WHEN THE STARS ALIGHT by CAMILLA ANDREW
Last week I FINALLY got the physical copy of this wonderful book in my hands ;_;
Please DO click on the images to it in its full glory. I had to contain myself so I wouldn't post EVERY singular piece of art in the interior: the drop caps, the chapter headers... Now that I have it in front of me I really want to highlight how beautiful it is; how much it's a testament to the love the author has for the story and how she wants to make it a wondrous experience for the reader's senses (sounds pedantic? maybe. BUT IT'S THE TRUTH).
Personally, I bought it here; it took only a few days to arrive (if anyone asks I was VERY patient and calm and did NOT repeatedly ask the mailman about it), and it's in perfect state. If you check the author's pages (look up @aninkwellofnectar) you can see how to get the ebook as well, but this was one I wanted to read and hold in all its glory :P
(which I plan to do in the next few days. the final, definite version! I can't wait)

reviews volume four: today, tonight, tomorrow
academic rivals to lovers with an engaging plot by rachel lynn solomon!
rating:  ⭐ ⭐ ⭐
age rec: 15+
synopsis: rowan roth and neil mcnair are sworn enemies. but on their last day of high school, they form an unlikely partnership to win their last game as a cohort and discover that hey. maybe the other isn't so bad after all.
my review (small spoilers!): i genuinely love the plot so much and also the trope. academic rivals to lovers?? COUNT ME IN! it's so fun to see rowan and neil's relationship change through the novel and an unlikely friendship develop, which blossoms into love. however, this is also sort of its downfall. this book is set over one day, and while neil has liked rowan for a while, she basically falls in love with him on the day. which i think is a little unrealistic and i got a bit peeved at. because to me love isn't an emotion you can conjure up in a day but takes a while to come to life. i think though it was just a slight miscommunication for me because rowan has spent all of high school with neil and i think that day might just be the day she realises she loves him but yeah. solomon once again brings up themes of absent parents and being ostracized for being different (in this case, it's their jewish heritage) in a way that doesn't seem like a lecture but is well woven into the narrative. it creates an emotional part as well since it's not just all happies of them enjoying the game and competition and whatnot; it shows their other, very real negative emotions which i also love. there is an intimate scene at the end which i thought was kinda unnecessary (as far as i remember it's not explicit) but linked with the comment i made about falling in love above, it sorta put me off a little. i also realised that this was something i felt after seeing haley pham address it (i freakin love haley pham i got a lot of my recent reads from her! she inspired me to get back into my bookworm era <3). overall though, loved the writing, love the plot, love the pairing of mcnightmare and artoo :D

and you have an illness, and it might not have caused your leg to fall off or your spine to break in half, but your hands are all swollen, and your leg is next to me here, and I can feel how hot your knee is, and that’s not some kind of euphemism. And that’s not even to mention that I’m kind of the poster child for the fact that, even if you looked completely normal, even if your hands were perfect and your knee was…knee-temperature, that doesn’t mean you’re healthy, necessarily, because invisible illnesses are a thing. I look fine most of the time. Stunning, in fact
