This is not fully fleshed out or formed particularly well, but I, of course, had More Thoughts as I do my annual "it's turning toward spring, therefore AtLA" rewatch and re-obsession. Maybe I could eventually be bothered to come back to thing and put in proper context/references, but for now all I got are thoughts.
So, I watched the Ember Island Players episode earlier this evening and had some more thoughts on the play and what it tells us about Fire Nation views on Zuko. Obviously it's made clear that they're supposed to not like him, as the audience in the episode applauds when he is killed by Azula, but even before that we can see the setup of this dislike for him, namely in the rendition the Players do of the crystal catacombs of Ba Sing Se. We see Katara and Zuko's characters in the catacombs sharing a moment, where it's then "revealed" that Katara has "always had a thing" for Zuko, and then they are implied to hook up.
What's interesting to me, with my Literature Degree™️ lens and what I learned in my theory class about the positioning of Nature in relation to Man in Western philosophy (which really reached its epoch during the Enlightenment) makes the subtext here really fascinating. Hooking Zuko up with Katara serves to undermine him to the FN audience with their implicit biases against not only anyone who isn't FN, but against people of the SWT in particular: people who they consider peasants and savages. We see this in our own world with indigenous people, or "less civilized" people like Africans, because they are "closer to nature" and therefore "sub-human" in a way, being positioned closer to animals. (This way of thinking also is applied to women in our world through this Western philosophy, but I don't think that vector actually applies to the FN perspective because of all the nations they are actually shown (in the show) to be the most equal between the genders.)
So by putting their "civilized" prince with the "uncivilized savage" who is not deemed anywhere near the level of even the lowliest FN citizen (and perhaps considered even lesser as a waterbender than a nonbender would be, but that's pure conjecture), the play is subtly setting up and prepping their audience to be more and more okay with the "betrayal" of Zuko first when he joins the Avatar's team, and then finally when he is killed near the end of the play. He's already been "tainted" by the less civilized Katara in the second act.
If the writers of the episode were worth their salt, they would have realized that's also what they were doing when they put that in, beyond it being "hur hur zutara" (according to the creators, it was ostensibly supposed to make fun of the zutara shippers, though in my, and many others', opinion it…… really failed to do that), but I'm not entirely sure they would have, considering that it's very on par with the implicit biases that plague us in the Western world today

the duel on mustafar/ the last agni kai
so im a sucker for the duel on mustafar right (i mean who isn’t). but im also a sucker for the last agni kai from the avatar the last airbender and i just couldn’t help noticing similarities between the two. so if im gonna be losing my mind between these parallels then so should you.
the lead up
both battles are the culmination of a trilogy of movies/ seasons. there has been a war going on in both the world of star wars and avatar. the duel on mustafar and the last agni kai are spliced between the yoda v. palpatine fight and the aang v. ozai fight. these two fight scenes are the stereotypical good vs. evil battle that we see in multiple high fanstay/ sci- fi franchises. the yoda/palpatine fight and the aang/ozai fight is significant for what it means as culmination of the war and the physical plot. its also similar to the thanos v avengers fight in endgame. however, unlike the final endgame battle, yoda v. palp and aand v. ozai is not the culmination of the emotional/ character driven part of the story. which is why even though both fight scenes are cool and for what it represents in the war overall, we the audience don’t exactly care for it the way we care for the duel on mustafar and the last agni kai.
the setting
now that we got the yoda v palp and aang v ozai fight been taken care off. lets talk about the real reason why im losing my mind. the duel on mustafar and the last agni kai. the artistic decision that went behind the fights are very similar. the music for both fights scenes, the last agni kai and battle of heroes, are the perfect songs for these scenes. as lucas said in an interview, he wanted the battle of heroes to be a sadder, more tragic version of duel of fates. both of the soundtrack for the fights are tragic. what’s occurring shouldn’t be happening but it is. its similar to the quote Herodotus said “in peace sons bury their fathers and in war fathers bury their sons.” a fight of this caliber between siblings are unnatural. but its happening due to the unnatural state of society.
now to the environment. they’re both set in a red lightning environment. while red can represent many things in storytelling, from anger to love, the driving force behind any of the red coded emotions are passion. anakin’s and azula’s driving force is to win. their faces wild with desperation that we have never seen on them before. obi wan and zuko steady and determined caused by their love of the republic/ fire nation. faces grim with the weight of what they’re doing.
the characters
the duel on mustafar and the last agni kai is the emotional conclusion to the build up we have been seen since the first movie/ season. this fight sequence is the heart of the franchise. obi wan and anakin are brothers. they have fought together and bleed together. as stated above, this battle to the death should not have happened. while zuko and azula are not as close as obi wan and anakin, they are still siblings. they are still blood. the tragedy of these two fight scenes comes from the fact that they have been pushed to the brink and now have to fight. both palpatine/ ozai have manipulated obi wan/ anakin and zuko/ azula. however, both obi wan and zuko were able to see through palp’s and ozai’s manipulation while anakin and azula fell more deep into the deception near the very end. anakin and azula were under a lot of psychological pressure right before the battle begins. the two younger siblings are having dreams/ hallucinations of the people who have played a huge role in who they are as a person- padme/ ursa.
right before the battle begins, anakin and azula have stepped into their new found roles (palp’s new apprentice and as the new firelord). while it seems like this new position of power is a reward for anakin’s and azula’s loyalty, they are nothing more than a glorified secretary, since their power is an illusion.
it is during this time when obi wan and zuko come to the mustafar/ fire nation palace to confront anakin and azula. there is a conversation where the younger siblings are priming for a fight and the duel begins.
in the beginning both obi wan and anakin and zuko and azula are on equal footing. we, the audience, are in awe of the power that is being displayed. there’s nothing and no one holding each other back (and in the zuko and azula fight they have a power up). but during this whole fight, the creators did an amazing job of showing how wrong this is (avatar straight up had iroh tell zuko that brother turning on brother is wrong). half way through the fights both anakin and azula slip. anakin over estimates his abilities to win against obi wan while azula becomes desperate at the fact that she has not yet beaten zuko. this misstep lead to their downfall in the final battle. however, obi wan and zuko (or more accurately katara) have the weight of their world on their shoulders and cannot lose; this determination does not allow them to slip up in the way anakin and azula did. the battle ends with anakin/ azula kicking and screaming at the fact that they lost while obi wan/ zuko looking forlornly at them. in their heart, both obi wan and zuko know that this should not have ended the way it did, but the unfortunate circumstances of their world and the decisions made by those around them had made it impossible for this to end otherwise.

Cicero Pig: Wait a minute...has anyone noticed that Bugs is missing too?
Daffy: (horrified) Oh no....I knew it was only a matter of time! (runs to Taz) Taz ate Bugs! (opens Taz's mouth) Bugs, I'm coming for ya, buddy!
Petunia: Daffy, Taz didn't eat Bugs. He's probably with Lola.
Daffy: That's just what Taz wants you to think!
(climbs into Taz's mouth)
Porky: G-g-g-get out of The Tasmanian Devil's mouth, D-D-Daffy!

The true mind can weather all the lies and illusions without being lost. The true heart can tough the poison of hatred without being hard. Since beginningless time, darkness thrives in the void, but always yields to purify right.

i keep thinking about zuko during the day of black sun, starting down his father who's goaded him into staying by torturing him with details of his missing mother, only to use that opportunity to try and kill him again.... only for Zuko to use a technique Ozai did not even know possible, flowing through motions that are distinctly not firebending demonstrating a power so different and deeper than Ozai could ever fathom... idk man just zuko
