage spills on record.
“Figures from the Environment Agency show that there were 477,972 discharges from England’s 14,000 storm overflows in 2023, a 59 per cent increase from the year prior. In total, over 3.5 million hours of sewage spills occurred in 2023, more than double the 1.7 million hours recorded in 2022.”  ( CITYA.M: 27/03/24)
It will be interesting to see how many, if any, water company bosses are actually denied their bonuses this year. I suspect that this DOUBLING of sewage discharges into our waterways and onto our beaches will be explained away as unavoidable and therefore perfectly legal.
As such we, the public, will be made to pay for the much needed investment to improve our sewage disposal systems.
“Water companies will invest a record 14.4 billion – the highest ever in a single year – to help ensure the security of our water supply in the future and significantly reduce the amount of sewage in rivers and seas...the funds raised by increased water bills are guaranteed only to fund improvements in our water and sewage systems." (Water UK: 02/02/24)
To add insult to injury, it will be we the consumer who will be charged extra to fix the problems caused by years of under-investment by the water companies.
Last year alone £1.4bn was paid out to shareholders in the form of dividends.
And since 1991:
“England's privatised water firms paid £57bn in dividends…nearly half the sum they spent on maintaining and improving the countries pipes and treatment plants.” (Guardian: 01/07/20)
In other words, if the greedy water companies had paid a little less in  dividends and a little more on upgrading the system we would have been spared the 3.5 million hours of raw sewage spillage last year and the  massive rise in water bills that is come.

Bandai Has Raised Salaries & Now Increasing Summer Bonuses
Tumblr media
Looks like things at Bandai are going well! Bandai Japan has just announced via a press release that summer bonuses are getting bigger! The current president Kazuhiro Takenaka has already implemented a new compensation system which increased starting salaries of new employees and existing employees earlier this year.
Now, the summer summer bonus is getting an increase by an average of 590,000 yen compared to last years. The increases are tied to business performance in 2021, and will continue moving forward. Bandai Japan is focusing on mid-career recruitment to promote a global strategy for future growth and expansion. Great work, Bandai!

She’s Still Here So She’s Not Done
She’s Still Here So She’s Not Done
It’s my birth-day! I’m one year older! One thing’s for sure, I don’t plan on grumbling or complaining about it. I’m grateful that I woke up this morning! That’s a great start to my day! I’m grateful I could dress myself, feed myself, walk by myself, hear, speak, and see! Those are the bonuses of being one year older and still holding my own! This day brings tons of reasons to be grateful. First…

[ Journal excerpt 02 ]
It’s easy to see the old Dream when he talks. Still the same mannerisms, the same way of talking, the same words he likes to use. I used to record everything I learned about my brother. When I was younger. He’d probably have something to say about that now.
I wonder if he knows he’s changed. I never talk to him when we fight. I don’t want to. I hate how similar he is. He’s different in all the small ways, but not similar enough to be like himself. He’s a stranger to me, but too Dream not to be him.  I saw him die . I know I did, I saw him. Then
I can’t tell if he’s faking it or not. Dream’s always been good at faking and lying to the villagers. I just don’t know if he’s ever done it to me.
It’s stupid. I can’t stop thinking about it. When we were younger, he always liked to shove his gloves in his pocket. Always the same pocket. Right side of his pants, even if he has to move his tunic out of the way. But this new Dream, he doesn’t ever take off his gloves. I can't tell if he still uses that pocket. He never, ever takes them off, and I wonder what’s wrong with his hands. If they're the same.

Taken For Fools
Andrew Bailey, Governor of the Bank of England, is so awash with money he doesn’t remember the exact amount he is paid.
“Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey, who came under fire for suggesting people shouldn’t ask for pay rises in the cost of living crisis, has again sparked anger when he “couldn’t remember” his £575,000 salary."  (LBC: 23/02/23)
But Mr Bailey isn’t the only banker enjoying a financial bonanza. At the beginning of 2022, UK bankers had the biggest salary and bonus rise since 2008.
“‘We’ve had a run on champagne:’ Biggest UK banker bonuses since financial crash” (Guardian: 16/02/22)
In October 2022, despite bankers pocketing the "biggest bonuses" since before the financial crash, Chancellor Jeremy Hunt reaffirmed he was keeping the Liz Truss policy of scrapping the banker’s bonus cap.
“The new chancellor, Jeremy Hunt, is pressing on with plans to scrap the bankers’ bonus cap, protecting one of the most divisive policies from his predecessor’s disastrous mini-budget.”  (Guardian: 17/10/22)
You have to hand it to the Tories, when it comes to protecting their own wealth and the wealth of their rich friends they never fail to deliver. From former Chancellor's lying about their tax affairs, to Prime Minister’s wives saving millions in tax through non-dom status,  from Tory MP's taking on lucrative second jobs, to “cash for influence" scandals, the Tories are up to their necks in shady economic deals.
People might forgive the Tories for being so self-serving if they too benefited from Tory economic policies but the sad fact is ordinary people are becoming poorer, not richer. This is what one American journal had to say:
“In the UK, the number of people seeking help to feed themselves and their families through food banks has increased from 26,000 in 2010, to more than 2.56 million in 2022. At the same time, the cumulative wealth of the top ten billionaires in the UK has grown from £48 billion in 2009 to £182 billion in 2022 - an increase of 281 percent.” (Forbes: 24/03/23)
The massive increase in the gap between the rich and the rest of us in the UK is not an accident but the result of deliberate Tory policies.
“How the U.K. Became One of the Poorest Countries in Western Europe. Britain chose finance over industry, austerity over investment, and a closed economy over openness to the world.”  (The Atlantic: 25/10/22)
The Governor of the Bank of England agrees:
“Brits must accept they’re poorer and stop demanding pay rises says Bank of England chief” (Mirror: 25/04/23)
So, while bankers are set to enjoy even greater champagne-popping bonuses,  and Tory millionaire MP’s continue to live the high life, the rest of us are expected to  tighten our belts and meekly submit to wage cuts and a declining standard of living.
Are we really this stupid?
