fanfic writer ask: director's cut for my love is otherwise
(Don't look at how it's been five days since I got this ask and nobody else remembers I reblogged that director's cut meme last week! Shh! Kayfabe!!)
We're talking about my love is otherwise, the colonial Australia mail order bride AU I wrote for The Terror AU fanzine in 2021.
Well now technically you already have the director's cut- the version that went into the zine was a hair under 6k, and the version on AO3 IS the director's cut, clocking in at 7,432 words of raw uncut linguistic hedonism, and cameos by James Fitzjames, gadabout émigré, who in my heart spends the time in which this fic takes place falling in love with grizzled paddle steamer captain Francis Crozier. (They're not relevant to this story but I do think about their forever unwritten All the Rivers Run AU from time to time.)
The whole piece owes basically everything to two fics: clear as western skies by mwestbelle and Came With Your Faith Unshaken by @drunktuesdayss; the former I read back in the halcyon days of 2009 and kept rattling around in the back of my head, inspiring Thoughts, and the latter I read while going through the Mail Order Brides tag as research, and which got me, sideways fashion, reading Best Friends wrestleboys fic despite not being even vaguely in wrestleboys fandom, not least because everything drunktuesdays writes fucking rips. When I pitched the story for the zine, I'd intended to also set it in a semi-mythologised American Old West, but not only did I struggle to not just completely steal setting notes from the fics I just linked, I dunno! I just liked the idea of setting it literally closer to home, and not putting these English lads into yet another American setting. There's not enough fic set in Australia, in my humble opinion.
Uhh what all can I tell you? The location of Edward's land is not specified very much on purpose, hah, but it's somewhere northwestish of Parramatta, roughly in the Baulkham Hills, Bella Vista, King's Park kind of direction, nebulously on a creek fed out of the Parramatta River. I do live in the Sydney basin myself, albeit a ways further east; at the time that I wrote the fic I didn't have my driver's license- god, that's weird to realise- so I didn't do this at the time, but if I were writing it now, I'd probably have gone and spent a day driving around to reacquaint myself with the Vibe, but I did not do that, so. In my defence, this fic is set in, roughly... uh now I actually don't remember? Early 1870s, I think? And the Vibe has changed considerably in the past 150 years. I spent a fair amount of time with my mother's historical architecture and decorating books to think about what Edward's house would have been like, a lot of which did not make it into the text; I laid it out much like the house I live in, which was built in 1889; my house is Italianate Victorian, rather than the blockier rural mid-Victoriana I went for for Edward's house, but it's not an uncommon layout, having two front and two middle rooms off a central hallway, kitchen/living/pantry area off the back. Again, a fair amount of reading that straight did not make it into the text, but which I like to think adds subtextual flavour.
Other stuff: in this AU, the real life suburb of Dundas Valley is called that because it's where Dundy lives; the background Fitzjames/Crozier thing that's happening, very offscreen; farmhands Tom Hartnell and Magnus Manson are having a soft boy sheepherding romance where they gently touch hands softened by lanolin and share bedrolls and so on; I can't remember if he got mentioned in the fic as it is, but somewhere nearby Irving and Malcolm are also sharing property and lingering glances. There's some flavour in here also from having read novels like The Thorn Birds by Colleen McCullough, Walking the Boundaries by Jackie French, and My Brilliant Career by Miles Franklin, but I don't know how much that comes through in the cross-dressing gay sex.
(yeah I dropped a reading list for my 7.5k smutty AU fanfiction I do what I LIKE)

replying this way bcs tumblr is being wonky for me and wont let me reply on my actual post
@hamthezombie The Saw series gets progressively more ridiculous and complicated with each one, but the first one is still pretty solid!!
Good to know! I'm not sure if i'll watch all of them (bcs theres 10 and thats too many) but i want to watch the first 2-3 at least. I will say i did enjoy #1. It was so dense with lore, i didnt expect it.
----
@boogerwookiesugarcookie Did you find Saw has more of a thriller vibe on the rewatch? I feel like it shares a lot of DNA with a police cat-and-mouse game, with the torture scenes like music video interludes
Not really. But thats mostly bcs this rewatch was for me to see if it was indeed as scary and torture porny as i remembered at 14 (it is not lol i was just too young to be watching this shit. I actually think the murder puzzles are cool and creative now)
But i do see the cat and mouse angle. I honestly did not expect (or remember lol) the whole backstory with Jigsaw being such a prolific killer and Tapp being obsessively after him, so that was interesting. It felt like that could have been its own movie entirely

I have been posting about it on my main blog @boogerwookiesugarcookie but for those who don't follow me there, I just said goodbye my beloved rescue greyhound. Grim was nine years old and living a life of absolute luxury, then took suddenly ill from the last stages of a deeply-hidden cancer. He was a uniquely eccentric delight to everyone who met him and even to people who only knew him online:
Tumblr media
This blog is mostly for my fandom writing, so the way some of you would have met Grim was through little cameos in stories, and to some degree every time I lovingly wrote about a character with big brown eyes, a long nose, even longer legs, or a deep lovable sadness about him, there was a little bit of Grimmy in there.
It's really silly but I thought about how people describe Han Solo as Chewie's rescue pet and how ridiculous it is for a Wookiee to devote their life to this grizzly, reckless little idiot with a lifespan only a fraction of his own. The time you get is so short that it seems like signing up for heartbreak, but they make it worthwhile every day and you never ever forget them.
I've had lots of really wonderful messages from friends and even strangers, and even though when I'm the person sending someone condolences I feel like it couldn't possibly be enough to help with such a deep loss, I have been reading through them over and over and it brings me so much comfort.
Please give your pets one more special thing for me, whether they love a cuddle or a treat or just to spend time with you. I'm forever going to be grateful that Grim had a really wonderful final week simply because we tried to make every week wonderful for him. You'll always want to be sure you cherished every moment.

I had this draft for the 8 shows to get to know me meme that no one tagged me in, but then @batri-jopa tagged me for this other meme, so I'm doiing them as a mash-up.
10 comfort shows -
- that tell you more than you wanted to know about me. reasons below the cut, but the tl;dr is:
The Terror
Garrow's Law
Ripper Street
The X Files
Utopia
Interview with the Vampire
(BBC) Ghosts
Futurama
Avatar: the Last Airbender
Detectorists
Honourable mentions: Andor (will probably make the list once season 2 is out, but my trust of Disney Star Wars is *so* thin, I can't commit until then, no matter how excellent season 1 is); The Great (it's so good. The script is still one of the most astonishing works of art I have ever encountered. But comfort TV? hell no.); see also, Bojack Horseman (objectively great. Not comfort TV); Grease Monkeys (I've got to get hold of season 2, but I'm really fond of its coarseness, wish-fulfilment and sureallism).
Tagging 10 people if they wanna join in, but others feel free to say I tagged you! @stripedroseandsketchpads, @notfromcold, @notabuddhist, @donnaimmaculata, @erinaceina, @boogerwookiesugarcookie, @elwenyere, @kheldara, @bellaroles, @jimtheviking
List 10 comfort shows and then tag 10 people
The Terror: Like Ripper Street below, I feel this show deep in my bones and think I must be actually insane when I try to explain to people what I like about it (watching it literally made my husband's depression worse so I'm not allowed to talk about it. Jk. Sort of. About the last bit anyway). The sheer ridiculousness of that era of exploration has been a firm fave for years and I love how the show weaves horror and hubris together, how it's not a straightforward 'natives get vengeance on colonisers' story, but the colonisers ruin it for everyone, poison life for Silna, too (all without any threat of sexual violence towards her CAN YOU BELIEVE IT). I love all the attempts to impose 'civilisation' on the life the men try to live as they come to realise how doomed they are, how key the trappings of their life become - objects as tethers and talismans. I love how utterly futile it all is. How much they all care, and the audience cares despite that. Self-destruction and salvation all jumbled up together. Two full crews go into the ice and die. The end. They do everything they can not to die and it happens anyway, it's the ultimate 'the love was there and it didn't change anything'. And no one learns anything. Perfect TV.
Garrow's Law: Sometimes I do want my historical drama to be wish fulfillment actually, and this is the actual og fave. No, most of the cases weren't actually Garrow's, yes, it's a fluffy liberal take on things that played out in a more complex way, but the cast is so good, and Garrow is such a likeable guy, but then you see his flaws emerge in such a gentle way through the four series, and it really does case-of-the-week with characterisation so well, and it's got that amazing British TV character actor cast where there's always someone in the background you know, and the building romance between Garrow and Sarah, and the real repercussions of it for her are handled so sensitively, augh the culmination of the series with their own personal legal cases is so good.
Ripper Street: in my head this show was so much more than the sum of its parts. Season 1 was on the surface a fun BBC historical romp. Season 2 I had to watch through gritted teeth because Susan's situation quicked me out too much, among other reasons. Season 3 leaned into the more sinister side of the protagonist and came through as something weirder and darker, a vein which ran through Seasons 4 and 5, which I thoroughly enjoyed. I live for my alternative reading of the migration stories and nightmarish flipsides of people that we get running through the background of seasons [3/]4/5, but uh. the show's tumblr fandom is not a place for me. Reid is actually monstrous, and I like him despite/because of that. Oh man, I have so many feelings about this show, and I'd love to do a rewatch and blog about all my crazy theories but I'd probably have to go into witness protection afterwards. But rest assured, it isn't a show about the Ripper, and it's all the better for that. It does class and trauma so well, it also captures all the optimistic curiosity and the utter hypocrisy and hubris of the Victorian era so well.
The X Files: I mean, it's a formative influence, innit. Seasons 1 and 3 are the best, a lot of the 'classic' favourites are episodes I actually really disliked, even though the early seasons are the best a lot of my favourite episodes are from later...the beauty of TXF is that there's so much of it you can hold contradictory opinions about what makes it good, though, and my theory is that it's at its best when it's early and still being allowed to take its course, where even the mytharc hasn't tied itself in knots yet so every episode is of a higher standard, and then later, when the actors have wrested control of their characters from CC enough to play them like they want, but the good episodes are really just MotW ones because the mytharc has vanished up it's own fundament and I've lost track of whose turn it is to have a near-death season arc. Not technically the TV series, but still, Fight the Future is just so much of its time, watching it is like having a warm bubble bath in childhood nostalgia. Even the later series have things to recommend them - I always enjoy Doggett much more than I'm expecting to, and it's about bloody time Scully got a decent female friend in the form of Reyes...I haven't watched seasons 10 onwards though, I don't feel I'm missing much. Five fave episodes: 1.13 Beyond the Sea, 3.4 Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose, 5.4 Detour, 7.17 all things, 6.19 The Unnatural.
Utopia: Tragically incomplete at 2 seasons, but what a pair of seasons they are. Brutal and uncompromising, horrible and compelling, but also frequently hilarious and full of the warmest, most fascinating characters who are all on a journey to Getting Much Worse. It's not something I've been able to watch since the pandemic *weak laugh* but I know when I do go back to it it will remain painfully prescient and uncomfortable. The longing for a 'balancing' and a righting of a historic wrong that drives it, and the desperate failures between people who are really just searching for love and don't know how to give/receive it...ugh so good.
Interview with the Vampire: Just rewatched season 1 and I'm just. No notes, five stars. The way Louis think he's a narrator in control, the way Daniel knows such a thing isn't possible, the way Louis does let himself get drawn on things, the way Armand sees the danger in this but it's not in his control any longer. Memory is a monster. The Odyssey of recollection. Fucking won my heart with those lines alone.
(BBC) Ghosts: Ok, I will say that I think the last season was actually a bit weak. They were in a hurry to finish, and they got away with wringing the feels from the important bits (The Captain's death was perfect and I will say this over and over again), but it felt like it was in a rush to come up with scenarios that would force admissions like The Captain's, whereas the show is at its best meandering around in a buffonish way that suddenly results in a Big Oof moment. Robin's arc in season 4 was a great example of this, as was Mary's. But basically it's still simply perfect comfort TV: silly but not malicious, unfair but kind to its characters. I'm going to miss them all so much, but I'm also going to rewatch so much.
Futurama: bit basic maybe, but I have watched it so often and I can watch any episode (ok, except for Jurassic Bark) again and again and again. I don't think I've binged any TV show so often with so many different people. Not sure how I feel about the immanent revival, but this has always been my favourite Matt Groening product, so fingers crossed.
Avatar: the Last Airbender: without getting into like...fandom discourse, man, this is a really perfect show. No need to say 'ooh it gets good after--!', it's just good from the beginning. A really well fleshed-out world, great characters who grow through the series, enough self awareness that the 'clip-show' episode Ember Island Players actually builds on the characterisation and addresses ambiguities in its own plots. A show that sticks to its principles and doesn't fudge the ending and also consistently looks gorgeous.
Detectorists: I had to put it on because no other show has literally made me fall off my chair laughing. Are the main characters useless? Yes. Is it often perplexing that the women in their lives spend any time with them? Yes. But that's forgiveable, because it's ultimately so kind to its beleagured characters and things work out despite their stupid decisions. Also it just captures rural English eccentricity so well. They're all such freaks (affectionate).

Fic Stats Meme
Rules: Give us the links to your fics with the most hits, second most kudos, third most comments, fourth most bookmarks, fifth most words, and your fic with the least amount of words. Thanks @theydjarin for the tag! :)
Most Hits
From the Same Star - (T, 45.3K, Dinluke and Finnpoe) with 5,741 hits
It's been six weeks, four days, and 21 hours since Leia Organa has last heard from Poe Dameron. She can't lose him. He's too important, to the Resistance, to the war effort, to her. She has no options left but to contact the one person she believes could find him and rescue him. The Mand'alor has been living in retirement with his husband and their son, but he's her last hope. In short, the ruler of Mandalore and Jedi Master Skywalker help locate Poe Dameron. What they don't expect is to bring others back with them.
Second Most Kudos
rite of movement - (E, 3.4k, Dinluke) with 277 kudos (actually tied for first place but it would have been FTSS again)
Luke was only at this self defense class because Leia had somehow managed to convince him to sign up. He really didn't need to learn self defense, thankfully his years in the military had done taught him enough. However, the gorgeous and shy but unbearably kind instructor Din Djarin was the spectacle that made going to classes a little more interesting. They seem to get far more interesting after Din asks him to help demonstrate some moves.
Third Most Comments
My Dear, You Fool (G, 2.2k, Henry Clerval/Victor Frankenstein (yes actually) with 23 comments
Victor has been ill for many months whilst creating his monster. When he sees Henry Clerval, it seems as though he has not endured these hardships. However, he falls very ill. Luckily, he has Henry to help him.
Fourth Most Bookmarks
Six Shots Out of Sunday - (T, 2.2k, Dinluke) with 17 bookmarks
Luke really hates living on this side of town. He's used to hearing gunshots, that's not too surprising. But the man knocking on his door, asking to borrow his phone so he can call his son's babysitter, yeah that's new. Inspired by a tweet "I had six shots in me. Two were bourbon. Three were Pfizer. One was that .38 slug that the doc never bothered to fish out of my shoulder. And on a night like this, I was feeling all of em."
Fifth Most Words
This is my 4th most words I'm not linking my sh*rlck fic
Smoke it Flies (T, 10.6k, Finnpoe)
A new recruit from Kalluran Smokejumpers, Finn Everson joins the Bespin Hotshots out of Yavin National Forest. There, he meets the Bespin Hotshot Crew, including their hopeful new squad boss, Poe Dameron. He and Poe work through some troubles of their own and find something new out of it.
Least Amount of Words
chipped china (G, 161, Dincobb)
Din's musings before he sleeps.

playlist music meme
I was tagged by @brynnmclean in a playlist meme!
Here are the rules:
you can usually tell a lot about a person by the type of music they listen to. put your favorite playlist on shuffle and list the first ten songs then tag ten people! no skipping!
Ten people is...a lot of people. We'll see how many I actually tag when I get to the end of this post.
Okay! So the playlist I'm using I've called Mood Lift - though really Energy Lift is more accurate. This is my dancing/cleaning/soup making playlist. Let's put it on shuffle and here we gooooo:
Opps - Vince Staples & Yugen Blackrock. From the Black Panther soundtrack, love the thudding drums. This one is on a subplaylist in my mind - Songs to Rob a Bank To.
Sidekick - WALK THE MOON. This is just a very happy song for me. Always gets me moving. Bonus as good song for soundtracking a friends to friends-with-benefits who are still pining helplessly sort of story.
Daisy - Fang Island. Someone once described Fang Island music as the feeling you get when everyone is high-fiving everybody else, and this song is really the perfect encapsulation of that feeling.
Shrimp - Dessa. I love Dessa, and this minute-long autobiographical rap won me over with the line, "Always a bridesmaid....NEVER AN ASTRONAUT!" Also, random trivia, this was my pandemic handwashing song.
Handclap - Fitz and Tantrums. Always good for an energy hit!
Liquid Lunch - Caro Emerald. While I've wandered away from it, I did have a steampunk phase, and a takeaway from it is a lingering love of electroswing - expecially this song.
Graffiti - CHVRCHES. Sometimes you just want electronic eighties inspired female fronted goodness, and CHVRCHES always delivers. Even if I do have to spell the band name out three times to get it right.
bad guy - Billie Eilish. Also on the Songs to Rob a Bank To playlist. It's the snapping. Love a song with a menacing snap.
Shut Up and Drive - Rihanna. Gets me dancing!
Ballroom Blitz - Sweet. So, fun fact about me. I make toffee sometimes. And toffee making requires that you vigorously stir a pot for twelve straight minutes. Ballroom Blitz is the best song I've found for getting through the 7-11 minute slump. It's even got a scream in a good spot for when the sugar mixture starts to thicken and it feels like my arm is going to fall off.
There you have it! A mix of songs on my high energy playlist.
Okay, tagging people. @virusq, @tobermoriansass, @chamerionwrites, @boogerwookiesugarcookie, @islandbetweenrivers - if any of you are interested, I'd love to see it!
And I also tag YOU, person reading this who wishes they had been tagged. Tag me if you do it based on this post!

ao3 wrapped ALL BITCH
oh my friend, you are a reliable source of "wanting to know shit", as always.
How many words have you written this year?
I have put 48,376 words on AO3! How many have I written? Trickier to calculate, but there’s about 50k in my mountain of drafts, approximately 30k of which I wrote this year but haven’t finished.
How many works did you publish this year?
Nine!
What work are you most proud of (regardless of kudos/hits)?
Fairly recent, but I’m really happy with the strangerthings werewolf thing I turned out for a Halloween exchange.
What work of yours has the most hits?
From 2022, it’s the Steve/Eddie thing where they go to a Judas Priest show.
What work of yours got more feedback than you expected?
I’m always a little surprised when stuff gets feedback at all, since I loathe doing promo and that’s basically how you get words in front of eyeballs, but I was delighted with how my Fitzjames/Goodsir fic about jerking off was received.
Favorite title you used
“heart into a glacier”. What better choice is there for a double drabble about a hairy old man confronting the inevitability of death in the ice than Kim Petras lyrics?
If you use song lyrics, which artist’s songs did you pull from the most?
I exclusively use song lyrics (or poetry), and the only artist I used twice was Paul Kelly (on my werewolf fics), so I guess him!
Pairing you wrote the most for this year?
It’s Steve/Eddie strangerthings, at a current total of 4 fics!
Favorite pairing you wrote for this year?
Shocked and appalled to report that I only wrote ONE Crozier/Fitzjames fic this year, but I think it’s still them.
What work was the quickest to write?
Also “heart into a glacier”, which I knocked out in about three hours (that’s how long it usually takes me to write 200 words tbh)
What work took you the longest to write?
This year's Dear God, Jenn, Speed Up award goes to “a sense cannot be described” (the Fitzjames/Goodsir jerkoff fic), which according to my tracking spreadsheet I started writing in December 2020 and finished in February 2022.
How many WIP’s do you have in your docs for next year?
Let’s consult the tracking spreadsheet again! In the in-progress tabs, there are 24 WIPs, though one of those is for an exchange due later this month.
What’s your longest work of the year?
Judas Priest thing ("you gotta get a reaction") again!
What’s your shortest work of the year?
“heart into a glacier” again!
What WIP are you taking into next year with you?
This is the same question as question 12.
What’s your most common “Additional Tags” tag?
“Anal Sex”! 🎉
Your favorite character to write this year?
It’s my BOYYYYYYY Eddie Munson, blorbo of my heart (or at least of my year, since, like, April)
The character that gave you the most trouble writing this year?
Annoyingly I do struggle a bit with my other boyyyyy Steve Harrington’s voice. This is annoying because I keep having ideas where he’s the best POV character, and a witch cursed me to only write in close third-person single POV.
What’s one pairing you want to explore next year?
*glances at my 12 Steve/Eddie WIPs* uh.
Which work of yours have you reread the most?
I actually don’t re-read my own work much, though I have no issue with those who do. Probably “you gotta get a reaction” again, since I broke my own rules and started posting before I was done writing, and I had to re-read the first chapter to get back into the flow.
How many kudos in total did you get this year?
2,329.
Which work has the most comments?
Also “you gotta get a reaction”.
Did you do any collaborative works this year?
Nope! I still have yet to actually collaborate on something and end up finishing it.
Did you write any gifts this year?
I only did two exchanges this year— the Fruity Four Cocktail Hour discord’s Halloween mixer (the werewolf thing) and Fall Fitzier exchange (this coworkers-who-hate-each-other on a blind date thing https://archiveofourown.org/works/43300659 ), and I guess you could count heart into a glacier again as a gift for TUUNBAQ WITH A GUN.
Did you receive any gifts this year?
Yes! I thoroughly enjoyed my monster-hunter gift from Halloween, and the incomparable Kit wrote me this excellent Arctic no-nut November fic for Fitziermas!
What’s your most common category?
M/M. Writing women without getting in my fat dyke feelings is hard.
What do you listen to while writing?
I listen to a lot of synthwave and study beats when I’m trying to concentrate. Timecop1983, Mort Garson, Extrawelt, Kavinsky, Louie Zong, Dance With the Dead, kind of thing.
Favorite work you wrote this year?
Uhhhhhhh this is always a toughie, I like everything I wrote! I wouldn’t have shown them to anyone else if I didn’t! I’m going to give it to my Fall Fitzier Exchange work, “pass a lucky penny by” (link at no. 24) which I struggled with but ended up happy with.
Favorite line/passage you wrote this year?
I said a whole wanky thing about taking stuff out of context earlier but I quite liked this opening paragraph, from the Little/Crozier dream sex thing from Rarepair Week:
Most of Edward’s dreams, when he remembers them, are hazy, more sound and colour than anything else. Sometimes he has place-dreams of his parent’s house, searching cellar to attic for the sounds of his mother or his sisters’ voices, always a room away; sometimes, he dreams of being back aboard ships he had served on, adrift on a featureless imaginary sea.
Biggest surprise while writing this year?
How fast I can get blorbo brainworms, I think? I’d started writing Eddie stuff like halfway through watching s4 and had a pile of concepts together by the time part 2 dropped, and my Spotify is just RUINED with 80’s metal.

Cities meme that I’m stealing from twitter @boogerwookiesugarcookie :
City I dislike: Chicago
City I think is overrated: also Chicago (sorry Chicagoans. Whenever I ask one of you why you love it, you shout things like " IT'S THE WINDY CITY!!!" which is literally meaningless)
Cities I like: Seattle, Toronto, SF fifteen years ago
Cities I love: Los Angeles, Austin
City I would like to live in: Austin, Los Angeles
Cities I want to visit: Tokyo, Rekjavik, Montreal, honestly if I've never been I'll try anything once
