reading nook & current reads 29/feb/24
Tumblr media Tumblr media
behold, the cosy reading nook ft an energy drink.
i haven't been doing well mentally for a (long) while so i only have the mental capacity and attention span for easy-to-read books. right now im able to stomach:
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.
An Unsuitable Job For A Woman by P. D. James (a detective novel).
Sailing To Byzantium by W. B. Yeats (a short poetry anthology).
all three books were thrifted across the second-hand stores of Dublin.
my interest in fantasy schools/magical school books has been piqued so im currently looking for recs. i know about the Harry Potter series, the Scholomancer trilogy, book one of the Poppy Wars trilogy, and Aurian but aside from those im stumped. pls share your book recs :(

Does anyone have book recs for books that make you feel better when you're sad or stressed, or just happy when you read them? I had a wee bit of a mental breakdown over Christmas and am in the process of getting better from that but need books to distract me.

Reading list! (For me)
(Looking for recs)
My following, interestingly, contains a variety of leftists, including both (some) tankies and (but mostly) anarchists (you're all welcome here), so that makes yall a decently diverse audience to ask for book recs.
These are books that I have not read but want to
My current list is:
- Autobiography of Malcom X
- State and Revolution - Lenin
- Conquest of Bread - Kropotkin
- Socialism: Utopian and Scientific - Engels
- Che's Autobiography
- Mao's Little Red Book
- Black Marxism - Robinson
- Wretched of the Earth - Fanon
- My Dissillusionment in Russia - Goldman
- Towards a Gay Communism - Mieli
- Are Prisons Obselete? - Davis
- The Russian Revolution in Ukraine - Makhno
- Marxism, Freedom and the State - Bakunin
- Black Power: The Politics of Liberation - Ture
- The Permanent Revolution - Trotsky
- Cybernetic Revolutionaries: Technology and Politics in Allende's Chile - Medina
I am interested in a variety of leftist perspectives, hence while you'll see work from both Marxists and Anarchists that opposed them in here. I am interested in various types of works, theory, history, etc. I am also interested in intersectional works! If you have any revolutionary feminist or queer or POC book recs please let me know.

This is a plea for help, everyone!
I need AUDIOBOOK RECS.
I was a dumbass who didn’t realize I’ve been paying for a Libro.fm subscription for the past eight months. My usual go-to audiobooks are Star Wars ones (because the production quality on those are top tier), but they aren’t available for credit purchases on Libro.
I will read pretty much every genre except romance on audio.

Help !! I need book reccs!
I’ve recently got access to Libby and other library services, and I really want to start listening to more audiobooks!
Here’s some books I have read that I do enjoy, and maybe that will help?
The Secret History ; It’s the OG and undefeated dark academia book lol
Based on a True Story ; I love adult women crimes
Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep ; idk it was a good time, I like sci fi
Dragonflight / Dragonriders of Pern ; I heard there’s a benevolent AI in the later books and also like long forgotten human tech and that’s my fave thing
Yellowface ; I work in publishing i just enjoyed it, it was like reading industry drama
Circe ; it described a femininity I have never experienced but was so good
Dracula ; look we all love it actually
The Moth Diaries ; it’s good I love an obsessed and unreliable narrator
The Ace of Spades: I do read a lot of YA for work but this one with a focus away from romance and two incredibly compelling leads is just really good 😭
( I don’t read much!! )
Specific genres/ things!!:
Adult / mostly adult characters
Contemporary
Dark academia
Mystery / thriller
Sci Fi / cyberpunk, or near future
Fantasy (any, I’m open!!)
Worlds that involve long forgotten and recently rediscovered technologically advanced civilisations
Secret societies, cults and sacrificial lambs
I of course generally prefer books that center women, poc & lgbtq characters!!
Thank you u_u feel free to send me asks or replies!!

A Request for help from the fellow aro writers (or Aros in general, idk)
So, a bit of background - I've recently come into my own aromanticism (which I kind of repressed because I thought my need for safety and comfort could only be fulfilled by a romantic relationship).
I'd like to be able to create a sense of safety and comfort for myself by writing, which I previously thought I did by forcing my characters into romantic relationships (even if I couldn't write those relationships well, or in a way that compelled me. I thought it was a skill issue, but I think it's more than that for right now).
I've written found family stuff as well, but I need help writing an aromantic character in order to accept myself, while still getting them safety and comfort outside of the traditional romantic relationship ending, which I really don't want, and as of now, writing stuff like that is making me feel worse.
So... a request for help: how do I write meaningful arcs for aro characters that don't feel like forced romances, or revolve around romance (considering my own situation and history of forcing myself to mask my lack or romantic attraction). I just want to write a safe fictional universe for myself, and I keep failing at it, and I feel really bad about it... so I was hoping someone else could help direct me to books/fanfics/ideas on how to write stuff that feels safe in the way I want myself to feel irl.
Sorry if it doesn't make sense.... and I'm open to questions? idk how to end this except if you decide to offer your input, I thank you.

I need a book that feels like Blue Eye Samurai
and by this I mean a book that depicts Medieval Japan similarly
like, don’t get me wrong, I’m also obsessed with the show plotwise, characterwise (and everythingwise), but I’ve been looking for the book with similar atmosphere and setting for ages
and the show just reminded me how futile my search was 😭 please, I beg you, if anyone has something in mind……

I need romantacy book recs with main love interests who aren’t asshole men that treat everyone awfully and do awful things under the guise of “oh well hes ‘morally grey’ and has tattoos and a tragic backstory so everything he does is fine”
Where are my books with loyal knight love interests who are just trying to do the right thing ?? (I need more knights in my books you don’t get it theres nothing hotter then a man in armor who just wants to do good even if the country hes serving Isn’t)

People of tumblr help me! Oddly specific book rec request!!!!
I’ve wanted to get back into reading (it’s been working I read dps book version since I already love the movie, started rereading the hobbit, finished this poison heart which I started like 3 years ago and was 70% through, and finally started the secret history)
But I’ve been craving a specific (Niche?) genre of literature because fiction has me in a certain mood??
Does anyone have any book recs that are have these vibes:
- life is strange or gravity falls type story (Pacific Northwest, forests and fog maybe some cryptids or supernatural stuff)
-not straight up horror- like if it has creechurs they are a little spooky and there’s “something strange about this town” that’s cool but it’s not like constant horror and death more like nature being mildly creepy and supernatural, maybe there’s a mystery to solve or it focuses on the characters similar to life is strange
- not a must in case there is an older book that fits the vibes but it would be cool if it had queer characters or just representation some diff groups of people in general
-if I think of other existing media that has the vibes, I’ll put it here (Kids at summer camp create secret club and befriend cryptdids vibes? Or maybe they get powers from an old journal?)
-I’d also be down if it was like vampires(love them) or ghosts(pretty cool)
(Also due to booktok actively trying to murder me in like 2021- little to no spice please and thank you)
Hope someone actually sees this and it’s not too hard of a request
Im sure this genre has a name but I don’t know what it is
I guess oddly specific questions is what Reddit is for but I have used Reddit like 1 time in my life so-

hi i need some help!
i am going to be attending a christian university in the fall. this school is funded by a religion that believes in very traditional gender roles, as well as marriage being between one man & one woman. it's bad enough that you can be expelled if you are found to be dating someone of the same sex.
with that, i know i will not be able to take any classes on gender and sexuality that don't align with those beliefs. but as a closeted queer person myself, i so desperately want to learn more about those subjects. i just have to do it outside the school setting.
if any of you have recommendations for books, textbooks, video essays, free lecture series, etc., on gender, sexuality, or queerness in general that you recommend, i would so greatly appreciate it!!
