Realm Breaker
Tumblr media
Author:
Victoria Aveyard
Publisher:
Harper Teen
Content:
A strange Darkness is growing in the War.d Even Corayne an-Amarat can feel it, tucked away in her small town at the edge of the sea. Fate knocks on her door, in the form of a mystical immortal and lethal assassin, who tell Corayne that she is the last of an ancient lineage – with the power to save the world from destruction. Because a man who would burn kingdoms to the ground is raising an army unlike any seen before, bent on uprooting the foundations of the world. With poison in his heart and a stolen sword in his hand, he’ll break the realm itself to claim it. And only Corayne can stop him.
Alongside an unlikely group of reluctant allies, Corayne finds herself on a desperate journey to complete an impossible task, with untold magic singing in her blood and the fate of the world in her shoulders.
My Review:
I have mixed feelings about this book. I liked a lot of things, but I wasn't really blown away by the book.
What I particularly liked about the book was the world building and magic Victoria Aveyard created in this book. The whole world with its secrets, the pirates, the lords, the magic and especially the dark enemies were great and really have a lot of potential.
The characters and the group of main characters, who fight for a common cause despite their differences, have just as much potential.
Unfortunately, the book didn't bring these great elements together well enough and didn't build relationships between the characters, but also between the world and the magic. A lot of things only happened superficially, which is often normal for the first part of a fantasy book series, as a lot has to be introduced to the reader first.
Nevertheless, I was particularly disappointed to see how such a great group of characters and individuals could find so little common ground and really become a team on such a dangerous journey.
The fact that the book couldn't quite captivate me was also due to the fact that the narrative perspectives of the 6 main characters kept switching. This took its toll on the harmony of the story and was unnecessary in my opinion.
However, I liked the idea that brought the main characters together and their fight to save their own world. Also really great were the portrayals of the villains and the atmosphere that was built around them. Here Voctoria Aveyard did exactly what I felt was missing with the main characters and brought them together in their dark endeavours.
Also the cliff-hanger at the end of the book really surprised me and brought tension into the story that had been missing so far. For me, this story really has a lot of potential, especially because of the interesting world with its many different facets and the individual characters, who just need to be brought together in a sensible way. Despite everything, I will continue reading this series and hope that the second part will finally really blow me away.
Resume:
I will definitely continue reading this book series. The story has a lot of potential, especially with the world building, the magic and the individual characters. However, the first part definitely lacked relationships, chemistry and a proper connection between the characters and the world. I hope this changes in the second part of the book series.

Sienna Frost’s Obsidian: The Awakening--A Book Review
Two nations. Two cultures. One trapped in the narrow alleys and quarters of their tightly packed city; the other trapped in ancient feuds and traditions. Both are determined to exist. Frost’s novel holds no punches and is as sharp as the rock from which it is named. In Frost’s own words, each of her characters are like obsidian–sharper and harder because they have been broken. The story opens with a captured woman facing the man that slaughtered her people, the Vilarhiti of the White Desert. He demands information from her–information that would lead to the demise of her culture as she knows it. But this Bhavari woman is strong and refuses to speak even under penalty of death. So her captor chooses life as her punishment–she will live as his prisoner, his wife, and be forced to watch any children born to her be raised by her enemy and transformed into the next conqueror of her people. Next we meet Hasheem, a former male prostitute turned assassin who now flees the city that used up his youth for its pleasures. Hasheem, too, is one of these sharp-edged people, and this flight to freedom drives him into the White Desert where his ability to survive in the dark alleys of the city will be of no help. Little does he or either nation know that his escape will signal the resurgence of conflict, shaking both peoples to their very core. Obsidian is a dark tale of political intrigue, secrets, depravity, and love. Each of the characters flow with passion–hatred, desire, ambition. Each character wants something and will stop at nothing to achieve their goals. They are broken. They are survivors. They are dangerous. They are Obsidian itself. This story is not for the faint of heart. Frost takes off the rose-colored sheen of the world and explores deeply the dark, hidden places of human existence. With beautiful prose, exceptional story-telling, and captivating visuals, she brings the reader along on a journey that keeps them turning pages, drinking in more. Her characters worm their way into your heart and mind, and you find yourself thinking about them hours after the book has been closed. If you are up for the soul challenge, I recommend this book for you.

Blurb:
The last person Eglinton Echoes member Ashleigh Lynch expected to see across the table from her was her ex, Marcus Fredericks. Eight years ago when they were in love, she was a law student and he was a construction worker, not nearly good enough for her elitist family. But times have changed. Now she’s a lawyer, and he owns the development company threatening the playing fields she’s been engaged to protect.
Her family managed to crush her dreams and her confidence back then, and seeing Marcus again has rocked her to the core. But as talks over the playing fields continue, they are forced to confront each other again and again, and even the hardest hearts aren’t always impervious to old, tender feelings.
But rekindling their romance won’t be easy. They are on different sides of a dispute, and Ashleigh has caught the eye of a charming guy from the city’s planning department. When the development project is threatened and Ashleigh discovers who her real enemy is, her very world begins to crumble around her, and not even her precious music is safe. Can she find the inner strength to deal, at last, with an old threat and reclaim the happiness that was ripped away from her eight years ago?
This musical reimagining of Jane Austen’s beloved Persuasion will have you cheering the characters on, pulling you into their world and into their hearts.

Crescent City (Band II)
Tumblr media
Autor/in:
- Sarah J. Maas
Verlag:
- dtv Verlag
Inhalt (Klappentext):

I will explain; the enjoyment was just from the too intense consciousness of one’s own degradation; it was from feeling oneself that one had reached the last barrier, that it was horrible, but that it could not be otherwise; that there was no escape for you; that you never could become a different man; that even if time and faith were still left you to change into something different you would most likely not wish to change; or if you did wish to, even then you would do nothing; because perhaps in reality there was nothing for you to change into. - dostoyevsky, fryodor
