Sample (tw violence and blood!)
She's fast. I hardly see her as she bolts towards the soldier, dagger drawn; it only processes that she’s hit him when he collapses. She whirls as the other lackey moves towards her, dagger soaring through the air in one fluid motion and landing in his chest. He hits the ground with a thunk.
In a flash she’s at his side, yanks the weapon from his body. Blood sputters. She huffs and blows her hair from her face, sidestepping the growing puddle. Finally, she faces the general, and she lowers her chin with a grimace like an animal spotting it’s prey.
His reaction is distinctly anticlimactic.
The man stands at ease, observing the scene carefully. He looks almost.. bored.  I see him square her up, like he'd done with me; she must see it too, because she tenses and sets her jaw.
“Say mercy,” I hear him murmur.

i’m so attached to these sillies i hope you find them interesting :)

7. Any media/fandom you will avoid at all costs?
personally speaking i make a point of avoiding n.eil g.aiman and anything related to him. i know there are legitimate criticisms against him which i cant remember atm (bad memory day </3) but my dislike for him goes back longer than people have made posts about it. it all started when i was reading this anthology of short horror fiction and i understand that the thing about anthologies is that due to the variety there are bound to be some authors and/or selections i won't like for whatever reason and that's just part of the process. HOWEVER. at that point i had never read one of his works before but i'd heard a lot about him. so i read the selection and it sucked. i don't remember what it was about but i do remember it was a challenge to slog through and i was grateful for when it was over. i was disappointed because even then he'd been hyped up and maybe this was just a bad selection of his work but in any case it did not make a good impression on me and i moved on. flash forward to at least a few years later and i'm reading a different anthology. "horror of the decade" ed. by ellen datlow, something i never finished which requires its own post but to sum up some of her selections DEFINITELY should not have been hailed "best of the decade." they shouldn't have been selected as good horror at all if in my opinion. but anyway g.aiman was on the bookjacket and i was like *sigh* okay well im not really looking forward to it but i guess i'll give it a shot especially since it was one of the shorter entries. and then i read it and it fucking sucked. it was ass. it was some stupid story about sailors lost at sea who resorted to cannibalism or something and i wanted to like it but i just couldn't get behind his writing. at that point, to me, it felt like he'd just been included so that his name could be slapped on the cover and they selected one of his works at random. it felt a lot like quality didn't matter for some of the selections as much as the name or maybe filling up space. or perhaps it's the editor's personal choice which is why i dislike datlow as an editor. and dont get me wrong there was a few REALLY, REALLY good selections in that volume but g.aiman's was NOT one of them. and it just felt like an utter waste of time and a joke because there was nothing impressive or noteworthy about his writing or storytelling ability and what always makes my dislike worse is when people's fanbases have to hype them up as a god-send or revolutionary. now i am aware that maybe these were just. bad selections and not representative of his full body of work and to that i say too bad i dont care. and i am also aware that there are probably fans of his i am mutuals with who love his work which is fine great good for them this is not directed @ them but it's irrelevant. because i think he sucks and he's overrated and exacerbates it all is that he's on tumblr as like the resident uwu celebrity author or whatever and it's like. you come onto the silly little blogging site where i reblog silly images with my friends and mutuals and make me not only hear about him but make me see his TAKES? his posts? JAIL! JAIL FOR 1000 YEARS! and in any case it doesn't really matter the block button is free and filtering tags exist but also if ONE more person recs his books to me i will explode. i dont want to read him i do not care i dont think he's more noteworthy or talented than anyone else on the scene (not that i am aware of the scene) i just do not care and do not want to hear about him. yeehaw <3

I’ve always been enamored with book covers (and books). It would be a dream come true to supply other designers with my paintings and art for the covers they design. So I started making some more mock covers. And I’m changing the site to reflect all of the creative avenues I want to pursue again. #shedesignsbooks #bookcover #coverdesign #judgebymycovers #bookcovers #bookcoverdesign #bookstagram #bookjacket #coverartist #bookstagrammer #graphicdesign #graphicart #artstock #artofinstagram https://www.instagram.com/p/Cf9sRpsOhl-/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

A happy find: one of today’s tasks has been wrapping vintage dust jackets in acetate to protect them. In this book ‘Shelley in Italy’ designed by Keith Vaughan I was delighted to find a postcard from the author and publisher John Lehmann himself inscribed ‘I hope you will accept this little gift, dear John, more for the spirit in which it is sent than for what it is - John L’. The book itself is dedicated ‘John Morris with affectionate wishes John Lehmann.’ Morris (1895-1980) was a literary figure, who worked at the BBC in the 1940s and 50s. He took part in two attempts to climb Everest in the 1930s (once with Tenzing Norgay as his Sherpa) and in his frank autobiography ‘Hired to Kill’ wrote about coming to terms with his homosexuality whilst in the army. He was Professor of English Literature, Keio University and lecturer at Imperial and Bunrika Universities, Tokyo from 1938. He became head of the BBC Far Eastern Service 1943–1952, and controller for the BBC Third Programme 1952–1958. From February 1943 to October 1943 he worked in the same department as George Orwell, at 200 Oxford Street. Stephen Spender described Morris in his Journals as: “A not very daring promoter of the cause of culture, cruelly teased by his friend E.M. Forster, who referred to him as 'the pudding'.” He was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in the 1957 New Year Honours, and appeared as a castaway on the BBC Radio programme Desert Island Discs on 16 February 1959 (Favourite track: Sonata in B Flat Minor (Opus 35) by Frédéric Chopin played by Rachmaninov, Book: The Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Luxury: Soap and a piano). It joins the dots with Lehman’s Ex Libris bookplate (designed by Vaughan) which I posted on here a couple of weeks ago, and recent thinking about @nancy_cadogan_art and her show in the @keats_shelley_house_rome . I get so excited by these bits of bibliophile ephemera and marginalia as they connect me directly to the authors, artists, publishers and readers, and their friends and loved ones. #bibliophile #bibliophilelife #book #modernbride #keithvaughan #johnlehmann #design #ephemera #bookjacket #queerart #gayart #lgbtqhistory (at Brighton and Hove) https://www.instagram.com/p/CKHMpAEFEki/?igshid=i9oubmiljdj1

The Second cover ive chosen is Matilda by Roald Dahl illustrated by Quentin Blake.
I chose this cover because again it displays colour and a simple sketch. I like how he has added the texture of the ink splodge as a background to the title. I want to add some cleaver texture possible from analogue experiments to my cover so this is something that has sparked ideas.
Again the title and author are very prominent, everyone knows Roald Dahl is a great author for kids so his name being in large font is an eye catcher especially for adults or for children who have read his books before. It sells the author which is a smart move.

Seen While Reading……

This is one of the most recognisable book covers ever released. Designed in 1925 and the book’s first cover, it was painted by Francis Cugat and titled “Celestial Eyes.”  I love it, always have, and hopefully will one day find a secondhand copy of it. However….

I didn’t know this little bit of trivia - in each iris, there is a floating, naked woman.
Why? No explanation has ever been discovered!
(via F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby – Francis Cugat (1925))
