Man, I think my #1 favorite aspect of book 4 of infinity train is the dialogue. Truly. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a show like that, where the conversations feel so dead on for how people actually talk. I mean, we aren’t great at conveying our emotions into words, and we sometimes make our lies as obvious as possible in hopes that the other person calls us out, and we rarely tell it like it is, and we often avoid the elephant in the room, and we’re often passive aggressive and cagey when there’s a (unspoken) conflict.
Usually I see too much honesty in dialogue, especially in kids’ shows, and especially when the conversation is about interpersonal conflict, because people don’t really talk like that. They take the kind gesture as the apology it was intended as, even if they really wanted to hear the words, and they bring up the little things that’s been bothering them instead of the big thing that’s causing all the upset. I’ve talked to a lot of people who have said the dialogue was weird or difficult to understand or awkward and yes!! yes it is!! that’s the point! Talking to people, especially the people we know really really well, is all subtext, and talking about big, important things is awkward and weird and difficult, especially when you’re a young adult, and infinity train conveyed it wonderfully.

Review: Wicked Duet by Persephone Steele
Tumblr media
I went in blind with this (no pun intended, I swear!). There were times when I was caught off-guard, that I had to put the book down for a few moments, but that did not stop me from finishing it.
The mystery and the gore made my skin buzz and I was not sure if that was a good thing or a bad thing. But I still enjoyed the experience.
Before you proceed, please take note that there will be spoilers in this review. If you haven’t read this duet yet and you want to enjoy the story and get into the ✨mystery✨ vibe, I suggest skipping this one.
Characters
I will start this section by saying these characters were the best among my favorite main characters.
Izabelle Wicked was one of my favorite heroines. She annoyed me with her rudeness, abrasiveness, and arrogance but those were a few of the reasons why I like her. Most of the time I do not like characters who monologue too much, but hers were entertaining. I love being inside her head, so to speak. She was a blind psychic so letting her emotions dictate her actions was shown perfectly in the story.
Lastly, despite having so many doubts and insisting that she did not need the heroes, I loved her thought process when she went about how her mother turned out and then she realized that she did not want to be like her and finally opened her heart.
Now, as for the heroes. I thought I would not like them nor would I care much for them. But they proved to be amazing as well.
Starting with Nicolas De Leon, the leader of the group and the one with anger issues. He was a control freak and a fucking asshole. He would always clash with Wicked (because they were both jerks) but I knew that there was more to him. I was right.
When he started to work on his issues and maturely analyzed what he needed to do to be with Wicked, god, I swooned. I was so annoyed for having a crush on a literal douchebag who was rude and toxic but was also protective and sweet for one woman. Yeah, I like that alot. Sigh, feminism jumped out of the window I supposed.
Next, Kai Zhao is the resident charming pretty boy. I was so sure that he was also going to be a typical manwhore because that was what Wicked thought of him BUT NO! Oh my god, he fell in love at first sight with her and it was so fucking cute. I screamed when I read about that. We were as blind as Wicked in this story since we discovered the truth with her.
Now, I knew that this was dark. But I thought it was because of the crime scenes and how vividly described they are, but man. Kai’s story was fucked up. Like really fucked up and I cried reading about what he had to go through. I also skimmed a lot because I could not handle how clear the picture was inside my head. And knowing how awful his backstory was and seeing how caring and happy-go-lucky he was as a character made me love him even more. I knew people like him who did not let the darkness take over their hearts and remained soft despite all the hardships. He was one of the more perfectly fleshed-out characters that I read about.
Lastly, Ezra Grayson as the deadly quiet guy. He was Wicked’s rock. Unmovable and unbreakable, except for when she was involved. I also thought that he would be a typical quiet protective guy but I was wrong again. He was a polar bear. I likened characters to polar bears who were extremely deadly and could annihilate a person but also were the sweetest marshmallows to their loved ones.
I loved the complexity of his character. He was closed off but also the only one (among the three heroes) who quickly opened up to Wicked. He seemed to be like someone who wanted to remain unseen but he also knew what he wanted and would get it. He always put Wicked first. Frankly, his devotion to her was intoxicating. I wish I could have more words to do his character justice because his characterization was one of my favorites. We love a good paradoxical character.
Plot
Gosh. Where do I even start?
I am not a huge mystery connoisseur but I will say that this was one of the few where I was not entirely sure of my deductions.
I even became suspicious of one of the main characters because I had no idea who the stalker was. The red herring in the story worked out well. Most of the time I would still be able to catch the culprit but I did not this time.
Ending
Despite my dissatisfaction with the stalker not being killed, I understood that it was the perfect form of justice. Not being able to get what they wanted was the best punishment for them.
Again, I would commend the author because I did not see that coming. I was suspicious of that woman (Abby?) and I knew that there was a reason why she was somewhat a constant in this story but I did not expect her to be the stalker. It felt like I was just as blind for not seeing things.
I wanted to say that it did not make sense but at the same time, I knew that was not true. Even when it was revealed that there was a mistress involved, and then later on confirmed that she was a witness to the accident that took away Wicked’s dad and ability to see, I did not think about her being the stalker. My focus was on the chief as the primary suspect. Even when he revealed his reasons, I was still suspicious of him. I ignored all the possible clues.
Ah, I really enjoyed this duet. This was how the mystery stalker books should be.
Rating
I gave this duet a 4 out of 5 stars.
Reading books without looking at reviews beforehand was the best way to go. It did not warp my perspective and I have a clean slate to form my own opinions.
My only problem was getting smacked by vivid descriptions of assault and torture. It was not the author’s fault, of course. I just wasn’t ready. I am familiar with dark fiction and read a lot of it. I also have experience reading extremely depraved pitch-black stuff that will leave you shaking and numb, but I was expecting all of those. Contrary to Wicked, I was not ready. Perhaps because the main character’s quirks took all the spotlight. The ambiance was light enough that I did not expect all that darkness. Then again, it was what I loved about it.

Hi Neil,
Regardless of if you ever see this I’ll be happy the sentiment was put there.
As I got into adulthood I lost touch with many of my interests and hobbies. Things like study and work seemed to take over my life and I forgot about many of the things I enjoyed that kept me sane as a child.
But after watching and reading Good Omens I’ve done 4 things:
1. Picked up the piano again after 10 years not playing just so I could learn the theme song. I’ve been at it for months and I’m usually terrible at sticking to things but I’ve promised a friend we are going to do a duet with them playing the kazoo so I have to now obviously
2. I started to draw again on a regular basis
3. I started to write again for the first time since I was a kid and found I actually have quite a passion for it. I’d like to publish at least one book some day with my own illustrations
4. I retuned to tumblr and was pleasantly surprised to find such a wonderful fandom who all love this story as much as I do. And I think it’s wonderful you are also here to watch us all adore it. And so that we can send our appreciation back to you and everyone else involved in making it come to life.
The love and care you and Terry have put into it is so clear. This story and seeing how you interact with the fandom reminded me of how important story telling and creation is to the world. And its lead me back to many things I’d thought I had lost. So thanks to you and every other creative out there, it’s easy to get stuck in our bubble and think what we’re putting out there doesn’t matter. But if you or Terry had given in to that kind of thinking we wouldn’t have Good omens! And that’s something I like to think about when I doubt what I make.
That makes me very happy.

OOOHHHH SORRY NOT TO DSMP MUSICAL POST ON YOUR DASH BUT I HAD THOUGHTS DURING MUSIC.
Ok 1. Techno would have a song in the same kind of style as be prepared, Like in terms of backing and vibes, but not about killing the king for power. Maybe instead of hyenas its the wolves.
2. There could also be a reprise of the song before but this time its a duet on doomsday between Phil and Techno. And maybe instead of many different instruments its only violin playing
3. There would be a song that Dream sings about exile and its all dark n gloomy with lots of like slow melodic beats, kind of in the style of trust in me from the jungle book
4. Ok so the musical would change the ending because cannon fucking sucked and so instead of what bullshit we got Tommy would kill Dream and he would sing a reprise of the song Dream sang at the start of exile as a song showing that Dream can no longer hurt him
5. There would also be a cheesy country style love song Ranboo sings for Tubbo and in the hypothetical musical there would be enderman in the background like cheering him on

THEME: The Locked Tomb
I’m in love with The Locked Tomb Series by Tamsyn Muir, and I know I’m not the only one! For that I am extremely grateful, because there’s quite a few ttrpg designers who also love The Locked Tomb, and have designed games meant to evoke the themes or setting of the novels. Here’s a few of my favourites!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Serpent and the Spider, by Junk Food Games.
The Serpent and The Spider is a tiny ttrpg for 2 players. One player takes the role of The Serpent, a charismatic sword-wielder. The other player takes the role of The Spider, a highly intelligent necromancer.
Your souls are bonded together. You will fight against corrupt corporations and explore your relationship.
Note that this game has references to violence, death, combat, and implied self-harm. To play the game, you need something to write with, two 4-sided dice, and two 8-sided dice.
I’ve talked about this game before as a duet game. This is probably the best game for exploring the relationship between a necromancer and their cavalier, because it’s designed to be played just between two people. It includes 9 session prompts (again, a tribute to the Nine Houses), and presents you with a setting that is inspired by The Locked Tomb while still allowing you as a pair to fill in details that will make the game work for you.
Thirsty Space Necromancers, by Understory Games.
Thirsty Space Necromancers is a Thirsty Sword Lesbians supplement based on The Locked Tomb books by Tamsyn Muir. It's Gideon the Ninth as a Powered by the Apocalypse RPG.
You play as Necromancers and Cavaliers in a space-faring culture. Paired and trained to fight together, you will solve mysteries and fight ghosts, and probably other necromancers, as you explore new planets.
This is a game that requires another game to run, but considering the tagline of Gideon the Ninth as “Lesbian Necromancers in Space”, Thirsty Sword Lesbians sounds like another great match for this kind of game. TSL focuses on love and relationships, and is also great for telling grand, epic stories. I’m interested in the additional rules to add the Dead to your game, as well as how the game plays when each player has a counterpart that they’re responsible for and/or devoted to, especially since multiple players can choose The Cavalier, while each Necromancer playbook is separate.
(Understory Games also has a collection of Locked Tomb fan rpgs, where I got most of my recommendations from!)
Heart of the Emperor, by deathmeetauthor.
Heart of the Emperor is a hack of Monsterhearts 2, centred in Tamsyn Muir's The Locked Tomb series. Rather than playing a cohort of teenagers who are secretly monsters, you may be playing a soldier of the Cohort, a teenager, or openly be a monster—perhaps even all three!
The characters of Gideon the Ninth etc. are lonely, brokenhearted, and struggle to communicate their needs and feelings, all of which are perfect for a Monsterhearts game. As with many Powered by the Apocalypse games, the focus is on how the characters relate to each-other, whether that means getting into fights, horribly misinterpreting what your crush/rival says, or uncovering deliciously horrifying secrets that will fundamentally change how you see the world. The scope of this game will be more personal than Thirsty Sword Lesbians - the future of the world isn't quite as important as your future with the the people around you.
The Empire Undying, by Glaive Guisarme Games.
You climb aboard the shuttle which is intended to convey you off this dingy planet. Embedded in the metal walls of the shuttle are bones, sun-bleached and carved with innumerable runes of protection. The only seats in the shuttle seem comfortable enough, although they have the familiar texture of human-flesh leather, tattooed over and over in a crabbed, spiky hand.
It fucking sucks. Just an abysmal experience, and the chairs make your ass hurt after like ten minutes. But if you’re going to be a necromancer there’s a whole, like, aesthetic to deal with.
Hope you like skulls, fucker.
There are two sorts of people that matter in the decrepit star empire: the necromancers who create the undead abominations upon whose skeletal backs civilization rests, and the knights whose sword duty is to defend the necromancers from undead abominations which aren't behaving right now.
In this game, you will play a group of necromancers and knights, stuck in some corner of the vast empire, attempting to solve a mystery that is, in turn, attempting to kill you all. The bad kind of "kill," the sort you don't bounce back from. Explore ancient sites and forgotten ruins, unravel conspiracies which have endured for millennia, and make out with one another, because you are hot and hurt and surrounded by bones so you have to get that tension out somehow.
Tone-wise, this game slaps. Mechanically, I like that it’s not too complex (it borrows from Lasers and Feelings) while still leaning into the number 9, which is heavily significant in The Locked Tomb. It has players explore relationships, while not necessarily expecting them to pair up - instead, you have to decide how another person’s character has power over you, which also feel so much like The Locked Tomb (think about Dulcinea’s relationship to Gideon, or the relationship between the Fifth House and the Fourth House). There’s so much to this game and it’s not even that big! If you want something that feels like it was written by Gideon herself, I’d definitely recommend checking this out.
In Extremis, by Keganexe.
In Extremis is a tabletop roleplaying game designed for 2-6 players, about fighting back the man using necromancy, that uses the LUMEN system by Spencer Campbell. Inspired by The Locked Tomb trilogy, players take on the role of exceptionally powerful witches who use their mastery of life, death, and the human condition to keep them and their own safe from other planetary invaders who want to steal their land.
As a Necromancer, you are one of a handful of hideously powerful death witches that protect the planet Hecate, the final holdout for The Coven, from the ever encroaching war of the Corvus Dominion.
In Extremis differs greatly from some of the games on this list because it focuses on combat, rather than on relationships. The game is inspired by the Locked Tomb, but doesn’t seek to replicate it. All of the players are necromancers, and all of the players are built for combat. You will go up against a terrible, powerful foe, while you yourselves are small in number, although extremely powerful. I appreciate the attempt to make this legally distinct from The Locked Tomb - there’s enough here to absolutely appeal to fans of the series, but the creator has given themselves enough license to focus on the themes of this series that appeals to theme - particularly the theme of kicking ass.
Games I’ve Recommended in the Past
Tomb Candles, by deecity. (A hack of Ten Candles)

Cordonian Karaoke: Riley Take 4
Series: Cordonian Karaoke
Fandom: The Royal Romance
Characters: Drake Walker, Liam Rys, Riley Brooks, and the rest of the gang
Rating: Fun
Warnings: Depicts drunkenness generally
Word count: 321
Everything else: Master list.
Tumblr media
It’s karaoke night in Cordonia and everyone is drunk. Drake persists in singing suggestive songs while shooting suggestive glances in Riley’s direction and dragging her up onto the stage for duets. Duets about lovers.
Riley has had enough. Leaning over she whispers softly in his ear, “I'm calling your bluff”, before making her way to the stage with a mischievous glint in her eye.
She flips through the book, chooses her song, and makes direct eye contact with Drake before giving a mesmerizing rendition of Love Karaoke by Blaire Reinhard keeping her eyes locked on him the entire time.
On her way back to her seat she drags her fingers across the back of his shoulders and then retakes her seat. Oblivious to the others at the table, she takes a long sip of her drink then makes direct eye contact with him and runs her tongue over her upper lip.
Riley: (stands up) I'll be up late in my room if anyone wants to drop by later. One time offer.
Drake: (eyes wide like a deer in the headlights, watches her leave then spins to the others) She didn't mean.... She wasn't.... You don’t think.....
Max: Dude. I'm fucking gay and even I know....
Hana: are you really this dense? (Then under her breath to herself) what the hell does she see in you?
Liam: (returning from the restroom) What did I miss?
Drake: Riley….
Max: No!
Hana: Nothing!
Liam: (retakes his seat) okay….
Drake: I’m drunk, you should go home! I mean you’re drunk; I should go home. I mean…..
Max: (leans toward him) You’re drunk and you should go home?
Drake: Yeah, thanks, buddy! Bye now! (Claps Max on the shoulder and bolts from the room).
Liam: Where’s Riley?
Max: (pulling him out of his chair) Never mind that, it’s your turn, let’s go sing! Have you ever considered men?
Liam: What?
Max: (laughs nervously) Nothing, never mind.

It's the last week to Crave the Loop!
The fridge snaps shut. The room darkens. A distant, curious yowl sounds from the other side of the house. The midnight chase is begun again. The creature craves your sugary loops, and it will not be denied. It is invulnerable. It is insatiable. It is... Kinda cute? When it's not whiskers deep in your snack, that is.

I Crave the Loop is a solo rpg about snacking and pets, in which you flee from a creepy little guy™ who's sole desire is to devour your sugary breakfast loops (or equivalent). This directly contradicts your desire to eat them without eldritch cat fuzz all over them, so grab the laser pointer, lace up your shoes, and book it or your snack is as good as gone, bud.
Using a real-life snack as your game clock, you'll race across maps of houses, dorms, apartments, conventions, and other snack-filled locales in a desperate attempt to finish your snack before a little guy like this catches you and finishes it for you:
Tumblr media
Look at him, loopless and hungy. Despondent. He's never been fed in his entire life and will never eat again (a fate my cats are convinced they share 30 minutes before dinner time).
I Crave the Loop is inspired by roguelike video games, so there's lots of variety from game to game. You've got different character origins that shape each game, you've got a diverse cast of creepy cats with unique v O i d P o W e R s, and you've got a veritable plethora of haunted maps featuring silly items and passive powers to help you escape.
It's our last week on Kickstarter, so come check us out! We're fully funded, so you're guaranteed a reward! If we can hit our next couple stretch goals our team gets a cozy little bonus and I'll add 4 more maps to the game!

(SPOILERS) My review on Hazbin Hotel (Episodes 1-4)
(Ps. I had early access and watched the 1st 2 episodes on the 12th and watched episodes 3 and 4 on the 18th on Prime due to my timezone or smth)
Episode 1
. I liked the songs, but there is one scene where Charlie is talking and then she immediately starts singing her I want song. I felt like there should have been a small melody that played before she started singing or something.
. I like the characters they’re fine with except Adam and Angel Dust. Adam (as many others have pointed out) is just Chaz as an angel and he’s just kinda annoying. Angel Dust is also kinda annoying makes sex jokes every 5 seconds, but he’s ok I guess.
. I liked Alastor in this episode, he was cool
. I honestly feel like Vaggie needs more screen time, cause compared to Angel Dust, she gets little screen time
Episode 2
. I liked Sir Pentious in this episode, he did great
. I liked both songs, but I feel like the song with Charlie and Sir Pentious should have just been a duet between the two instead of Angel Dust and Vaggie being in it, and personally I feel like the song should’ve been a bit longer.
. No hate to Joel Perez, but his accent keeps switching from American to Hispanic, and I honestly wish it didn’t switch like that
. I like Vox, he reminds me of Ratchet from the Robots movie ngl
. Alastor was also good in this episode
Episode 3
. Sir Pentious is good in this episode
. I enjoyed the new characters. Carmella Carmine kinda sounds like La Muerte from the book of life movie ngl imo
. I like Zestial, he’s chill
. the first song was ok, the second one was mid imo
. Alastor is also good in this one
Episode 4
. That ‘one’ scene was something else and I felt a bit at unease when watching it, ‘‘twas honestly sad
. I liked the duet between Husk and Angel Dust. Best song in the show so far only in front of the Charlie and Sir Pentious song
. Valentino’s voice keeps changing like I mentioned before
. I liked the brief Vox cameo
. Keith David’s singing as Husk is amazing

Link: A Robin's Song (Chapter 4)
Summary: found here
“A NIGHT TO REMEMBER: BUY YOUR PROM TICKETS NOW!”
Damian was hit in the face with banners, posters, and flyers littering the school grounds the moment he’d walked in.
“Here we go.” He sighed, preparing himself for two months of watching cheesy promposals, disgusting amounts of PDA, rejections, and annoying phrases that only served as a reminder to his nonexistent love life.
A few months had passed by, Jon and Haisley still going strong, although in Damian’s opinion, he and Jon were not.
Sure, although they considered each other best friends still, and talked at least once every day, they’d done less together. Jon was always out with Haisley, Damian taking care of his siblings and his job more so now that his father was working longer hours to keep up with the rent, despite the fact that Damian’s online presence was covering at least half of their bills and groceries.
Incidentally, Damian's Robin persona had grown big to where he was being offered contracts and agents. He denied each of them saying he already had an agent, but thank you.
(Tim preened when he found out that he was the agent Damian had.)
Robin had done a few covers, the past three hit singles having left people demanding more. His most popular video that wasn't one of his original songs was one where Jason had wrangled him into performing a duet song with him from a musical.
There hadn't been much inspiration lately, which surprisingly counted as a win. Less need for venting, less emotions killing him inside. However, as previously mentioned, kept his relationship with Jon a bit more strained. He’d gotten more used to avoiding Haisley during lunch, unfortunately meaning he was avoiding Jon, too.
He’d met some people while “in hiding” as his brother called it, a red-haired boy named Colin who’d saved him from being spotted by a teacher during lunch and they’d found that they had gym together, a person who went Akira who frequented the library and was always willing to be silent company or recommend some books, coincidentally in his AP Lit, and most recently, a girl called Skylar in his Art class who’s saved him from embarrassment when he left his sketchbook in the class, opened to a page full of doodles of Jon.
There was still hope held out that they would grow as close as they were before, although the Kent that frequented the house more now was Kon, as he, Tim, and Bart Allen, who was one of Tim’s 4 closest friends, would go to the elementary school to pick up Dick, Jason, and Bart’s little cousin/sort of brother, Wally.
It was one rainy night that it finally did happen, a football game that he’d taken a rain-check on due to Duke being out and his father on the late shift.
Jason, Cass and Steph were fully asleep, a feat to behold. Tim had been ordered to bed, technology confiscated, but knowing his brother, he would have some way of finding more.
Dick was up with a warm cup of milk with some honey and cinnamon due to a nightmare, curled up with Damian.
“You should go to bed, little bird.” he pulled the empty cup from the five year old’s grasp.
“W’nna wait for Daddy…” the child argued, although he was on the brink of falling to sleep’s clutches.
“Daddy will be there when you wake up.” Damian assured him, carrying him to the shared room at the end of the hall.
Despite the protests, he fell asleep before he was even in bed. His older brother smiled softly, brushing the hair to the side and kissing his forehead. Jason was asleep in the bed next to his, one arm hanging off the bed and clutching a book.
Damian removed it and bookmarked the page, giving him a good night kiss as well. He did the same with the rest of his siblings, exiting the oldest children’s room as a knock on the door came.
He went to answer it, expecting Duke. Instead he was met with a tearful Jon, soaking wet from the rain and the tears on his face.
The paint on his cheeks from the game was smeared, and he was still wearing his football jersey, but none of the padding, and he was panting slightly.
Damian deduced he’d run directly from the locker rooms to his house, and he ushered him inside without a second thought.
“D-Damian-” He choked out, stumbling inside and falling into the shorter boy’s arms.
“Hey, hey.” He soothed. “What’s going on?”
“H-Haisley-” the heart-broken look on his face split Damian in two, causing him to lead him to the couch and sit him down.
He let him change into some of his oversized clothes, oversized for him meaning it’d fit Jon perfect, if not a bit snug.
Water had already been boiling for tea, so he got out a cup for jon. He stood behind the boy and held a towel, running it through the raven curls in an attempt to dry them.
The sobs had quieted to sniffles, and the hair was no longer dripping, so Damian sat next to him, his own cup of tea in hand.
“So.” He said, blunt, but gentle. “You gonna tell me what’s up or did you just come here to mope?”
Jon’s voice was rusty from the disuse and crying, so his first few words were slightly broken.
“I-uh, I had a fight with Haisley. Our…first. Bad one, I mean.”
Damian’s expressions morphed into sympathy, scooting closer to let the older boy lean on him.
“What was it about?”
He hesitated, then spoke, Damian’s hand running through the damp curls as Jon leaned on his shoulder.
“I didn’t notice a cheerleader was flirting with me, and I just kept speaking to her normally, you know, and by the time I did notice, she’d gotten too close. Haisley saw the whole thing and i thought she had come to help me, cause she took me away, but she started yelling at me-”
His voice cracked. “She’d seen the whole thing and said that I was too trusting and a pushover. I-is that true, D? I mean, i’m not the smartest and this was proof that i’m stupid enough to trust anyone-”
“Jon, stop.”
This whole time he grew increasingly more annoyed at Haisley for this, it hadn’t been Jon’s fault, and nothing had warranted the reaction and words she’d said. It was normal to be a little pissed, but that’s sorted out by communication, not harsh phrasing.
“You aren't stupid, and you didn't do anything wrong. It’s not your fault that you didn't catch on early, and if Haisley likes you like she says she does, she’d understand that. You should talk it out, both of you. I have a feeling that you didn't get a word in edgewise.”
He’d come close to crying again, but had refrained, leaning into Damian’s warmth. They stayed like that until the rain let up, Jon hugging him tightly before he left the Wayne’s.
“Thanks, D.”
It gave him a surge of some unexpected emotion, the way the other boy watched him with such reverence in his eyes.
It felt wrong, this joy, the spark of…hope.
He shouldn’t have been feeling like this, not for someone who was happily in a relationship.
But is he really happy? His mind taunted temptingly. How much more can you take? How much more can Haisley hurt him?
He shook his head, shoving the dark thoughts back.
No.
He would not surrender to his own urges so easily, and he would never if it meant hurting Jon.
_____________________________________________________________
On Monday, two days after Jon had come to the Waynes, Damian had stuck by his friend, Jon avoiding Haisley at all costs.
This kept up throughout the week, until Jon had gone to her with his tail between his legs, something that Damian had firmly advised against, seeing as she was the one who jumped to blame.
This was only the beginning of the downfall, arguments getting louder, happening more frequently, and towards the end, Jon fighting back. Damian had had the unpleasant experience of sitting in the middle of one, although he loved watching Jon fight back when she went too far.
Many times, they would end up on the Waynes front porch, or the Kents backyard, Jon leaning on Damian for comfort.
It was one of these nights where they watched the stars spread across the sky, Jon’s head in Damian’s lap.
He could pretend, for a minute, that this was real, that all of this here was for them two. These moments were savored, the small touches and honeyed words.
“Hey, Dami.”
Damian paused in playing with his curls, responding with a simple, “Hey, Jon.”
“You know about prom coming up? You gonna go?”
Damian paused. “Dunno.”
“Can I tell you something?”
“You can always tell me anything, you know that.”
“I don’t think I want to take Haisley to prom. I…I don’t even know how much longer we’re gonna last, the way these things are going.”
Something absolutely explodes in him, overwhelming his person with hope and excitement and disgust.
Disgust at himself for this.
“I see.” he settled on. Jon must have seen the emotions battle across his face because he turned a kicked puppy expression to him.
“You…don’t think I’m a bad person for this, do you?” his voice was shaky, perhaps on the verge of tears.
Damian was quick to soothe him, jumping in with an “I could never.”
“You deserve happiness, and if you feel like she’s hurting you, or you don’t feel that way anymore, you have to tell her. Especially if you don’t feel that way, because that could end up hurting the both of you.”
It was silent, the older boy absorbing his words. Then he smiled.
Just a small one, enough to see the pearly whites peak from soft pink lips. It was one that held the world to Damian, and however small, it made his heart skip a beat.
He wanted that smile to be directed towards him forever, to burn it into his memory along with all of his favorite memories of the boy.
It would stay forever, even if they wouldn’t.
After all, everything breaks at sometime, even the things created from the best and built to last.
“Thank you, D. Say, if I do ask Haisley, would you still come? To prom, I mean. Just cause she’s gonna wanna be with her girls and i’d like my company, maybe we can even find you a date!”
Damian paused, snapping out of the haze.
“I could find a group to go with, if you would like me to. I do have friends besides you, you know.” He teased lightly.
“Of course.” He stuck his tongue out at him. “But I’m still your number one boy.”
“Always.” Damian said, without hesitation, however the admission might have seemed.
He supposed it was possible that it could have been too blunt, as Jon’s pale complexion sported splotches of pink after, his blue eyes avoiding his gaze.
“It’s getting late. I should go.” He stood, shaking out his hair from where Damian had been toying with it.  “See you tomorrow, D. Thank you for…all of it.”
“Of course” He stood as well, watching as Jon stuck his hands in his pockets and made his way up the street, watching until he turned the corner and disappeared.
With a  quiet sigh, he walked back inside, shedding his day clothes for sweats  and a loose top.
However tempting it might have been for them, his siblings said nothing as he settled on the couch between his two youngest brothers, scribbling words mindlessly.
He had half a song when he retired for the night, burning in shame as he read the cheerful, wanting words on the page. There was half a mind to tear it out, shred it into pieces. Guilt tore into him, the scribbles feeling as though he was exploiting what Jon had told him and wrapping it up in pretty paper to serve it to the masses.  But another part, the one he despised and was repulsed by on a daily basis, told him to keep it.
Indecisive, and acting much like a child, he shoved it under his bed, the page burning a hole in his pillow the rest of the night.
_____________________________________________________________
It was back to the same old thing the next day, Jon and Haisley making up and going on as if nothing had happened.
It was times like these that Damian would feel actual concern, more than usual. If this cycle of pain continued, surely he would have to step in.
He ranted about this to Colin in P.E, who’d shrugged, and then Skyler in Art who had seen many similar things in her own friends, and now to Akira during lunch. They watched him pace, whisper-scream because it was a library and then slump in a beanbag chair.
“ Why do I love him?” He whispered, surprising even himself. He turned to Akira with a plea. They raised an eyebrow at him, bookmarking a page and saying gently.
“This is the first time in the twenty rants you’ve gone on this month that you’ve told me you love him. That means something. I know what, but I'm not going to tell you.”
“Because this is the part of the story where the main character has to figure their own way out with only the cryptid words of the friend?” Damian asked, voice dripping with sarcasm.
“Yes, actually. And my cryptid wisdom for you has probably been yelled at you by everyone else you talked to today. It’s to tell him. And at the very least, do something with yourself that helps you. I don’t wanna hear the ‘but my best friend’ bullshit, just say it, and if you’re as good as friends as you say you are, he’ll let it go and y’all will go on with your normal life.”
Akira stuck their nose back into the book, letting Damian mull over the words that he’d been plagued with the whole day. They weren’t wrong, Colin had said the same thing at the beginning of sprints and Skylar had recounted past experiences.
His siblings had been drilling this into him for the past two years and it had never seemed in any way possible, but now it might even be necessary.
He got up as the bell rang, departing to his next class.
He deduced that if Jon didn’t ask Haisley, and they actually did break up, there was no rule against him taking Jon.
If he was ever going to tell him, it would be that week of prom. There was a month left, and as Damian entered his house, he ran for his bed and pulled out the half-finished song.
This was it. If he was truly going through with this, it would be on his terms, through his preferred medium.
Song.
