The Joy Of Giving
Our third spiritual discipline makes people nervous: Giving. Maybe it would help you to know that giving isn’t just about money and that the right attitude about giving leads to divine provision, encouragement, and even greater rewards.

A lil rogue and tired and incomplete thought on Stars.
Now, I know the danger of referencing anything stars-related thanks to one of my fics, and thanks to the viscerally emotional reaction it garners, I have since conflated any star symbolism to be a beautiful tragedy, catapulting my straight to the end of a star's life cycle, over whether it goes out in a supernova.
Tragic.
But I had A Moment last night in Bible Study, where I was taken back to the original wonder and beauty of stars that made me drawn to the analogy in the first place.
It was surrounding a well-known verse, nestled in a humbling passage to begin with. This is the translation I was familiar with--
Tumblr media
Innocent and straightforward enough. There is a gravity in the light, a seriousness but mixed in awe and reverance. Easy to understand, checkmark, moving on. But last night we were given the passage in a different translation that made me zero in on the end of verse 15--
Tumblr media
This. This is the sort of stars that captured me to write what I did. The different and peculiar, yes, but in a stunning and pure sort of way. When I wrote The Brightest Star (not the sun) it wasn't written to focus on the tragedy of it. It was highlighting the innocent perspective, the different-ness that stemmed from a pure motivation. The result of Minho's life isn't the point, at least not the temporary result-- it's all the living and doing that happens in between. It's the outpouring of love that's meant to be mildly unknowable and unique and stunningly odd in it's beauty. A sort of lesson that rises above morals into intentions, a reminder of bitter-but-mainly-sweet sorts on the need for something different inside a person to grow that variety of love.
That is the sort of star I'm enraptured with. That is the sort of star I want to be.

I recently read this study book that talked about women in the Bible, specifically how they fit into the narrative of history even when the men around them silenced and ignored them. It was a good read*, and raised a lot of questions, but it fell into a track that’s personally frustrating:
Most of the women it focused on have at least several verses about them and often chapters or even books; Sarah, Esther, Tamar, Hannah, and Mary of Nazareth for example.
That’s well and good, and it’s easier to write a detailed study or devotional with that much source material, but I want to learn about the other women.
Shiphrah and Puah, the Hebrew midwives from Exodus, who looked Pharaoh’s men in the eye and said, “We aren’t trying to save all the male babies; Hebrew women tend to have easy labors and we often show up too late.”
Abigail, the widow who caught King David’s eye and became a footnote in his story.
Peter’s mother-in-law, who, upon being healed of a fever, jumped up to feed everyone.
Jephthah’s daughter, his beloved only child, who suffered for his rash promise. (Hands-down one of my least favorite stories in the whole Bible, and that includes Lot and his daughters.)
Of course there’s Leah, too; the overlooked, unloved eldest daughter, the despised and abused first wife, whose son fathered the tribe of the Messiah.
They are there, in the margins and the shadows, and they have so much to teach us. I will never tire of hearing about Ruth or Hannah or Mary and Martha (unless you try to do Martha dirty), but I want to hear about the other women, too.
Heck, let’s talk about Job’s wife! That woman has a lot to teach us.
*I queued this before I finished the book. It turned out to be not such a good read....

Faith Made Practical and Applicable
. 1 Therefore, my brothers, whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, stand firm thus in the Lord, my beloved. 2 I entreat Euodia and I entreat Syntyche to agree in the Lord. 3 Yes, I ask you also, true companion, help these women, who have labored side by side with me in the gospel together with Clement and the rest of my fellow workers, whose names are in the book of life. 4 Rejoice in the…

Four Descriptors of the Man or Woman of God
I have two objectives with this post. To be biblical To not be overly complicated. What are the best descriptors of someone who walks with God?  It would hard to do better than the description of Job given three times in the early chapters of the book of Job. Let’s try them on. “There was a man in the land of Uz whose name was Job;and that man was blameless, upright, fearing God and turning…

REMARKABLE RESOLUTIONS
The Two Books explores the Resolutions of Jonathan Edwards and the Power of God to accomplish them in our own lives as He perfectly ordains.
The Resolutions of Jonathan Edwards and the Power of God to Accomplish them as He Ordains There is no doubt that Jonathan Edwards was a remarkable young man even among his contemporaries – and all the more when contrasted with today’s average teenager.  Though coined near the turn of the century, it wasn’t until the postwar boom of the 1940s that the term “teenager” entered common use.  Today,…

Do You Carry?
Headed to Lubbock last weekend, we made a pit stop for lunch in Brownwood TX to eat at a favorite restaurant, Underwood’s BBQ (established in 1945). Underwood’s BBQ is a family-owned business and now the 3rd generation, great grandson carries on the business. Mr. Underwood welcomed us in and gave us a play-by-play of all the delights that the buffet provided. He pointed us to a picture on the…
