Yeah, I also like this! This took effort and the repair actually did what the previous owner needed it to do! The previous owner might have been in a place where there were no bookbinders around (or they couldn't afford to have it rebound) and had to figure things out for themselves. Oh and also it wasn't done with tape!
Cellophane tape is the worst, but gentle sandpapering seems to be the best method of removal. I slapped together this beveled sandpaper tool out of mat board scraps
Summer 2023 Cathleen A. Baker Fellow Katarina Stiller worked on treatments for pop-up books from the William A. Gosling Pop-up and Movable Books Collection --- part of our Children's Literature Collection.
Here are Schneewittchen (1961) and Rotkäppchen (1960) --- both illustrated by Vojtěch Kubašta and published by Carlsen Verlag GMBH --- before and after treatment!
After treatment - beautiful ledger from 1821. I repaired every signature, resewed it, replaced the leather spine and decided to put on a hollow tube, to help support the fragile pages as well as reinforce the cover/board reattachments. 121 hours of treatment
hey book conservators out there - what's the best way to repair the dust cover (aka book jacket apparently) tear that you can see on the left? we used to work in a museum so we at least know not to use sticky tape of any kind, but we're at a loss as to the best way to preserve this
we just got this book in the post - note the illustrator Pauline Baynes who did the original artwork for the Narnia books and is the reason why we bought this book, though we will read it as well as share some of the pictures here
In exactly 61 days from today we're going to get RWARB the movie (I'm overly excited!)
Painted my nails red accordingly and started a book club with my friend to read, take notes and most importantly mark what MUST be in the film, good luck to us all ❤️🤍💙🇬🇧🇺🇸
A book from 1788 that is in the process of being repaired (by me!) I removed some of the damaged covering material (tape is evil!!) and now you can see how the boards were attached to the textblock. The ends of the sewing supports (cords) were laced into holes in the board and glued down. Neat!
Things are slow in the lab, so im going to do an overhaul of this book-
The spine is cracked, the sewing is broken in several places, and some pages and plates are coming loose, so I'm going to disbind, clean the spine, repair the sewing and any pages that need it, re-line the spine to make it more supportive, and case it back into the library binding with new endsheets

Our summer 2023 Cathleen A. Baker Fellow, Katarina Stiller, also worked on two calligraphic albums from the Islamic Manuscripts Collection, including one album of pieces calligraphed by Hasan Rıza Efendi (d.1920)
