THE WITCH KING by Martha Wells is excellent and I had a great time reading it. The worldbuilding is nuanced and well-developed, with factions and history in a way that implies much more going on, but not getting bogged down in little details that don’t matter to this particular story. It deals with colonization and empire from the perspective of a quasi-immortal character (Kai) who has not been around forever, but has been around long enough that things which are part of his culture and history are now details that would fascinate only historians. The narrative shifts between two time periods in his life. This means that some events are mentioned before they were actually shown, but it was generally in a way that made the whole thing easier to follow. The two timelines are connected, as the main characters are trying to figure out whether the plan they were working on when they were betrayed is still salvageable.

The excellent bibliophilic site Shepherd.com asked me (and hundreds of other authors) for the top three books we read in the last year. Yes, just three! You can imagine how hard it was to choose. But - these are the three I picked. Come see why! It should be noted that I loved many other books this past year just as much, but these three formed a nice cohesive group, as they all share similar themes (i.e., queerness + magic) not only with each other but with many of my own novels.

Book Review for A Court of Roses and Thorns by Sarah J. Maas
Tumblr media
A Court of Roses and Thorns is written by Sarah J. Maas. She has also written the Throne of Glass (which I haven’t read yet, but it is on my list), and Cresent City (I started listening to this as an audiobook and like it so far but stop listening because I felt like I would enjoy it more if I was reading the physical copy). This is an adult fantasy novel.
The story follows a girl name Feyre, she goes out into the woods to hunt in order for her family to get food. Out there she kills a wolf, but it turns out that the wolf was actually a Fae. Feyre gets taken to the Fae lands where she must now stay, which she also knows very little about other then the legends she’s heard. She soon learn that the legends were wrong, and begins to enjoy her life there. But there is something going on in the Fae lands, something dark, and Feyre must find a way to stop it, or else everything she knows and loves is doomed.
This book gave me Beauty and the Beast vibes automatically, which as I have said in a previous post, Beauty and the Beast is my favorite fairy tale. But that wasn’t all. I also got some Hades and Persephone, and also I saw a little bit of Cinderella mixed, which I thought added an interesting touch. I really enjoyed this book a lot, but it also made me wonder about how things will go in the next books, especially in the last few chapters. I am currently reading the next book A Court of Mist and Fury, and I’m interested to see what happens.

Book Review: Mort by Terry Pratchett
⭐⭐⭐⭐ The persona we often associate with death is dark and terrifying, but what if he had a sense of humor and was in the market for a new apprentice? In this fourth book of the Discworld series, Pratchett introduces us to Mort, the youngest son of a vintner who is more of a burden to his family than a boon. On his brother’s advice, the vintner decides to take Mort to a hiring fair. What follows…

UNDER THE SMOKESTREWN SKY brings Avery, Zib, and their companions to the Land of Ash and Embers. As fire is the most obviously transformational of the four elements in this series, I appreciate how this book focuses on transformations and the endpoints after major decisions.
As the final book in the quartet, UNDER THE SMOKESTREWN SKY wraps up many dangling narratives, including but not limited to the fate of the missing queen, whether Avery and Zib make it out of the Up-and-Under, and whether any of them reach the Impossible City. There’s a mostly new storyline which didn’t appear in the other three books, as the general goal of finding the missing queen becomes their specific task at hand. To this end they begin searching the Land of Ash and Embers on their way to the Impossible City. There’s a crisis related to Zib which is introduced and resolved in this book. As the story nears its end, Baker's narration is at times concerned as much with the emotional state of the reader as she is with the decisions made by any of the characters. A foundational assumption in Seanan McGuire's writing is that knowing something changes the person who finds it out. This is said quite explicitly in the narration as Baker discussing how you can only read the story for the first time once, after that you'll never view it the same way again.

Rating: 4/5
🐺✨
I started Wolf Gone Wild by Juliette Cross a few days ago and finished it this morning. I was immediately bewitched by the cuteness this paranormal romance book constantly exudes. The fact that it's a series with a standalone for each of the Savoie sisters is even more of an appeal. I look forward to reading the rest of the series. 🧚🏻‍♀️

My February 2023 books read. The best of these: an ARC of #BrokenBayou (a thriller that oozes malice on every page) by #JenniferMoorehead, #AMothToFlame by #JoeClifford (a thriller with a unique ticking clock), #Extinction by #DouglasPreston (a #JurassicPark type thriller), and the #HeroesOfOlympus series (terrific YA reading) by #RickReardon.

"Enjoyable and poetically written."
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
"A thoroughly enjoyable and poetically written story about modern vampires, the characters are interesting with depth and surprises. The story carefully interweaves Vampires with other aspects of the supernatural introducing and explaining them in a way that doesn't break the readers' immersion."
The Fire Within My Heart got its first review in a while and it's a really lovely one. Thank you to the kind soul who read my book and took the time to review it. Reviews are such an appreciated gift as an author!
